looking for my first android.. - General Questions and Answers

Im looking to get a new phone(gsm) off contract. Ive been looking at the nexus4 and the galaxy nexus both are the same price new but we all know you cant touch a nexus4 right now. I kinda want the galaxy nexus because at&t is putting lte in my town since Sandy tore up most of their network. What other phones are around the 300-400 range that are worth buying? I have a iPhone 4s right now.

the answers you may get are going to be pretty biased Just watch youtube 'versus' videos

It really depends on how badly you want LTE. The GNex is still a great phone and I'm keeping mine until there's a Nexus more compelling than the Nexus 4.

Galaxy S3 is nice too if you can get it off contract. Like others have said, it comes down to preference.

GS3 of course, but will be way too expensive without a contract.
N4 is a great 1st android.

Having owned both Nexus devices (currently own Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7) as well as HTC Android phones (Hero, EVO 3D), I must recommend the Nexus devices. The vanilla experience simply can not be beat.
The Nexus 4 looks like a great choice.

I highly recommend a prepaid smartphone like one of the Huawei phones the ascend 2 and the ascend m865c both have root and have really nice Roms to go with them. They are very inexpensive to own the phone. It is around 100 dollars for the phone and for 45 dollars a month you can get unlimited data text and phone. With root and mod there are extra perks as well as saving money through Other entities of the device .

[Q] Complete speculation: will Nexus Prime be more expensive than iPhone 4S?

Hi,
We have Sprint as our carrier. I want the Nexus Prime and another family member on the same plan really wants the iPhone 4S for herself, but only one of us is due for an upgrade. So, we will have to buy one through the upgrade pricing and pay the full price for the other. Any guesses as to which one might be cheaper and should be purchased vs. bought through upgrade pricing?
From what I understand, it's unlikely that the Nexus Prime will be on Sprint. Verizon is what I keep hearing.
Seriously? Now you are making me just sad :'(
The nexus prime will be on all carriers if anything. There is also speculation that the Verizon version will not be nexus and have touchwiz. More like the GSII HD LTE that was released in Korea. My guess is the iPhone will be more expensive off contract than the nexus.

World phone?
By the way, have there been any rumors about it being a world phone? Or based on the current rumors it will be tech specific (CDMA, GSM)...?
Why guess when chances are you'll know for sure a week from now? >.>
Wasn't the 4s announced that it would be a world phone (cdma with sim card)? As far as pricing, idk off the bat but iPhones never drop its full retail value until the next model is announced. Nexus on the other hand, can be found at different sites for different deals as time goes on.
Besides, iPhones hold value better than other phones when sold on Craigslist, so that may be an option as well when the nexus is released.

Android OS is free so there is obvious price cut, it will be cheaper than iPhone 4S
Nexus S
Pretty sure the iphone 4s will be more expensive.
The reason ?
They can, and everybody will be buying one anyways, without regard to what they actually need.
meh.

Huh? The nexus phones are 499 off contract and some android Phones even hit 7 or 800. This logic is completely flawed.

Funny what i heard is Verizon might have a slight exclusive with the release of this phone but theirs might not be a real nexus phone.
Why not let her use the upgrade you convince her to give you her old phone"hopefully its something will some resell" then pick up the nexus prime off contract then sell both phones. Or just trade them both in to sprint and buy from them off contract(not sure if they still buy back phones) sprint price will be cheaper than best buys for sure
Of course the iPhone 4S will be more expensive. The iPhone has always been the most expensive phone on the market and the most overpriced, IMHO.
Still, it will most likely outsell the Nexus Prime

Need Answers ASAP! Dell Streak To Galaxy S II?

Hi!
I am going to switch to sprint from AT&T because I lost my job. I am going to get onto my mother-in- law’s plan because my wife is already on it. They have a family plan so I was just going to jump onto their plan to save money.
The only problem is that I have a Dell Streak and am so in love with it. I have the awesome stock unlocked factory ROM on it and can tether with an unlimited data plan. It’s a great phone but does seem a little out dated by being a little slow. Also I am tired of paying 85.00 a month for unlimited mobile to mobile, unlimited data, and unlimited testing. I know it’s a decent deal but money is tight at the moment.
The only solution so far is to go to sprint because that is what my wife and mother-in-law are have. The only close phone that sprint has that is close to what I have is the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G. The phone would be 19.95 a month and 10.00 a month for the data for that phone. I am wondering if there is a huge ROM support group for the Galaxy S II if I wanted to say put Ice Cream Sandwich on it stock style with unlock tethering with the sprint network. I know some networks make it real hard to change your ROM’s phone.
The other choice would be just to go with the Samsung Replenish because it seems like a decent phone and has Android capabilities but I just think I would find myself depressed going from an extreme mod phone like the Dell Streak to the Samsung Replenish.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Let me know the ins and outs of moding a Galaxy S II on the Sprint network. And what phone you think would be best. You think the extra 10.00 is worth the Galaxy S II? I just think I will be going for the Galaxy S II because that is what I am used to.
Side note is that I am 8 months from my contract expiring with AT&T and have unlimited data smartphone plan. I was thinking about using an extra lame old phone that I have laying around the house and taking of my data plan by calling in and say I do not have it any more I just have a basic phone and ask them to remove my data plan. This was when I port my number over to Sprint they will only charge me the basic termination fee than the more expensive one because I had a smartphone. Do you think this would work?
Best,
needspractice
Bump!
Bump!
I'm think I just saw this on the Streak area. Galaxy SII development is a million times more active than the Streaks, there are hundreds of modded Sammy, ASOP and AKOP roms, the devs are incredible. I could never go back to my streak from my S2

How do you know if you get that model? check the back of it? do you get that one at the Sprint store?
I have not bought one yet. I could call and ask or go by there and ask to see the one in the box before I get it.
Also do you think its a big deal to give up my unlimited data plan on AT&T?
Are the brand new ones in the stores today the GT-19100 model? Also are the white ones GT-19100?
I called the store and they say its the D710? Is that an entirely different model?
Thats the unlocked version and is not compatible with Sprint!
Im going for the Galaxy S III!

I was wondering if anyone knew of the latest or best phone that has the greatest ROM rooting following at the moment greater than the Galaxy Nexus?
I have a Galaxy Nexus right now and its great but I am just bored with it. I would like to upgrade. The only problem is that I use [GNEX TOOLKIT V11.1.0] Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, Recovery, Flash + MORE [SPRINT] which is the best tool around.
I was wondering if there are tools like this or better for other newer phones that I may upgrade to or should I just stay with my Nexus for while?

Switching from iPhone to Android

Hey,
Im currently an iPhone user (4S 64GB factory unlocked) and want to switch to android.
Im in a contract with telus that ends in september and am thinking of renewing it. The phones they carry that interest me are the One X and the S2 X, unfortunately they dont have the galaxy nxs anymore. Otherwise i could switch to a provider that carries the nexus.
I want a phone with a good development which still has newer components. I'm not a fan of the s3. And I like good build quality!
Opinions?
I would just get a GSM Nexus. They are so damn cheap anyway.

Nexus
I would take the Nexus. There you have the latest Android updates and a big screen
the One X is a great phone, I highly recommend it
Welcome to the light.. I also left the Iphone and its the best decision I've made. I would also recommend the GSM Nexus! We have 2 in the family and they love it.
Android really rules!

Sell your 4S for a nice chunk of change. Then buy a Galaxy Nexus which is $350, and pocket the rest of the money.

definitely nexus bro! my friend use it and the ROM update is a lot faster than S3.
I've written extensively on why you shouldn't sign a contract in general, or choose your phone based on your provider.

The price differential over 24 months adds up.
For example, T-mobile has a $30 100 minute 5 gig prepaid, and Straight Talk has a $45 unlimited prepaid; there are others to shop around for, but those are the most commonly cited. Assuming you even get the cheapest Verizon plan, $40 (450 minutes talk) + $10 (1000 smses) + $30 (2 gb data) = $80 (per month)
Verizon's $80/month is already $35/month more than ST. That means you save $840 over 24 months by going even the more expensive prepaid. (Compared to this, the puny $200 subsidy is nothing.)
For the t-mobile plan, the differential is a whopping $50, and you save, holy hell, $1200 over 24 months.
In other words, the subsidy is just a psychological scam make you think you've got a discount, when really, the higher prices per month make all the difference.

Buying a phone outright gets you more flexibility and, if you go with prepaid, lower costs overall. As you said, you have to wait > 18 months to get a new one under your plan [and you'd have lost out, with your increased rates, if you don't]. I can get my next phone anytime [and am subject to low rates all the time]. My nexus, for example, is definitely good for this year, but I don't want to count on my prophetical powers for anything longer. If it gets broken, or just plain outclassed, I want to be able to grab the newest thing on the market right away.

However, you will probably have to do the prepaid research yourself, since all the current research seems to be for the US. (In particular, you should calculate that my conclusions above are still valid for your options.) The lack of a $350 Nexus in Canada also sucks; I think you can get it for around $400.
You can pick up the galaxy nexus at best buy or future shop with telus no problem

Good call on switching from the dark side!
I would either go with the Nexus or the One X. I've used both phones briefly, and they are both quick and solid. If I had to choose one of them, I'd go with the Nexus... it IS Google's baby after all.
HTC One X
Superb Phone really enjoying it!
I'd reconsider the S3. Exchangeable battery (you'd be surprised how important this could be, especially if you are switching from Apple) plus microSD (ditto). If you are all over the phone shell material, go for the One Z.
Good Choice

Android is better in almost all categories except screen res and camera quality
I own both the iPhone and some Android devices, mostly Samsungs and I wouldn't say that any of the them is better than the other. They are just different, both have good and bad sides. I am definitely having more fun modifying and hacking Androids while I prefer iPhone for everyday calling. What I really dislike is bias in any direction. It doesn't matter though since you've already made a decision. Then in your place I would get a Nexus. It's solid, looks good and gets the most frequent updates.

Should I get a Nexus 4 or Galaxy S3?

I have an oppurtunity to get the Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile for free (on two year contract), but the Nexus 4 isn't in stock and will cost me $200 on a two year contract. It's a hard decision for me, since the Nexus 4 is quad core and a Nexus phone. On the other hand, the S3 has expandable memory, costs me less money, and I can get it now, rather than wait for Nexus 4 to come back to stock.
I know I'll get updates slower on the S3, but I plan on installing a custom rom (Cyanogenmod or AOKP) and I believe the S3 on T-Mobile has a good developer community.
What should I do?
I'm currently using an OG Droid on Verizon.
Verizon is getting way too expensive and I figured I can save lots on T-Mobile.
Thanks

The S3 is clearly a better deal here. If you were going for the Nexus, it'd be better to buy it unlocked from Google (no contract).

[Q] need new phone

I am in need of a new phone, without resigning. I'm just going to continue with my plan off contract or switch to monthly 4g maybe. I'm on T-mobile and am coming from and Optimus T. What is good out there that is around $200? I've been lusting over the SGS2 but its over my budget everywhere I have found one Thinking the Sensation or the Optimus L9. I will root it for sure and maybe rom if needed.I heard T-mobile say the iPhone will be available in a few months, probably the iPhone 5 which is just fine by me. That's kinda what I'm waiting for unless I find a sweet droid. I do know and want the Nexus 4 but 350 is certainly too high for me right now. like I said, I'm on a budget.
Anyway, I appreciate any input.
Thanks

If ur looking for new off contract then the nexus 4 is a good deal. how many new high end phones can u find for 350 no contract? But if ur on a budget life u said then used phone may have to be the way
You should be able to find a used S2 in decent condition for around $200 on eBay. Not sure what the Galaxy Nexus is going for now, the N4 is scarce so it might still be over $200.
I think the S2 used is your best bet.
You can get an iPhone 4 for around $200, too. The iPhone 5 is like.... Way more than $200. Are you saying you're willing to sign a contract again for it or what?

no contract. my goal is to go to a carrier with an iPhone after the next one is announced. Don't want to be locked in then see the new one and not get it on my carrier. I would get nexus 4 but its sold out all the time and just over my budget. I keep trying ebay for the sgs2 but I end up over 250 and that's too high for me. I'm really trying to take my time but am starting to get impatient.
