non existant contacts appear in dialer - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hi,
This happened to me on several roms (Right now I'm on CM7.2) ;
When I start to manually enter a number on my phone dialer - i see contacts that are not in my contacts list. How do I delete them ? Where are they coming from ?
I lent the phone to a client of mine 2 months ago for a week, but since then I completely deleted the rom I gave him and I have different sim and memory card, So where are the contacts coming from ?
Thank you

Hi Fish
go to settings -> synchronization
and check what accounts you have synced there (gmail, whatsapp, facebook etc.)
next you can display or undisplay them in the contacts app "display" setting.
It probably comes from the gmail account.
make sure you see the unnecessary contacts on contacts app and delete them there.

Thank you for your help itzik. It was a category named "other" in my gmail account - although i checked it several times and just saw it now......

[Q] Duplicate Facebook Contacts

I am looking through my contacts list and I am noticing several of my contacts have several links to their same facebook profile. Since they are Facebook, I am unable to delete them. How can you have several Facebook links to the same Facebook profile? If I unlink them then I have separate entries in contacts.
Did you just download the upgrade to facebook? I had mine working fine and then I downloaded the upgrade which was suppose to fix issue with the syncing timing out. Then suddenly I had 9 facebook contacts for each person it was sync'd too

Yes I do have the updated version.
I had the same problem, what I did was unlink both facebook accounts from my contacts, which removed everything facebook related and then just added 1 back.
That was my solution as well, but I'm not relishing the prospect of doing that for every facebook contact I have. Anyone come up with a quicker fix yet?
What he means is to remove the facebook accounts completely from the menu, settings, accounts screen.
Then when you add one back be sure to use the top one that is listed under "Integrated contact accounts." The sync from the new version of facebook does not work properly on our phones for some reason.
Same problem- removing facebook account doesnt remove links
Each contact of mine has 4 "unknown" links that seem to be facebook links. I cant seem to find a way around manually deleting each link one by one. I removed the facebook sync accounts and the facebook contacts still show up and the duplicates are still there. Also when I try to go to display options it says "sim initializing" and stays there. Only if I take out my SIM card and replace it can I access the display options Advice? This also caused my phone to run out of database memory and slow it down alot.

[Q] Managing Contacts, simple options?

Hi, Just got my charge today and synced up my contacts from my gmail (primary contacts list), facebook and twitter. But my contacts seem to be a mess. Many of them were automagically linked together but many others just show repeats of each other and when I link them manually, it seems as if I am loosing some information. Also, many of my google contacts show up multiple times with repeated info, when I link them it just ends up doubling up on everything. Moving from an old HTC windows mobile phone, I am stuck with these ridiculous notes in contacts that HTC used for its sync.
An example, My friend Becky has two contact entries, both from google (despite only one entry in my google contacts). One contains most of the info and the other just an email address, when I join them I loose the number and name and just end up with her email address as the contact. What gives? My question:
Is there a decent contact manager recommended that will join contacts as one contact (not multiple) and remove redundant information?
Is there any logic to joining contacts that will prevent me from loosing information like that or am I doing something wrong?
How do I add my google contacts "into my phone" so that I can use it to create groups and the such? I believe I can just export a contacts file and import it but I am afraid I would run into the same problem of multiple contacts with the same information in them.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
ok heres what i would do, remove all the accounts with contacts from the phone and then reboot. now add your google account back and check it. if every thing is good. move on with Facebook and such.. i dont let Facebook sync with my phone after what happened to me. anyways check it again.
this fixed my problem with google and hotmail, and other accounts. hopefully it will work for you.
Or you can open up contacts, hit menu and set the privcey filters..like don't show Facebook contacts etc
I dont think so
If you download the Facebook app from the market it gives you different options to sync. I sync only with exsiting contacts that are in my phonebook. That way I don't have a million people in my contacts list.
I followed your advice and got it the way I like. I had to sync twitter and facebook through the phone and manually combine contacts. At least now when I user the message app, I don't have four or five of the same people. Out was word when I first noticed the facebook and twitter apps both have an additional sync option. This is my first android smartphone too. Thanks for the advice.

Gmail my contact syncing problem

Hi you guys,
I've just moved from Blackberry to Android HTC Chacha and I face with problem with syncing my contact stored in Gmail.
When I do the syncing from Gmail to HTC Chacha, it syncs not only My Contacts (only phone number) but also all the email addresses which I sent email to.
My phone contact in Gmail is nearly 300 but the contacts stored in the phone now become > 900 contacts.
I do some searches and find one solution:
- Go to people -> menu -> view -> Google -> tick only My Contacts.
Now when I view contact (people) i see only the contact with phone number. But when I do the search for a contact, it appears the results of email addresses too.
Could you guys plzz help me on that
Ah after awhile I found a way to solve this trouble.
Sol. 1: If you just want to see & use the phone contact in the mobile phone; all you have to do:
- Open people app (contact).
- Press Menu key then View.
- In Google menu, untick all except for Ungrouped Contacts
- Then back, press menu key, delete -> delete all.
(Don't know whether when you do the sync again the email addresses will bump to you phone again).
Sol. 2: (what I myself used):
- Open gmail
- Choose contact function
- In the contact list, choose Other Contacts. Then just delete all the contacts (email addresses) here.
- Delete all the contact in mobile phone, then do syncing.
Some ppl suggest that we may choose which list to be viewed from the people app (press menu -> view). But actually it is nonsense. Even though what we see is the phone contacts only, but when do the search for certain contact; the email address appears
great ways

I think you're just going to have to manually delete duplicates the first time. After that, there shouldn't be any issues with duplicate entrees. I've only had that issue when I put contacts on my phone first and then synced with Gmail after.
That's just based on some of my experience. So anybody, correct me if I am wrong.

The Samsung contacts app started randomly linking contacts

The Samsung contacts app started randomly linking contacts which now have synced back to my other contacts provider i.e. Google contacts.
I only noticed when I got a call and my phone showed me a contact name different to the person actually calling. I then edited that contact, went to manage linked contacts and noticed that the Samsung contacts app had merged 3 contacts from 3 different countries with completely different names.
Every day I discover another one of these mis-merged contacts.
What I am looking for is a "unlink all contacts" menu.
Any ides how to solve this mess (I have about 1500 contacts and no idea how many have been messed with by this app)?
anyone please? any ideas or feedback? where to get support?
I have the same issue, the phone numbers were getting mixed up from different accounts such as WhatsApp, telegram etc

Contacts app confusion

Hi All,
Just migrated from iPhone to OnePlus 7 Pro, and am enjoying my return to Android very much.
However, I'm really puzzled by how the inbuilt contacts app is working.
I've always kept my contacts synced with my Google account, so when I moved across I simply added my Google account and there were all my contacts.
So far, so simple. My expectation was that the Contacts app on the phone would simply display my Google contacts and that any edits would be reflected in the Google account.
I've recently tried to edit a contact, and I find that it's not so simple. For the particular contact, I appear to have 3 linked contacts. One from Google, one from WhatsApp and one from the phone itself.
To make matters worse, there appear to be more phone contacts than there are contacts in the Google account. How the hell did that happen? I've not added any new contacts, or told the phone to maintain any contacts locally.
I've now told the Contacts app to only show contacts that are in the Google account, and to use the Google account as the default for new contacts.
My questions are this:
1) Why does the phone appear to be maintaining a separate sets of contacts?
2) How do I know which field to edit in a contact. Attached screenshot shows show there are three identical sets of phone numbers. Which one is for the Google account?
3) Can I stop the phone from maintaining it's own local contacts database?
4) Can I make the phone only show the Google contacts when editing?
5) Can I get a view that shows which contacts are on the phone, but not in Google? I want to work out where the extra ones have come from.
Perhaps, I'm missing the point of how Android does this. If anyone could explain, that would be great.
Thanks,
Andy.
