Hi all,
I observed with other samsung device threads that users are concerned about what modem they're using, while all modems made for a device should work across all regions, does choosing a particular region modem have any significance at all?
Btw, I used Indian GB modem and later moved with European modems when ICS was released and using Indian ICS modem since yesterday, I couldn't notice difference glaringly across any version of android.
Also, My friend has an i9100g which gets -87dBm signal while I get only -105dBm with same operator(Airtel Chennai), these are best signal values at a particular location in home with both devices running their respective CM10.1 Builds.
Your technical inputs, views are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Buddy, I got - 97 and - 81 signal strength. So, it might b coz of signal strength.

Mine is -55 to -59 dBm 27 to 29 asu...Is that good? how do u measure? Lower the better or higher the better?

This is very good signal. My doubt is why two devices with same operator and at same location have different signal strength.

Any s/w tweaks to improve signal strength is available?
Had an average of -89dbm on cm10 but on gb its arnd -105 dbm..i guess its related to software..I'm really curious abt dis too

I have been using GB (Neo ROM) for past few days and I'm getting -55 to -59 dBM strength. The modem part of the ROM might have a slight say in this. But mostly it depends on the strength with which ur provider is broadcasting the signal, much like FM radio. Combined with that is the build quality of ur network chip. That can affect reception to some extent. I know there are build.prop tweaks for enhancing the download speeds over cellular networks but none for improved signal strength.
Thnx!
Most of those build.prop tweaks for network speed are actually about setting up the proper value. I have experience with some manufacturers who simply just copy values from other devices/AOSP generic even though their device is capable of having a higher speed. I have looked into this issue and it is set up properly in my CM builds.

Came across this build.prop tweak...claims to boost the signal.

ro.config.hw_fast_dormancy=1

It only does if the carrier supports it. If it doesn't, it eats battery if enabled.

Yep..Its supports only for carrier network with DTM (Dual Transfer Mode) support. I dont think any indian n/w providers has it (Particularly in chennai )

You can download and flash the latest EP1W modems here.
Also you can check out the 3g Turbocharger script here.
All the info you need is either in there or linked accordingly. Be sure to read everything in full.
You could always try flashing the Ep1w radio and see if that helps. I personally have not had any signal issues. At home I get full service while my gf sitting next to me has to contort herself in some pretty freakish fashions to get even one bar of service on her Dinc2. I would say the stock radios are pretty good on these phones.

That 3G turbocharger script will likely do nothing for the 1X/3G connection, and in reality, it does nothing for signal strength. It is meant for GSM networks, and can potentially improve you up/down data speed. The best you can hope for when using it is a faster 4G connection.
Hi
Just wanted to know.... since I am dropping calls so often, can that be ROM-related? Or does that have nothing to do with that?
Because if there is even a slight chance that it is ROM-related, than I will go back to STOCK
Running WeaponG2x right now

Doesn't this make you want to sell this phone and get a different one?
I found that cm7 based roms seemed to not switch towers as quickly as stock roms.might just be my device though. I get notably fewer dropped data connections on tsugi.

In my area tmobiles signal sucked. The best rom I found is eagles blood 2.4.I noticed when I tried weapons my wifi and data were very slow. Now I've unlocked my phone and using at&t go phone my signal has been great.I get 2 g but its faster than the tmobiles that I had.No more dropped calls either.

Me too.
Yes, but I broke my screen and have been too poor to fix it to resell. LoL
I have had the same experience so far.
I've not had any dropped calls on any roms I've tried. Currently on Tsugi and even wifi calling is working.
My signal everywhere but home is at least 3/4 bars and I always have 4g speeds >3mbps down.
I live in central Florida, Polk County.
The G2X just seems to be a little bit less robust in low signal situations.... so you will only have a problem in marginal areas usually...
Now I just discovered something odd with mine... If I set to WCDMA only, and force 4G signal, I don't seem to lose signal at all in my apartment. When I had it on WCDMA preferred, it would constantly switch between 4G and 2G modes, and I'd lose signal frequently, even if I was on a call... so it seems to me the problem may actually be in the switching between GSM and WCDMA.... Or just with GSM... need to do further experimentation.
I live in the middle of Orlando, so I really don't think that's considered a marginal area for a signal. Tmo said there was a tower not that far from my house too. I'll have to try the forcing it to 4g next time I am out and about and see how that works... Thanks for the suggestion lotherius.
I am currently using LC1. Seems to improve my wifi reception quite a bit. But cdma and 3g signal still sucks. So just a quick poll for everyone. Which radio to use on ICS, and dl links if you have them. Thanks!!!

Really which is best is very subjective. I have personally never seen a difference with any of them. Theoretically though, the latest one should be the best one. Here is the link to the thread in the development section.

Thanks for the reply. I have seen that thread and tried all except the KD8, I didn't notice a difference with any but LC1. My signal seemed the same but my speed tests were faster at home with the airave. Which I know runs the same 3g speed constantly. . . According to my other phones. The point of the post really was to see if anyone knew of a better radio. In their opinion besides the ones on that list. But I will update after I try the KD8.

No noticeable difference between the two.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA
Wifi speeds are not necessarily dependent on the used baseband firmware. Wifi speeds are influenced in fact much more by the used drivers (corresponding shared objects with "so" extension and library files) and its bugs. These drivers are located on the system partition. Official binary blobs containing wifi drivers can be downloaded. The official ROM uses binary blobs (proprietary SW) for wifi operation. Though some custom ROMs may contain open source drivers.

There aren't different radios than those. If you see a different radio not in that list, you should probably not flash it if they're claiming it's for our phone. Obviously a new radio could come out again and there could technically be some radio that never went official but if those make it into the public, the thread would likely be updated and have them.

Whats the best Kernel to use with the i727UVLE1 radio? Im on stock 4.0.4. Using T Mobile on my Unlocked Skyrocket. Im trying to get better signal bars. Mine is 1 to zero most of the time.
Just wondering...does different ROMS help increase the bars? If so...whats the best combination that somehone has while having 3 or more bars of signal constantly.
By the way..mine is showing 3.0.8 in the about phone.
Kernels and roms don't increase signal strength that has has to do with the radio.

Man...what can i do to increase my signal bar if you know? I see the 4G...but 1 or zero bars. I did a reformat 2 hours ago thru odin. It had the wrong radio because i had no 4G or edge...BUT...the signal bar was all the way FULL. In my room..where its never full. That makes me thing my room IS capable of getting the signal. But what can i do...tweak wise...to get the bars high?

I tried the Blaze...which people say is the best. Gave me 4G...but 1 bar of signal. Then now i have the i727UVLE1....4G...but 1..maybe sometimes 2 to zero bars of signal. I mean...there has to be some tweaks that i dont know about. In the settings or anything. Ive only tried those 2. I see a KiD radio....same base..T989...isnt it all the same...just different people uploading em?

I'm not sure if they're different. The area youre in may not have great coverage. Ummmm you could try some other T-Mobile apns if there are any. Not sure since I don't use mine with tmo.

It has to have good coverage. When i put this sim card into my old Slide phone right now...i get 4 or 5 bars. With a 3G symbol. Also...when i factory reset my skyrocket a few hours ago...all my bars were FULL. I mean perfect...but no 4G. Because the radio was wrong. So when i put the radio i had in it before....4G came back...but so did the suck signal with 1 bar. So i know this area CAN get good signal. I need to know what some people on here are doing to get it. What combinations to use and stuff. Im on stock 4.0.4.
Can this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763195
[ROM]SKY-ICS 4.2F6-2.5 (8/2) (UCLF6 Base) AT&T-OFFICIAL ICS.PROJ MARGARINE, W/ G-NOW be used on my skyrocket unlocked to T mobile? Or is this radio in here NOT for T Mobile?
[Edit] See,,right now this second...i just installed the 4.0.4 tar again from odin. It has 5 strong bars of signal right now. But no 4G. meaning the radio in there is wrong. Its showing i727UCLF6. Which is (I think) the AT &T radio. I have a T Mobile sim in it unlocked with TMO. Any radio i add from here...will make my signal go down to 1 bar. BUT...it has 5 strong bars now. Man..wish there was a way to keep those bars.
Sounds like you're in a good 3G area...but only borderline 4G area.
I travel constantly & have encountered this many times.
So..shouldnt i at least have bars with a H or something? Bars are 1 or none. Weird. I flashed thru odin 1 hour ago. Got done...5 bars strong. Filled. But no 4G or data. Had put in the right radio. When i did....4G and data came back...bars gone.

Can you share what rom and kernel you are also using.
I experience the same issues as DJR0D. The blaze radio gets me worse signal, I lose about 4 bars. This was with sky ics and stock kernel.
Right now I am back to the att modem since I need good call quality. It might be a placebo, but I think the calls sound worse with the blaze modem.
No one can help you pick a modem. Its relative to area and device. Flash compatible modems until you get the "best" one for you. Locked
hello
I set up my unlocked i727r to work with mobilicity, however, it has very crappy reception. I tried the t989 KID modem, the vk1, the telus kj3, and the blaze modems. They all give me weak signal (anywhere between 0-2 bars with mobilicity), whereas my galaxy nexus has 3 bars. It tends to lose connection when I go inside a supermarket, and sometimes disconnects from the network and doesnt want to reconnect. I have the gingerbread, and I want to keep it. So, is anyone using this phone with mobilicity and getting a good signal strength? Do you mind sharing with me what you did?
thanks
Bars aren't really a good indication of signal.

yea what i meant to say is that its very unstable, it would take a long time to dial a number, it has crappy reception, etc. Right now my phone is connected to the mobilicity network, but under mobile network state in status, it says disconnected. What could be the cause of that?

I'm more or less in the same boat... in particular upload rate is horrible ~40kbps.
OP: any progress in your experience with mobilicity and in your search of a suitable modem?
It's the network not the phone. I was with them & got the same results with a Lumia 710 & the 727r. I tried all the different modems & the best is the Blaze 4G IMO.
Did you guys also have to change your kernels to get it to work?
I have tried the usual 4 radios combined with SKYICS and also with the stock OS (latest Rogers version) without much success.
I get some signal but as soon as I try to call the phone would hang on me (it would dial out incidentally).
Thanks a lot
Nope didn't have to do anything other then flash the recovery, to allow me to flash the radios from zip files. The Rom and kernel were stock GB or ICS. I did go into *#2263# and set WCDMA option from all to 1700, & the mobile network option from automatic to manual selecting Mobilicity or its network ID #.
Actually a couple of weeks ago I flashed the t989 juggernaut rom, with the faux kernel and vkl1 radio and its somewhat better.
