one x wont accept updates. - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I went to update my htc one x, and it says server unavailable and im on 4.0.3. Im stuck...

You are almost certainly better off by not doing any OTA updates from at&t.

If OP has any desire to root and flash custom ROMs, I agree. Just root and unlock bootloader now. Then update to whatever stock rooted or custom ROM you like.
If OP wants to stay stock, then get the RUU from the HTC website. RUU will wipe the phone, but its a cleaner install than OTA, and less likely to cause problems anyway.

I had the same problem. Download the rom from HTC .com connect to pc and install rom.

I postponed it 8 hours, now it's forcing the update in 8 hours, will I lose my root and will my bootloader be locked?

That's the only thing that worries me about not using a ROM. I just rooted and de-bloated stock 1.85. One day it'll come, and it'll either unroot and lock me or it'll fail and I'll have to flash the next RUU and do it all over.
Wait so your on 1.85, and its still giving you the ota?
Wait there has to be an app that manages ota, try freezing update manager or similar things to try and stop it.
Just throwing ideas I'm on CleanROM Lite so not much help.

ota root keeper
I came across this app: OTA Root Keeper by Project Voodoo, which backs up your .su
I'm on CleanRom 5.5 so no use for me...
My recomendation:
1) Root Now and protect with RootKeeper
or..
2) Delete the OTA zip file in /sdcard/download (not sure if this will work)

Well I got up today proud of myself for having made the decision to go ahead and root my AT&T HOX.
I have a 32 gig 10 inch Toshiba Thrive that is rooted running ICS. Then I discover there are several HOX models....and several firmwares. With sweaty palms I swiped one finger down and shaking almost too much to hit ABOUT scrolled on to the bitter truth of 2.20.502.7...
This phone cannot be rooted.
Now I must try to gather myself and use the technique I am lacking the most in.... Patience.
So Fredfly, I'm sure someone here can tell you better than I but as far as I can judge if your bro's firmware is like or higher than mine just take a number and have a seat.
JP
I'm in the same boat Jonathan... just got mine this week and it's 2.2. Does anyone know if there is anyone working on rooting 2.2?

People are working on it but that doesn't mean it will ever be cracked. We can only hope.

What version of the HOX do you have? The AT&T version? If the firmware is below 2.20, then you have a plethora of methods you can use if you simply look in the dev section. If you're so inclined, you can use the guide that I wrote for the Telus version in my signature. The attached software should work for the AT&T as well as the Telus and Rogers versions as well.
If you got your one X from Rogers then you're fine. First go to htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader. Then flash TWRP recovery (evita version) . Then put the zip file for a custom rom into the sdcard, boot into TWRP recovery, and install it. Then do a factory reset from TWRP and reboot. As a first rom to try, I recommend CleanROM or VIPER XL.
Hey guys thanks for the advice. I looked at HTC dev and its exactly the same as the one s. I checked my brother's firmware this weekend and its 1.8... I will attempt to root and unlock this weekend. Also thanks for the Rom recommendations. I will probably put viper on his phone as I am familiar with the venom team and know they do great work.

Its not firmware 2.20 and above. Its only firmware 2.20 that is unrootable (at this time). Its all about AT&T. Every other carrier is allowing the bootloader to be unlocked via HTCDev.com.
There have been a few version numbers higher than 2.20 (2.23, 2.29, 2.33). AFAIK, they can all be bootloader unlocked.

[Q] Root on One XL?

Hello,
I am running One XL 4.0.3, the NON-ROGERS/AT&T VERSION, its the Asia version, i just received that i can upgrade to 4.0.4, but idk that if i can still get rooted if i upgraded to 4.0.4(or later on 4.1).
P.S.: I don't want to go for the official Bootloader Unlock.
Thanks.
Depends what version of 4.0.3 you're running...
Go to Settings, About, Software Info, More, Build number.

i would just do htcdev unlock, i assume u know what you are doing and i assume htc will honor anything that isnt from an idiot flashing the wrong thing. so just do an htcdev unlock.
I don't want to lose my warranty... (in case of any screen damage, etc)
I have ROOTED, running of 4.0.3, but i know that i will lose my root when i upgrade to 4.0.4, and i am wondering if i still can root my phone on 4.0.4(without htcdev.com)
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Yes there is a way although we need to know your exact software version (1.73,1.85,1.93). If you have the right version somewhere in the development section there is a method.

Ok
I have been rooted on 1.77.708.3
Now, I've updated to 1.89.708.9, I lost my root permission, what should I do?
I am running Android 4.0.3, 16GB version of HTC One XL.

Any one have solutions?

Flash the boot.IMG first through fast boot then flash the ROM.
Also rooting will void your warranty. Once the phone is unlocked it will be "tampered"

Is downgrade of touchscreen required for not updated phone through OTA

I'm looking to install AOSP rom (ATT HTC One X, unlocked using with T-MO)
I'm following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38304611&postcount=1
The thread says its required for people who received OTA update, I wanted to know is it still required if I didn't get OTA update? (still using ICS)
Thanks

The update was for HOX in Asia, not HOXL. If you haven't gotten any update prompt, that means there is no update. What's the confusing part?
I agree with timmaaa...it makes no sense staying on the stock ROM. if you're not doing it because of warranty, the HOXL has been out since June 2012 which means they won't help you hardware-wise
Sent from my HTC One XL using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There have been updates released for the HOXL for HTC in Asia, they were among the first to be released, refer to the RUU & OTA thread. Even though the phone has been out since May 2012, if the user has recently bought the phone he's still under warranty.

Unfortunately, that doesn't really mean anything. Folks have had issues checking for updates, when an update is known to exist. And no RUUs exist yet for Android 4.2.2/Sense 5, so you cannot update manually by RUU (which would be the sure solution). Some folks have had success with doing a factory reset (somehow makes the update come through) but its not guaranteed by any means. Or you can try to download the flash the OTA manually with stock recovery (not personally knowledgeable about the process).

This forum is not even really for your variant of the HTC one xl, xda does not have a forum for your device.
