[Q] How to get rid of Gmail and install Google mail - General Questions and Answers

Hello experts!
I'm running AOSP JELLY BEAN 4.2.1_r1 on my first generation Kindle Fire, it's working like a charm, except for this:
For some reason it did not come with stock email app, I installed Gmail from the market, never used it before, so I didn't know it doesn't support mail accounts other than gmail ones.
Now I would like to get rid of the Gmail app but I can't uninstall it, I really like the Google mail's Interface, and also the possibility of unifying all my mail accounts.
I try to install Google mail, but I get "application not installed"
Is it there a way to accomplish this?
Help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
A happy and prosperous new year to all!

Here is the Email app straight from the Cm10.1/sgt7 system app folder. I don't know if it'll install just by tapping the apk......might have to put it in system/app and set permissions. Hope it helps

Worked perfectly. Thanks a million!
Now, what can I do in order to make the Gmail app disappear? Uninstall is grayed, Delete account is not available. Should I just delete the app from the system/app folder? Is it safe to do just that?
Thanks in advance.

[Q] Question about Rebel Rom

I just flashed Rebel rom and its amazing. But I just hate the sony launcher. so, can I just download the blur home from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23730009&posted=1#post23730009 and just throw it in system/app to get the moto home back?
I havent tried it but you can always try making a nandroid backup and flashing the CWM on boot just in case you get in a bootloop and that way you can go restore just your system....make sure you set permissions to rw and I recommend root explorer vs es explorer.

Just do not delete the Ericson home unless the moto blur home does work. Let me kniw asap if it does work. I dont think youll have many issues but then again im not a dev so proceed with caution.

I'm iffy on whether or not to do it or not without a devs approval. And I am far too lazy at the moment to flash CWM on boot. (I am typing this in between BFBC2 games) so I may do that later or not. I just want to see if I have approval to move it from my root to system/app
Ok, I just copied my blurhome.apk to system/app and nothing happened. I then went to settings>apps>all apps>and cleared the default on my launcher, hit my home button, choose home and everything worked flawlessly.....
It even has the ics launcher icons.....
Edit: Rebooted the phone and everything seems slick and smooth with motohome ics themed on rebel ROM beta 2....

You might have to download something called moto home home fixer off the market to actually set it as your default.

Alright, I don't think I'm doing something right. Did you push it to system/app with adb or did you just place the apk right in the folder with root explorer? If you did the latter, how do you install it or whatever?

"What is VM?"
VM is the ability to listen to messages approximately 10-15 seconds faster than using traditional VM. This results is savings me about 2-5 minutes per month which makes it worth while to pay the $2.99 fee for the Verizon service
EDIT:
From the looks of the file, it appears to be an APK. Any reason why you renamed it as a zip? -Also the APK failed to install. Any idea why? I tried zipaligning again just in case, but it wouldn't zipalign.
hmmm
not sure why that happened
rename it to .apk
then
Use a file explorer with root access and drop it in /system/app/, set perms to rw-r--r-- and reboot

by copying it to system/app and changing permissions it IS installed

Side load APK without it showing in Play Store

Hi all
I want to side load an app which I have the APK for but don't then want it to show as installed on the Play store.
At the moment I have extracted the APK file using ES File Explorer then uninstalled it from the device. I then side load through a file explorer.
But it pops back up in the play store as installed on device.
Any help welcome

Not rooted and the phone I want to do this on won't be rooted so kind of rules it out.
I have just tried downloading a file from the Amazon app store and repeating the process and when I install that APK it does not show on installed apps. If you search for the app in the Play store it shows as installed however.
I can kind of live with that but otherwise ideas welcome

can you be more clear on what you are trying to achieve ?
if you install any app using apk directly then open that app in playstore then yes it does show up as installed but if you see in the list of my apps(press options in playstore and it will be the first option) then it wont be listed ..
Does it have to be sideloaded? If not, create a secondary google account, install it via that account, then remove the account. Another option would be to decompile the apk and alter the androidmanifest.xml to make it incompatible with your phone. Not that straightforward, though...

[APP][MOD] Google Maps v6.14.3 Background GPS lock

Ever use Google maps to navigate? Then receive an important text message, or feel like switching pandora tracks? THen go back to Google Maps only to see you have missed your exit/turn because your GPS was reallocating and getting a lock?
Well i have xD
So I modded it.
Here is what it does,
Once you launch Google Maps, it will lock on your location. Now, if you click a notification, or press the HOME button, you will STILL have a GPS lock. No matter what app you are in, as long as Google Maps is a background process, it will always have your lock.
Now, what if you got to where you are going and want to leave google maps? Just press the BACK button all the way until Google Maps exits, and so will the GPS lock. Simply ey?
To install:
Download attached apk. Get it onto your device, remove all other versions of Google Maps (Whether system or play store installed) then using a file manager, browse to the downloaded apk, and click it to install. Then enjoy
Hope you like it and get as much use out of it as i do! Be sure to hit thanks or better yet donate! I LOVE FOOD!

Try downloading to a desktop, then attaching the APK to a Gmail which you have addressed to yourself. Uninstall your current version of Maps, then open the e-mail you have sent to yourself, and click the attachment. It will download and install, no need for using a file manager. I usually just find this easier, because it is quicker for me than to pull up the directory in File Manager, find the file, install......just a suggestion. That is my super lazy way when I do not feel like enabling Bluetooth or using a USB, plus the added bonus of having a copy of the APK to hand anytime you need it.

I've had that happen before. What solved it for me was clearing data for google wallet in application manager and then uninstalling google wallet. After that I rerun the wallet installer and it works fine.
If you are using the installer try the following steps during install:
1. Install wallet for your setup (VZW and TW/AOSP)
2. After the installer reboots the phone, open wallet and run through the whole setup. Tap to pay shouldn't fail now.
3. Update wallet through the play store
4. Open wallet and make sure tap to play is still working
5. Use the wallet installer to restore build.prop
That is what works for me.
sorry but I used another method to get the build prop open everything works but I can't get it to set up and the method that you are asking me to try do I need to use the computer I read the instructions but I'm not sure besides just on the application that I need to download from the Play Store? You don't need a computer to do the method that I described. On your phone, just download and install "WalletInstaller.apk" from the thread I linked earlier, then follow the directions in the above post. The wallet installer app runs right on your phone.
Before you proceed with the installer, you will want to restore your build.prop to how it was originally before you edited it. If you're not wanting to use the wallet installer app, perhaps someone else could help out because I don't know the steps necessary to get tap to pay working manually. From the description of the wallet installer app, it does more than just edit the build.prop. I have no idea what else it does, but it works for me.
Okay thanks a lot everything that you told me up i clearly understand now you was very helpful thanks again.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
You're welcome. Hopefully everything works alright. I just did this a few days ago when I switched ROMs, so I know it still works.
Yes I know you guys just got the thing working making me jealous now I just gotta go in and put the build.prop back to where it was and then I will try this method that you told me to try I will let you know what happens.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Yes. The build.prop will restore to whatever it was at the time of the backup.

You can restore the build.prop at the very end. First confirm tap to pay works on google wallet as installed by the wallet installer app, then confirm that tap to pay still works after google wallet is updated through the play store. If tap to pay is still working after google wallet is updated, then you can restore build.prop using the wallet installer app.
Again thank you for helping me and being patient with me I just redid the Google app installer I clean data and uninstall wallet before now I'm waiting and see will that catch I don't know how long it took when you was setting it up how long did you have to wait again thank you for your help
