4.1.1 OTA still gives lagginess - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Opened my brand new Tab 2 P5110 10.1 yesterday and immediately received the Jellybean 4.1.1 OTA upgrade (UK).
I have noticed there is a certain lagginess when scrolling. Not a lot, but it is noticeable.
I even notice it when scrolling web pages.
I installed Apex launcher to see if that would help with the UI, (as I know there are options to speed things up), but the lagginess is still there.
I'm actually kind of underwhelmed by my Tab, after using my GT-N7100 Note II, and I can see I'll just end up selling it on if it doesn't improve.
Anyone recommend a ROM that will speed up my lovely TAB?
It's rooted, and can add CWM easily enough. No external SD card.
Thanks in advance.

lag free kernal
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950052 try this kernel out it will remove ALL YOUR LAG and help with your gaming I tested it and it worked flawlessly its for rooted stock ROMs I hope it helps you

Thanks.
Will this work on 4.1.x (Jellybean) rather than just 4.0.4 as the original post?

Interesting but i came from a Note 2 to a P3100 (needed a bigger screen) and after flashing to jerky bean i too had high hopes after using the note and it being blazingly fast. The simple truth was i noticed that due to the lack of memory compared to the note and its whopping 2GB RAM, it did lag the more apps I had open. I have managed to solve this by disabling a ton of Samsung stuff, and i regularly hit the clear all icon to shut down apps in the background.
Sounds like a hassle but it really isn't and doing this keeps my tab running blazing fast with no lag.
Bottom line i don't think the tab will run the same as the note 2....but of you figure out a way, if be interested to know.
Had a friend with the same problem on his 10.1 and he's done the same as me and he's seen an improvement.
I also installed holo launcher and have to confess I've never looked back!

No it will not work.

Maybe you can try any custom ROM in here.. . They get running smooth too.

There are Zero jellybean custom roms based on stock for P5110 I flashed the official CLK7 version with Odin and rooted it, then uninstalled the samsung bloatware, and it runs pretty fine, but it could definitely be better...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

Problem is: there is always something not working properly with custom roms thats why I dont want to flash just yet.
Best would be clean, optimised stock rom with custom kernel.
I like the way it feels its just the lag is unbearable....

Can someone please help me get rid of the horrible lag on this tablet its unbearable..I have the wifi US version.
Thanks
A friend of mine got me the US P6210 (EULA3 Firmware) on holiday and bought it back to the UK for me.
I know exactly what you mean mate. The lag was horrible. Id open ONE browser window and it would crash after some time! crazy stuff.
Anyway the only way I solved this problem was by installing a new ROM. Its the Galaxy ROM HD by Ace9876. The visuals are exactly the same and you wont notice any difference but the ROM is highly optimized and tweaked for speed and stability. That, you can notice! Since I installed that ROM I have no problems with lag or stutter or whatever. I can have 10 tabs open in the browser and no lag whatsoever. Amazing.
First youll need to be rooted and also have Clockworkmod installed. This thread shows you how: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379532
Then you need to install the ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697123
Enjoy.
I was able to minimize some of the lag by rooting, removing the bloat, then installing a different launcher (like go launcher or adw)

[Q] Downgrading from (stock) ICS to Honeycomb

Hi all, So i have a galaxy tab 2 7" gt-p3113 with root access. I need to know how to, if possible, downgrade from the stock ics 4.03 that it was shipped with to Honeycomb. There just arent enough apps availiable for ICS and a lot of them are so buggy I'd rather have honeycomb. Any ideas? If I am not mistaken the process is pertinent to each device and might not even be possible since the gt-p3113 and gt-p3110 are shipped with ics... Hopefully it can be done

nothing to downgrade. ics is stock lowest on these. And I don't see much desire to develop custom roms for an older android system. Best bet just wait it out, ics is new, just like hc and gb were. When they came out apps had glitches too.
I haven't found any apps that give me issues on ICS yet. Have you bothered reporting the apps you're having issues with to let the developer(s) know there are problems? Also, the only way to get Honeycomb would be to build it from AOSP, which likely isn't going to happen.
What apps are you having issues with? I haven't seen any apps having issues with ics.

Yeah ok... i was just hoping. Yes I have been reporting all the issues. Alot of them its mostly it loads to the title screen then crashes and closes. I cant tell you specifically which ones, its happened with a lot of apps, mostly games tho. I just really want to be able to play nova 3 and modern combat 3 and Im having trouble getting an apk and the sd data files...

I've gotten those two games to run and download SD data by modifying my build.prop to match the Galaxy Nexus.. You don't want to run them on your tablet anyway, it was quite laggy when I tried. Other GL games work fine.. like order and chaos, asphalt 6, etc.
ya same nova3 was fine mc3 was super laggy and choppy.... sad day.
would overclocking it help? and if so, what is it safe to overclock it to?

Mc3 maybe didn't run right because it needs some mods. It didn't run right on my phone until they released it officially for it.
not enough ram for ics os
galaxy 2 doesn't have enough ram to run ics and apps too, at least not efficiently. I have sg2 phone and now the tab and I think ICS uses too many resources to allow apps to run effectively too. I see alot of force closes and very laggy performance . I upgraded phone to iCS and hated it. Odined back to gingerbread. May take the tab back because of ics. (Tab has same memory structure as sg2 phone ). I do use GO launcher which I'm sure eats some resources ,so I'll try taking that off and see if there is a vast improvement, but I suspect there won't be .
I've actually found ICS to be less buggy then HC and GB. Maybe your fc issues are caused by something else? Gameloft's non-support for the gtab2 is a known issue, but the other problems could be fixed by fixing permissions in CWM.

JB Nexus S?

Okay I like my nexus. As a matter of fact its the best phone I've ever owned but... Am I alone when I say it can't handle jelly bean? I've noticed stutters in various places compared to ICS. Or am I missing something?

Have you tried a factory reset? Mine was running very smoothly on the OTA. I also wiped my phone before and after the update.
Honestly I don't find it that much buttery. In some app it even seems slower. But I'm running custom ROM with some restored apps.
Maybe with a total fresh start it will work better...

I had the same problem with the OTA. JellyBelly runs smooth though.
Seems a lot better than ICS 4.0.4 stock. Google now is slow to load but otherwise everything is sweet.

The search (response between pressing the search softkey and the search box came up, I need to press it again to show the keyboard) is a lot slower now thanks to Google Now, other stuffs are same for me.

Are you running OTA or some custom ROM? I tried a few different JB ROM's + kernels and wasn't very impressed. It was a very stuttery experience with lots of slowing downs. I guess i had too much junk laying around after so many flashes.
So i wiped everything, went back to stock image and got the OTA JB that way and rooted it. It's been running very smoothly ever since I wouldn't say it's a HUGE improvement over ICS..but maybe like 20% smoother. It's definitely not slower than ICS (i was running both stock ICS 4.04 and CM9 RC1 before. The only places i noticed the lack of buttery smoothness is when opening Google Now and the Camera app. The camera itself is fast and all, but the start up time is longer than i remember on ICS.
From my experience, it's actually "smoother" but not really faster than ICS.
Just went back to CM9 RC2 and I must say that it's much faster than any JB ROMs out there but just doesn't have buttery smooth animation.
I quite like JB. I don't use custom roms (I prefer stock with matr1x), and JB is nicer that ICS. Previously, recent apps was useless to me. It took forever to load. now it loads in an instant. also, I don't get ~10 seconds of lag after I install/uninstall an app, faster to boot, faster to finish loading apps after booting and the ui is much nicer. Ofc, it does stutter from time to time, but it's negligible, as far as I'm concerned. Project Butter is really doing stuff right.
Ofc, it's not as smooth and fast as on the gnex, but that's to be expected. The hw is not as good. But it does a pretty good job. I really wish google would upgrade the kernel and make it use all the ram available...don't see why they don't use it all...

Instead of pressing the search soft key just press the Google logo on the Google bar... that will bring up search faster
mine seems good
I understand your feelings, but JB on nexus s is better than ICS, maybe not faster but definitely smoother. JB does give a nicer feel to the whole phone experience.
If you're on custom rom, try the stock one Afresh. I flashed stock Ics then got JB ota. I have also used Stevens JB and oodies. But after a fresh install, the stock one seems the best. However, I'm waiting for CM10 as CM9 is definitely better than stock ICS. I'm expecting the same from CM10.

I am asking myself the same question as the op. When I got my nexus s about a year ago it replaced a horribly slow nokia n86. The new UI felt fast. With time I got used to the speed of the UI and was generally quite happy with the performance.
Then came ICS and I began to wonder. Sometimes apps took a few secons to open a certain menu, sometimes the same menu was opened in half a second. Now with JB i get the impression that these inconsistent lags are appearing even more often. A typical usecase for me:
Listening to music via BT headset -> press power -> unlock screen -> select (standard) music app -> search for a specific song.
Sometimes this works as expected with <0.5s between steps, sometimes unlocking or opening the music app takes >3 seconds.
I should note that my system is completely stock and was never unlocked or rooted. I did the OTA to ICS and now to JB as intended by google. I never whiped any cache nor did I ever reinstall. When I have the time I may try that just to see if it makes any difference. For the moment though, I am left with the impression that 512mb ram and a single core CPU are not enough for a 2012 OS.
I'm finding a big improvement over ICS. I can't say I've found anything that doesn't work at least as good as ICS and a lot of stuff works better for me. The smoothness has really improved my 'user experience'.
That being said the app developers need to play catch up and get their stuff optimized for JB.
Can't wait to try the amazing custom JB ROMs that are going to be rolling out soon as well.

Same here, I notice quite a few stutters, and I believe more than I had on ICS.
Maybe I'll try to flash stock Google ICS, and then do the official Google OTA update. The current ROM I'm using is this one, but maybe that is really not 100% the same as the Google OTA version?
Also, I'm truly disappointed at the fact that I can't use my voice on Google Now without having the whole cell phone in English. If I don't have the menus in English, all it does is Google searches... Basically seems like anyone that doesn't speak English natively is alienated.
Hopefully chainfire updates chainfire 3d opengl driver to work with jb .
Made ICS significantly smooth should do same with JB
Currently using CM10 and it works perfectly. I have not seen any lag whatsoever so i am pretty happy with it. I used the stock OTA but it was a major battery drain. That's really all I have seen that is negative.

Can try to disable Force GPU rendering in Developer options to solve shutters.
On my i9023 JB, the graphic is slower but my battery life has improve than on ICS. Dont know it is because of JB or I reset the batt setting b4 upgrade to JB.

[Q] Tab 2 7.0 P3110 Pre Root Question

Hi,
I just got a free tab 2 with a Samsung camera, and have given it to my son to use, playing Agent Dash it often lags to the point where its not really playable, but sometimes its fine which is bizzare, anyway I'm considering rooting it and putting a custom rom on which I'm guessing will help???
Question is If I put some rom on and custom recovery etc can I go back to a stock Samsung recovery and firmware and reset the flash counter should I wish?
Thanks in advance
edit. Also are there any roms which look similar to the Samsung stock one with touchwiz that would perform better?

I"d say you won't get any improvement. Sounds like a app problem. I"d send a note to the developer. There is little difference if any in performance between CM based JB and Stock. Are you on the stock JB ? There is a difference in performance between ICS and JB.
And no , there is no stock ROM that performs better. IN general I'd say the tab performs very well. and problems you see are usually poorly written apps.of which there are a lot

Yeah updated it as soon as I got it yesterday its on P3110XXCLK7, I had another one earlier in the week but that came and the box was smashed up so got it swapped, I only briefly tried that one but it seemed to play fine, I restored this one last night thinking that might help but its come back, I was playing it myself a few hours ago for about 20-30 mins and it was fine, put it on charge and then took it off charge and tried again and it started to lag big time.
If I flash the stock rom via odin over the top it wont affect the flash counter will it? Maybe something got buggered during the update? Having said that it only appears to be this app

Falshing stock ROM by Odin will not affect the counter.
I never experience lag on this tablet, but certain apps will mess up any device. If you are having a problem with only one app , check with the developer. if you are not sure what's slowing things down try a cpu analyzer and see what is eating your resources up..
A lot of games now access the web during the game to provide interactive play or offer to sell you things, that can often slow things down.

[Q] A Rom that makes Tab 2 as smooth as an Ipad 2

I'm in the same ROM searching boat as a few others on here but can't find a definitive answer.
Recently got the Tab 2 and after reading some good reviews I'm really disappointed with the endless glitchyness. I've got an Ipad2 which is smooth as silk but I don't get on with IOS at all. Have an Android phone and love it and originally bought a Motorola Xoom and ended up selling it because of the glitchyness and bought the iPad. Couple of years on whilst I didn't expect the Tab 2 to match the Ipad I just wasn't ready for the constant sticking when even doing the simplest of tasks such a browsing and I'm not overloading it at all. On the face of it the Tab 2 seems no better than the Xoom. I hope I'm wrong.
I didn't want to start rooting as I did with the Xoom (then in an effort fo make it smoother) so I feel I'm back to square one but am hoping there is a Rom that can make the Tab 2 as smooth as the iPad. If there is or if there is another way to smooth it out if I'd really appreciate any help there is out there. Have done a hard reset a couple of times also without much, if any, improvement. Thx.
Have you updated to Jelly Bean? It's pretty much smooth. I use the stock JB without root and don't have anything to claim about, and I also use Nova Launcher Prime since the 4.0.3 wasn't that smooth.
