[Q] Which rom is the best for my rooted phone? - HTC Desire S

Hi, I have recently rooted my Desire S, with revolutionary, clockwork etc, and I currently ported this rom HTC_DESIRE_S_2.3.5-2.10.401.4.zip
Everything is working just fine, but theoretically, when I decide to port a new rom, how would I know which will work, and which won't?
Actually, I'm waiting until ICS is released for desire s, so I can find it and install it...
Are there any methods to identify which rom would be compatible?
Thank you!

hey mate
your're actually talking about two different things: porting a ROM and flashing a ROM.
Porting means, you take a ROM from another device and modify it so it works on your device too.
flashing means, you take a ROM which is already optimized for your device
and install it, so you wipe the stock firmware and get a custom rom.
which of the two things is what you want to do? i think its just the flashing.
so you can take any ROM from the "development section", and if you follow the guides that you can find everywhere here im sure you will be succesfull and happy with it.
bytheway
there is no "best" ROM for your device. it all depends on what you need and want. there are alot sense 3.5 Roms, Endymion 3.4 is the one i would recommend. you can also try AOSP ROMs (android open source project, means no sense), cyanogenmod7 could be a good first choice. and you can also try ics right now, since there are at least 3 (?) ICS AOSP ROMs right now:
CM9, Virtuous Quattro RC3, IceColdSandwich
have fun!

Yes I meant "flashing" a rom
Thanks for all the information. That's the general idea I have as well, however I had this question because after I flashed another rom (official rom through htc sync - that could have been the problem) over my first flashed one , the phone was "bricked"....

i would never recommend to flash an official ROM over a custom ROM. But anyways, i think if you would have done a full wipe before flashing the official rom you wouldnt have got a "you call it brick"
a real "BRICK" is a useless phone, where there is no way to use it again.if there is still a way, its no brick.. but who cares about definitions
I recommend you to flash the ROMs only through recovery mode. AND ALWAYS DO A FULL WIPE BEFORE FLASHING A NEW ROM. very important
and dont forget to backup as always

Yes you are absolutely right. I'll have that in mind the next time I'll decide to flash a new one
Yeah the device wasn't completely useless, it hanged at boot...but I guess that was due to not following the right procedure as you previously described..
Thanks eyahl

Start flashing different roms and trying them for a day or two. First
Sens 3.0 and then sense 3.5 roms to see the difference. Only then you will know which rom is best for you.

+1 for Endymion 3.4,

+1 for Endymion
Swyped from my Desire S using XDA Premium

+1 Endymion
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

edymion, will try it

+1266592.23 for Endymion

Each ROM type suits different personal tastes, so there isn't an 'best' ROM for everyone. Trial and Error which ones suit you!
General opinions:
Stock
Pro: Straight from HTC, *newest kernel/drivers*, least likely to have compatibility issues.
Cons: HTC is slow to release updates, and sense interface is usually resource hungry.
Sense-like
Pro: usually keep the Sense interface, but custom kernals offer speed / various other improvements.Runnymead versions are kernals ported across from HTC Sensation (which offer some of the goodies like Beats Audio etc. that were not originally developed for Saga.
Cons: Sense interface is resource hungry...
CyanogenMod based
Pro: offer lots of customisations
Cons: not the most user friendly
AOSP
Pro: Roms from the android source, usually less resource hungry, so lighter and faster.
Cons: Obviously, no sense.
ICS Alpha/Beta
Not strictly a new category, but builds from the new Android 4.0 (ICS).
Currently some things (like camera) isn't fully working yet.
Note: new Desire S may suffer from camera/video lag bug with non-stock / non-sense ROMs, this is due to HTC putting in new hardware / driver into the new DS phones and the other kernels not reflecting this change yet.
Personally, I use SenseMOD Lite V1.2 build 2 as it is one of the few AOSP like builds that don't have the camera bug. Oxygen would have been best choice for me but unfortunately camera bug makes it unusable.

Hey guys. I don't want to drive over your feet, but I think the OP is already very satisfied with all those replies. specially the post above is really trying to help, but you spend much time to type what has already been written on the first page.
I appreciate your intend to help, bit I think the OP isn't gonna read this anymore..
Btw: endy!...

Which ROM ???

How do i choose a suited ROM for my desire S ?
There are so many.
It depends on the IMEI or something else ?
Also , whats a "prerooted" ROM ( different from "normal" ROM ? )
Grts
Answer to your last question: a pre-rooted ROM is a custom ROM which already provide root access. If you're unfamiliar to the term root, you should do a little more reading before flashing a custom rom to your device.
Just ensure that you've read through many of the threads available to anyone on this forum, and you'll have a smooth sailing through the seas of custom ROMs.
Your IMEI number doesn't matter.
Try Endymion, it's probably the best (personal opinion) Sense based ROM in the development section.
Loving my Desire S since rooting and flashing a custom ROM, like a new phone

Flinnys CM 11 alpha 3. Very fast and stable after my opinion. There are just some bugs with the camera(video) and bluetooth but check it out anyways.
Hello guys i didnt want to create a new thread.
My mother has a Desire S and is absolutely casual user, the only thing that is important is long battery life and that all features work (No ROMs with Camera bugs and so on pls)
She does not need Tablet Features and whatsoever.
Currently her phone runs MIUI 2.### which is a battery eater and quiet strange.
Do you have any ROM to suggest? Just a very stable, reliable Android with much battery life?
Thx for your help !

Hey guys!
Just got a second-hand Desire S.
I am looking for am advice about a custom ROM with Sense.
What is the highest version of Android with the highest version of Sense available? The best would be: Sense 5.5 with Kit-kat I think.
Any suggestions? Would like a "stable" version if possible.

[Q] Best firmware for SGS

Hi,
I was using SGS I 9000 and with the official 2.3.3 DDJV6 version which is very very slow. After that i have tried so many leaked firmwares but unfortunately none of them works well for me..none of them are stable & bugfree.
Right now i am using DDJV9 with voodoo lagfix. This is also not running effeciently..phone gots very very hot upto 55C.
Kindly help me reviving my sgs experince. Please kindly also share the link also for the same.
Thanks alot in advance.
No roms not even OEM roms are free of bugs mate, try flashing some other custom roms until u find the one that suits ur needs.
I agree none of them is bug free. But Whichever leaked firmware i have used is not not even stable. I just want stable & fast firmware.
People kindly help.

Thanks..
Right now i am little confused. Till now i have only checked the different firmwares not tried any ROM.
Are firmware and ROM are 2 different things or same? Sorry if it is too basic..
Firmware and ROM are sort of intertwined. The firmware mostly relates to the underlying infrastructure that the ROM depends upon. Things like the kernel and radio. The ROM is the actual implementation of the OS. When you flash new firmware, you also get a new ROM along with it.
Some custom ROMs, such as Darky's ROM, are very closely related to the stock ROM, and have mostly performance and cosmetic changes. Other ROMs such as Mintberry MIUI and Onecosmic are quite significantly different from any of the stock ROMs.
They also depend on particular parts of the stock firmware. Onecosmic and MIUI both require gingerbread bootloaders to have been previously installed from a stock firmware package.
If you want my two cents on what to use, I am currently using Onecosmic RC2.11 (waiting for the phone to charge to full, then going to install RC3) and it is excellent. It is based on Ice Cream Sandwich, it runs quickly, and it looks beautiful.

Help me -noob questions

Hello xda. My friend recently ordered an one s and he asked me to make his phone good. I'm from another forum(u8800pro) and i post ROMs there so i don't have the time to work on this phone and I'm asking you here.
1)Is there any 4.2 ROM? If so is it stable?
2)In case he wants 4.1.x what's the best option for a guy that knows NOTHING about android?
3)Which is the best kernel for 4.1.x?
4)Which is the most stable ROM for daily use and hard gaming anyway?
5)How to root it?
6)Which recoveries are available for this phone?
7)What is the ROM flashing method for this phone and what is hboot?
8)What is needed to flash a ROM on the phone exactly as it comes out of the box?
Any help is appreciated because the phone will arrive in 2-3 days.
-UPDATE its an S4
Thanks in advance!

To answer any of this you first need to know if it's a S3 or S4.
Because this determines which ROMs or recoverys you can flash.

CM10 would be your best bet then and you will need to fastboot the boot.img and TWRP is the best recovery to use.

I'll never understand the deal with CM.
Personally I dont like it at all. There seems to always be at least one important feature not working properly.
I go against the stream and say, if hes not used to android I think rooted stock with maybe a different kernel would be more than enough for him.
The only downside with stock rom is that it lacks features for the more advanced users (like the majority on this site ).
Other than that the stock is actually pretty damn good.
Its by far the best stock rom Ive encountered, but this is my first HTC device though (unless you count my old QTek 9100 )

[Q] Best daily ROM?

Hi, Had a HTC One X for a while now but recently got stolen so now i am back on my Desire S. I haven't been modding or flashing this phone in ages and haven't really followed all the threads.
Is there any one that can tell me what ROM works best for daily use at the moment. It is currently running on Fallout but i saw that hasn't been updated in a long time soo i think it is time to upgrade?
Any suggestions?
And yes i am a lazy person sorry
When will people learn?!
We don't do "best rom" threads on xda.
you must try SVHD 2.1.0 rom its stable and smooth , or ICS DS v8.0 final
The best ROM is the one you like the most.
I've gone from GB to HTC ICS to cm10. I've tried some custom ICS Roms but like the look, feel and functionality of Jellybean.
Some great work is being done on cm10.2 right now and hopefully soon cm11 KitKat. Fingers crossed.
The one I keep going back to is blindndumbs cm10.1 but development may have stopped.
Do a nandroid and flash away. See what works best for you. You won't know unless you try.
I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm italian.

Sensation XE Stock laggy, whats the right thing to do?

Hi, I have the following problem - My friend got an old HTC Sensation XE, with stock ROM, not rooted, bootloader locked and so on. She got it from friend because her phone died and she needed some fair replacement. She have never done anything like rooting, flashing ROMs, nothing like that. But the problem is that the phone has become laggy, I am very supprised because its on stock rom and when I used to use my Sensation, when it still was a flagship and well after One X was available, it it was okay, snappy and everything as you all know it was a HTC's flagship phone and HTC would not push anything that would make it laggy, I did factory reset and such, but that did not realy help. I in other hand have done fairy bit of rooting, flashing ROMs, custom kernels and such, so I think that flashing some custom ROM would help this problem, and as I have moved from my Sensation and anything related to that I am out of the loop and have no idea what is the best rom to use or maybe a kernel. So I am asking you what to do or flash, I need something stable and fast, stable because phone will be used by person who does not quite understand tech and fast - to resolve the problem of not able to use it comfortably.
