[Q] Custom OS screen and complete factory reset - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. Read a whole bunch of threads, but can't seem to find the exact answer I am looking for. I'll describe very briefly my issue and my concerns.
Issue: The very first time I booted my Galaxy Tab 2 - 7", it went into the custom OS downloading screen (i.e. same as Volume down + Power - "do not turn off target!!" screen). But, I did NOT hold down the volume down button when I pressed the power button - so why it went to that screen concerns me. Essentially, I am concerned that someone may have messed with the device before I bought it.
Info on screen: "ODIN MODE, Product Name = GT-P3113, Custom Binary Download: NO, Current binary: SAMSUNG_OFFICIAL"
Questions:
1) Could booting into that screen (I didn't hold down volume) be caused by some tampering on the device?
2) I "wipe data / factory reset" the device a couple of times - but I am presuming this does NOT restore the kernel/OS - and just wipes the user data?
3) I saw in some threads that Odin itself can be flashed - e.g. the "unrooting" process requires you to download some "Odin 1.85" or something rather. If rooting was done, is there any way of finding out whether it was done? I saw that the rooting counter can be reset too now.
4) ASSUMING, the device is compromised, is there a way to completely factory reset everything (including Odin, Kernel, etc.) to the Samsung factory binaries without having to download binaries from the internet?
Thanks.

Its possible but could have just been an anomaly

correct it will just wipe data bringing the unit back to factory stock...

If the counter was reset i dont think you could find out and it looks as if everything is already back to bone stock so I wouldnt worry about it

It seems like you are already factory stock so why would you try messing with it?

[Q] [Help] Stuck in boot on Google

Alright. This is a 100% stock Nexus S- nothing "development" wise was done to the device, no system tools installed that could cause issues, basically nothing but basic apps loaded on the device.
It just started today. I was working on my bf's Vibrant (another, more successful story) and grabbed my Nexus and hit the power button and it did not turn the screen back on. Holding the power button down did not reboot the device, and none of the buttons would light up or function.
So, I pulled the battery. Now every time I try to boot, it hits the "Google" screen and stays put. I left it alone for 5 minuets hoping it would finish booting and nothing. The soft buttons will light up, and if I touch them they register the touch but it does not help the phone to boot.
I do know that the phone was basically dead right before this happened, and at first I thought it was just dead. However, its been on the charger for at least 30 minuets- which should have given it enough of a charge to boot up, and still nothing.
What could cause this issue?
I did install a couple of new applications today, and I know the market updated a bunch of them but they're all apps that I've had on several phones (minus the two new ones today) and have never had an issue with any of them. The two new ones I downloaded were OS Monitor, and a 2G/3G toggle for hopes of improving some battery life.
But those are the only two things I've done differently. I've only been using the phone for a week but I haven't had any problems at all, before this.
Now- if worst comes to worst I can seem to get into the bootloader, and through that, stock recovery. So I can try to do a factory reset and wipe cache but without a backup I really kinda hope thats a last resort.
Please help, and let me know if you need any more information.
Thank you!
I understand that you're fully stock which I assume means you have a locked bootloader (everything I say from here on out assumes as such)? First, I'm going to also assume that you didn't update to 2.3.3? If not, then follow the steps in this guide to boot into a custom recovery and from there go to backup and restore and do a NANDroid backup. Now go to mounts and storage and mount USB storage (or whatever its called, don't have my phone right here). Plug your phone into your comp and copy over whatever you'd rather not lose from your SDcard (just in case you have to wipe). Now download the 2.3.3 update from here and put it on the root of your SD card. Now go back and flash this. Reboot and see if you're golden. If so, great, if not try a factory reset.
If that doesn't work go through the steps again to boot into a custom recovery, you might have to unlock your bootloader and wipe all your data (again) and restore your backup and try doing a factory reset with that. Don't worry about unlocking the bootloader, it can be relocked with a simple command and it won't wipe anything to relock it.
Here is the command just in case:
Code:
fasboot oem lock
I got all the way to having clockwork recovery booted up on the phone, but nothing would mount. Everything gave me an error, and factory reset froze...
I don't think there is anything I can even do from here, is there?

[Q] Factory reset & wiped P3113, won't boot

I was having a problem where my storage was disappearing and I couldn't find the cause. I did a "power button/volume down" boot, only to get stuck on the Samsung logo splash screen long enough to use up over half the battery power. Following advice I found elsewhere on this site, I did a power button/volume up boot, then chose "factory reset/data wipe" from the menu.
Following directions, I pressed the power button when that was done, only to be stuck on the Samsung splash screen again. Can anyone tell me how to get this thing so I can use it again?
Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch screen
originally Android 4.2.2
NOT rooted but probably will be if I can ever use it again

Do you have the stock recovery on it still? If not, just wipe everything and flash a new ROM in recovery.
If yes, then I'd say use Odin to flash back to stock and start over. You've already wiped your user data so you'd have nothing to lose by restoring to stock.
It's super easy using Odin. You'll just need to find a download of the stock.tar to put into Odin to flash. I'm sure there is one around here somewhere.
better but maybe not good
Apparently it was just taking its sweet time. About 20 minutes after I posted, I was at the "device ready for use" screen. Any idea what could cause over 3gb of storage to dwindle away to nothing?
I bought the tablet in September 2012 and had no storage issues fron then until about two weeks ago, and I was constantly adding and deleting programs without issue. After a week of low-storage warnings I did a factory reset from within settings, which gave me 3.4GB of space after Google restored all my apps. That was only this past SUNDAY. What eats up gigabytes of storage in four days without any assistance from me? I intend to root this thing but I need to know just what to be on the lookout for. I had McAfee AV Mobile on it, and that found no issues (must reinstall pronto).
Any guidance anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. I want to restore my apps but one of them could be the culprit...

Kyocera Rise soft bricked. Suggestions?

Hello everyone. I am an old member, seeing as I registered almost four years ago, but I guess either your database was refreshed and it lost my username, or I only lurked. So, as the title suggests I have one of those lowly, inexpensive, down right cheap Kyocera phones. Here is what I have figured out so far. I was able to root it using Kingroot. That went splendidly, though because of my over adventurousness I decided to swap some apps out. I added a new launcher to the /system/app folder and wanted to upgrade the com.android.settings.apk with one from a newer build. This phone (was) running Android 4.0.4 Kyocera release r77 build date 2013. Apparently Kyocera loves to lock the bootloader so if I was able to spin a custom system rom I wouldn't be able to flash it. Another thing which discovered was upon boot up the system checks the integrity of app the system apps. If one of them fails the check it will not boot the system fully. I was able to recover the stock boot/recovery/system roms from a thread on here, but I seem to be stuck in a soft brick loop. One thing that another thread said, the thread that had the rom images, it said that you could used ADB to flash the roms to the phone. Thing is, when I boot the phone it restarts, and if I put it into recovery mode (press and hold volume down plus power for ten to fifteen seconds) the only options I have are "reboot system now", "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition." There is no "flash update from sd card" or wipe dalvik cache option. As I have said before, I could try to flash the rom to it using adb but I believe that wiping the system partition unset the USB debugging setting. When I connect it to my computer windows device manager notices the kyocera removable device for a second then as the phone reboots it goes away. Setting it into recovery mode does not make it show up in windows. Is there any way I can flash the stock rom onto it? Any android sdk or adb trick I can use that can boot it into some recovery mode? I was trying to see if I can get it to boot into download mode but seeing as it has soft keys and not a physical home button I do not know if I can manage that. I was thinking that maybe they tied one of the physical keyboard buttons to the home button but I have yet to uncover that one. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and thank you for using XDA Assist
If you can access your recovery it is already a good thing, try first to wipe data and see how it goes.

So, I boot into recovery and I do the wipe data/factory reset then the wipe cache partition for good measure and it still halts on boot. Same thing. Boot, kyocera logo, virgin mobile boot splash, then it halts where it would normally go into android. Then it reboots. Rinse repeat.
Any suggestions? I sorta need the information off the phone.

Will I lose software update after a hard reset?

I am 100% certain that this question has been asked already, but a search mostly shows people asking about what happens when they do a factory reset, or even when they say "hard reset", they appear to have in mind the "soft" factory reset instead.
My question is as the subject says. If I do a hard reset, the one performed from the android boot menu or whatever you call it, will I lose my software update? I am NOT talking about the factory reset that is performed from within the settings menu of the device.
Just as a background, I have a Nexus 7 (2012, first generation) that simply does not recognize usb cable while it's turned on. While the tablet is turned on, it does not charge and it won't be recognized when plugged into the computer. It charges only if it's turned off. I searched and did everything suggested, using the original cable, original charger, different cable, different charger, cleaning the usb connector with 99% isopropyl alcohol, try bending the connector slightly, software update, factory reset, installing some apps suggested from google play store and running diagnostics, everything. I have to think that this is probably a software issue, not a hardware issue. I mean, obviously it does charge when it's off, so I just can't think something is catastrophically wrong with the hardware (and I have experience fixing wonky touchscreen on this device by updating software). Unfortunately, rooting the device and installing custom rom is not an option until the usb works, which is the whole issue that I am trying to solve (I saw some discussions on the web about rooting without usb, but I think that's beyond my ability).
Anyway, back to the point, as one of the last resorts, I am wondering if a hard reset might give me some light, but before I attempt that, would like to know if that means I need to update software again. Yes, I already know I will lose all my files, data, apps, contacts, app save files or progress, account info, everything.
Thank you for your help.
There is no difference between hard reset and factory reset. Factory reset or hard reset just removes your all system apps data, user apps and data. It only reset settings to default as a fresh os.
By factory resetting it not change your updated os to older one. It just reset your android update to factory settings.
If it helped . Please thank me.

So are the discussions at the following link incorrect? Please Google "how to hard reset nexus 7 2012" and click the top hit that shows, by the title "Hard Reset your Google Nexus 7 (2012) – Android Forum - AndroidPIT" (I am a new user to these forums and am prevented from posting an external link).
I was thinking of trying the second method explained in that article,
- Turn your tablet off.
- With the tablet off, press and hold the Power key, then press and hold the Volume Down key. Scroll down twice to select Recovery.
- Select with the power key.
- You'll see the Android pop up, then while holding down Power, press Volume Up.
- Use the volume keys to scroll to "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" and press Power to select it.
- Scroll down to "Yes - Erase All User Data" and press Power to select it.
- Your Hard Reset is now complete.

Ashwinrg, could you please reconcile your post with the above article that I am referencing, which suggests that a "factory reset" is different from a "hard reset"? Am I reading something wrong, or is that article plain wrong? (And yes, even the steps for a "hard reset" references "Wipe Data/Factory Reset", so there is definitely some confusing terminology, even at the manufacturer level, going on here, but my point is, is there just one kind of "reset" for Android, or are there more than one kind of "resets" out there for Androids?)
You can see the steps given on the site is saying that go to recovery mode and select wipe data/factory reset.
Factory reset and hard reset is same. It just reset os to factory settings.

Thanks. So to see if I understand it right, if I've already tried factory reset from android settings menu, trying the method with power button and volume button and recovery mode and so on is going to be redundant, and in any case definitely won't have any impact on my usb/battery issue, if the factory reset didn't help?
Yes there might be the case you can loose your data or some software if you will hard reset.
You can factory reset your android in android settings menu or from recovery mode.

[PDP] setup fail making it difficult to hard reset my Samsung phone

So recently I tried completely wiping my cache from the recovery mode, but when I restarted the phone and held the power and volume up buttons, instead of entering recovery mode the phone just vibrated and booted normally. It then showed this message.
[PDP] Back-up : fail setup-wizard [ FINISH ]
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this ? I've already tried several times.

i think if you need a rooted phone just install lineageos is much faster and debloated than stock, i change my stock today to lineage and is amazing
when you change to lineageos install auroraoss store amazing app like google store
you can root lineageos so easy in recovery twrp install magisk zip thats all no problems at all
IF you want more options to play jest follow these post

That message what you have i magisk recovery script.
Magisk is installed on recovery partition and when you hold that button when phone power on magisk installing to the phone thats why vibrate
If you wanna go to recovery mode just hold same button combo before phone start logo shows and keep long as possible and you must have connected usb cable to the pc if you press button combo when logo is already on the phone then magisk start installing and thats why its vibrate
When you will hard reset i think you gonna lose magisk and root.
That message what you have should say "backup success" i think magisk is broken and for me is not working too

Do you fix this?
I have had that same issue. Unfortunately my partner's phone had a keylock on ii so these are the problems I had to face.
Draw the pattern several times but it never gave me the option to 'use a google account' so it carried on until I had to wait 65 minutes before drawing another pattern. Still no google account option.
I'd swipe down, select the wifi to get it to connect and it wouldn't let me look for my wifi to put a code in.
After a search, it gave me some software that I can download off Tenorshare so I downloaded it and tried which put me to the next problem, I couldn't get into the root menu to factory reset the phone and the phone wouldn't allow me to get into the diagnostic screen when I type on the *#09#*, I think the code is but you can get in via clicking the emergency call option. I'd volume up and power, it buzzed twice and still continued to the main samsung screen. The software from Tenorshare couldn't do much with it ie remove the google account but here's what else I did. I remembered that I used to upgrade firmware on samsung mobile phones via this website so I downloaded the Odin software, found the correct firmware from sammobile.com and that came up with something surprising. As much as I couldn't get into the root menu, I just believe that it's missing or corrupted,
so I connected the phone to the PC using the USB,
fired up Odin, Odin didn't show anything in the log but it after restarting the phone and pressing volume up and power, it buzzed twice and it went into a blue download screen and sat there. I thought, heyyyy this screen is usable.
The download for the firmware was complete and I unzipped it to it's 5 components, USERDATA, BL, AL and two others,
I had put the seperate files into the Odin software and clicked the start button. It uploaded the firmware successfully and restarted the phone so I did the volume up and power (I think I did it or the phone went into the root menu itself).
From there, I factory reset the phone, rebooted and it still asked for the draw pattern but I could set up the wifi, so since I was doing this late, I couldn't be bothered to phone the partner up to get all the email, questions etc.
So I rebooted the phone, went into the root and cleared the cache; this didn't really help at all because the draw pattern came up and when I used my gmail account; the phone wouldn't change the owner.
So I went back to the Tenorshare software and used the google account removal option and that worked;
The is completely clean and I can give it back to her, I did some google updates, galaxy store updates and it works fine. So just need to give it back.
