2.1 Facebook Contacts

I noticed on the 2.1 roms (Fresh and DamageControl). It syncs all your Facebook Contacts, not just the linked ones. I know you can prevent them from showing up in Contacts by adjusting your view settings, but whenever I goto compose a new e-mail or a new text and start typing in a contact, it still polls my Facebook friends and shows them on the dropdown as choices which is kind of annoying. Also for people that are linked it doesn't seem to cares, i.e. for people I have both on my phone and on Facebook it shows them twice on the drop down with the same information. Is this the intentend use or is this a bug and is there anyway to turn this off?
Thanks
this is my most annoying problem with 2.1 thus far. unknown numbers show up as a random person in my facebook, too.
i like the 1.5 way of dealing with facebook.
i think you can go into accounts & sync and unsync FB contacts, although I don't know if that will mess up current contacts or not. i also don't know if current contacts FB pics will never be updated again until manual sync.

The Contacts sync correctly on DamageControl as long as you're looking through the People app like he said because the Facebook option isn't checked under view but when you're composing a new message, be it email or sms, all the Facebook contacts show up. Even when you click "Phone" and scroll past your call history they show up.
Im using the damagecontrol rom and facebook sync isnt working at all. I have zero facebook contacts. Any suggestions?

Yes yes yes to the original post. We all know that the Facebook syncing is buggy. But pulling in all the contacts is horrible (Facebook and Gmail contacts). I can't figure out how to only sync My Contacts from GMail either. It pulls on all 500+ and then I can select only view those with a phone number. But syncing only My Contacts was so easy with 1.5. Why would they do away with that? Or am I stupid and overlooking it?

I want that option too and can't find it. I don't want to have to go through my GMail contacts (700 of them) to weed it down to 75
When I was using 2.0b, EVERY SINGLE CALL, not just unknowns, showed as the same person...but with the correct number for the person calling showing under the pic. What was really funny was that I don't actually have the number for the person whose pic was showing, lol!
I've noticed that if the FORMATTING of a number on facebook is different from your Google contact, it will take the facebook formatting over the Google formatting.
i.e. my wife's number on FB is formatted 17045551234 and on Google it's 704-555-1234.
when i view her contact and/or she calls, it shows 17045551234.
i wish we could disable importing the phone numbers or have that fixed
as soon as i unlink her FB it shows up right.

[Q] Contacts on WP7

I know WP7 is all about connecting people and stuff, but why is "formally known as contacts" now merged with "people"?
I have tons of contacts associated with my email address and scrolling through hundreds of contacts just to find my home number is ridiculous.
So my question is:
Is there a way to only display SIM contacts? Not facebook and email contacts..
EDIT.. I gave up, reseted my phone and made my primary email address my google (which i have no contacts on)
Then later added my windows live account..
Microsoft really needs to step their game up

Apparently SIM contacts can be imported but have no idea what about seeing them.
As for scrolling, you have Search button in People so no need to scroll.
You can also select by letter.

Yeah i know what you mean but in almost every letter category there are at least 20-39 contacts, since im using my business email for my phone...
I have imported my contacts and they are right in the mix in the overkill of contacts. Searching for them is meh, but if its the last resort i dont think Windows Phone 7 is for me. I just wanted the ability to slide straight to my contacts on the go without the hassle. Theres no reason my boss should be even there lol
If I understand correctly, you want only the contacts on your SIM to appear, but not contacts from your email accounts and facebook?
Not exactly sure how to show the SIM contacts, or if they show up by default. You could try going to Settings-->Email & Accounts, and clicking on the listed email accounts and unchecking "Contacts" under "Content to Sync". Also, going to Settings--> swype right to applications --> people, you can select to "Only add Facebook info to existing contacts" under "Include Facebook friends as contacts", assuming you haven't tried these steps already. That should prevent the contacts on your email account from being seen on your phone.
As for the SIM contacts, i would assume they show up once they are detected? Maybe someone else could verify, since I don't have any way of checking.
Yeah I know about those settings, I even removed my Facebook account from the phone. But with my windows live account under content to sync it only has "email" as an option. Nothing else.. I also heard that since its the primary email It does everything by default and cannot be removed without a factory reset.. Which i just cannot do :[

I dont recommend using Google Sync. Its most most inbredly retarded system ever. Every time you sync it duplicates everything (which is not technically a sync). Right now I have anywhere from 4-7 copies of the same contact number, it creates a new copy if you change the name, or add an email address etc. Then you have to "link" them to not see the duplicates, then when you want to call or text it asks which of the 7 numbers you want to use (even through they are all the same exect effing number). Google needs to take the kid with the waterwings, helmet, and droolcup out of that position.
I also have yet to see where you can delete or edit the "database" where it syncs from. Because under my contacts in google, it only shows 1 number, 1 email address etc. Yet as soon as I "sync", bam, 7 copies of everything.

I wish I could tell you what you're doing wrong. I added my contacts through GMail - Contacts about a year ago. I've deleted then synced dozens of times and I still have the exact same 300ish contacts and they never double up. I used to have issues with contacts doubling up and creating more than necessary when I was on my iPhone - but since I've gone Android I've had no issues whatsoever.

sounds like you restored your contacts through MyBackup or something similar?
Google contact sync works great. Been using it for the last 3 year since I had an iPhone 3G. It definitely works much better on Android though.
I don't restore using backups, I restore using sync. Just for S&G's I wiped and synced again. It re-duplicated. I now have up to 8 entries for majority of my contacts.
I've read that if you go to Gmail (browser) and set up the contacts for your phone in a "My Contacts" folder, then wipe your contacts and load only "My Contacts" when syncing, that it will work. To me the dumb part is that you have to go in and set up every one of your contacts from scratch.
Instead of only giving the option to "link" all those duplicates it should give the option to merge, or delete select contacts.
Even though the contacts are "linked" when I go to People or whatever (the contacts app) so there is only 1 "entry" or listing, I feel that to be fixed by Sense. However, when I compose a new message, right off the bat in A's, it starts off with 5 entries for the same contact. An e-mail address, a 10 digit phone number, a + and then 10 digit number, and there two more for the 11 digit number (1 then number, and +1 then number)
It's really, really retarded.

I'm guessing this is not what the majority of people using Google contact sync experience. Like I said, I've been using this for awhile and this has not happened to me on my Inspire, and I've flashed several ROMs and had to resync my contacts over and over. I've never had to "start from scratch". Maybe you need to go to the google help forums.
Maybe this isn't my first android phone, maybe its happened since i had my captivate, maybe it also happens on a coworkers droid x, maybe it also happens on another coworkers nexus, may it does the same thing on everybody else I know's phones.
I never said i have to start from scratch, I said that seems to be the only way to set it up to work right, is to do it from GMail on a computer. Creating those contacts in a folder you create called My Contacts.
Do me a favor. Use a stock mms app. Go to create new text, then add recipients. Unless you set all your contacts up in the My Contacts tab of google before ever syncing from a fresh phone/flash, you will see duplicates there.
It is possible to merge your contacts thru Gmail online. It does a fair job of removing duplicates but not a perfect job.
You're not the only one who can't stand the way Google handles contacts. It's a major problem coming from WM6 and Outlook to Google. I'm hoping that HTC's tool to import contacts will work and I'll be able to clear out a ton of stuff from my Google contacts that's bogus.

[Q] How to remove locally saved phone numbers in ICS?

I am unable to delete 2 contacts i have saved, if i go to my dialer they show at the top under all contacts with phone numbers. if i go to my contacts "Peoples" they do not show. Not sure how to remove these entries in ICS.

Try going into your contacts app and then hit menu>display options>then hit ur gmail account to expand it>search for starred in
android and check the box>try looking for the two contacts now in ur contacts list.
Im not sure if this will be exact for ICS roms and i cant check for sure right now because im on a Gingerbread rom but hopefull this helps.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
ah thanks, i guess maybe the local numbers were "starred" because those contacts did not exist in my account. i assume it just gets starred based on the activity of that number.
edit: nvm the #s are still showing...
hmm upon toggling "show starred contacts in android on and off it updated with them being removed". might be a bug not having it update automatically.

non existant contacts appear in dialer

Hi,
This happened to me on several roms (Right now I'm on CM7.2) ;
When I start to manually enter a number on my phone dialer - i see contacts that are not in my contacts list. How do I delete them ? Where are they coming from ?
I lent the phone to a client of mine 2 months ago for a week, but since then I completely deleted the rom I gave him and I have different sim and memory card, So where are the contacts coming from ?
Thank you
Hi Fish
go to settings -> synchronization
and check what accounts you have synced there (gmail, whatsapp, facebook etc.)
next you can display or undisplay them in the contacts app "display" setting.
It probably comes from the gmail account.
make sure you see the unnecessary contacts on contacts app and delete them there.
Thank you for your help itzik. It was a category named "other" in my gmail account - although i checked it several times and just saw it now......
