Hello, I am looking for a reasonable solution to my Fire Departments problem with GPS. We are currently running 2 Xyboard tablets for our department, one in our ambulance, and once in our Engine. We use them for navigation to calls (With the help of some fire response software) which gives us call information.
However, our building doesn't allow a GPS signal to pass through (Don't think my solution will help with that, but thats okay), and sometimes the GPS in the tablet isn't that strong when coming through the fire apparatus. The solution I have been looking into was an external GPS receiver which could be placed outside of the cab (Mounted on the roof), which transmits via bluetooth to the tablet to give a more reliable GPS lock. Has anybody ever used something like this before? The setup would need to be compatible with all applications, since we use a special application for our fire response software. Thank you for your help!

I hate the build in GPS system. I allways have a lag and very often, it thinks I am in a different street or it thinks I am driving off road.
I am thinking of buying an external bluetooth GPS device, but do not know what is the best available.
I have heard the Qstarz BT-Q818x is one of the best.
Any other advice?

if you can still obtain it: iBT-GPS 747 data logger. With MTK 32 channel chip. I've used it for 2 years now, never let me down, very strong and fast fix. I've used it from the Netherlands until far in Croatia/Spain with my old Touch-phone. Pairs also easy to my Diamond and i use it as a back-up for the built-in GPS which occasionally lets me down (no/bad fix in Vienna recently) or stops working at all after some time (on the road in Germany).

I have just bought a Copilot GlobalSat BT359. I have tested it with Bluetooth GPS Provider V1.2.5 from the market.
I am very please to report this works very well. Got a fix in seconds and is very accurate. Need to test it on a long run.
Can people please post any info on bluetooth GPS's and any results they get.
The Copilot GlobalSat BT359 cost just £14 from eBay.

Try oruxmap from the market. It supports external bluetooth gps. And working great.
I use a Nokia LD-3W bluetooth GPS module. It's nice and small and it works an absolute treat and locks on to satellites instantly. The battery lasts for ever and it also has the in car charger just in case lol. I use the copilot sat nav app as it has built in maps so I don't need to worry about data useage and it is available to buy from the market.

Just tested Copilot GlobalSat BT359 and it works great. Did have some phone crash problems. Fixed it i hope...

Testing with my Nokia phone as the gps device I found making the bluetooth connection was difficult. Once connected it worked great. Hopefully the Nokia was at fault there and not Android and the keyring device will connect every time.

Thats a neat little device and handy it can clip on to your trouser belt or jacket etc. I notice that the website has some mark up on the Copilot UK maps! Its only about £27 from the Market!
Got the BlueNEXT BN-902MM today and took it for a short walk with My Tracks. All seems good. Look forward to running with it on Monday.
Importantly, the routine each time I want to use it is no more than 10 seconds:
* switch on the keyring
on the sgs:
* disable internal gps from the icon on the dropdown menu
* tap the Bluetooth GPS widget
and it's ready to go within a few seconds with no more fuss. Same in reverse to disconnect and go back to using the internal GPS.
I wanted to clarify that as if the connection is more like 30 seconds+ or is unreliable then you don't want to be doing that every day.
Does this work with all aplications, like Google Maps, trapster or Sportypal or only specific apps?

In theory with all apps. The data is passed to the Android OS so any apps using the standard Android interface for reading positional data will get that which comes through the bluetooth link.
The only difference I've seen is in the GPS Status app which gets the positional data but not the debug data with regard to each satellite and its signal level, etc. I don't think any normal apps would need that sort of detail.
Here is my modded armband. It's an iphone band so I'd already butchered it to fit the SGS in and felt I had nothing to lose. First I made a hole to attach the keychain to, then unpicked the thread on part of the velcro strap so the GPS could slot behind that. Then I did a bit of sewing (no homo) to tidy it up.

I'm overall happy with the external Bluetooth GPS.
I've used this app with many other gps apps. Like Google earth, maps, Cell mapper 2, c:geo, DRoute, G-Mon, GeoRecorder, GPS Status,Maps(-), My Tracks, Speedview and more. Only one states that gps is turned off but works anyway which is Waze and iGo won't start because it can't find a GPS-signal.
Accuracy with internal varies between 100m and 10m and external GPS between 10m and 1m.
For navigation in cities I use the external GPS and for rural navigation I use the internal GPS receiver.
Does this prove that the internal gps on the sgs has a hardware issue? Or there other factors involved?
I am just wondering if the issues can really be solved, by software updates?

It doesn't, because the drivers may be buggy, and external receivers do most the processing, so it isn't a timesensitive operation really.

Bluetooth gps navigation works very well on the sgs as you can see on video.
It is a hardware issue in the sense that most standalone gps receivers or external bluetooth gps receivers got more capable gps chipsets (like sirfstar chipsets) than most smartphones nowadays, so it is not an exclusive sgs's problem
It could be an antenna issue as well so a less serious hardeware problem...
Anyway I dont think this thread is the right one for that kind of discussion.
This thread I think is to show if bluetooth gps is working on the sgs and how.
Or why it is an option for some users and for others not...
Bluetooth gps works on my sgs and that's a fact.

Yes, that's interesting how long that battery goes without recharging!! How is that possible?
The specs say 3 days stand-by and 4 hours active...well on stand-by it lasts forever and during navigation is so many hours I dont even know exactly!!!
If its a software issue, I guess 6 months is not even close enough to fix it. Im already convinced that this is a hardware issue since my 5800 seems to have a very accurate GPS

This topic is pasted all over the net and it doesn't seem to be getting much attention, however I think it should be brought to a better light.
The idea is simple: Enable your Android Phone or Tablet to become a bluetooth reciever(to replace a headset or bluetooth speakers) and broadcast audio to the device and broadcast microphone from the device.
This could be used in several different applications:
1. Using an Android Tablet as a Car Stereo Interface
(Connect Phone to Tablet Via Bluetooth and use it as a hands free speakerphone, or aux out to your stereo)
2. Multiple Android Phones
(Have a business and personal phone? Answer all your calls from one.)
3. Phone or Tablet as Bluetooth Speaker/Mic
(Skype, PS3, Xbox 360, TV, Google Voice)
I would use several of these options on a daily basis, and would most definitely pay good money for an app like this.
So my questions are:
1. Is this possible?
2. If it is, how hard would it be?
3. If it isn't that hard, why hasn't someone done it yet!?

Just wanted to bump this because we need to put our heads together here and get this done. I need this capability for number 1 on your list of potential uses. I also would pay good money for an app that enabled this. Phones and tablet are rooted and ready to modify whatever is needed. Ii've bumped a couple other threads today as well.

I have been looking for this for a while. I use an old LG Eve in my car and my Captivate's Wifi connection for GPS but I would love to have it work for calls and music too.

just wanted to leave an incentive kind of post to say that I've also been looking for exactly the same thing.
My hunting on Google play just stopped after finding this post on XDA.
It's a kind of confirmation that there isn't a solution yet.
Since our rooted androids are more than capable of acting as a Bluetooth receiver, whether they may be based on new or older hardware, this seams like a very logical step in their lifecycle instead of getting forgotten in a drawer full of old and unused electronic waste.
Some doubts:
is a2dp required for this?
Is a2dp hardware related or simply a software feature?
Personally, I could live with a simple one way communication from a phone with mobile network (sender ) to the receiver. The used mic could still be the one on the sender side.
Wouldn't even need to have the receiver in a visible place as I would just connect a stereo cable from its headset output to an aux input on a hifi or a car stereo to hear music or acting as a hands-free system.
Hope this gets some real attention.

I can't beleive there is STILL no progress on this. Maybe I'll try asking a dev that has made similar apps the feasibility of this. There are so many practical uses for this that I cannot beleive no one has capitalized on it.
This would be a killer app if done right. Who here doesn't have an old phone laying around gathering dust? This could start off small; simply enabling the phone/tablet to be essentially a Bluetooth speaker, but then gain features and an interface using A2DP, which would evolve it into a killer way to make any car (with at least a tape deck) able to have full Bluetooth integration and control. I really hope someone can do this!

May be this is not the right way to do.
I know this is a crazy old subject but others have commented so I don't feel so bad.
I want to make my own android system for my car. I have everything I need for it (hardware/software-wise) except for this one thing.
A few years back there used to be an app called Tablet Talk, it's not exactly what we want but I'm still willing to settle for something like that. The way it works is phone->tablet->handsfree Bluetooth speaker. You could make and receive calls (including seeing the contact names/phone numbers on the tablet) from the tablet itself, then the audio/microphone goes to the handsfree device. Another added feature was when a call is happening the app stops all audio coming from the tablet until the call is done.
Like I said before, it's not perfect but at this point, I don't ever see it happening any other way. I found the app a few days ago, it doesn't exist on the app store anymore, unfortunately, I could get it to run. It just kept crashing.
If anyone knows of something then please let us know.
Years later, found just this thread: I want to do similar thing: Use a private phone (for my sake rooted with custom fw) as a hands-free bt device with an unrooted business phone (non-rooted and secure managed with company tool). I also don't want call forwarding or similar. Just do and answer calls, use phone book and call list via bluetooth like my car radio do for years.
Is there still no solution?
Does anyone else have a problem that if they use bluetooth audio connections with a satnav app that the start of each direction is clipped off. For example it will come in with "...nd exit" when the instruction is probably "At the roundabout, take the second exit". I keep getting instructions like "Yards" and "Exit" which are not very helpful. It's not a solution to leave it unconnected to the bluetooth because I'm partially deaf, I cannot hear it at all unless I blast it through the stereo. Every other bt connection is just fine, but the satnav always does this.
So far seems to be a problem with all of them, though HTC Locations I'm not sure what it does any more as I was trying some fixes and the license ran out, they refused to give me an extension to the trial period and I'm not paying for it until I know for sure it works. Google's Navigation does it for sure. It makes no difference if I use the stock voices or Ivona voice.
Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone have a fix? It's even helpful to hear that anyone else definitely doesn't have this problem so I know if it's a common thing or something unusual.
In case it helps, the car is a Citroen Grand C4 Picasso with the standard audio package that comes with the VTR+ UK model.

I hope getting some help & ideas for a new idea I'm trying to use in my car.
I have an old Volvo, with next to no modern entertainment options, meaning a factory built-in radio (neither DIN nor Double-DIN), with no bluetooth or anything fancy. A good radio with a really good sound and equalizer (DolbySorround), but that's it. And a seperate navigation system with no online connectivity or recent updates what so ever (last update is from 2014 for a nice 300.-€).
My idea would be:
Tablet (in my case a Fire HD8, unlocked, rooted and with LineageOS 14)
Phone (Xiaomi Mi Mix2, as well with LineageOS, but LOS16)
Bluetooth receiver from Aukey (that I can wire in with the equalizer)
So far, so good. But here comes the problem:
I want to do some things on the tablet, like navigation, music streaming and calls. Is it possible, to connect phone and tablet in a way, I could start the music (Amazon, Google and my own Nextcloud) from the tablet, where in reality the phone makes the connection and "sends" the sound to the tablet (and from there the tablet to the BT audio receiver) or directly to the BT audio receiver, as long as I can control that from the tablet. Or the navigation (tablet) can use the internet connection from the phone. And last thing, I want to make or receive calls on the phone, but I would like to control that from the tablet as well.
I think you get the idea, what I'm trying to do here.
I'm really not sure how to start, the hardware is already here, but I'm willing to buy other stuff, as long as it works afterwards.
Any ideas or input is very welcome, I'm a little stuck here. Thanks a lot in advance!
