4g Tether on JB 4.2 - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone recommend a rom, app, or method that will allow tether over 4g on 4.2?
I've tried native tether on rasbean and HP's rom. I've also tried WiFi tether app and have been unsuccessful in my efforts. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any suggestions at all?

I think the issue is that people aren't having the same issue as you are. Native tethering doesn't work for me, but the "WiFi Tether" app does.

Thanks for responding. What you say is very peculiar. I've now tried two 4.2 ROMs and 4g tether didn't work on either (with or without WiFi tether app). Perhaps I'm using wrong an incompatible kernel or rom.
1. What rom/kernel combo are you running?

It may also be your provider - the upgrade to 4.1.2 "enforces carrier settings" on tethering. It actually makes me ponder rolling back to ICS so I can use native tethering, to be honest.

I've managed to get Wifi Tether to work on the Provision Rom for 4.1.2. No luck with 4.2.1, though.

Portable Hotspot

Does portable hotspots work for anyone? I didn't know if there was a monthly charge to get it working but everytime I try using it the other device can't connect

If you're using an unrooted stock rom, then I believe you have to be a subscriber to T-mobile's add-on hotspot plan. If you're using a rooted custom rom, like CM7, then it's built-in...and the only thing you have to worry about is your data usage.

Thank you, i'll wait for the tmobile OTA update then root my phone again
Did you set up encryption or leave the security open? I'm on the gingerbread update unrooted and my hotspot works fine. It worked fine on froyo stock unrooted as well.

yeah how can the cellular co's dictate how we can use our data ?
does it stress the towers more using wifi hotspot to our laptop ?
Somebody should do something about this , what can we do ?

Did they see the hotspot? Also it times out after a period of inactivity, perhaps it had timed out before you connected the laptop.
Maybe even try with encryption on.
I can also verify that the stock unrooted Froyo ROM does tethering without anything special in your plan.

My idiot friend managed to find a way to get a wifi hotspot without paying for it and he's the kind of person who never updates his apps because he thinks it's too much trouble.
It's really not that big of a deal.

Photon, wifi tether, and the touchpad. Help please

I am assuming the photon only does ad-hoc. I have tried changing wifi tether to epic, evo, galaxy tab with no luck. I cant get the touchpad to discover my photon to try the bluetooth method. Any ideas?

I thought using wifihotspot works and the tp picks up the signal and connects

Im using the wifi tether app, not the built in hotspot

TP does not support Adhoc tething and some android phones can only do adhoc tethering and not true wifi/hotspot. I know some Android phones are using the beta version of wireless tethering but my phone won't run it, keep getting errors. So someone like me can't use their phone with their TP unless someone can develop a patch that would allow TP to accept Adhoc connections.
I am looking for the solution to this same problem. I have a photon and have used the wifi-tether app and my touchpad will not detect it. I know its because of the ad-hoc mode but is there a patch I can dl on the touchpad that can support ad-hoc mode?
we might have to wait until the port is done. Hopefully they will write it in.
tethering apk
I tether with my evo3d using beta v3 and I also tether with my wifes EVO shift and its using a tethering app from the market. No issues works with 3g and 4g

Can't tether with my iPhone 3G and Vodafone 845. I know the phones can't do infrastructure mode, so it's obviously a limitiation of the touchpad/webOs lacking support for ad-hoc wifi.
We need something that at least enables ad-hoc mode on the touchpad, even better a new BT stack with DUN/PAN included.

what(Preware) Kernel are you using?
I can tether to my X10a using 2.3.3 as a hotspot. I don't have the micro to micro usb to try the usb tether.
What I really like is the unmentioned 5Ghz Wifi. I can get 40 mbps via speedtest.net (I have 50 mbps at home).

I believe the evo's have infrastructure capabilities, where the photon does not.

You need to use the built in tethering. I know Motorola has infrastructure mode. Not sure if the photon has the entitlement hack.

[Q] any solution to tether with ICS?

Hi all,
I have been trying for a while now to get the wifi tethering app and the native hotspot app to work in ICS on my NS4g (i have flashed all the ICS roms and even back tracked to older 2.3 roms) but nothing seems to work. The other devices can see the network and connect, but there is never any type of data exchanged. (the wifi icons never show an active online connection) I can use my GF's Evo with the unlocked Sprint hotspot to connect every device I own (tablets, laptops, etc...) but my Nexus will not work at all. I can get the ad hoc tethering to work with the old wireless tether apk, but only my laptop recognizes the connection.
Is there any rom, app, or fix to get my Nexus S 4g to tether in infrastructure mode? I love this phone, and the lack of tethering is persuading me to jump back on board with my OG Evo.
Any help, insight, or recommendation would be appreciated. I've been searching online for weeks looking for a solution and have come up empty.
Thanks
Jason
Have you tried open garden ? On the market

Yes I have tried it. That app only supports ad hoc connections
Wow I do not have this issue
Try the one in the phones settings with a simple name ssid like "cranberry" and have it be open.
That's what I do. Also wifi has to be off.

[Q] how to get wifi hotspot after rooting

I recently rooted my HTC inspire with Hack Ace and everything went fine. I want to implement wifi hotspot with out the message from att to pop up. What's the next step?
Get a tethering app. Some roms have the feature baked in.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
try foxfi, its good
I tried that one an also WiFi tether, pdanet, but eather say that is blocked by HTC or get the at&t message. I haven't flashed a new Rom yet or changed anything, just rooted. My main purpose in rooting is that, tethering.

Anything?

Now this isn't a "hotspot" app per say.
But it gives you the ability to use your phone as a wifi tether.
Try, easytether.

Tethering not working on 4G connection, works on 3G

I just upgraded my phone to the CM 10.1 stable rom, installed the AT&T/Rogers radio UCMC1 to try and fix issues with LTE not working
i got LTE working as there was a setting in teh phone information menu to use lte/gsm/wcdma
after this i got 4g working and i felt like trying tethering and discovered tethering will not work when in 4g, but it works fine in 3g
has anyone heard or encountered this issue? I tried searching topics but they are all seem to be that tethering is not working at all on their phones whether it is 3g or 4g
if not i'm assuming it might be an issue with rogers? does anyone know if rogers does tethering through 4g?
My computer stays on limited access so I'm watching this thread for an answer or possible fix. I will say that I'm working around it with an app called FoxFi.

I'm on Rogers and tethering with Beanstalk and Moretz 3.0.9 just fine, and the RUXUMA7 radio. (If you're on Rogers you should really try this one, I've gotten better battery, reception and data speeds with it than UCMC1).
That being said with 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 aosp ROMs tethering doesn't work by default, you have to use a .sh script within a terminal app to fix your iptables before tethering works. Since cm10.1 is aosp you would have needed to look here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136684
Next time try to search around as a google search for "skyrocket xda WiFi tether" would have given you the answer.
As for you DSDONE I'm disappointed in you, you know better

I had this exact issue spent days looking for a fix and finally found one here;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136684
I couldn't figure out how to make the shortcut so I just go into gscript lite and activate the script and then run tether hotspot and it works perfectly couldn't believe it.
