I recently purchased my TF700- I wasn't aware of the fact that unlocking the boot loader would void your warranty, and that there was a slightly more complicated process for prepping the TF700 for flashing roms and kernels compared to previous android devices. (This is my first tablet, so I don't know if this is normal for tablets though!) Plus the fact that I need to be on ICS to do everything initially.
And just a BTW, this is comparing it to my experiences w/ the G1, Epic 4G, GS2, and the GS3- where I never actually had to deal with unlocking the boot-loader directly/or having the risk of ruining my warranty.
So basically what happened was that I read through the forums and learned that unlocking the bootloader would void your warranty- and being that it is always risky business + the fact this tablet is a lot more expensive than a phone- I decided I wasn't going to be rooting/flashing roms and kernels and etc, on my TF700. I didn't want the risk of bricking something I just paid $600 bucks for. So I took the OTA update to Jellybean.
With further research though, I found out about NvFlash, and then it would make my tablet brickproof. And that immediately sparked my interest! I read though, that it does not work with the .30 firmware though.
This is where I got a bit confused- I know I can downgrade to ICS (the .30 v tho) and then unlock/root/then flash stuff.
BUT, by me taking the OTA update to 4.1.1 JB, did I **** up my ability to use NvFlash? Cause I really want too unlock my phone and flash roms, but I'm just really scared of bricking my device.
If anyone could help with what my plan of action should be, it would be much appreciated, thanks!
Can't be done unfortunately, you need .26 firmware for nvflash. At the moment you're out of luck :/
****! Well just my luck :/.
I was going to send in my TF700 back in anyways for a replacement since the screen was popping out in the corner, so I guess I'll wait till then!
Thanks for the response!
Just out of curiosity, why doesn't downgrading back to an ICS rom do the trick? Is there something that gets left behind by Asus's JB rom that doesn't get downgraded when you go back to Asus's ICS rom?
Sorry to revive an old thread but I couldn't find a pertinent new thread about this.
Thanks!

You need a bootloader that does not check signatures to install the hacked bootloader. You cannot downgrade to such a bootloader, because all later ones do check signatures, and the unsigned ones are rejected.

Well, Asus had patched the security hole with .26 ICS firmware. They updated the next version of ICS which is .30 and this blocked the exploide. The signature (key) from the ICS .30 is no longer the same as ICS .26. So if you tried to downgrade to .26, you're going to see signature mismatch and it will failed. The signature on ICS .30 and all of the JB are the same, so you can upgrade or downgrade from 30 and up....Here is where the story ended!!
Ah, OK that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

Downgrade from JellyBean to ICS
Hi,
I am very new hear and not sure how to start a new thread. I just purchased the Asus TF700t because it was supposed to have ICS, but I found it has JellyBean. Is there a way to downgrade it to ICS?
Thank you.

You need to look around a bit.
I attempted an answer for you in another thread that you had replied in.

Before anybody says to use the search function, I've been looking through the general topics non-stop for one that applies to my situation, and either it slipped through the cracks (likely) or it doesn't exist (not likely).
Basically, my tablet is rooted and unlocked, and I'm on ICS; the first one that had face unlock in it. I'd really like to update my tab to JB, but I need to be pointed toward directions for updating a rooted and unlocked tab. But on top of that, I also need recent instructions, because I know that earlier attempts at getting this thing updated have resulted in lots of bricked tabs.
If anybody could tell me if it's possible to update my tablet to JB right now, I'd appreciate it, and if someone has figured out how to do it, can you please point me toward that thread? I'd really appreciate it.

I'm in the same configuration, custom-ics-rom with twrp recovery on unlocked device.
I believe the first thing to do is enabling NVFLASH, that will make things safer also in the worst cases.
I did that and now hopefully I have an unbrickable device.
I'm a bit confused on how to go forward, I know that there are two versions of twrp, maybe I should install the JB version, booting inside it and then flash the downloaded JB update from ASUS site, or use the twrp for ICS for flashing and after that install the JB version ?
Anyone knows what is the correct option ?

Keep ICS, as JB will cause much trouble especially if you are rooted, trying to OC and is generally slowein my opinion
I prefer to try it anyway, tomorrow I will try flashing, after all if something will go wrong I should be able to recover with nvflash.

Thank you, Grim. That's disappointing to hear about JB, but if you think that my current build is better than that (which makes sense considering I've seen at least one thread about downgrading from JB to ICS), then I will keep my tab on ICS for now, and thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

If you have twrp recovery, can't you download the jb ROM from the Asus site for your region and flash it in? I'm unlocked and that's how I upgraded one version of jb to another, but my ICS to jb was ota, so in your case I can't speak from experience. There is a full upgrade, and root guide in the general section.

I just managed to do what you re looking to achieve.
I m pretty noob so it tok me a whole day to figure it out.
So first download jb update on asus website (pick the right one for ur type of tf300)
Flash it through adb
At that point i got jb installation working but bootloop
So i flashed jb version of twrp (adb)
I then went in recovery and flashed clean rom 2.5 which worked flawlessly
Just for the fun i did factory reset afetrwards and stock jb eventually launched right

I successfully installed jb following the guide on this site, the only thing that was not working was the flashing of the stock rom, neither given options worked (fastboot flash recovery or fastboot flash system) , I discovered that our eepad has a partition nmed staging used for firmware installs. I then flashed with
fastboot flash staging blolb
and all went good.
Btw I find the JB better than ics, more responsive and smoother, and also if it is not yet overcooked.
Hi guys,
I've searched everywhere and can't get a definitive answer on this so here goes -
I'm a noob when it comes to Android, having recently defected from being an Apple Disciple (I got hacked off with iTunes and bored in general with the Daycare Centre which is iOS) and have recently acquired an Acer A700 tablet.
I have installed the JB update OTA and everything is working fine and am chomping at the bit to get it booted, but most of the posts I have read regarding unlocking the bootloader and rooting it relate to ICS.
My questions are -
Does the bootloader process apply regardless of Firmware? (Are there different versions for different Firmwares)
Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent tutorial on how to do this?
What happens regarding a future update? Do I have to revert back to stock and update from there or can i jump from one ROM to another? (I'm assuming that I can't use the OTA updates any more)
Sorry for the long OP and thanks in advance for your answers.

No problem. Seeing you are on JB, then you have a JB bootloader.
You need to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953917
And download Vorbeths easyroot2.0. It's for the 700.
You have to unlock your bootloader first, which shouldn't be an issue for you. Easy instructions for that.
Then download his package to a folder on your PC. (not sure, but you may have to download each file individually) Open a command window (shift & right mouse click) and type in whatever his instructions say. Should be painless.
Make sure USB Debugging is turned on first in your tablet (Settings/Developer Options/USB Debugging), and make sure you have the Acer Drivers installed on your PC.
Then connect, wait 30 seconds, and run his batch file.
You should be ok.
MD
Oh yes, one more thing, once you unlock your bootloader, chances are you will not be able to get OTA. And the only way to re-lock the bootloader is to install a stock rom.
Thanks!
Thanks for the reply. I am now the owner of a fully rooted A700!
Had a few issues during unlocking the bootloader. That thing timeouts quick! Also, didn't realise you had to run the .bat file while the tablet was on the Bootloader USB protocol screen. I thought you had to wait until it booted fully into JB.
Anyway, took the plunge and thanks again for your help.

No problem. I thought I mentioned it timed out in about 5 seconds These days I don't remember much
Yeah, I haven't looked at Vorbeth's script, so I don't know which screen he launches it from. With mine for the 701, you can be when the tab is running normal. No difference in the end result though
Happy Hunting!

One last question - do I have to install Clockwork Recovery for re-flashing the stock images or is it just a case of renaming it update. zip and putting it on an SD Card? Any chance you can point me in the right direction of the most recent/stable build? Is it easy to install?
Thanks again.

Well, this is a trouble spot.
If you wish to install a custom rom, then you will need to install CWM. The most recent version.
If you want to try your luck at installing a stock rom, my opinion, is to leave the stock recovery inplace. I haven't had luck in installing stock update.zips, as Acer has made them very specific. So I can't be much help to you in that.
However, you can always flash back to CWM or a stock JB recovery pretty easy. Personally, unless you plan on flashing a custom, I would just leave the stock recovery.
MD
Sometimes "leaked" update appear here in the forums. They are unofficial. And you never know if they improve things, or make things worse. So be careful.

So, just for future reference, how would I go about re-flashing the stock image? I'm assuming it's saved on the tablet in a separate partition?
I've decided to stick with the stock rooted ROM but would like to know how to re-flash for when Key Lime Pie and future updates are released.
And, seeing as how you haven't steered me wrong so far, I though I'd pick your brains one last time.
Hope you don't mind!
Ok, I got a TF300t for christmas. I couldn't wait, powered it up, and before I even hit the forums I went ahead and applied the JB update. :crying: I know... So here I am, running stock. I'm at the most recent update as of a few days ago. I've been up and down the forum trying to figure out the root situation, and there's all sorts of instructions for different .17, .26, .29, etc. roms. 1st, which number are you looking at for that? My first guess was build number so I guess that puts me at JRO03C.US_epad-10.4.2.20-20121228 (which following the above I'm guessing would get shortened now to 2.20?)
1st Q Is the only way to currently root/TWRP this bad boy to DL the ASUS unlock apk and run it? From what I can see a LOT of people are having issues with it, and it doesn't even unlock NVFlash?! I'm used to Tegra based devices. I had a ViewSonic gTab before this. I've flashed and NVFlashed the hell out of that device so flashing itself doesn't make me uncomfortable, but the thing with that tab was as long as I could get APX, my ass was fine. I'm not so sure about the TF300t If the APK is the only way... sad panda.
2.) The APK voids the warranty right? Not a fan of that idea...what if I have a legit HW issue not caused by flashing? I'm screwed....damn. Is ANYONE working on a way to modify the bootloader without notifying ASUS? Hell, I'll even take some janky way of rerouting my IP traffic and sending back a false positive to unlock my tab.
I can't really think of a 3 right now. I had one earlier...I forgot. Normally I wouldn't post this since I know it's probably topics that have been covered, but there's SO MUCH info on this tablet and it seems to change with each release that ASUS puts out that I'm not sure which methods I can use and what exactly they will do. The gTab may have been stuck in Froyo, but the guys on TeamDRH are awesome and it was SOOOO easy to flash that thing 7 ways from Sunday. I'm really mad at ASUS's implementation....had I known that they screwed over the abilities to flash the tegra platform I'd have looked into a Sammy to at least match up better with my S3.
Any help or advice is appreciated. I'd really like to find a way to root/TWRP w/o voiding warranty. If it can't be done now does anyone at least know if it's being worked on by anyone?

For unlock your tablet, the only way is to use the UNLOCK TOOL V7
After, once your tablet unlocked without problem
You can just followed this guide : [ROOT/ROM] Root Stock/Deodex Firmware 10.4.2.20 (US/WW) | Insecure kernel !.
It's exactly for you.

And actually and for my part the most functional as recovery is TWRP, but if you want to use CWM, no problem for use it too
I've been searching on Google and these forums, but I want to get a final answer. Is it possible to downgrade to the less secure firmwares that are pre-9.4.5.30?
Also, does this unlock the bootloader, or am I misunderstanding what I'm reading?
I got my tablet yesterday and couldn't resist upgrading it despite knowing that often-times this causes a problem for customization. I now know I won't be able to get nvflash working on it, even if I unlock in the official way, but am I losing anything else ? I'm thinking about just returning this one and getting a new one that isn't upgraded, but I think I may just be stubborn and doing this on principle.

As far as I know, it is not possible to go under .30.
Hell, I 've even tried going back to .30 but my tablet for some reason even refuses that (which is not normal, I know )
Why would you like to do that anyway? For the NVFlash Tool? The tf700 is pretty brick proof so you're not really in danger
To be fully unlocked? To not worry about warranty claims? I dunno. I haven't tried going back to .30 yet, but if what you say is true and it doesn't always work to do that, then I can't get it unlocked at all, which I absolutely want to do as I like playing with different roms.
Note
Unlocking is still possible with JB firmwares, even though the Asus unlock tool download page says it's ICS only.
What the .30 firmware is required for, is rooting without unlocking, because it's the last firmware on which the debugfs exploit is available.
I myself downgraded for root last week-end, since I am unable to unlock for a different reason.
Oh, I'm rooted. I guess it just boils down to the feeling of freedom associated with a device unencumbered by arbitrary locks.

You can always unlock. Therefore, if you are planning to unlock+root, you can stay on JB.
As far as only rooting goes, you can usually always go back to ICS (I think may have a corrupt download, which prohibits me to downgrade)
I'll need to have a look into that, but you shouldn't worry about that.
As for the warranty: yes, I believe it contains full coverage. You should then be free to do whatever you want

Well - they technically void your warranty when you unlock. So no, not free to do whatever you want.
I believe SquareTrade will still cover physical damage, however if it is a software problem it will not be covered. Anything software related is not recovered, because before flashing I was gonna get one and anything software related will not be covered. So I turned down the getting the warranty because I take good care of my stuff. Usually .

Theres a couple ways safest i've found is normal download and update. As far as ota if your unlocked no luck there but you can download from asus website place on root of sd or internal storage and wait for triangle to come up in notification back like as if ota. I would go through each update starting from where you left of before flashing cm especially going to 10.4.2.20 to 10.6.1.8 as it uses 10.4.2.20 as base for update from there. Remember once on jb bootloader your stuck there cant downgrade back to ics and theres some major changes to 10.6.1.8 and would have to reroot once get there but with the changes becarful as to what recoveries and roms u use once on 4.2.1 u can only use roms based on that and have to use the twrp 2.4.4.0 patched recovery but there are also alot of unknowns as to asus' new update so caution read and ask before flashing because many are bricking with no fix except nvflash right now. So also i would do and nvflash back up as if something should go wrong its your best and only way outnonce on 10.6.1.8 but back up before going through all this because as of now nvflash isnt available for jb 4.2.1. Goodluck and becarful.
Heresna good thread to read and ask questions on how to go about getting to 10.6.1.8 aka 4.2.1 most of all read and ask before getting into a pickle.

Yea of course good catch. THANKS. Also in some cases may need to rename as in some times when get to 10.4.2.20 or 10.6.1.8 may have to rename. US_epad-user-10.6.1.8.zip of course not alway US could be WW for world wide or etc but as your updating may not always be the case just i've heard of some having to do this. This also works for downgrading and renaming your current firmware version as a previous version to do a reinstall had to do that once to fix a random reboot problem and works. I've heard of some downgrading as far as first jb build but thats as far as i've seen anyone can go.
Good luck as far as getting back to stock not totally sure you may know better than me or can ask some one on the thread i gave you i've never been rooted because affraid to void warranty just to safe but been doing alot of reading a research for when i decide to do so. Rooted like 10 of my passed other phones why not this one eventually just being safe from what i've seen happen to people with this new update.

I'll second this advice. I just upgraded my tablet from ICS yesterday, too, and this is exactly what I did. It worked great. I stopped at the last 4.1 update, though, because CM won't work on 4.2 yet.
And I second^2 the advice about setting up NVFlash before flashing the Jellybean update. I did that, too. Of course, I was doubly motivated by the fact that I had just recovered from a seven-month soft-brick (which was why I was still on ICS).
Anyway, good luck, and enjoy the Jellybean update.

The NVFlash thread links to a page at androidroot.mobi about the NVFlash release. That page links to a guide. At the bottom of the guide are two things you have to download (there are many links to downloads, but you only need the two that correspond to your OS and tablet). One is the NVFlash binary. You'll know because it only contains one file called NVFlash. The other includes the specific files for your tablet, including the bootloader.
So, just follow the guide on the AndroidRoot.mobi site, and you'll be fine.
Edit: Here's the guide I'm talking about: http://androidroot.mobi/t3_nvflash/
If you're using Windows, you may actually need to download three files, the third being the drivers.

In windows, the android SDK/Fasrboot are more clear to me, so I'll now just download the ROMs and files for later use. Thanks everyone
