External modems WORKS ??? - Galaxy Tab 7.7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you think tab P6800 may work with external 3G modems ?
I tried with ZTE MF190 modem (thru OTG cable) with the good APN settings but it did NOT work..
Any one comments pls..
For the pp who wonders why I am so stupid despite P6800 has got internal modem;
The reason is that, when a person imports or purchases a device from abroad with internal modem, its IMEI nr MUST be registered to the Govermantal Tele-Comunication authority in order to use it.
This also requires around 60 USD Tax but other than needs a citizen who made entry to the country in the last 30 days.
In addition this is limited right which can only be used by a person one time in two years..
What country? Turkiye...

I think it can work
Download PPP Widget from the Play Store and go to the developers website for some assistance in case your 3g modem does not work right away

[Q] Wifi only model (GT-P6210) GSM/cellular capability?

Does the galaxy tab plus wifi model (GT-P6210) have GSM capability?
I've been searching/reading for the last few hours, but I haven't found a definitive product manual/spec sheet that answers my question... a lot of the spec sheets online have conflicting info.
basically, i'd like to get a tab+, and run it as a wifi tablet around the house, but also be able to run it through the tmobile voice plan as a cell phone (NOT DATA PLAN) after rooting/installed sim card. samsungs website only lists GSM band support for the GT-P6200 model, so i wasn't sure if the antenna was in the wifi only model (GT-P6210) and disabled, or absent completely.
sorry for being a noob about the devices' capability. i have genuinely searched around this forum and dealers websites but would appreciate confirmation from somebody that has actually done this (or something similar)
thx
No. It does not. That's why it is called wifi only...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
thanks, thats what i initially assumed, but some tmobile tech support was trying to convince me otherwise and i didnt want to drop money for one without confirmation.
It has no cellular hardware. You can set up a pbx if you want to make calls over wifi, but that's about it. I just tether it to my phone over wifi

[Q] Help with Roms and PS3 Tethering

Hey Yall, long time XDA follower and user (HTC Shadow2007), first time "really" posting.
I, for the love of GOD, cannot find out just why I'm not able to use any of my rom's built in tethering for my T-Mobile branded Sensation 4G. I been reading up on T-Mobile US's hidden APN on their network which disable's certain traffics. (Yes I know about spoofing UA Strings for desktops/laptops but this seems to be different, like they are disabling my connection to the PS3 only. In other words, it will find the AP (not ad-hoc) and but not allow for an internet connection.
Lately, I've been switching between CM9 stable(main) and Elegancis (Blitz_3.0.0) roms. I haven't superCID'd but I didn't think that it would've mattered because I don't think that I'm using an non-T-Mobile US build (it wouldn't work either way).
I wanted to stick it CM9 but for whatever reason it would allow me to update some market apps so for that reason and well as the tethering issue I've switched to Blitz's rom.
My kernel version may actually be outdated (even thought I don't think so)
KV
3.0.16-v1.5.2

The first flashing that I did was Revolutionary HD 6.6.7 (i think). It worked fine but had problems as well (not perfect ). I want to change my data plan to the T-Mobile nationwide unlimited 4G plan and save me $35 buck a month to tether my PS3 to my phone. (I can do it now.) To test to see if the rom would allow me access to tethering to my PS3, I switched my wife's sim card and mine to simulate the plan and the phone without having the plan active on my account and it's a no go. I switch the sim cards back, it works just fine. Now she can tether via her phone and via mine (if sim cards are switched) to multiple computers and to the wii.
IF ANYONE HAS THE ABILITY TO HELP, PLEASE PLEASE DO! :crying:

Thank you for replying!
Well it worked one time a week ago with my wife's sim with WPA2. Since then I had already reverted back to CM9 which was my main rom until ... yesterday when I went through the process of putting all the applications from titanium backup on blitz's rom. I was going to change my plan till tomorrow from the $65 10GB tethering (before work discounts) to the $30 Unlimited Internet (before work discounts). I can try it with it being "open" later today but, i honestly don't think that its the problem because when I use my SIM card (the one with tethering enabled by T-Mobile) it connects with or without encryption.
Any ideas? Any roms that you know of that have wifi hotspot (not ad-hoc only) enabled by default? I looked into Grogg88 solution but, at this time it looks to be enabled in Elegancis' roms now anyway or am I missing something?!

Hi,
I have always tethered my tablet to my phone.
It worked both open and secure on Sense ROMS.
When I switched to CM 10, I could only connect with open. (but ,at least it works, which is all I care about )
I have not tried anything like a PS3,so ,I do not know what else to suggest.
Have you tried an app from the market?
I think "Barnacle" is good.

I understand! I have tried barnacle, wifi tether beta 3.2 (having trouble even getting to work), um... foxfi with and without additional supplimentary application, none of those actually give an Access Point, none ad-hoc (which the PS3 can only connect to). Hell I even have try usb to computer tethering (via bluetooth, wifi, and wired connections), create a computer "MiFi" hotspot and tried to get my PS3 to connect to that Access Point to no avail. Like I said though, all is good with my sim card but if I use my wife's which has Unlimited Nationwide 4G data service to test her data feature on my phone, past that 1st time I tried it with Blitz's rom last week... and the 2nd/last time I tried... this morning... its a no go.
I don't know what they are blocking my PS3... can they see its MAC address!? I can't imagine that the can really "see" it? Everything else works just fine on her phone tethering to it. Desktops, laptops, tablets,.... my 4 year old son's wii! IDk
I just want to not worry about data shortages (going over 10GB limit) and play Borderlands 2.... GOD IS THAT SO WRONG.
PS. I'm switching home internet providing... that one I had sucked (great speeds60mbps, too high $65-70monthly)... but I'm waiting for a deal in the area.
I'll try open though later. If you know anyone else to ask... tell them to please come to this thread!

4g LTE SD Card?

Just wondering if there is such a thing? We all have wifi tablets but i'd love to get an SD card that allowed you to insert your sim card into it that would allow you to essentially have a LTE tablet? a plus would be if it had 32gb of memory also
anything like this exists?
i dont know what came of it but TMoblie here in the UK when they first mentioned their 4g plans said there would be a sim/sdcard (i forget which) that would have a 4g chip and antenna or something in it to make 3g 4g... never heard of it since though
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
An interesting concept, but there's not a single mobile provider who's going to let it pass into retail sales. Because if we could turn our devices into 4G by means of an SDcard, they'd miss out on all the oncome from all of us paying for another new phone/tab.
Also, you'd need a 4G data plan, anyway.
Definitely a cool idea, but never heard/seen of one. I was in the AT&T store yesterday, they have an LTE wifi hotspot device that was pretty cool, only 49.00 and would accomplish the same thing...
The TF700 doesn't have any radios for 4g unless your saying those would come in the SD card. I know they make USB sticks that will pick up 3g / 4g (at least I think) so maybe something like that would work

Don't count on it. It's more than just a sim to make it work with 3/4G. You need at least an UMTS module and an extra antenna. You should have bought the LTE version instead - you will never get "native" 3/4G on your non-LTE transformer.

In theory this is possible - there exists an interface that's electrically equivalent to SD, but supports much more than memory cards. It's called SDIO (see wikipedia article, I can't include links). Since the transformer supports 4-bit SD interface, it automatically supports SDIO. The only problem is the drivers.
Here's where practical problems start. The Linux kernel includes very few drivers for SDIO devices. So even if such device exists, Android would not be able to support it.

You've probably solved this by now. I rooted my Evo 4G and use the Cyanomod 7.2 tethering feature. It works great. I use my sd slot for data2sd.
How did you resolve this?

ibiesio quick
That woukd be kinda cool, but I already pay for the fantastic privlege having (no to barely any) service for my phone (sprint. As someone who switched from verizon to sprint, DON'T. Huge mistake). My phone is the reason I dont take my tablet out of the house (where theres wifi) unless im going on a trip. I assume thats how it is for most people, which is why there most likley isn't a massive market for it. I could see it being useful to people who use tabs on the job and travel. Even then, nowadays theres wifi pretty much everywhere. The added security of 4g is a plus, though. VPNs are nice but are often slow and cause issues with google and such.

This product is hitting the market very soon... there are several articles already on this product.

For now you can use USB 3G modem. There is an application on the Google Play, that provides support for these modems. I have successfully tested it with Huawei E173u.

[Q] 2 week trip to Scotland - best prepaid options?

Hello all,
As the title states, I'm taking a two week trip to Scotland in August. I require "local" voice/text and internet (unlimited?) would be a HUGE plus (especially for gps use).
T-mobile seems to have a $42-something plan which includes all the above, but I would be upset if my phone didn't work well with it for some reason when we landed. I'm currently on AT&T running Cyanogenmod 3.0.66? and Slimbean 4.2 and very willing to reflash to more appropriate roms.
My questions are:
1. Is it reasonable for me to bring my S2 and use a prepaid SIM, taking the risk something may not work? If so, what kernal/rom is best for Europe (say T-Mobile, etc) ?
2. Does anyone have a better option? This is my first time abroad and I'm open to advice.
I haven't been on xda for a while, so I apologize if this information is generally available. I did attempt to search but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Please help this old man!
Side question: Anyone have a good experience to report with an offline gps app?
Use a rom which supports GSM so go into settings mobile network and then network settings and see if you have WCDMA / GSM. That means it will work here. Also the best and cheapest sim card to get here is a Giffgaff one.
Also, regarding Gps, it's Scotland... You won't get lost.
Giffgaff give for £10 unlimited texts, 250 or 500min call and 1gb data... So just use data with Gps.
There is a cut down version of that for £5 but I'd rather have more Internet to use maps.
You can convert the £££ into $$$

If T-Mobile in Scotland uses the same frequencies as here in the USA, it would be reasonable to use the stock tmobile UVMC6 plus skyrocket JB kernel plus either UCMC1 radio OR UVMB1(blaze 4G radio)
Here's the rom,I used it on my rocket for sometime
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2344942
But you have to flash a skyrocket kernel to correct screen rotation..Mohan has one in the dev section
Search for UVMB1 radio for data on AWS at HSPA...I don't think the Scottish have LTE on T-Mobile yet or even UCMC1 would work on their data if the use 1700/2100 AWS on LTE...
Have a nice trip...Scotland is a beautiful country...

I agree, however will this work on my current AT&T provider until I land in Scotland? This is my primary cellphone.
The rom, yes...
The radio, if you use LTE here, it will not work on UVMB1, but HSPA is ok
My plan would be
1.Flash the T-Mobile rom now
2.Flash the skyrocket kernel now
3.Leave your radio alone..
4.Have few T-Mobile radios like UVMB1 on your sd, flash it on board at the airplane do it would be ready there...
Of course that's if you choose to go with tmobile path...

Thank you for your quick reply. I briefly looked into Giffgaff, and it seems like they charge for anything not between other Giffgaff users. This would make calling hotels, etc still costly. Plus, it looks like I need a UK postcode to receive a SIM card.
Also, we plan on doing some driving all throughout Scotland and the GPS option would greatly decrease any stress related to traveling, but thank you for your reassurance! :fingers-crossed:

Use the £5 or £10 goody bag. You can call anything in UK. Landlines, Mobiles and all. They don't care.
You can get the sims at shops too. Just the websites says post code.
250 or 500min is to landlines and whatever. The Giffgaff to Giffgaff ones are free.

It is good to research on network options while you're here...But probably you'll find a cell phones shop in the airport and buy a SIM from there..
Go to Wikipedia and read about their network bands, if they are compatible with AT&T specifications, you might need nothing done and your phone would work right away as soon as you put the new SIM and setup the correct apn...Of course that's if your phone is already unlocked..
By the way sir, this is the general section, all questions should be in Q/A forum...

[Q] Nexus 5 on Sprint - tether/hotspot?

Hello, for the lucky folks who have already received their Nexus 5, has anyone been able to enable tethering/hotspot (without additional charges from Sprint)? Since root is available, hopefully hotspot is just a flash away - but I couldn't find any relevant thread in the Android development forum (or in the Q&A forum)
Edit: Thanks @ss4rob for trying this (link) out on the Sprint N5, and reporting that it works. And of course, thanks to @yakman66 for suggesting the fix in that original thread for the T-Mo

As suggested above, I added a new entry to the "global" table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0 in the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db file. I copied it over to my Mac using ES File Explorer in root mode, and copied it back after editing in sql, making sure to preserve rw-rw---- and system:system attributes, and then restarted. I didn't have to edit any other settings - done. Thanks!

There is no 100% clarification either way as of yet. Here is a guy that claims he activated his 32GB N5 on Sprint:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47123506&postcount=97
The theory has been since Sprint is only selling the 16GB N5, only those MEIDs are currently in Sprint's database. However, it seems some 32GB N5's are going through as well.
I'll have a SIM from Sprint on Wednesday and try to activate my 32GB N5 online. It that doesn't work, I'll be hitting up 1 of 3 local Sprint stores.
I cant get usb or wifi to work. Wifi the devices connect however unable to go to any sites. Anyone had better luck?
According the recent updates to this thread, other users are reporting that they are able to activate 32GB versions on Sprint now.
Does Wi-Fi Tether for root work or does the built in tethering option work?
I'm wondering the same.. don't want to sell my S4 until I know I can tether with the nexus 5 which is out for delivery at this moment. .woohoo!!! I'm going to use my S4 sim to activate my 32gb nexus 5... I heard it will work.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I managed to activate my 32gb last night with sprint chat support. First thing... Go to settings and manually choose LTE mode. Mine said LTE, but it was not actually chosen until I chose it manually. Then put in your Sim and get on chat with sprint. When you give them the imei number... Also give them the serial number from the box... Not the serial number from in settings. They will figure it all out from there. I had to program my phone.. Setting the mdn and msid manually...but only because the LTE wasn't turned on originally.
PS... After the programming... It will change to global mode... So you may have to set it back to LTE one more time.

same here.... my Nexus 7 shows "connected" (to the hotspot from my N5), and gets an IP address too, but the wifi icon on the Nexus 7 stays gray (doesn't become blue to show data transfer) - and I have no internet access.
Crap!
Getting same results here. Does rooting solve this issue? Any help would be appreciated.
Rooting in itself won't do anything - till somebody can figure out what files need to be modified to make it work.
I did what they said to do in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512674
It worked perfectly for me. I believe the instructions on what to do were on page 7.
Edit: I'll just post what he said to do here. I figure that will be easier.
I have the T-mobile $30 unlimited prepaid plan and I ran into the tethering block after getting my Nexus 5.
"I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.
I hope this helps."

I copied it over to my Mac using ES File Explorer in root mode, and copied it back after editing in sql, making sure to preserve rw-rw---- and system:system attributes, and then restarted. I didn't have to edit any other settings - done. Thanks!
is there any free apps taht can edit the file?
