Help me -noob questions - HTC One S

Hello xda. My friend recently ordered an one s and he asked me to make his phone good. I'm from another forum(u8800pro) and i post ROMs there so i don't have the time to work on this phone and I'm asking you here.
1)Is there any 4.2 ROM? If so is it stable?
2)In case he wants 4.1.x what's the best option for a guy that knows NOTHING about android?
3)Which is the best kernel for 4.1.x?
4)Which is the most stable ROM for daily use and hard gaming anyway?
5)How to root it?
6)Which recoveries are available for this phone?
7)What is the ROM flashing method for this phone and what is hboot?
8)What is needed to flash a ROM on the phone exactly as it comes out of the box?
Any help is appreciated because the phone will arrive in 2-3 days.
-UPDATE its an S4
Thanks in advance!

To answer any of this you first need to know if it's a S3 or S4.
Because this determines which ROMs or recoverys you can flash.

CM10 would be your best bet then and you will need to fastboot the boot.img and TWRP is the best recovery to use.

I'll never understand the deal with CM.
Personally I dont like it at all. There seems to always be at least one important feature not working properly.
I go against the stream and say, if hes not used to android I think rooted stock with maybe a different kernel would be more than enough for him.
The only downside with stock rom is that it lacks features for the more advanced users (like the majority on this site ).
Other than that the stock is actually pretty damn good.
Its by far the best stock rom Ive encountered, but this is my first HTC device though (unless you count my old QTek 9100 )

Which ROM ???

How do i choose a suited ROM for my desire S ?
There are so many.
It depends on the IMEI or something else ?
Also , whats a "prerooted" ROM ( different from "normal" ROM ? )
Grts
Answer to your last question: a pre-rooted ROM is a custom ROM which already provide root access. If you're unfamiliar to the term root, you should do a little more reading before flashing a custom rom to your device.
Just ensure that you've read through many of the threads available to anyone on this forum, and you'll have a smooth sailing through the seas of custom ROMs.
Your IMEI number doesn't matter.
Try Endymion, it's probably the best (personal opinion) Sense based ROM in the development section.
Loving my Desire S since rooting and flashing a custom ROM, like a new phone

Flinnys CM 11 alpha 3. Very fast and stable after my opinion. There are just some bugs with the camera(video) and bluetooth but check it out anyways.
Hello guys i didnt want to create a new thread.
My mother has a Desire S and is absolutely casual user, the only thing that is important is long battery life and that all features work (No ROMs with Camera bugs and so on pls)
She does not need Tablet Features and whatsoever.
Currently her phone runs MIUI 2.### which is a battery eater and quiet strange.
Do you have any ROM to suggest? Just a very stable, reliable Android with much battery life?
Thx for your help !

Hey guys!
Just got a second-hand Desire S.
I am looking for am advice about a custom ROM with Sense.
What is the highest version of Android with the highest version of Sense available? The best would be: Sense 5.5 with Kit-kat I think.
Any suggestions? Would like a "stable" version if possible.

[Q] Which rom is the best for my rooted phone?

Hi, I have recently rooted my Desire S, with revolutionary, clockwork etc, and I currently ported this rom HTC_DESIRE_S_2.3.5-2.10.401.4.zip
Everything is working just fine, but theoretically, when I decide to port a new rom, how would I know which will work, and which won't?
Actually, I'm waiting until ICS is released for desire s, so I can find it and install it...
Are there any methods to identify which rom would be compatible?
Thank you!

hey mate
your're actually talking about two different things: porting a ROM and flashing a ROM.
Porting means, you take a ROM from another device and modify it so it works on your device too.
flashing means, you take a ROM which is already optimized for your device
and install it, so you wipe the stock firmware and get a custom rom.
which of the two things is what you want to do? i think its just the flashing.
so you can take any ROM from the "development section", and if you follow the guides that you can find everywhere here im sure you will be succesfull and happy with it.
bytheway
there is no "best" ROM for your device. it all depends on what you need and want. there are alot sense 3.5 Roms, Endymion 3.4 is the one i would recommend. you can also try AOSP ROMs (android open source project, means no sense), cyanogenmod7 could be a good first choice. and you can also try ics right now, since there are at least 3 (?) ICS AOSP ROMs right now:
CM9, Virtuous Quattro RC3, IceColdSandwich
have fun!
Yes I meant "flashing" a rom
Thanks for all the information. That's the general idea I have as well, however I had this question because after I flashed another rom (official rom through htc sync - that could have been the problem) over my first flashed one , the phone was "bricked"....

i would never recommend to flash an official ROM over a custom ROM. But anyways, i think if you would have done a full wipe before flashing the official rom you wouldnt have got a "you call it brick"
a real "BRICK" is a useless phone, where there is no way to use it again.if there is still a way, its no brick.. but who cares about definitions
I recommend you to flash the ROMs only through recovery mode. AND ALWAYS DO A FULL WIPE BEFORE FLASHING A NEW ROM. very important
and dont forget to backup as always
Yes you are absolutely right. I'll have that in mind the next time I'll decide to flash a new one
Yeah the device wasn't completely useless, it hanged at boot...but I guess that was due to not following the right procedure as you previously described..
Thanks eyahl
Start flashing different roms and trying them for a day or two. First
Sens 3.0 and then sense 3.5 roms to see the difference. Only then you will know which rom is best for you.
+1 for Endymion 3.4,
+1 for Endymion

edymion, will try it

Each ROM type suits different personal tastes, so there isn't an 'best' ROM for everyone. Trial and Error which ones suit you!
General opinions:
Stock
Pro: Straight from HTC, *newest kernel/drivers*, least likely to have compatibility issues.
Cons: HTC is slow to release updates, and sense interface is usually resource hungry.
Sense-like
Pro: usually keep the Sense interface, but custom kernals offer speed / various other improvements.Runnymead versions are kernals ported across from HTC Sensation (which offer some of the goodies like Beats Audio etc. that were not originally developed for Saga.
Cons: Sense interface is resource hungry...
CyanogenMod based
Pro: offer lots of customisations
Cons: not the most user friendly
AOSP
Pro: Roms from the android source, usually less resource hungry, so lighter and faster.
Cons: Obviously, no sense.
ICS Alpha/Beta
Not strictly a new category, but builds from the new Android 4.0 (ICS).
Currently some things (like camera) isn't fully working yet.
Note: new Desire S may suffer from camera/video lag bug with non-stock / non-sense ROMs, this is due to HTC putting in new hardware / driver into the new DS phones and the other kernels not reflecting this change yet.
Personally, I use SenseMOD Lite V1.2 build 2 as it is one of the few AOSP like builds that don't have the camera bug. Oxygen would have been best choice for me but unfortunately camera bug makes it unusable.
Hey guys. I don't want to drive over your feet, but I think the OP is already very satisfied with all those replies. specially the post above is really trying to help, but you spend much time to type what has already been written on the first page.

[Q]How to restock Asus tf101

I rooted my tf101 9.2.1.17-20120312 with viperMod. Then installed recovery installer and can now access recovery. I want to try some custom roms but I want to know how i can restore my tab in case i don't like the rom or something goes wrong during flash.
I downloaded US_epaduser9.2.1.17UpdateLauncher.zip from asus site since my tab seems to be running Us version of rom. My question is is this zip recovery flashable? Or is there some other way I can restock?
I should mention i got my tab in mint condition but without original case so i don't know what serial number it has. I've attacked a photo with what it says on the box.
Any help would be apreciated. I don't want to end up with a shiny new brick.
According to the box, your serial is BC0, which means its an SBK2 device. So you cant use NVFlash.
Its not much of a big deal as long as you dont **** up the recovery and the android OS at the same time.
As far as restoring... Just take a backup of your current rom in CWM before flashing anything new.
And I suggest you skip ASUS's builds. Just grab a custom rom instead, they are 100 times better in all areas.
Thanks for the quick reply. I saw there are plenty of custom roms for the tf101. Which one is the more stable? I used aokp for a galaxy tab 7 i owned until recently but it wasn't quite suited for daily use.
Hi Saav,
I can also recommend this to read:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22465766
I like the revolver rom of gnufabio 4.0.0. It is still in beta but works really wel for me.
And Goatshocker is correct, the serial number is for SBK2, so nvflash is not an option for you.

They hold a generally equal stability. What matters is the kernel youre using. guevenors kernel is aparantly very stable. I dont know myself, Im running the kernel included in EOS build 19 still, which is stable for me.
I suggest you try out the roms for yourself and pick the one you like best

Yes if you want to go back to stock, just flash the official firmware from Asus in recovery.

[Q] Still on stock 4.1.2, any better option/ROM available yet?

Hi, I'm kinda new here, bought the tablet only few days ago and didn't play with it too much,
Have updated to the latest official version (4.1.2) and rooted.
I'm on N8013.
I saw the half-way leaked version of the kitkat on the general post but it says no word if it fits for anything else but N8000.
I don't really care for Kitkat but 4.1.2 is too old..
Any stable release / ROM with TW for a newer version? (I prefer stock)
kinda hard to tell since most of the posts are from 2012 and I have never been to any of them.. you probably know better than I do.
Thanks !
The leaked rom works fine on my N8013, I didn't even have to wipe out my device, kept all my apps from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2. Unfortunately, there is no other versions of Samsung's rom between 4.1.2 and 4.4.2. If you really want to upgrade, I think the leaked rom works fine. As long as you have made a backup in some recovery, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

The leaked KitKat verion is for testing purpose only, many features disabled.
Stock or close to stock ROM is available, ARHD is the one.
I'm using ARHD for years now & it's very stable.
Read carefully & understand everything on the ARHD thread before doing anything.

All the features work. You can flash a deodexed rom, install some mods, and you are good to go

Hmm ARHD = revolution?
If so it is also 4.1 so it ain't worth switching. ?
If not please link me..
And about the leaked 4.4.. what do you mean not all features are enabled?
Could you say which? And deodexed run over the disability? Is it stable enough?
I really have no time and effort to fight with mess and bugs..
Thank you for your tips

ARHD = Android Revolution HD
ARHD is the best close to stock 4.1.2 ROM I've ever use. (I have HTC Sensation & GT-N8000 all using ARHD)
Right now there is no Stock KitKat for N8000/8013/8010/8020
All you can get is LEAKED version of KitKat which is only for TESTING purpose, so don't expect to get all features working.
Some "testers" said they get all features working, some said WiFi is not working.
I will not recommend you to flash it, at least wait for official release.
Official KitKat release may be very different / may have features not in the Leaked TEST ROM
[GT-N8000][Leaked firmware] N8000XXUDND5 (Android 4.4) - Open Europe (OXA) [26-04-14]
NOTE:
Mike, the ARHD chef, said he will cook KitKat ROM as soon as the official release out on the net
Lord Boeffla also said that he will make KitKat version of Boeffla Kernel as soon as the official release is there.

It is a great ROM , it seems that on my N8013 if you take away the fact that my WiFi does some 'lags' everything works simply fine.

Please tell us your ability and experience flashing roms? Using cwm/ twrp recovery. Do you know and understand adb? Have you ever flashed a device and know how to backup before doing so?
The above efforts MUST be something you need to understand Before you Flash anything.
The note tablet is to expensive to go flashing without knowing how to get back and recover if you have issues.
With the above said.. The issue with the stock 8000 rom and the leak is Bootloader . Changes your tablet info to look likes its a 8000 instead of 8xxx . In the past when the Stock firmware for your device is released you have been able to get back to the correct version for your device. BUT WELL BUT We or nobody can tell you for sure..
Again read read and think . Most important read the threads and post from people who have went back to 4.1 stock for there Device.
I know my post may sound Confusing. If so DO NOT FLASH your device.IF you know all of this already Sorry for the post. Just dont wanna see a help I'M

I understand..
For me with the Note 10.1 and even my note 2 phone. I bought it for the s-pen capability. For me i have tried many roms and yes each has there own advantages. Not saying nothing bad about any of them. As i have took some small pieces from some Like frame work changes for my Slightly modified Stock. But I still think for the Note line .. Stock is the best solution for those who bought it for the s-pen and muli window Real work able tablet i think Stock or VERY Near is Best.
The Developers on the note devices have much more to deal with then many others due to the S-pen features and they are awesome at it .
Have installed the Gnabo ROM.. Looks cool.. Let's hope it won't makes me troubles

new to idol 3 quick question

Hi guys looking at getting the idol 3 5.5 just a couple of questions
Can someone tell me what the different model numbers are as far as I know there are 4 different variants of the idol 3
Also I'm looking to keep to a stock rom based rom which one is best to use or should I just root and stick to the stock rom anyways as all I really want to do is remove system apps I don't use and install viper4android lol
Thanks
Hello,
The problem is with the 5 models (6045I,6045Y,6045O,6045K,6045B they are 99% same, i think the diference is in kernel/radio/dual sim).
so there are lot of custom roms, but the problem is, that they are only builds by fans and not really a developers (except "Unjustified Dev" which is the only one real developer here so far). so they just build the rom and cannot do much about the problems. This ends in many builds (CM, PAC, LEWA... ) all are CM based builds, there are also a lot of kernels,. the problem is nobody really knows what are the diference.
For someone is kernel " x" working for someone not etc.
So thats the reason i am on stock.
I managed to find, that TCL i806 is alcatel idol3 (TCL is the owner company of Alcatel). So i get the stock firmware for i806 and made some mods. Its probably the nearest to stock firmware. The only problem is, that it includes kernel, thats 100% working with 6045Y. You can try to boot it on your own device, but for suer to flash (not boot) TWRP recovery, make full backup and also download the other kernels, so you can swap them in TWRP.
If all things go well we should have android Marshmallow start rolling out in june.

You can try to boot it on your own device, but for suer to flash (not boot) TWRP recovery, make full backup and also download the other kernels, so you can swap them in TWRP.
If all things go well we should have android Marshmallow start rolling out in june.

thanks for the reply well ive ordered it and its coming tomorrow its the 6045Y version so am i right in saying i should be able to just install your rom no problem and i dont need to install the different kernel
also what kernel are you using as ill properly use the same one lol
sorry one last question do i unlock my bootloader as well before root ect
thanks again for your help
6045Y is same model as mine. So unlock bootloader and then flash TWRP recovery, make backup, flash my rom. I allready included overclocked ARDE team kernel. If you have some problems (freezes, reboots) then probably your SoC isnt capable of holding the OC, then just launch the kernel adiutor and lower the frquencies.

thanks will do is your rom the latest version that alcatel has released (in other words should i be able to flash your rom from any version of stock thats on my phone) and great ill just flash your rom and happy days lol
does xposed work ok on the idol 3 and if so what version do we flash
again thanks for your help carnt wait till tomorrow now
i dont use xposed, but should work without problems (have tried months ago). and also download mobile uphrade q v. 5.0.6 (its also on my google drive). its the alcatel app to get you to stock if something goes wrong. Also in my unlock bootloader thread is a bat file which makes all partition backup of your phone.
