Noob question about ROMs - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I come from the galaxy nexus world and my brother just got the s3. My question is which is better on the s3? Carrier ROMs that are customized or original android ROMs? Not asking which ROM is the best or anything like that!

Depends completely on personal preference, while TW ROMs will usually give you a bit better battery and reception, AOSP ROMs are beautiful and 4.2.1 is already out.

Just remember to backup your imei before you flash anything. Flashing AOSP roms tend to drop your imei a lot more then any touchwiz rom.

TW tends to be more stable and has the Samsung look to it. AOSP tends to be a little lighter and has of of the Google look. You get the newer features first from the AOSP roms but they are a little more buggy.

[Q] Which JB rom is the most stable and what radio should I use?

Hey,
my friend just bought a skyrocket and I will be rooting it for him.
Is there a fairly "stable" CM10 rom or JB rom?
and which radio am I supposed to use with it?
thank you
Save you the trouble because this will be locked.
In the SR community our Mods don't allow these sorts of questions since it leads to trolls and flaming.
In other words, I'm not allowed to answer your question but can advise you in trying different ROMs and seeing what your friend would like.

Superlite CM10+Superlite Gapps was really good when I tried it. I'm actually going to install it again since I'm still tinkering with mine.
Only downside I noticed, and it's probably some easy fix I missed, in GL benchmark on egypt 2.1, ICS CM9 was 52fps, JB CM10 SL was 45fps.

Best threads are subjective. I suggest you read and give them a quick test or stick to Samsung based firmware

[Q] Unsatisfied with Redemption ROM 2.0, don't know where to go from here

I had an Incredible, also with Verizon, that I rooted and had Cyanogenmod installed for almost the entire duration of owning the phone. I have the S3 now and I rooted it and flashed Redemption ROM 2.0, thinking it would be decent. It's not. I'm still on Ice Cream Sandwich and not really sure what my options are from here. I've heard there's a ton of bugs with CM10 (as expected, it's unofficial) and the rest of the ROMs for ICS in the list on this site don't really look appealing to me. Plus, I'm not entirely sure how to get to 4.1 from my 4.0.4.
Cleanroms by Scott have been my daily drivers. Scott is very on top of things. He answers about 99.9% of post. Fast, stable and great on battery.

There are ROMs that are based off the Android 4.1.1 leak provided by Samsung and Verizon. There are official nightlies for CM10 as well. You might want to check them out when you have the chance.

Uhm beans rom B5 is amazing with an AOSP feel to touch wiz.
Scotts cleanroms are always good.
CM10 really isn't that bad honestly.

+1
if you like cyanogenmod install it on your phone.
i hate touchwiz. ill never go back at this point. except to try any note 2 port that comes over
Clean rom 5 is a great daily driver. I run that with 4.2 camera and keyboard on top of it. It's updated frequently and gets great battery life.
Being based on tw is a downside for some people but it runs great.
I recommend it 100%

If you want AOSP that is solid try Slimbean, Eclipse, Liquid or ParanoidAndroid. They are all solid and work great IMO. I got bored with AOSP and recently went back to TW based Clean ROM.... With all the Aroma options and themes it is wicked nice, fast and super stable!!!!

Best Roms?

I am currently running stock rom 4.1.1.
What Roms do you use?
Why?
I'm looking for something fast, and durable.
Not too flashy, somewhat minimal but I want it to make me feel like switching from stock 4.1.1 was worth voiding my warranty.
Any suggestions on what Rom I should use?
Thank you fellow android users.

Depends on what you want out of the ROM. If you want to stick with the Touchwiz look, then I definitely recommend CleanROM, SynergyROM, GalaxyMOD, or Jelly 'Beans' build.
If you want to stick with Stock Android (a lot faster and smoother, but with less features), then I would recommend CM 10.1, or AOKP. You can also try some of the unofficial CM 10.1 ROMs as well since they all have unique features as well.

I knew I'd get this reply. I searched "Touchwiz" in the development forum and I am not finding any touchwiz UI roms. I mean I can go stock and root, but I was hoping to find a touchwiz roms with the improvements people usually add to custom roms.
thanks for the quick reply
Well there's galaxy mod, synergy, eclipse tw, delta two, beans rom.. Those are some that I can name from the top of my head.

You are not finding them because you didn't read the ROMs threads telling EXACTLY what these ROMs are based on. Most of the ROMs on the android development section are based on Touch wiz unless posted otherwise.

There must be some kind of miscommunication going on here. The first two pages I looked through not one ROM was using the TouchWiz UI. They're all the stock android UI.
Maybe I'm not asking the right question?
I'm looking for the stock TouchWiz UI experience, but without all the bloat and other crap that comes with it stock.

I'm staring at the first page of the dev section (not original dev) and I see a minimum of eight TW rom threads. If I understand you correctly, you just want TW with as much stripped out as possible right? If so, try CleanRom Lite Edition. Seriously debloated TW JB 4.1.1 rom.
You say "stock android UI", but stock for us is stock TW. AOSP is not stock for this phone.

That was my problem! I was looking under original development. /facepalm
I was a bit confused about what kind of roms belonged where, even after reading the stickied thread in orig dev. But I understand now! :silly:
So thanks for the help.

Haha glad everyone could help! Basically, OG development is for those who built from source or developed something truly unique. Development is for the items that do not fit into that category. Typically all kernels and most AOSP roms will go into the OG dev section whereas mods, guides, and TW roms go into the dev section.

Recommended ROMs Please?

Hey everyone...
Just looking for some advice on an S3 ROM. I'm on the S4 w T-Mobile but I'm looking for a ROM to flash on S3 for my boyfriend. He's on dirty unicorn right now.
I just want something stable so he doesn't bother me lol.
I'm on a kitkat ROM myself..are they stable on a s3?
If everyone could just recommend a 4.4 ROM and a 4.3 ROM so I can look at them instead of reading thru all 50 ROMs with 1000 posts.. I'd prefer it NOT to be a TW ROM. Battery life is most important of course.

All are pretty stable but unfortunately this site shuts down any ROM recommendation threads as it can lead to pointless debates about which ROM is the best.
We don't allow comparison threads as they often lead to arguments and fighting among the users.
The best place to find out about a specific ROM is in that ROM's thread. Read what other users are saying, bugs they are reporting and feedback to and from the developer(s). We encourage you to check out the different ROM threads and to find one or two that you like, flash them and run them. If you like one stick with it. If not, flash a different one.
Or if you are like the majority of us XDA users you'll flash one, run it for a week and then flash another, and another, and another, and another.
Thank you,
Rwilco12
