Do y'all think they will eventually make a Nexus S for 850 and 1900 3G bands like they did for the Nexus One?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Hard to say... it'd make sense if they want to market it to UK and Canadian users, since more of their carriers use the bands AT&T does for 3G. Even if they do, it's not gonna make me jump from my N1. I'm perfectly happy with it, and I personally don't care for the Nexus S.

Regarding UK carriers - wrong. The Nexus S already has UMTS 2100 which is used UK-wide, and UMTS 900 which is about to gain greater adoption in the UK. No carrier in Europe uses AT&T's bands.
But regarding Canadian carriers, yes, it'd make sense to produce a UMTS 850/1900 version. That doesn't mean it's incredibly likely to happen.
Well I hope it does! Everyone is really downing the phone and theyve never even held it! Google put their name on it so I bet its way better than people are making it out to be

I hope so too
I will surely jump from my Nexus One
I love it, but a change of looks would be nice
Here's to hoping there's a software hack like the one they had for the Vibrant's 850 MHz band.
While I have no first hand knowledge what so ever, if Google/handset manufacturer work on the same time line as the N1, after a period of time they will release a North American 3G variant of the Nexus S.
Quite frankly, I wonder why TMo seems to always get the Google Experience Phone, do most developers use TMo?
While I have no issues with TMo other than that they are not real big in my area of the USA, I cannot help but wonder why not either put a pentaband chip-set in the phone (which supports all Frequencies) or offer two variants right off the bat.
It just seems weird to me is all, I realize that El Goog probably has a good reason, but if sales are a key driving force why not offer it to more potential users and not just to users on the USA smallest network.

Because they don't care? Google and Samsung are both corporations that serve to make their shareholders $$$, not keep us happy. Seriously. How many 850 MHz Nexus Ones did Google sell? Four? It's a ****ing shame because that phone @ at&t when it came out was really only up against the iPhone 3GS - it had no retail presence, and failed. Someone in some marketing office is confusing causation & correlation - their unsubsidized, unmarketable phone didn't sell.
They messed up again, the phone is still only being sold unsubsidized. Nobody buys unsubsidized phones in America (statistically speaking).
EDIT: I have an 850 MHz Nexus One - release day. I haven't seen a single phone on the market to make me even consider switching out. Consequence of dropping unsubsidized cash on a phone I guess.

That was a false positive. The TMobile Vibrant has 1900 3g but it's never had 850.

The Nexus S is being sold @ a subsidized price: $199 w/ contract
Google and Samsung do serve to make money for shareholders, but Google does so primarily by making people happy, that is why their services are mostly free. Happy customers are Google's commodity.
About the AT&T 3G bands: I got an "i don't know" from a Google Software developer this morning on Twitter, so doubtful it will be around the Tmobile launch, but I don't think there is any question with the phone being sold in Best Buy and the way Samsung handled the Galaxy, it won't be too long
If there was a 850MHz version, I would put my order in tonight as I'm itching for a 4" phone (perfect size IMO). I have a feeling there probably wont be one though, as the Nexus S is more about having an up to date, clean-slate phone for developers to use and for Google to showcase new Android features. I doubt they care about maximizing sales of them, and there's probably not a lot to gain by opening them up to AT&T/Rogers/Bell/Telus customers, especially after all the testing and certification requirements.
Canadians that really want one can go with Wind Mobile or Mobilicity... and if I lived in the US I would pick T-Mobile over AT&T any day.

While this has been addressed in part already, I'd like to address the other half of the story.
The Nexus S has already gone through the FCC. Check the FCC filings, and you'll find the frequencies on which the phone can operate. Go back and check the Vibrant initially passing through the FCC. See the difference?
The S does not have the hardware required for 3G to operate on AT&T. No software hack will enable what the hardware just CAN NOT do.

That's easy for you to say. I'd jump on Tmobile in a heartbeat but they have no, and I mean none, service at my work. Since I spend the majority of my time there it rules out Tmobile for me. So lets hope an ATT compatible version comes out in a few months.
Yeah I would happily drop 500+ dollars on a at&t nexus s if they make one for 850 and 1900 3G bands

yeah i dont understand it either. it seems as though these manufacturers actually HURT their sales by not being forthcoming right off the bat. we all dance around the issue, not knowing to buy or not buy, will an 850 version come later for me, etc. nobody is gonna drop 500 with that type of info. just lay it all out there from the beginning so people know to buy or not!

I have two thoughts on this. First, TMo doesn't give a crap. Look at the approach that most providers take to their phones, as far as bloatware, locking it down, crippling, etc. TMo, IMO, does far less of that than any other carrier. Imagine Google asking a carrier to offer a subsidized price on a Google Experience device, that they can't put any bloatware on. AT&T would laugh. For months. I think the prime reason is that TMo is willing to do that, while the others simply are not.
Two, doesn't TMo have a cell tower in Google's parking lot? I read that somewhere, but can't find anything on it. Maybe someone here has some info on that??

Again, Dan, I feel it's because TMo is the only carrier to offer a subsidy on it. Sammy can make a phone that works on any or all frequencies, if they want to. But they'd have to find someone willing to sell it, without any carrier subsidy, and more importantly, they'd have to have customers willing to buy it unsubsidized. On this latter point, I believe that is why Google felt the N1 was a massive failure. They didn't sell anywhere near what they wanted to, and they couldn't get AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon to offer a subsidy. I'm not sure what happened with the CDMA folks, but I can only venture a guess as to AT&T...

I was guessing the same thing. Either there is RIDICULOUSLY good T-Mo reception at the Mountain View campus OR it has to be some sort of deal between T-Mo and Google.
I remember when the G1 came out. I was thinking "wow, what an ugly phone. Android seems like a cool concept but seeing how it works on that phone is crappy. boo hiss etc". The phone did not seem to have much promise compared to the other competitors (windows mobile and....iphone). Naturally T-Mo took a huge risk carrying and promoting the at the time unknown phone. It seems like that faith has paid off because Google has chose T-Mobile as the only official carrier of ALL of their developer phones (ADP1 (G1), ADP2 (MT3G), Nexus One, and now the Nexus S.)
Or maybe it's some combination of both of those theories.
Although I enjoyed the data speed of T-Mobile, I am glad I am no longer paying a charge to them. This business with their future phones is a sign of how un-serious they take their consumer business. And because of that, they do deserve the lack of business their decisions will cause.
Not producing phones that will fully function of AT&T's 3G/4G service is just pure willy-nilly ignorant and T-Mobile needs to feel the heat of their ignorance. The so-called "super phone" coming to T-Mobile, the HTC Sensation, will be a no-seller because of how T-Mobile chooses to conduct their business.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/27/t-mobile-g2x-lacks-quadband-hspa-shatters-dreams/
Interesting. i wonder what they do when and if the merger goes through, what then ? do they run to platforms and try to merge over 2 years ? That will totally toast them in business and will lower market share........... Yeah..... What is their plan ?
Yea, I'm thinking of switching back to AT&T as well. Will get a phone that works as long as I need it to, and much better network coverage. Data speeds aren't that big a deal to me, as long as it's around 2mbps download 1mbps up I'm more than content...
And I can still get a 4GB data plan with an iPhone if I go back...
Not too concerned here. 2 of my 3 t-mobile devices fully support at&t's 3g and 4g bands. Just my hd2 will need to be replaced, and that's years away. Not worried.
edit: And phones are planned many months if not a year (or more) in advance. The at&t - t-mobile merger most likely wasn't even in the outlook when they made that phone in the first place.

Well, that's assuming that the merger goes through.
And even if it does, it's not T-Mobile themselves who produce the phones, they can only buy what the manufacturers are selling.

Why would you invest extra money into adding a whole new radio into a handset if there is no garuntee that the merger will go through? The next complaint/answer would be "tmo's handsets are sooo needlesly expensive". Probably because someone thought it was a good idea to put unecassary hardware in a phone you probably wont even remember when (if?) the merger goes through.
I get calls like this all the time, if the service doesnt work for you i completely understand- Please find another service because getting the same whiney call day in and day out costs t mobile that much more money keeping an unhappy customer.
Let me be clear id rather handle 10000 calls about our coverage and service then silly reasons like this, you dont need to justify your reason to leave a carrier.. just leave.

To be honest, that came off a little strong, but I still feel it was justified. The Original post should be re-read, then see what was more flame-bait. My statement was the truth, it was "ignorant". Ignorance isn't an insult, its simply stating the the post has no merit into what T-Mobile is doing with their products.
T-Mobile still remains a competitor to AT&T, why would they start to have manufacturers incorporate further frequencies in their devices that support the competitors products? I don't see AT&T doing that with their products, nor Verizon or Sprint.
Interesting. And maybe of interest to me. Someone from t mobile has been hard on my heels to switch from sprint to t mobile. She countered every advantage i thought sprint had: pricewise, 4g coverage etc. If I did not switch yet, cause I am a creature of habits and stick to sprint cause: it is what I started with.

Actually Sprint and Verizon both work on the same 2 frequencies. We're allowed to roam on Verizon as much as we want, included in the plan (there's no hard limit, but don't overuse it), and Verizon customers get to roam on Sprint.
AT&T will become the only GSM phone provider in california when this takes place.
Not surprise one bit. T-MobileUS is notorious for false advertising or even intended false advertising on a bunch of their handsets. How can you trust a company who intentionally commercialized the whole "4G" craze by simply stating that actual 4G infrastructure wasn't worth it and HSPA+ was more than just enough? Good thing they got bought out.

As of right now, not possible for 3g data. The phone doesn't have the baseband but there is a group that thinks the phone actually supports Att 3G but is locked down until the merger goes through. Would make sense that Tmo would keep it locked in order to maintain customers as long as possible.

I am totally hoping that ATT comes in, forces a massive switch to their network, and then allows everyone to update their phones inside of the current contracts.
I would get the G2x, keep it as a wifi machine or sell it on Ebay, and be able to get the Galaxy SII for the low contract price.
I want ATT to take over the towers, and give all the old users new hardware to work within the ATT system. And the T-Mobile data costs locked in. Great deal for everyone.
One thing for sure, if ATT comes in, they have to give the same 4G (3.5G++ or whatever you want to call T-Mobile 4G) service to all the G2x owners...one way or the other.
Heck if ATT is not able to finish the purchase they need to pay up 6 billion in penalties. A bunch of new phones to existing user, going out a new contract prices, is easy. Plus ATT has way more solid coverage in my area.
I went with the G2x hoping that it would become an orphaned phone in the ATT world....gets me a new piece of hardware on the cheep
I agree with this. If AT&T forces people into having crippled phones without offering heavily subsidized replacements on their new network then surely there will be an outcry ... with that said we could be getting a great upgrade deal for getting the shaft (but this would be nearly 2 years down the road so its sort of win win)

Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Several upcoming phones for Tmobile support AT&T 3G bands and it is quoted in several sources that "the bandband for AT&T will be locked until the merger goes through".
AT&T is putting up a pretty big wager guaranteeing it would go through. I don't see why it wouldn't. Sure AT&T would be the only major GSM carrier in the US but there is still plenty of competition (Verizon). Plus larger cities have their own local cell carriers.
They probably would also be subject to leasing out their frequencies to companies like Cricket and Boost Mobile, that piggy back off other carriers towers.
I personally think it is a good idea because there is only so much frequency bandwidth for GSM and having to split it up among different groups creates problems. Not all area's have all the frequencies but once the merger goes through, phones would support all and would be able to connect to anything. This means more signal and bandwidth for everyone.
Sure I dislike AT&T but I did like their service (back before the iFone). It then became over crowded and I couldn't use it at my house. For travel, AT&T > Tmobile. At home, where I am most of the time, Tmobile>AT&T. If they combine, it will be the best of both worlds.
So I know there is a pool of people like me that recently purchased a Charge in order to get locked into an unlimited data plan. I assume there is also a smaller set of people, like me, who did this despite the fact they would have rather waited and purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2, but were forced into this decision because of the now enacted tiered data plans. With that being said and the recent news of the GS2 being released next month, I want to know if there is a way to switch from the Charge to the GS2, preferably without paying full retail for the phone (or adding a line). Any insight from current or former Big V employees or aggressive customers on how to go about this, if at all?

I'm guessing he's basing that off of how thin it is.
I wonder if that new Verizon Samsung slider that's been wandering the interwebs lately is Verizon's SGS II...
I'm basing it off of not a single mention of LTE in the many many reviews online. We have leaked specs on the entire phone pretty much but not one place mentions LTE.
I haven't reviewed the specs of the gs2. Is it a dual core phone? Have you noticed all 4g lte phones are single core? What I was told by verizon is the lte connection somehow literally fries the current dual core processors thus resulting all the lte phones being single core and also why the droid bionic hasn't been released. To conclude my yapping is if the gs2 is a dual core phone then it's likely to be just for 3G.
Gremlins are watching you...
I bought my charge at costco hoping to either get a bionic or gs2 but I'm very happy with my charge even umrooted... I haven't had the need for a dual core cpu and when I do I want a snap dragon dual core. I

I am a new customer coming over from Sprint. I was not satisfied with their service but stuck with them because they were more affordable and had unlimited everything. Preferred LTE over Wimax and made the switch a few days before the new tiered data plans. I could have gotten a reliable 3g phone for much cheaper, but I could not resist the LTE.

again, these 3g only guesses arent based on anything...lets wait and see
frankly though if it launches before oct the odds of 3g are greater...if its october+ i could see them marketing it as a big release

Why not? SeaRay was already leaked so it should at least get a press release.

I'm on Verizon, we'll be the last to hear of CDMA based devices...

I seriously hate this. I have sprint and I am fed up with Android. And there is one wp7 available for sprint. Everyone says Mango, but where is the damn fruit already?
I don't want a small screen with a keyboard. If sprint doesn't get a better phone before/slightly after Christmas, I'm probably going to pick up the GSII.
The GSM carriers are loaded with various WP7 phones. Where is the love with CDMA?

Trust me, I feel your pain, there is only one device with Verizon...and I waited for ever for the base WP7 device.
The problem is that GSM covers about 85-90% of the world, not just the US.
When a company makes a phone for the global market, it will make the GSM models first because that is where the money is. After the profits start slowing down from the GSM models, then will go towards a CDMA market because there will be more profits to make.
Unless your carrier (Sprint in your case or Verizon in my case) wants a big OEM (HTC, Nokia, etc) to create them a custom phone for their network (and WP7 is not big enough for Sprint or vzw yet), you have to wait till the offer models and that does not show up for a year later.
Look at all the old flip phones, Moto for example, the razor, GSM had it over a year before CDMA carriers did, same deal.
So, if you want new phones on their release, you need to be with a GSM carrier or just wait, like most CDMA users have to....
I'm dreaming of a LTE (Verizon 4G) based WP7 device with a 4" SuperLCD/Super AMOLED display, a QWERTY keyboard, front camera with a good 10-12mp rear camera, dual core CPU and better GPU (for newer games), very slim design and a 2-3 day(real world) battery without making the phone huge. Who ever makes it, I'll buy it...
but, I guess one could dream......
That's y I left Sprint because of the lack of cdma love. Never will make that mistake again. T mobile service sucks in my area wish I had my DVP on Sprint Sero. But I hope Nokia shows us something today.

What else would they show, they've made it clear that it's WP7 or burst, they better have one.
When are they debuting it. I've been looking on pocketnow and haven't seen anything

Yeah, wish I could leave Sprint, but $40 a month for unlimited data, text, mobile to mobile, nights and weekends, free roaming, 500 anytime. . . well you get the idea. As much as it pains me to not have as many hardware options, I don't feel as much pain when it comes to bill time.

I know this sucks lol. Do you think they will go towards CDMA this quarter or no? The phones are in high demand from what I've seen. People are just waiting.
I don't know, I might just go out and buy the arrive. Its just like the android shift, but with a tilting display and running WP7. I don't mind the 3.5" display, but coming from an EVO screen size, do you think that is too small or no?

No, unless Verizon/Sprint request(aka: Pay big $$$) for a custom phone, no, they wont rush out a model (Note: Carrier or MS, MS could request that CDMA phones are released on the same time).
Think about it, Sprint and Verizon are US companies only and on a global scale, CDMA accounts for around 10% but, I believe it's less. So Verizon and Sprint both combined would be about 4-6% of the worlds sold phones, if that. Even if everyone in Verizon and Sprint was requesting phones, would you as a company put all your effort to companies that account for less than 10% of your market ? I don't think so...

The 4.3" display ? Yea, it is a quite smaller and it might be too small for some people but, in the 3.5-3.8" is a good size for a phone that fits in your pocket.
Want my advice ? If you want WP7, pick up an Arrive off contract. You should be able to get one for under $300 (seen some used go on ebay for under $200 but, for the most part under $300, Just make sure you get one with a clean ESN). So if some new awsome model comes out for Sprint, you don't use up your 2 year contract and still can get a new phone.
That's what I did with my Trophy, still have a $100 credit towards a new phone and I'll hold it till there is a phone that I really want.
My Trophy is a nice phone and it will hold me out till then.....

Same sero plan I was on. Didn't help that my tp2 was almost non functional either. But I sure do miss my sero plan. Sprint service is better in my area than Tmobile. And I sure wasn't going to wait for that Tp3. I was not at all impressed with It so i just went and got the dvp with no contract.

Yeah that is a really good idea... CDMA phones are always last for everything. If I can pick one up for 200 or less, I'll just do that then. But hopefully one comes out by then.
If not, I guess I'll buy the GSII. Unless I can buy an unlocked trophy and use it on sprint? Is that possible? I don't really like physical keyboards.
The Arrive is a great phone - you will be happy with it, and the screen is big enough, especially since you have a nice keyboard.
But I imagine you are like me, and want a nice candybar form-factor, like the GSII. Hopefully Sprint will get one this holiday season, but until then, the Arrive is a very nice phone.

Yeah I am going to wait. I for sure do not want any other Android other than the GSII. I personally wish the hardware was up to date with WP7, but what can you do. At least it has a nice HD display.
Probably will check it out again tomorrow. I'm ready for a phone to actually "work" without a hassel of "oh **** I forgot the flash that fix", or "my battery is draining, I need to kill more apps, change kernels, switch CPU settings, blah blah blah blah blah."
Why are Androids even called "smartphones"? They have more problems than a farmer trying to grow crops in the winter. Its just pointless lol. I never play games, I go on facebook, (can't even sync anything = battery dead), check emails, and Reddit time to time.
WP7 would be perfect for me lol.
So, what happened to the Aug. 17th announcement?
