I've had a search of the forum (and web in general) and cannot find an answer to this question.
I would like to root my device (I've found the instructions on your forum, thank you) WITHOUT unlocking it. In that situation (rooted, locked, stock), would I be able to adjust the CPU clock settings?: not necessarily to overclock, but to prevent it from automatically underclocking. If so, which app would I use to do that on the tf700? I have seen a few in the play store that allow cpu clock adjustment without a custom ROM, but am not sure which one would suit the tf700.
I am aware of the "HIGH PERFORMANCE" mode, but when I look into it further this does not achieve what I want as it appears some cores remain disabled and the processor clock remains variable even in this mode.
Thank you for your help.
Rich.
I am pretty sure you can use System Tuner to do these things, if not SetCPU can do that for you I would try System Tuner first though.

+1 Clemsyn’s kernel series should allow OC/UV I tested them on system tuner fine.
But, wouldn't you need to be unlocked in order to install a custom kernel? I always unlock my devices, so I'm not sure, but I thought you had to be unlocked in order to install a custom recovery, which is needed to install a custom kernel? Again, I always unlock, so I'm not sure about that (it's been a while since I've used an unlocked device!).

Since he simply wants to prevent underclocking (not undervolting), though, he would not necessarily need a new kernel, would he? Just something as simple as root + SetCPU (or similar app) to change the lower end clock would be sufficient, correct?
Or am I missing something?

asus says there is no way to relock but we will see if the devs here cant figure something out
You CAN NOT Relock. The prime devs worked on it for months, and couldn't get anything working. If you decide to unlock you void your warranty and no longer get official ota's. You do get access to custom roms though.

Correct. The only reason I would recommend unlocking, is so that you can install a custom rom. If you do not want to install a custom rom you shouldn't unlock.

Everything works on the tablet still. Asus just has your SN blacklisted
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
you can update, however not by ota. you update by flashing roms that are updated.
There may not be a way (yet) of relocking the bootloader, but there should be a way of preventing ASUS from logging the serial. From the decompiled unlock tool, the tool is sending something to https://mdm.asus.com/DMServer/DeviceState. However, that may not matter. In a previous thread about this (for the Transformer Prime), one developer found that the result returned from the ASUS server is stored in a variable that's never used

I doubt they blacklist it, they did after all provide the tool. Of course, they do say they won't officially support if you do unlock, but that doesn't necessarily mean they wouldn't if you asked them.

AFAIK the unlock tool requires an internet connection, this is for the purpose of notifying ASUS on what tablets have been unlocled

Check up with the Prime forum - they have much more experience with this issue. AFAIK, unlocking means your on your own and ASUS means it.

SOMEHOW, the "Device is UnLocked" has disappeared from boot screen
As I mentioned here just earlier today (or the full thread here), the "Device is UnLocked" has vanished from my boot screen. The screen that first shows up after you start your TF300.
I had gone through A LOT the past couple of days trying to UN-BRICK my device. Once I fixed my TF300, the "Device is UnLocked" is no longer in the upper left-hand corner anymore.
I have no clue what I did, or even if it's really "Locked" again. All I know is that it's gone. I think I might have accidentally tweaked something that might have just turned off the actual "Device is UnLocked" text. But I don't know...
-h3llsdr0id
I've only had my TF700 for less then a week and I know already like my Galaxy S2&S3 I'm going to be rooting and installing a custom ROM on my TF700, strange that I didn't feel this way with my old Nexus 7 but man this TF700 is sweet but suffers from lag at times to where I need to do the Power/volume Down cleanout at least once a day and that helps but not enough...
As with my Galaxy S3 I don't want the newest wildest ROM rather one that is close to stock as possible YET is faster, cleaner and doesn't bog down... The double and triple taps to accomplish tasks or while browsing is driving me crazy already, I am totally surprised by this seeing this is the top of the line tablet and as good or better then the iPad hardware/processor wise..
So any suggestions and/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!! Now I'm off to start reading up on unlock and root procedures
PS: I am believe my TF700 is up to date (Running Stock JB ver. 4.1.1)...

Interesting sdbags in the little reading up I have done that does seem to be the most logical choice.. Reminds me of KyanROM I'm running on my GS3, well other then one is ICS and the other is JB lol... But both look to be stripped down/slightly jacked up stock ROMS, I always find these types have practically little conflicts with apps and include more customazation without taking a battery hit, speaking of lol.. Are you running CleanROM now and has your battery life increased or decreased?? Obviously that isn't as important with the Tablets(you won't miss calls if you get in trouble battery wise with a Tab). Also is there any Lag with CleanROM?? It is my biggest gripe and THE reason I'm looking to Root and Flash

Pretty sure SBDags is running a version of CleanROM
Do a bit more reading up on the ROM development work for the Infinity.
You'll most likely be very happy stepping away from a stock ROM tablet and going with a custom version.

It can hardly be argues that sbdags is impartial in the matter -- I'm sure you are aware he is the developer of CROMI?
That being said, CROMI is one hell of a kick-*** ROM, and I'm currently running it myself -- it's VERY good in all regards, be it battery life or performance and fluidity. A lot of that depends on the kernel you use it with -- Clemsyn's 650 versions are really good candidates.
A little bit of the lag is still there, admittedly, but that's hardware-related and no developer can remedy that. CleanROM saved the 700 for a lot of users, and CROMI takes that a step further. Props to sbdags, obviously!

I actually didn't realize SBDags was the Dev for CleanROM lol... Seems to be a very popular ROM indeed!!
Haven't had much time to read up on unlocking and rooting yet but I'm seeing what version OS I have is quite important to how to root, I have JB 4.1.1 and I understand rooting and unlocking is different then those who had ICS..
Thank you for the Kernel/ROM combination suggestion, haven't had to deal with that much with my GS3 but with my old GS2 getting the Kernel/ROM Combo right was pretty tricky, sometimes different modems had to also be flashed to get it right..
Well after some reading here it looks a bit more complicated then I imagined to root and flash my TF700 compared to my phones...
is this correct:
First I need to get ICS Version for my TF700 off Asus site, put it on a microcard and flash back to ICS..
Then unlock, root and install RootLock.
Then update to JB.
Check and make sure my Root is still intact.
Finally install CleanROM..
CORRECT??

TWRP _is_ a recovery for flashing stuff, and CleanROM is pre-rooted, so you don't need to root it. And if you decide to install a non-rooted ROM, you can still use TWRP to flash a Superuser app from a zip to get root.

The tool Thats_OK pointed you toward is probably the same as you found, and the same as for the TF201 Prime and TF300T. I guess ASUS like KISS principles, hehe. It should work for JB as wel, IF you get some cooperation from the ASUS unlock server side. Apparently a lot of people have had trouble unlocking due to their device's serial number not being in the database. That's probably the biggest hurdle to overcome in the process.

adb/fastboot is nothing but a few .exe command. All you have to do is download Android SDK on your PC and install it like other software. During the install, just select Android packages (there are many in the option), should be only 2. After that there is a script (its a .bat file) to install custom recovery. This script will kick off adb and fastboot command so you automatically, all you have to do is double click on the script while connects your device to your pc. Once you have custom recovery, you home free.

Hello everyone,
I've recently purchased HTC One S (S3). It is T-mobile phone.
Today I installed CPU Spy in it to check when and for how much my phone goes to deep sleep. But on opening CPU Spy, it gave an error, "No states file found. Are you sure your phone is compatible?. If you are running a custom ROM or kernel, try contacting its developer to inform him that the states file not readable."
My question is, is my phone rooted? Did someone root this phone?
The kernel version is:

And secondly is there any way I can check whether my phone is rooted or was ever rooted in the past or not?

as far as I know the "root" in the name is only the name of the user which compiled the kernel.
root is the "admin" user on linux
so, [email protected]#1 means the kernel was compiled by the adminuser on the linux machine with the name abm010#1

Go into bootloader (press down volume and power button simultaneously) if it says locked at the top, you're phone is unrooted.
If it says tampered, it is probably rooted.
If you're phone has a custom recovery (like clockworkmod or teamwinprojects) installed it will probably be rooted.
Check for these things and you'll know if you're phone is clean or not

If you see 'locked' and miss the word 'tampered', it never has been rooted.
The kernel is stock htc, they use the word root in almost all their kernels.

Yeah definitely. I was actually confused to see the word root in kernel version, I thought it was a rooted phone
And no doubt it in awesome phone really, i m loving it. So far no lags, very fast phone (for my usage), responsive.
The only issue so far i have seen is of battery consumption by stock browser, which i have posted in some old similar thread in 'one s general forum'. The stock browser is taking too much battery and there is no option to exit it. It seems it remains in RAM even if i m not using it (though not sure).
Other than that it is one of the best phones. Though it has S3 processor, still havent found any issue or slow response from it.
And the stock keyboard for me was very difficult to type on. But downloaded ICS keyboard from play store, which is quite better.

Please make any comments there.
----------
Motochopper is a root method made for the Motorola Razr HD by djrbliss (Dan Rosenberg), but is said to work on many other devices, including non-motorola ones.
Confirmed working with:
TF300T - 4.1.1
TF300T - 4.2.1
TF300TG - 4.1.1
TF201
TF700 - 4.0.3
TF700 - 4.1.1
TF700 - 4.2.1
ME301T - 4.2.1 (Memo Smart Pad 10)
Motorola Droid 2 Global - 2.3.4 (1 success, 1 failure?)
Failures:
Motorola Droid 4 - 4.1.2
TF700KL - 4.1.1
Notes:
It installs SuperSu (which will ask to be updated)
It installs busybox 1.17 (which you will have to update manually)
Backup your root with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper!!!
This does not touch your bootloader.
This is mainly for people that just want root, and don't want to deal with (or need) unlocking.
FYI: How to access "Developer Options" to set USB debugging: (Jelly Bean 4.2)
Open up your device’s “Settings”. This can be done by pressing the Menu button while on your home screen and tapping “System settings”
Now scroll to the bottom and tap “About phone” or “About tablet”.
At the “About” screen, scroll to the bottom and tap on “Build number” seven times.
Make sure you tap seven times. If you see a “You are now a developer!” message pop up, then you know you have done it correctly.
Done! By tapping on “Build number” seven times, you have unlocked USB debugging mode on Android 4.2 and higher. You can now enable/disable it whenever you desire by going to “Settings” -> “Developer Options” -> “Debugging” ->” USB debugging”.

I was testing this tool 5 minutes ago and i confirm it's working.I will also update the AiO thread asap.
Confirmed and worked for me on 4.2
Any idea if it might work for a padfone?

Dan Rosenberg himself said it worked on a vast amount of devices.

This tool will not touch your bootloader so it's not going to brick your device, just try it out and report back.
Good job spotting this!
I only have a few questions. I haven't rooted before because from what I've read that would require unlocking the bootloader, which I don't really want - for now Since this doesn't touch the bootloader:
- Does it break DRM for some apps?
- Does it stop you from getting OTA updates?
- Any other negative impacts of rooting (other than security issues, which I can live with)?
Thanks!

1) No, only bootloader unlocking does that afaik
2) No
3) None that I know of but unexperienced users could create some "damage" if they use some tools without having a proper knowledge.
Just go ahead, root and have fun

nope. (though i've heard of some apps that wont work on a rooted device - but I think thats part of the past now)
nope, but an OTA update will break root if you don't have it backed up with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper (or some other means)
nope. There is a security risk of keeping Debugging on as someone could potentially get into your device while connected to wifi... Or the risk of making stupid mistakes with root privileges (but that's user error!)...

1. YES, (I know that VUDU will not work on a rooted device), but, using OTA Rootkeeper will allow you to temporarily unroot and then the DRM programs will work. Turn root back on when done.
2. No.
3. Maybe, just be careful with system stuff. (and always backup everything before changing anything)
Thanks everyone! Am now rooted Went without a hitch, though I did worry about all the "adb server is out of date. killing...." messages as the script ran!
Now to investigate this Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper of which you speak and delete that nagging /system folder that's taking up space! (i kid, i kid)

yeah, i always remove that stupid /system folder right before i sell a device on craigslist...
I have rooted my tab with this, very easy.
Is it possible to install a custom rom with root? or must you be unlocked for this?
Unlocking is not possible with my tab unfortunately, so can i tweak my tab on another way?

The biggest problem with a locked device is that you can't install a custom recovery. The second biggest problem is that you can't install a custom kernel.
With root, you can still modify the whole /system partition, so you can apply a lot of tweaks. However, if you mess up and it doesn't boot anymore, your only way out is using the stock recovery to reinstall the stock ROM and start modding from scratch (of course you can make backups).

Are there any significant ROOT tweaks that can make much of a difference to 4.2 really?
Most things I saw were for ICS and since insignificant. Also apprantly browser to SD no longer works so that rules that out?

As far as I can tell the stock browser is a lot faster since I installed browser2ram on my JB 4.2.1

Have you read this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2227123&page=3
I have installed browser 2 ram and executed the following:
mount -t tmpfs -o size=50m browser_cache /data/data/com.android.browser/cache
But i do not notice that the browser is faster, how did you do it?
The above command must be set after every reboot.
I can confirm it works also, with an Ubuntu Linux host. Note for it to work I had to run it as root on the host side (otherwise the adb.linux binary could not see the tablet).
Locked bootloader, factory firmware with the 4.2.1 OTA update a few days ago. Never wiped, so I have all sorts of cruft accumulated which did not interfere with the rooting process.
Another thing that almost got me, as I was not paying attention. The rooting script appeared to hang, eventually I realized the tablet screen had turned off but it was waiting at a prompt for me (asking if I wanted Google to verify the new binary for me - I declined for obvious reasons).

So.. I rooted it.
Other then the "browser 2 ram" ability now on a locked device.
What other advantages do my tablet have now that it didn't before?
Is it possible to disable fsync with the stoch rom and root? So far i can see not.
So I have 4.2.1 loaded on my tf700 and have not unlocked the boot loader yet nor is it rooted. My warrenty is almost up so I'm looking at going into custom roms. I've been doing some reading and noticed that the asus unlocker isnt for jb. Is this true? If so how do I get my loader unlocked?
Also I've decided to load CROMIx on my tablet, should I do the data2sd mod along with it or just flash to the internal sd?
Any other advice would be great aswell.

No, the ASUS unlocker has never been changed form the TF201 one (and possibly even the TF101 edition). They will work no matter what version on Android you are on.

So, just run the unlocker. If it won't work, it won't work, but that has to do with your device's serial number not being in the database and nothing to do with the version of Android you're on.

For your first steps, I'd recommend just flashing to internal storage.

I'd load up CROMI-X, look through the recommended apps and games list in the relevant forum, and just browse through the forums a bit. I cannot help but mention that your first question, for example, has been answered quite a few times before, so the answers to your other questions is probably in here somewhere.
