[Q] Back to stock recovery for OTA update. - HTC One S

Hello my dearest XDA friends,
I've got a problem preparing my phone for an OTA update to 4.0.4, then to 4.1(.1?).
My situation is like this:
- My phone is rooted (SuperSU)
- It has what I believe to be TWRP Recovery on it
- I tried to flash stock recovery on it.
But now when I use OTA Rootkeeper and start the update, it gives the red triangle exclamation mark error.. I've tried to flash it using the All-in-One Kit, and also by booting into the bootloader and using "fastboot flash recovery.img", it then says the flash is successful but when I try to boot into Recovery mode it gives the same error..
I'm out of ideas, what to do? I'd rather not lose any files.. thanks!

Oh - I have the S4 version btw

Bump - Sorry for triple post just really want to know.

You need to lock your bootloader

It is fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and NOT fastboot flash recovery.img

But am I even able to flash a recovery to it then? I can flash TWRP or CWM to it just fine, and I can boot in it after I flashed it, just not with the stock Recovery..

I know, I got that wrong the first time

Don't lock your boot loader. No need to do that.

Download the update through hitting software update.
Then flash stock recovery. Boot up phone. Hit install update. After finished, boot to bootloader, flash twrp.

I've tried this, but when I start the update I get the red triangle error again.. I tried it by locking the bootloader, didn't work, then unlocked it again, so obviously everything was wiped, I've installed ParanoidAndroid now, if I don't like it I'll just install a custom ROM with Sense+.
Thanks for the help guys!

Yes you got red triangle because you need stock recovery to install official updates.

Yes, but when I flash stock recovery, then boot into recovery I get the green circle-arrow update thingy, then the red triangle, why is that?

You'll need to boot into android, with the stock bootloader installed, and the update will boot bootloader and install.
You'll get a prompt telling you what to do.

So, re-lock bootloader, flash stock recovery, update OTA?

Don't do relock. Boot up your phone. Go to setting---> about phone sw update. Hit update now and wait.

Man.. I'm having the same issue. Was rooted with TWRP, flashed ZenRom fine (with intentions of getting the OTA to JB), booted fine. Then had to switch computers cuz windows 8 sucks. Flashed stock recovery img, successful, now device won't boot past the green circle, then red triangle.
Any suggestions? I supposed I'll try flashing another recovery and see what progress I can make there.

I posted this instruction like 3 times in the xda forum in one week...
if you follow this step by step correctly there should be NO ! issues by reverting to stock JB
take a look here, or take two looks or more or whatever
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37942416&postcount=2
why using rootkeeper? follow this instructions and root again.
I used this method 3 times on windows 8 with latest HTC drivers, original HTC data cable, and TWRP 2.4.1.0.
no issues

[Q] Bricked HTC One S

It started off with me rooting my phone and unlocking to bootloader to install a rom. The rom got stuck in a loop at the htc logo so i tried using the recovery in cwm to bring it back to the stock, only my sd card wasnt being found. Ive been reading random things and different parts from different situations and im not sure what ive done tbh.
So the current situation is i cant access cwm i get some weird symbol with a phone and some red symbol across it. I can access fastboot though. Ive tried the ruu thing but i get an error of it not being able to update, from what i believe its because the rom is a higher version than the ruu and ive been unable to find a higher version. The version i have is for 1.84.531.2 and what is on my phone is 1.84.6 something. Not sure where to go from here, any help is appreciated
Edit: Ive also tried flashing the stock boot.img using fastboot flash but i get a signature error or something.

Hye. I installed maximushd rom few weeks ago. Now i wanted to install carbon rom but each time i flash it from recovery it fails.

Sure just flash the old firmware
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322755
bootloader clear storage
fastboot flash your new custom recovery
Then load whatever rom you want and install it.

or another way, I did, just to see if I could go back if I wanted to
flashed stock recovery
factory reset from bootloader... waited for it to do it's thing.... when it rebooted to phone I held down the power button to reset it.. held down volume down to get back into bootloader.
made sure it was in fastboot usb mode
ran RUU
But that was kind of overkill.

Sure, it's not going to get rid of Soff or anything.
That only happens when you use the ****** (fastboot command that will not be named, because someone will use it and have a paperweight)

Thx for your advices !
By doing the 1st or the 2nd method, then I'll have to re-unlock via HTC Dev ?
I ask that because I want to restore with RUU and I see everywhere that I have to relock the bootloader before doing this.

You don't have to relock bootloader to run RUU on s-off device.
Just reboot to fastboot, make sure your pc can see your phone and execute ruu*.exe

Yes, that is the important bit, clear storage in bootloader when you have the STOCK recovery.
The stock recovery fixes the issues. (from what I have read on our forums)

Actually I soft-bricked my phone yesterday, and since I was brand-new I didn't backup anything. And after a hellish ride unbricking my phone I got it to work, but I went back an update. Before I was at 4.1.2 and it went back to 4.0.4

You never unlocked your bootloader.
Well I'm not entirely sure where you went wrong there, did you Odin back to 4.0.4 or was that just an old backup?
That unauthorized software has been detected happened to me before when I took an ota unknowingly and didn't realize it locked my bootloader.
Going back to 4.0.4 was my fault, when looking for a solution to unbrick my phone I found a webpage that explained how and gave me files to download. And the file for the default rom was 4.0.4. I will try again after unlocking my bootloader again.
What did you use to get back to 4.0.4?
I unlocked my bootloader, went to cwm and tried to install a custom rom and got "E:Error in /sdcard/cm- 11 -20131211 - NIGHTLY -d2vzw.zip. (Status 7) Installation aborted".
Is that what it's showing now?

Yes, at first I forgot to wipe data/cache but even after I did that the same thing still comes up. Halp. Should I use Rom Manager? That's the progrom I used originally when I would get the System Software error, and now I get this error when going into CWM manually.

Older recoveries don't work with kit Kat (4.4) roms.

Where could I find a newer version? Sorry I'm scrub-cakes.

Just remove asserts from updater script. You probably tried flashing cm11 and the rom doesnt work.

You cant? try not booting from recovery just power down and then reboot. ive found that to work with s-off and unlocked. ive heard of many talking about this problem.lol i aint had it?
Sorry, I didn't explain properly.....
The issue is that I can't boot my ROM with s-off and an unlocked bootloader - just boot loops, it's a known issue.
I'd have to unlock the bootloader to flash your recovery, but then my ROM won't boot. As your recovery doesn't have a terminal emulator built in like TWRP has, I have no way of relocking the bootloader (I would execute ./revone -l ) so ROM can't boot.....

Your boot.img is most likely fine, you just need to restore your system partition. Did you make a backup of your device using your custom recovery? If so, then you need to restore using that backup. Otherwise, I can provide a link to either my TWRP backup (not CWM compatible), an RUU, or my deodexed Rom. Your choice. First, if you already have a backup made up, then apply it. Otherwise, let me know.

I had TWRP on before CWM but even when i would load that it would still bootloop thats why i used CWM. Just one question if i want to root it again without a system control app this time will i be able to use this exe file to restore it if it happens again. it took me a year before i tried it because the first time there was no roms and i bootlooped that HTC one SV and had to fork over $300.00 bucks for a new one but i figured that i would root it because of busybox.

Its an ruu, an ruu is about as legit as you are going to get when it comes to restoring your phone. So yes, it will work . If your phone bootlooped when you flashed twrp in the past then my guess is that you either used the wrong fastboot commands and wrote it to another partition by accident, or you used a TWRP that was not presumably built for your phone and thus used another TWRP designed for another device.

If you are about to do something to your phone, make sure you know exactly what you are doing, why you are doing it, how it works, why it works, should I make a mistake what are my escape routes, and if all else fails - plan B. If none of these are set to mind then I recommend you do absolutely nothing to your phone until you actually understand its method.

In lamen terms, if you cannot stand in front of a class and teach them the concept behind the madness then you yourself probably shouldn't be dancing on thin ice either because you may sink and drown
Dont hesitate to ask a question on here before proceeding further if there is something you do not fully understand.

Thank you for everything. This is forth phone I've rooted a phone. First three where easy : evo 4g, galaxy 3s, galaxy prevail. But this was tricky not as many rims out there for it. Again thank you. Now that I fixed it I'm going root it again just no system tweaking apps for me
Hi, So i just bought this device and I've looked all over the internet to root my htc one sv on BOOST mobile. I unlocked the bootloader but then must have been following the wrong guide and flashed a wrong recovery or something. I can boot just not into recovery, it gets stuck "entering recovery". Does anyone know a recent and more updated way to root this device?! Thank you so much in advance!
