Samsung Galaxy S 4G Gingerbread 2.3.6 Update and Root
So i found this over at http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/6794946
if anyone has tried this let me know what happens and what you think. I bought this phone used a few weeks ago. I had no idea about rooting and unlocking and roms, I basically learned everyrthing thru research here....so naturally im a tad skeptical of things outside of this forum....silly
Ive rooted and unloked my phone. ive flashed several roms. right now i have the octane v2.3.5...smooth resposive fast
Not sure it's much if any different from what you can get out of the forums here. I'm running rooted 2.3.6.
I'm a 'better to be safe than sorry' type. Looks like that links makes a coupke of references back to here, anyway.

Don't use anything that isn't on this forum or in RootzWiki. You'll just get flamed for hard bricking by using something from another site.
Rooting and deleting bloat
I got this T959V last week and knew there had to be development on it. I got a Pandigital novel last christmas and learned some good lessons about android over at slatredroid. I was happy to find so much good work here and jumped right into flashing after slogging through this swamp (that's a compliment!) of info and choices. My phone arrived with Froyo 2.2.1 and stock T959VUVKD1. After getting my mind wrapped around the possibility of bricking the thing (which, thanks to the nature of the device and/or the excellent developers here, seems less likely than with the Pandigital) I used Odin to flash right to FW2.3.5, then tonight to FW2.3.6, T959VUVKJ5, kernel 2.6.35.7-T959VUVKF1-CL270364
I have not removed my sdcard (unlike w/pandigital flashing) or sim card on either of the three stops in my upgrading. HOWEVER, when I followed dsexton702's guide to rooting I did have to remove my battery - the red blowfish after loading his first rooting tarball nearly had me dropping a load in my pants. Couldn't power down with the button, so I pulled the battery and hoped. Put the battery back in, powered on and it booted. I thought factory reset, then reflashing 2.3.6 and forgetting about rooting. But I do want to remove some of the bloat from the device, so I just used odin to upload the second rooting tar and prayed! It worked! Thank you, dsxton702!
At least it seems to have worked. When I open titanium it now recognizes the device as rooted. I am using the freebie, which may be my real problem. But, anyway, here's where I am. When I try to delete preinstalled software like slacke by doing FORCE REMOVE APP in titanium I get this result:
finding update package
unknown volume for path [SYSTEM:/app/slackerradio.apk]
Can't mount SYSTEM:/app/slackerradio.apk
Installation aborted
Given these choices, I tried #4 first, then #1:
reboot system
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
The app remains. I know I have to buy the app to freeze other apps; the error message tells me so. But to delete, is my problem that I am using the titanium freebie, or am I doing something wrong with the freebie?
So has anyone tried it? I just want to make sure someone has confirmation before I try this one.

Neon - Use the GB Ext4 Starter Pack - It works.
Or use The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection - It works.
Or use ROM-ODIN-2.3.6-Gingerbread Offical - It works.
If there were torrents for downloads things would be much easier:laugh:
Help me with Valhalla Custom ROM flashing
Hello. I just thought this forum to be the appropriate one for posting my issue. I have SGS4G. Using XDA forums help I have been able to upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6. lumin30's "[GUIDES] Fresh out of box Galaxy S 4G | Heimdall One-Click For Dummies" I have flashed my Kernel and installed CWM. Thanks a lot lumin30 for your guide. It really helped a noob like me.
However I am facing below problems
1. From the same link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716 I chose Valhalla Black FB edition. And when i choose "vb-fb-build-4.zip" download link it downloads very slowly and evenif the total file size initially shows as 143MB, however only 20-40MB files are getting downloaded. I have tried several times. Same issue..not sure why. Anyone has any link from where I can get the latest Valhalla Black FB edition?
2. When I tried to take the Valhalla Black FB Edition from "https://github.com/teamacid/valhalla-black (Valhalla Black FB Edition on GitHub) and downloaded it it was around 141MB. The name was "teamacid-valhalla-black-build3-4-ge768021.zip". not sure if this is the FB version or not. Anyway when I try flashing this ROM I am getting "update opening and installation aborted" on top it says "choose the update file from sdcard" or any other location kind of information..
Could anyone help me with these questions. It will really be a great help as I need to flash the ROM. Do I also need to install some more files along with the ROM?
Please help!!

Im sure this isnt the first time this ha been asked, but i couldnt find it. I have an rooted infuse(AT&T), when trying to flas a new ROM it tells me that i need to flas CWM. I try to but it asks me to confirm phone model, the infuse is not listed. I havent picked another phone from the list because i didnt want to brick this one. Anybody know what might be wrong and how to fix it. THANKS

Aces, I'm think you're in danger of soft bricking your phone.
Try to read up a bit before you go on.
You need to select Samsung I9000 from the list.

Um....what are you doing? With CWM you're not using the ROM manager app right? You want to get into red recovery, that's what most instructions are talking about when they say cwm.
To get there: (if you have it)
Power off, then hold power button and volume up and down. (3 button)
Keep held, Samsung will come on, then turn off, when it comes on again let go of the buttons....should go into red recovery. That's where to flash roms from. Good luck.
X,
Sent from Mt. Olympus
yup. Pick i9000 and flash. also check out GTG's Infused ROM OP!! VERY useful info to get you started.
other than people telling you to read this whole thread fails.
OK you can use cwm from rom manager for the i9000. but first you need to replace the recovery binary with a modded one. that needs root.
search dev section on cwm fully working... or something to that matter. also search YouTube. YouTube is great for any type of DIY activity including Modding your phone.
there is an alternative to this by flashing the community kernel or the defuse kernel in Odin or heimdall. that not only doesn't need root but will root your phone, enable voodoo lagfix, and give you red cwm. there is a one click heimdall package for the defuse kernel. personally I disable voodoo beforehand to speed up the process. to do this open the sdcard and create a folder and subfolder having the path /sdcard/Voodoo/disable-lagfix
to be clear you don't create /sdcard that already exists. it is the root of the SD card. if you use the built in file manager it wont show as /sdcard but will be "home" or something.
so open my files or other file manager, navigate to home which is normally the sd card, if not navigate to /sdcard and create a folder named "Voodoo" capital "V" then open Voodoo and create "disable-lagfix" once that is done you can flash the defuse kernel or the community kernel. then flash a rom then if it all goes well reboot into red cwm and enable lagfix and reboot again. it takes a while and the phone talks to you in sexy female robot voices for a while.
Thanks all. Maybe im in over my head a little. Ive been playing my my inspire 4G and it has been working fine(knock on wood), flashed several ROMS. I will read a little more into it and try what yall said to do. Thanks everybody

I never had an inspire but there is no way this is harder. there is no locked nand on Samsung devices. just a weird recovery that is easy to work around on froyo since it was so easy to root. future devices will get increasingly hard but you have to understand that Samsung isn't taking anti-flashing measures like HTC and Motorola it is security measures to prevent exploits for being used in malware, things are getting harder because it is getting harder to root android. at some point the only way to flash is gonna be to wait for a leaked rom, edit the images and then flash. or some complicated way we haven't seen yet.

np.
IF you're looking to go from froyo to a gb rom,
I suggest starting here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
learning how to flash with heimdall is pretty simple.
Flash it once in download mode. Flash it again with the bootloaders box checked.
reboot and you're in uckj4.
Then flash the kernel to give you recovery
then flash the gb rom you want...
there are other methods...it's a matter of prefs

The nandroid WILL work fine. And as for ROM manager.... It's a no go for us. Only use it to fix permissions.... and only do that if you have problems.

You dont need to do anything with rom manager but fix permissions. Dont worry about flashing cwm with it, you already have it. but just so you know we would use the tmobile version because we don't have one.
The backup should work fine, if not, no big deal just odin the stock tar file from sammobile.
i think i saw that stock file somewhere in my searching, i might just go find it just in case...if i some how get messed up playing around ,your saying i can just boot into download mode in odin and install the stock tar?

You speak too fast !!!!
1. If you use ROM manager to "update" recovery, you do need the T mobile one.....BUT BUT BUT, it will throw you to an older version.......which may or may not give problems..............so forget it,.
2. Want to know if you nandorid works. Simple. Just go into CWM and restore it. Then you will know ! Seriously, if it buggers your phone, you can easily go back to stock. This is the only way you will ever sleep at night !!
How do I know? That is the only way I figured it out for myself my very first time !
Have fun !
i did just for giggles try and go back and restore it in cwm (was worried to do it cause my phone is working very very nicely) but i did and it gave me an error something about not being able to mount ex sd card ....thats what has got me worried...as you know there is not an ex sd card that came with the phone so everything was done on the internal one..and thats where the back up is stored with cwm....it gave me an option to just reboot and i did and everything is fine..but i still am left wondering if the backup will work when i need it.....will cwm be able to restore from internal sd card? it didnt when i didnt need it to but was that just because everything was ok to start with??

That "error" is normal about xet sd card. I have done nandroid backups to both external and intenal SD. Both work fine. The internal SD also is NOT deleted whn you wipe data etc. for flashing ROMs.
Again, since the ext sd backup works........the best way to know is to try. Create nandroid to internal card.....then restore from internal ! Bingo, now you know !
Another good option is to copy the backup to a computer. Then you can put is on to the ext sd card if anything evil happens.
Keep smiling !
Yes. Everything will be fine. Trust CWM. It has never failed.
On another note... ohmygod a respectable noob! ^.^

Hey everyone.
Im generally pretty savvy with androids. I rooted and S-offed my HTC Desire, I had a nexus S for a bit until it got ran over... Now im stuck with this Galaxy S 4G, which has been nothing but headaches because for some reason... this thing is impossible to root to me. Ive tried Hemidall, Super1clicks, Odin etc..
Can someone please just point me in the direction of rooting this POS? Im hoping that once its rooted and running stock, I wont hate this thing as much... because so far, Its a horrible purchase.
I just need someone to post a link to where I need to be. Ive searched.. and im absolutely lost. Even the Rootz wiki was useless to me.
Thanks.

Read that then understand what bhundven means by DONT FLASH BOOTLOADERS!!
You can use the heimdall one clicks he created to get root access and then flash any rom that DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS INCLUDED. That means do not use gremlin remover period. Once you get rooted make a backup and keep it stored in as many places as possible. If you flash the ics variants you will have to use the stock kj6 HOC and then need to flash the HOC for antonx kernel to get root back. At that point you can flash your nandroid or whatever rom you want. AGAIN AS LONG AS IT DOESNT HAVE BOOTLOADERS included.

"Can I get step by step directions please?"
Sure, here you are!
"What?! Your not going to remotely root my phone for me? F this place"
Good luck sir, you have the patience of a saint and the drive of a tiger!
OK let's be honest you gave up kinda quick.......
The forum that eollie linked you to was a forum talking about the phone that you bought, which is an apparent offshoot of the t-959v and according to what Masonite found out, "our" roms work on the t-959w but you cannot flash the bootloaders.
Here is the one click link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498 just boot into download mode and use this but absolutely don't flash bootloaders and it should be OK, no promises.
Eollie was right for linking you there, all the info you needed about your model phone was on that forum, that one click is in the dev sticky which everybody should read.
There has been a flood of people not researching a little bit first before posting and that's why people flamed you but you should not give up, its a good phone and our devs are dedicated and have put in a lot of time on this model, you should be happy your phone can even support all the great roms that are available.
I'm not being mean but seriously, come on, all the info is there, no need to get mad.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using xda premium
Edit: or Google search how to use heimdall if your confused, I learn off a damn YouTube video..........
Our devs didn't create heimdall and don't support it but it is a great program and the dev has to build the individual one click for the phone, we should be happy to have it that easily available.

You'll need to flash one of the back to stock files that you got linked to in that thread which will put you on stock GB with no root. DO NOT FLASH THE BOOTLOADERS. You'll very likely brick if you do.
After this download the AntonX kernel from bhundven's one click thread and flash that. That will give you a custom kernel with CWM built in and root.
Needless to say, this is all for the SGH-T959V which theoretically should work on the SGH-T959W. As you'll read any disclaimer on this forum, you're resposible for anything you flash and the damage that may occur to your device.
Thanks for that fb I forgot a few steps if he wants to be on mtd roms, I assumed he could read from that point............ but your right for knowing better

Thank you very much, and I'm sorry for getting angry. I've had this phone for almost 4 months now, and haven't been able to do anything with it. Quite frustrating.
So, I currently have the Tmobile ROM on my phone, so I'm halfway there it appears!
I'm going to download the other ROM as soon as I get home.
Thanks so much! Next up.. Learning to flash with Odin, and not ROM manager.
It seemed like everything I tried wasn't working with 2.3.6. Superoneclick etc.
I was waiting for a new exploit, but it never came. I tried YouTube tutorials, text directions.. Everything would fail, or give me "read only" errors. I feared bricking, so I stopped.. But I searched the forum and came across the thread he linked me to, but it said no bootloaders, and all the ones I saw had bootloaders. Wasn't until tonight that I noticed it's a 2 part flash process, with the second being the bootloaders.
I think I started this thread at 3am.
Lesson learned.
In heimdall, you can click a little box that says "flash bootloaders" to toggle flashing them on and off! .... or maybe it was odin? I can't remember... been a while since I used them!
After being away for the weekend, I came home, and BAM... fully rooted. Amazing! and FINALLY!!!
Thanks everyone for your help...
I just have another issue.
I wanna flash this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305145
It says its CWM.. but there is a huge disclaimer that we shouldn't use ROM Manager on the development page, which is a bit confusing. Since this ROM isnt Odin flashable... what do i do?
Thanks again.
So I was confused about this when I first started. I'm not at my computer but I can help. In order to flash Roms via cmw you have to turn off your phone hold both volume rockers on the phone then hold the power button and hold till you get into cwm recovery. That will get you into cmw recovery mode. Then wipe data factory rest, from there go back to the main menu and select the install zip from sd card and find the zip file you want to flash and select it and install. Should be good to go.

Nevermind... im a complete goon. I got it, lol.
Thanks
First off i will make this clear I DID NOT CREATE ANY OF THESE I AM JUST RE-HOSTING THEM i know alot of download links failed after awhile an seeing how there is only about 1-2 people still on this forum that actually try to contribute. and i hope alot of people will find this useful ..
i will add what it is an what to do with it after the links .
SIDEKICK 4G files
ADB Fileshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/2k0wp2qmd805oq7/ADB_Files.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?a2ytuvc4qandhfi
extract to c:\
you will have to make a folder name it adb
this is to enter reboot recovery and download mode with out a root.
ODIN KD1 Fileshttps://www.dropbox.com/s/w2lqhszgxajp564/Odin3+v1.61andsk4g.pit.rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?t1gvfrwqq4n1y3d
this needs 2 other files which i dont have anymore but either way i recommend the kg2 files
ODIN KG2https://www.dropbox.com/s/uddzc6ss9v31lh8/t839-Sidekick4G-UVKG2-One-Click.jar
this is if you need to restore to stock
just put your phone into download mode either through the phone or adb files above
but this may take a few trys (i did my phone took the whole night to get back to a fresh stock)
Super-One Click to Root Devicehttp://www.mediafire.com/download.php?rj08beywov4thc1
this is the main thing you will need to root the device just download unzip in to a new folder and run (make sure device is in debugging mode) settings > application > development > debugging mode
Beginners packhttp://d-h.st/QxO
This pack has all the stuff you need for beginning sk4g root/cwm also has the kg2 one click odin which may be needed for faulty root(does happen not all the time so if you get an error you may have to odin back to stock then re root)
i hope anyone who does have any files will upload them here to help others as i dont have every file that may be needed..
Extras:
KJ2 Lockscreens
(if you dont like the update status in the notification center go to settings>display and turn off before flashing this)https://www.dropbox.com/s/kypk18gqszx4onj/KJ2_Locks_v1.1_-_PDT.zip

I have a question...I'm trying to root the sidekick 4g using the superone click method...When I download the drivers and turn on USB Debugging my phone doesn't do anything and neither does my computer telling me a phone is plugged in...What can I do?

There is aother set of drivers you can download that work with the sidekick I forgot the name should be in a sticky tho
Also it might be the computer or cord sometimes the pins in them get damaged so id suggest you try another cord or computer / usb port
If the computer isn't reading the device is plugged in even if everything else is working flawless then its the phone so try turning it off an plugging it in as then none of the systems are running an should charge if so then you may have to odin which is a pain

Thanks I changed the data cable and was able to root. I flashed cwm using Rom manager and it says it's installed but when I put reboot into recovery it takes me here doesn't make sense...

You have to stay away from ROM manager, it flashes the wrong recovery and well... You'll be stuck at stock. This phone isn't like too many others, it seems to hide recovery within the ROM you are using, then when you flash a custom ROM you get a recovery embedded in there. I believe if you use one of the one click installers it adds the voodoo (red recovery) to your phone, which is the one you need.
So there are some annoying steps to flash your first ROM, but after you do all is good and you can flash like any other phone. Look in the general section for a sticky called noon guide to root or something, I believe that's what I used to get the red recovery, but I used a different method to root as I'm not a fan of one click anything
If you get stuck post back and someone here will be glad to jump in and help

Can I do this to get cwm http://theunlockr.com/2012/10/14/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-the-t-mobile-sidekick-4g/ I want to install the Jb Nexus rom...this is very confusing...I have a my touch 4g and it wasn't this complicated to flash cwm.
yes that looks about right to me, heres a quick synopsis of how i first rooted
1 searched out all files needed,
drivers
clockwork recovery
first rom i wanted to try
i got that recovery file and update.zip
2 then i was able to dig up THIS as if for learning purposes alone i dont use on clicks (and this will work with windows too)
3 after i was rooted i exchanged the recovery file in a similar way as laid out in the link you have
4 booted into that recovery (yellow)
acctually i think i just found the thread that helped me the most HERE
i know it seems complicated but its easy, if you mess things up you should learn to odin or heimdall anyway as if you ever f up you use this to go back to scratch and start over.
yeah it may have seemed easier on your glacier but htc and samsung build their firmware/software very different and in many ways i find the htc phone more complicated and are more easily bricked.
anyway follow the guides and youll be good
happy flashing!

Thanks, I did what the other guide said but when I do reinstall package I get an error of E:signature verification failed. Should I try deleting any cwm I did before from Rom Manager, not sure what to delete though...I'm almost there...
if you have a sig failed error my guess is you dont have the right clockwork, you cant use what comes with rom manager, in fact your best off deleting it and not using it, on any phone (but thats a different matter) THIS IS THE RECOVERY YOU NEED just to start, then you will end up flashing the voodoo lag fix recovery, once you have the voodoo (red) recovery your good to go, really its been enough time since i did all this that i may not be the best person to ask, but i do remember not seeing a single guide with all the info i needed, i had to take piece from here and a bit from there... i guess my recommendation is to read through the coutless posts of people attempting their first time and failing, you learn best from this but its time consuming
you need the file up there ^ an then follow this down here (if you get lost please tell me ill help if I can)
When cwm is finished downloading rename it to recovery (it will be a recovery.zip)
Put this file in your sd card but don't put it in ayfolders
The with the same file you want to extract it to (exapmle downloads) a new folder
With the file that is in a folder you want to move this to system\bin\
It will then ask if you want to replace a file an cick yes
Now go into recovery an reinstall packages
To download a rom
Install the zip to sdcard
Go into recovery
Reinstall packages
Go to backup and restore an make a backup (just in case)
Now wipe all data cache and go to advance an wipe dalvik
Go back an go to mounts
Unmount system
Go back
Go to install zip
Go to choose zip
Find the rom you downloaded an click it
Now wait
You will here a smexy robot talk to you xD
Wait atleast 10 mins for everything to start up an run
An you are done
(Hope these helped)

This is just an updated/ bumb kinda thing
If anyone needs help don't be shy I won't steal your device c:
An ill try to help you not break it c:
I will post tuts up for everything later today I will also create a beginers zip for sk4g with root/recover/update/odin kg2. These are the main things you need (gb has its own list of things you need I will put a zip for that as well but will need a password to download as I'm not going to be the person who lead you to brick your device
Anyways if you need anything or looking for something ill try my best to find it (most roms die then links die just as fast I can't find something that's not there)
