[Q] Replace LCD Digitizer Screen Display Skyrocket - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi All,
I am new to the forums. I recently dropped my Skyrocket and the LCD screen is cracked badly and wont even display anything. I believe the phone still works because I can hear it power up and down, I hear text messages come in and phone calls. I am going to try to follow the instructions on this page ( and I have seen some youtube videos) but are there any tips you guys can give me before I go through with this? I order the new screen and hopefuly it will be in by Jan 1 2013.

EDIT - 12/27/2012
MAKE SURE YOU CONSIDER THE http://www.cellphonerepairshop.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-front-screen-assembly-black/ OPTION FROM THE ABOVE LINK. You'll buy less parts in the long run and it is the same site the author used from the same above link.

How to get to the data from a dead display
Also, Is there some way to get to the data if the display isn't working? I have my phone set to prompt me when I connected a usb cable to a pc on what I want it to do so it doesnt automatically connect to a pc. I thought maybe through recovery mode but the videos I found online don't seem to help me and they seem to focus on custom ROMs, which I guess have a different interface.
I have the stock version from ATnT version 4.##.

After you replace the digitizer/screen all your data will still be there just like you had before the screen broke.

I don't know if I made a mistake or what but the part I received does not look like the part I need at step 10. Is this the part I need?
Please go to AMAZON . COM and then search for "i727 digitizer". Then click on " Original Genuine OEM Full LCD Display Monitor+Touch Screen Digitizer Assembly Fix For at&t Samsung i727 Galaxy S II Skyrocket by Samsung
174.99 new"
I am sorry but I can't post an external link since I am new to the forums.
I have the phone disassembled but I dont see the step to separate the broken LCD screen from the rest of the phone. Any tips you guys can give would be appreciated.

It looks like I need to buy a housing kit? As soon as I can I will link what I am talking about in here but I don't see it mentioned in the link from my first post.

You're paying more for just the digitizer than I paid to have Samsung replace it including shipping. It was 158 bucks to have them do it and they paid shipping both ways. Got it back 8 days from the day I mailed it. Just a thought.

My dad paid 275 for the screen to be repaired at a local shop that only takes cash. He doesnt understand that he got ripped off

Yeah, never thought to contact Samsung to have the phone repaired, probably for the same reason going to the dealership is usually more then doing the work yourself. I am in too deep to back down now since I already ordered the LCD / Digitizer. Hopefully this will be the last thing I have to get. I am paying about 25 bucks more then if I had gotten the part from http://www.cellphone-repair-shop.com which was mentioned in the WALK THROUGH LINK http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1540425&highlight=lcd+digitizer .
EDIT
DONT BUY THE BELOW DIGITIZER / FRONT HOUSING. BUY THE ENTIRE THING ASSEMBLED FROM THE WALK THROUGH LINK.
/EDIT
LCD / Digitizer = http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B008RSMSL6/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new
Front Housing = https://www.gounlock.com/details.php?itemId=7247
I should have just gotten this = http://www.cellphonerepairshop.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-front-screen-assembly-black/

Okay, so I think I am screwed. I swapped the housing and the screen. I turned on the device and I see the word samsung flash on my screen for a second, then nothing. The phone feels like it still works because I hear the bootup noise and I hear the message dings but just nothing on the screen. Any suggestions? I am ready to give up but wanted to see if you guys had any other tips.

When they repaired it, did they leave your data intact, or did they factory restore it?
I tried to go this route, and when I was setting up the repair claim I was told they factory restore it no matter if it's needed or not. I want to keep my messages, and other data intact.

Factory reset. The phone comes back to you just as a new one would. They flash the stock firmware to the phone. I sent mine in with AOKP still on it and they didn't seem to care but ymmv. Like xcraxydx said just back them up. I made a nand before I sent it out and saved it to the sdcard. Copied any media I wanted to keep to sdcard. Took out sdcard. Got phone back. Odined sk8ts recovery. Flashed nand. Took less then ten minutes.

You might be done with everything but...
Always check around for prices if you're strapped for cash. Generally you can find a cheaper price off a 10 minute Google search. Not just with this but with most everything that you can find online you can find good competition for it. I think the only exceptions to this is in Medicine and Automotive-relate parts (but the latter not so much)

I have no way to back them up. My screen is shot. When it first happened, I could see just a corner of the screen, and was able to pull my photos, and zip files off of my internal sd card by hooking it up to my computer. I was just barely able to do that. I was not able to navigate my phone to pull files using Root Explorer, or I would have pulled my messages, and other data. I called AT&T, and they can't pull that kind of data without the screen working.
This last weekend, I was able to get the screen off, but I might have fudged it. I watched the how-to on Youtube on taking it down for a screen replacement. Followed it to a T. The only thing is, when I removed the screen I noticed that there was a section that didn't come off with the screen, but I already had gouged it prying the screen off. This black section is in the center of the back plate, and wasn't present on the phone in the how-to video. I figured it came off with the other adhesive on the video, and mine didn't come off as easily as I didn't have high enough heat. I scraped it off as good as I could, but it's like a metal based adhesive underneath the black section. Did I mess it up, or did this have to come off for the screen replacement too?
It's not too much of a problem if I borked it. I kinda want to get the complete white housing that's in the link on the first post, but was trying to go the cheapest route if I could. $40 more isn't too bad for the complete setup if I have to, and it will have the chrome bezel.
Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi. I bought what I thought was a digitizer for the SGH-I727 but its just the front glass. Anyone know how to replace that? or is it even a part that can be replaced? on my phone the screen is cracked but still works.. and why would they sell just the glass no flex cable at all???

I think you have to use a heat gun to separate the glass.

HTC Sensation Screen replacement

Hey guys, New to the HTC sensation threads (its my Girlfriends phone)
Got her this phone about 6 months ago - 1 week after having it she dropped it and broke the digitizer anyway i got that fixed at my local phone shop with aftermarket digitizer - it worked well but you could tell it was not genuine.
anyway the other week i dropped it and broke the lcd screen yet the digitizer is fine and the phone is still 100% useable - except the display looks awful.
Does anyone know if this is an easy fix, is it worth fixing myself or taking it to the phone shop - Im embarrassed to go back and explain how it has broke again lol.... But i need to get it fixed, Im so close to having my wang removed by my girlfriend.
I was wondering whether or not HTC themselves would repair it ? and maybe replace the digitizer too, I dont mind paying the extra £££ for genuine parts and to be fixed by genuine HTC repairmen..
Any ideas how i can get out this mess ??
sorry for the long post.
Thanks
Off course HTC will repair it, but it'll take longer and probably charge you a lot more than what you can it fixed for.
Out of curiosity do you/your girl not put the phone in a case or something?

Haha, no i did not.. But as soon as i get it fixed im gunna invest in a bulletproof / bombproof carbon kevlar box and keep it locked inside it !!!
Was it bought through a carrier or sim free? Could always take it to your carrier and see what they suggest, although they're not normally the cheapest, but at least it should get done properly.
Yeah i got it through vodafone, I think i will give them a call and see what they say.
I was considering taking out insurance, then in a few days call them and tell them its broken, This is risky.... what do you think the odds are with me getting away with it ?
Do you think they would notice the aftermarket digitizer ? It is an exact replica with HTC on it....
these damn phones are so fragile.... I miss the old nokias
EDIT: Seen this and am tempted to get it and fix it myself..... http://www.lingosbox.com/product_info.php?language=en&currency=GBP&products_id=4769

No, you won't get away with it, and it's dishonest, anyway. Don't make yourself a criminal over a cell phone.
Now, that being said, check Ebay. There are lots of vendors in the UK and elsewhere (lots here in the US) that sell replacement screen kits, many of which include instructions and tools.
If you're handy with small tools and careful, you can do this yourself for a fraction of what it will cost you to have it done. I learned this when my kid's iPod battery died some years ago. They're not user replaceable, and Apple wanted some outrageous amount to do it, plus you had to send it away. I found a guy on line that sold batteries with tools and directions, and in 20 minutes, she was good as new.
Pays to do it yourself.

I totally agree with you !! i do not want to result to fraudulent behaviour... BUT, i dont want to pay approx £80 for parts and make the whole situation worse by possibly making more damage.
BUT i also dont want to pay approx £150 - £200 thinking i could of fixed it for much less by doing it myself.
I am good with stuff like that and am very gentle and careful..... but i dont believe in myself lol
I recently replaced mine. Its not too terribly hard to do. But you have to get it just right. Currently the digitizer is a bit slow and unresponsive at time but I think i didnt get it in there completely right. So I'm going to dissaimble is again today and get it suck in better and see of that helps

Since the Sensation screen is made by two different manufactures is it possible to mix and match them or do you have to replace the screen with the same one with phone came with? I have a Sensation that needs a LCD that I have not taken apart yet. Im wanting to get the better screen but im not sure if I can just put the better screen in it if thats not what it came with in the first place.

Well it's much better to replace it with the same display just to be sure it's going to work. There's also a side by side comparison of the Sharp and Acer (AUO) displays
That said, you can check what panel you have using the instructions on this thread:

The display on my phone is completely destroyed so I cant use terminal emulator to look it up :-(
EDIT: I was doing some research on the part numbers on the back of my screen and I found this thread...
http://pdaclub.pl/forum/sensation/dziwny-kurz-pod-dotykiem/
Post #8 has my same part number as mine (74h02057-00M) listed and in the same sentence AUO. So I have to assume it had the AUO screen which kinda sucks.

I dont even have a battery for it at the moment. When the battery arrives ill check it out. I have a feeling im not going to be able to get ADB working though.

Ill let you all know how it turns out....
Well I got the screen and digitizer from the link above today. Installed it and its perfectly fine. No lag anywhere, registers touch like the stock one did. The LCD panel seems to be the same quality as the AUO panel but thats fine with me since im pretty sure this phone came with the AUO from the factory. If you do decide to replace your screen and digitizer i suggest getting them as separate pieces. Having them attached to each other made it sorta difficult to get back together cleanly.

well the day after i got it fixed i knocked it off the side onto tiled flooring, it cracked the lcd but not the digitizer... so weird lol
anyway since then i have had some signal issues with my provider, they have established that the handset is faulty, they are collecting it to repair it.
I still havent had the screen fixed so im just going to see what happens when they go to repair it, Maybe they will think they broke the screen and fix it before returning it to me. Or maybe they wont.... if thats the case i will argue with them that it was fine before they took it away from me
after all, they must have 100's of these phones in boxes gathering dust in their warehouse(s) so a little arguing and im sure i will get it fixed / replaced.
Shhhhh Moms the word !!!

DO NOT try to replace the screen by yourself

I dropped my three-week old HTC one X on driveway by accident. The screen was shattered like a spiderweb. So I ordered a HTC One X screen/digitizer replacement from Amazon.
Today I tried to follow each step described in youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceHw6mezG60). In the last step when tried to separate glass screen from LCD, the LCD was ruined.
The glass and LCD were glued very tight. In my opinion, it is almost impossible to separate them safely. There are some differences in cables and connectors between the US version and the one showed in youtube (i assume it is the international version). There is one cable in the AT&T version that is very hard to disconnect.
Just to be clear, I consider myself very handy in electronics. I hope you can learn from my lesson. Tomorrow, I am going to send the phone to HTC repair center. Since I voided the warranty by disassembling it. I have no idea how much they will charge me.
i learned my lesson on this with a friends Inspire 4G...I have changed many many iphone screens, but the Inspire was a whole different ball game, and i would expect the One X to be even worse.
You are right, pay someone to do it.

Why don't you just order the whole LCD/digitizer/glass module? And of course the things gunna be hard to separate, you need to heat it up A LOT to loosen the glue

Agreed
I learned my lesson with iphone/ipad digatizers. Of course its less than half the price for just the digi but the lcd/digi combo is definitely the way to go. If you do get it separated you have a lot of cleaning to do to get all the old glue/glass off and they are much harder to get back together than you would think. Also invest in a good set of tools. The tools are garbage that they send with the parts.

A screen is about $50, and a screen/LCD combo is at least $180. If I knew it was so hard to separate, I would probably order the combo. Another concern is, I am not really sure that the LCD/glass combo from ebay is as good as that from HTC.
Fyi I had HTC replace my cracked screen. They also replaced the housing (new case, yay) for some reason. They had it for two days plus 3 days shipping time to get it back. Total cost was $220. I'm handy in electronics but seems this is the way to go for now based on costs for the full assembly. They really had great service through the process and you can track the repair online.

Oh how I wish I saw this thread before..
So I sure did break my digitizer.. and when I tried to replace it, it sure was glued to the LCD, and it did come apart lol. On the brighter side, I got a new digitizer and tools, I ordered an LCD but they shipped the wrong one.. but I will say this, I don't think it's that hard to take apart and reassemble.. aside from everything being glued together, and from what I gather the international version is not this way. Everything seems to make sense. I am starting to get lonely without her working. Sometimes I ADB into her just to say hi, mount my storage and make sure I got everything out just in case I butterfingers it and short something out. So aside from my agreement, here are the lessons I have learned.
1) Have a hair dryer handy, that glue is like concrete.
2) Don't just tug that battery cable out, the wires will come out of a socket (took 2 hours to get em back in)
3) For those of you whose digitizers and LCD's are broke.. "adb shell /system/bin/sdutil ums enable" will mount your storage so you can backup some stuff.
4) That torx screw driver you think you might need, haven't seen a torx screw yet, just loads of glue.
5) Take pictures of stuff before you disconnect it, and how you disconnected it for reference in reassembly.
6) This is the correct part # for the LCD 60H00664-01P, except no substitutes.
7) There are little crystal gluey things on the back of the digitizer that go through the case and transfer light. Don't expect them to fully light up ever again without remembering to move them (if you can)
8) It's worth fixing, sure I pre-ordered an HTC-One, but my One X will remain my phone because I love her, she's my first HTC and by far my best android ever. My HTC-One will be for Dev purposes >
9) Resist the urge to take the heat shield off to see if you can upgrade your storage by some kind of hidden micro sd, even if there is one, I'm sure it's got 5lbs of that crappy glue AT&T insisted upon.
10) If you think you want to change your digitizer just to rid your self of the AT&T logo, It's not worth it, I'm in it for 18$ for the digitizer and $43.99 for the LCD. Sure it's worth the money, but my sanity is long gone, I will name my next dog sanity.
You guys are the best ever! Good luck! God Speed!

I think I might do this if AT&T doesn't let me take my upgrade early to the One. So you would recommend HTC to do this? Just out of curiosity, was your phone rooted/romed when you sent it in? How long ago was this done for you?

The glass and LCD were glued very tight. In my opinion, it is almost impossible to separate them safely. There are some differences in cables and connectors between the US version and the one showed in youtube (i assume it is the international version). There is one cable in the AT&T version that is very hard to disconnect.
Just to be clear, I consider myself very handy in electronics. I hope you can learn from my lesson. Tomorrow, I am going to send the phone to HTC repair center. Since I voided the warranty by disassembling it. I have no idea how much they will charge me.

Are you not enabling auto brightness?
Well..
Not that if he can't do it no one can, but the threshold of glue being heated to separation vs. the heat destroying the lcd is so close.. and the parts are so cheap to get independantly of one another. In the words of the hunger games.. may the odds be forever in your favor.

Hmm..
LOL figures I would run into a problem like this, new screen stops the phone from booting, old screen fires up the phone, if i plug in the new one while its running, the new one works fine, if i restart, back to death.. i could reassemble with it still running and pray i never need to restart my phone, but that would be messed up.. any ideas?
I've never had problems with it. Even while drinking. Just apply heat, then pull. If it doesn't come that easily, then it isn't hot enough or hasn't heated evenly.
Btw the combo fpr screens and digitizer rins $50-75 on eBay

Hello
Alright, so I had my lcd digitizer combo replaced, since the glass was broken. At first the lcd didnt work because it was AOM or something like that and wasnt Sharp's model like originally, but i syncded it as follows:
1.Took out the battery
2.Connected the old screen
3.Put back your battery
4.Start your phone
5.Wait about 2min to be sure
6.Take the old screen and replace it by the new
7.Press power button
8. Should be running and working.
But now.. after assembly it does detect the sim card, but gets no signal, so i cant make calls go to internet etc.. But wlan however does work ?
is there something I broke in the progress or ..
Hoping for some help, thanks

Sure sounds like you didn't re-connect the cell antenna correctly. Those ribbon cables are a *****. Could also be the little EMI tabs that come off of the blue antenna PCB and connect to the case, I would think (just guessing, as I'm staring at my disassembled phone right now).

Screen replacement problems

Hey everyone,
I recently bought my HOX at my local AT&T store about a month ago and managed to drop within the first 2 weeks I had it, and break both the glass and LCD. I went on ebay and bought both the LCD and glass together and installed it on my phone with no luck. Screen is totally black with no response. Everthing else works flawlessly, vibrator, capacitive buttons, and speaker. The aftermarket LCD screen's cable was straight so I had to make a fold in it like the original cable was. I worry that that might be what the problem is, though I highly doubt it. I would appreciate it greatly if someone could give me some advice on what I should do at this point. Return the LCD and glass or try something else. Thanks

Welcome, search the forum. Long story short, call HTC and have them fix it for ~$220
If you signed a contract when you bought the phone and are still within 30 days, I would just have AT&T add insurance to your line and make a claim for it.

Thanks for the quick responses, looks like im gonna have to bite the bullet and pay the $220 bucks. AT&T has terrible customer service and they had no interest in helping me.

no :-/
Try both the old one and the new one without placing it into the housing...
The problem you will face most is with the LCD strip which has to be inserted fully in the slot..
Which is very difficult to do so and needs lots of time on it...
see some Replacement videos on Youtube. It do show you step by step guide on replacing the LCD..
Just place the battery and all the connectors and try powering it on b4 inserting it into the housing..

The old LCD isn`t working anymore. The LCD Connection is fully inserted. First time i started the device with the new LCD, everything was working well. A few seconds later i got the blackscreen.

Yeah i think the new LCD is broken. With a flashlight i can see Android on the screen
So i think the backlight is broken. So i will repair the phone with a new Display and Digitizer Unit. Right?
I tried the same thing, but mine was just the glass. Forget about trying to separate LCD from glass, really you are not that skilled (any of you!). anyway, It was about 45 days after receiving my HOX and I called ATT and just told them what happened and that my phone was in 1000 pieces, said I now have a contract and no phone (though I was much more miserable and depressed sounding at the time). She said "no problem, I will just toss out this old contract and we will start from scratch" It cost me another $99 but they sent me a brand new phone. I was shocked. First time a carrier ever made me smile (other than running LTE Speed Tests)

[Q] mt4gs wont turn on vibrates once

hello all looked every where seen similar ? but know answers any where .....have mt4gs that wont turn on just vibrates once was having problems with screen stuff looked distorted rainbow colored or screen not responding would have play with phone like slide keyboard in and out to get working again .....couldnt get to work pulled out battery put back in wouldnt start up.......same thing happen to the one before that similar prob still have it does same thing vibrates once........from what i gather from other posts is it might be flex cable have it apart flex cable looks fine ...would i be able to see if flex cable is messed up......... could it just be something came loose.......these are both factory oem no mods ...
If it's still under any kind of warranty I'd send it back with a note to quit returning the same phone to you. If you CAN send it, put a small indelible mark under the battery so you can check. If it's NOT covered you could theoretically fix it yourself if you're "electronics repair" inclined but it's not for the faint of heart....i.e., not easy.
If they try to SELL you another, you can get them on Ebay for half of what they'll try to sell you one for. For what they'll try to sell you one for, you can buy a Nexus 4 from google that's unlocked.....with enough change to take your GF out for a nice meal. A REALLY nice meal.
no warranty , not new to electronic repair or modding ....have two of these phone dont want to throw them out ..especially if it only needs and 18 dollar flex cable ...which would be cheaper than buying any used phone....... trying to find some info first so i dont waste money on flex cable for no reason ...ps phone is totally apart..........i think phone is turning on but nothing happens with screen and screen was buuging out when stopped working both times on both phones ..... any ideas thanx
Look at all the videos first.....

I just rebuilt my Slide (bought a new one that had a bad M/B on eBay for $65)--I tried to replace the digitizer & ended up breaking the LCD screen...The flex cable is between the LCD & the screen back mount....so it's not the easiest job.......Do yourself a favor & check out all the video on youtube first.
not a problem ..phones apart ...got skillz..... just looking for info ....i can take apart and put back together just about anything thats not the problem.ive done digi's ,broken screens, flex cables, power and volume buttons............ ive heard of this problem before just want to make sure i have the right solution ...so i dont buy the wrong part thank you
ps ...please no more posts about how hard it is.....
He does have a point, this phone is a pain in the ass compared to most, I too have disassembled many phones used to have a side business repair phones, and this was is possibly the biggest pain when it comes to how much sticky is used.
Anyway yeah it sounds like the main flex cable and that's where I would start.

So end result fixed first one....installed new main flex cable.....and tested it powered up and works fine just have to go back and screw her all together...was pain in the ass at the point where you need to separate lcd from slide housing but well worth will do another one tomorrow ....always first ones a ***** but not as hard as made to seem ......if any one needs help get at me will give pointers. will update again tomorrow
if any one has mt4gs and vibrates once and screen does not turn on its good bet its the main flex cable
same issue....

the phone was givin to me and i ordered the part on ebay it came from china. the package says. LH00042 LCD DISPLAY TOUCH SCREEN FOR MYTOUCH 4G. how would i know if it is the right part?
There are a few ways, usually the manufacturer is stickered on the back or product number. If you can't find this there is a line indented across the back of one and not the others

Dammm....busted screen!

After 5 months of use, I managed to break my screen....dam it! I've always been quite careful with my electronics, but managed to drop it today. And of course like a cat always lands on 4 legs, phones usually land face down.
Broke the top of the screen and the touch screen is rendered useless. Put an RMA in with Alcatel. I've read others on the internet have managed to get a claim in and Alcatel fixed it for a little better than $100. I would pay the $100, as opposed to buying a new phone.
Questions I have:
1. Since I can't get into my phone, is there any other way to get any data off of it? LCD is still visible, just can't get in.
2. Has anybody had a "positive" experience with getting a glass screen fixed on this phone yet? I've read a few breaks in the forum here, but it doesn't seem like too many have followed through with the repair experience.
3. Are, or is there any advice with regards to this phone and the broke screen?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Dang that sucks......so to get data you can plug it into a computer and the computer should let you pull all your info off. Also I can't help you with the getting the screen fixed as I never broke a screen on my phone.

Have you tried using an otg cable and wireless keyboard/mouse?
Yes , I tried using the OTG , but the lockscreen needs to be unlocked for the computer to communicate with both the internal and SD card storage areas. The back door is locked.
I submitted an RMA to Alcatel and am waiting for further instructions in a repair. Hopefully it won't set me back too much. If it does then I'll just pick up a used one through Swappa.
Thanks for the help.
Sent back to Alcatel. $105 to replace the busted digitizer and ship it back. Hopefully they didn't wipe my phone with a hard factory reset, I requested they not.
Should have it back Tuesday.
Just a follow up with the replacement of the digitizer. Alcatel sent the phone back to me yesterday and they wiped the hard drive with a factory reset, despite my request not to.
Phone works very well now though, I must say. Mostly all my data and apps loaded right in with ease, just lost some texts and a small folder of downloads and photos that were on the phone. Not all was lost.
Don't seem to have SD card issues any longer now, like I had before, which I find interesting. Must be the hard reset that had something to do with that, but my 3rd party launcher always used to struggle to load app icons properly, the SD card would some times not read properly? All that seems much smoother now however.
Cost me $105, oh well...time to get myself a better glass screen protector and case. I had an LK case w/ a kickstand and a peel off screen protector prior. I'll be stepping that up a notch now. One more break of this phone, I'm moving on to a different device.
Peace.
