How-to: Remove ads from FB in ie10 - Microsoft Surface

Sooo, I set out on a quest to block all ads, including Facebook ones to, well, speed up and clean up the interwebs. So, to block ads on Facebook and many other sites, I use not only tracking protection lists, but also this.
First, download and extract the zip attachment
Then, open desktop ie, go to internet options > general > accessibility > check “format documents using my style sheet”
Hit browse, navigate to and select the previously downloaded css.
Hit ok, and then ok again.
That's it! No more ads on FB!

Works great, thanks.

Work Perfectly !
Thank !

Ah cool, never though of using the stylesheets to hide ads.
Note though, unlike with Tracking Protection and "real" ad blockers, this doesn't actually protect you in any way. It just hides the element from displaying on the screen. Tracking cookies will still get places, (potentially malicious) JavaScript will still run, and your browser will take the time and bandwidth to download the files anyhow. It's unlikely to actually speed stuff up much.

Code:

#rightCol,

#rightCol,
Blocking "rightcol" doesn't seem a bit excessive? I'd see lots of false positives from that.

There's no way to just block the ads that I found, and the "rightcol" is full of sponsored "your friend likes this page" junk. Plus, I've never liked the suggested friends area.

Or alternatively blocking most ads via css works fine with a more up to date list.

Thank you!

Thanks! It is enough to see ads on Fb phone app and browsers. It really is how we get to access the sites for free. I have even found a few good deals.

[Q] After three months of owning and loving my Android, I have a bunch of questions

I bought a Desire Z last September and have just now really gotten it how I like it. I'm quite satisfied so far. The Chinese dictionaries and translation helpers are really great. It's nice to use my phone for more than just SMS and puzzle games. However, I have been keeping a file where I wrote down every question I had as it occurred to me. Hopefully someone out there can shed some light on these issues. I'm sure other people ran into them as well.
System:
How many widgets is too many? When does the phone start slowing down? I know Elixir widget takes CPU, I see it when running top.
Where are all these push messages coming from, and how do I block them?
How do I create a shortcut to open a document (like my list of questions)? I don't see the option anywhere. Bookmarks yes, .doc file no.
Why the hell does 'phone' use so much internet? It's a phone! Or is it using VOIP or something?
What is 'HTC apps' and why does it use so much internet?
What's the best way to transfer files to a desktop without a cable? I tried Dropbox but it sucked.
This one slays me. I open file manager, navigate to a .doc file, and open it. Quickoffice does not show up in the taskbar, only file manager. Took me forever to figure out that I needed to select file manager to reopen Quickoffice. WTF.
Apps:
I need an SMS junk filter that accepts wildcards. I tried a couple, but they just supported white and blacklisting, not useful at all. China Telecom spams you from a different phone number every time, but it is a special number that doesn't look like a phone number.
I need a replacement for the HTC clock that doesn't flip! I checked out probably a dozen different clocks and they ALL used the same design of flipping the numbers. This is so irritating.
I need a program to show the state of tcp sockets.
Quickoffice sucks, I can't copy and paste. Kingsoft Office sucks, I can't use symbols. What else is out there for .doc?
Just how evil are dodgy market apps? When I download a popup ducky programme and it requests permissions it obviously does not need, what does that mean exactly? What do evil apps actually do?
system
1 hard to tell, just feel it.
2 in the settings of the app you can block them, you mean like twitter notifications right? just go to the settings of twitter and turn it off.
3 with a standard rom, i don't think that is possible (correct me if i'm wrong)
4 widgets use internet to get the latest information, also the phone checks for updates on apps and for your system.
5 no idea
6 for big files, just use the cable. or try a network app.
7 that's weird, just hold the home butten and open quickoffice.
apps
don't know
correct me if i'm wrong totally xd

No, I mean push messages from my telecom provider. Not from any software (that I installed, anyway).
"What is 'HTC apps' and why does it use so much internet?"
This will be things that came on the phone, including widgets, do you actively use the sense widgets, like the social one and the news? These may be using your data

This one isn't available for download in the Market. I found Documents To Go but it crashes when opening a document with Chinese characters. Come on guys, it's 2012, support Unicode! I guess Google Docs is the only remaining choice.

I'm still hurting for this one. Today I must have gotten five spams, all starting with 10XXXXXXXXXXX. If I just had a wildcard filter the spam from my carrier would be cut off.

Good News Microsoft enabling Flash by default

Good news everyone Microsoft is enabling Flash by default in Internet Explorer 10 starting March 12th part of the patch Tuesday updates
Link http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/11/4090878/microsoft-enabling-flash-by-default-windows-8-rt-march-12
no more hacks! \o/
Yay, now I can enjoy the internet just a little bit more!
Yeah, long overdue on their part.
For people who would still like to use Flash on a whitelist (there are definitely some of us), there are some options built into IE:
1. Use "ActiveX Filtering". It's under Tools -> Safety. It will put a little blue circle in the URL bar of a site with blocked ActiveX (not just Flash; any ActiveX) and you can click the circle to turn off the filter for that site.
2. Use the ActiveX plugin's own whitelist. Go to the Add-On Manager (Tools -> "Manage add-ons") and then double-click on "Shockwave Flash Object". Hit "Remove all sites" and then OK and exit the manager. Now, any site that requires Flash will pop up a Information Bar request for it (down at the bottom, like a file download request although without the attention-grabbing color shift) which you can approve or deny. Approving the site will add it to the whitelist in the add-on manager. This can be done on a per-plugin basis.
These methods can be combined, if you want. It's also possible to block the most common source of Flash (advertisements) using IE's built-in "Tracking Protection" feature combined with either a well-built homemade list, or using one of the official lists (EasyList, the same folks who maintain the AdBlock Pro list of that name, have one for IE). As with ActiveX Filtering, you can see when Tracking Protection is blocking something because the little blue cross-out circle appears, and you can turn it off for that site by clicking on the circle an approving the site.

Webpages on espn.go.com and cnet tv must use another plug-in unfortunately since I still get no video. So that sucks, but now you don't manually have to add a site one by one so I'm thankful for that.
Disable Flash
I'm already done with them stupid flash-banners and ads. I don't need flash in Modern UI IE10, any way I can disable it?

If you disable it in the Desktop IE, it will also be disabled in the Modern UI one. (Settings menu, "Manage Add-ons," right-click Shockwave, select "disable.")

Google chrome exploit: check visited site even if history and cookies are cleared

hi, i dont know if other know his or not, but here is an method to check what sites are being regularly visited on chrome browser, even if someone has deleted the history and cleared cookies, so let go through the thread and check your self.
chrome is having some inbuilt module which are not of any use of general user and they really dont know this, so you may use these exploit or module to check what your kid/bf/gf are visiting even their browser history is clean.
1. chrome://predictors/ copy pest in chrome, will show the frequent keywords used to open a site
2- chrome://dns/ will simply list the site opened on system
3. chrome://cache/ will open the internal pages that were open
try yourself and let me know if these works for you. have a safe browsing
Curious, does this also list Private Browsing items?
(Just so we know what else to wipe when using 9gag at work.)
These aren't exploits, and can all be cleared through the browser's options (Ctrl + Shift + Del).
The only one that isn't cleared from that control panel is the predictors, but that's not a type of history at all.

Well, that's not strictly true but almost. It does store the browser history "stack", but only in the browser memory so you can click the back button. Once you close the window it's gone, and it's not accessible on your HD anywhere during or after. It's also more "incognito" than the regular browser history, as you can't go forward - only back.

The 2nd doesn't work. It just shows "DNS pre-resolution and TCP pre-connection is disabled".

Always Force Desktop Website Version

Is there a way to go past the website's UA checks and always load their desktop versions instead of mobile? Asking because I already set in the preferences of all my phone browsers to always load the full desktop version and still, many websites somehow know I'm using a mobile device and force the mobile version.
Anyone found solution for Dolphin or Boat browsers? I've read about "about:debug" and "about:useragent" showing extra UA menu elements which in my case does nothing (android 6). I was also unable to find an user agent switching app that could always force Desktop parameters to the websites.
Even if there's no immefiate solution, I would like to know the principle websites choose which version to load irrespective to browser settings. Is it network/data/service provider settings, or specific browser/resolution signature? Thanks a lot for any ideas.

If the problem is website's UA check, often you can choose an AdWay or something similar, on my phone i'm surprised to see as "auto check" some pop up, check and box.
But for what never stop working, that's need update every day...
There isn't much you can do in this case.
Sometimes in some browsers you've an option with whitelist or other but I do believe they can be related to the mobile display or desktop of a particular site.
Maybe there is an add-on xposed or plugin that I don't know
My problem is that some websites force the mobile version no matter what, as well as lack on services that I need in there, and you couldn't circumvent that in any way.
Yesterday I had to verify an email address and tried with all the browsers I have on my phone (like 5 different). They were all set to display the desktop version and all were forced into the mobile. But on the mobile you couldn't verify the link, probably on purpose (security if on mobile device), and I would not have access to laptop/desktop browser by the evening. The same is with many other features/missing services on forced mobile websites so I want to find a way to have full functionality when on the go.
Does AdWay have options for influencing data the browser notifies to the websites? Anything similar to Mozilla-code based Random Agent Spoofer browser add-on where you can basically force the browser to inject any incorrect data and prevent other data leaking while browsing? Any special cookie mechanisms inherent to mobile browsers only?
Alternatively, can I access browser settings with something like about:config/debug or else? Dolphin, Boat, others? I am sure the browser notifies the correct desktop user agent, there's something else, probably very simple, that tells websites the connection is from a portable device...

I use "user agent switcher" for chrome and it always works. It requires root though.
Can you provide an example of a website that refuses to show the desktop version?
And additionally, your build.prop contains your device's information. The browser might be transmitting that information to the website.
Thank you, the build.prop info was very helpful. I am not rooted yet as I've got my new phone just less than a month ago so still exploring, but can't really find the file, even among the hidden files on the internal memory. I will explore more and see how it goes.
I am in the UK so for example one of the websites that always loads the limited mobile instead of desktop version is the one of my service provider, EE, ee. co. uk (apologies for the intervals, I'm otherwise not allowed to post it). This mobile version is too basic and 60% of what you could do on a desktop version is cut. I've been on Three Mobile and sometimes I could get their full website working, sometimes not. Other websites are let's say bbc. co. uk and other media/news/bank websites that know, no matter browser settings, you are accessing them from a portable device.
Unfortunately I do not trust Google and any of their products so avoid voluntarily and (un)intentionally handing any personal data over to them. I would have used Mozilla for Android if it was close to the functionality Boat and Dolphin browsers provide. I even contacted the Dolphin team having previously assisted them but have got no feedback whatsoever. There must be a way for editing these unusual browser settings, but as pointed out above, I suspect it has something to do will submitting device ID info from within system folders. Thus probably only browser developers could tell us how the problem could be circumvented (and hopefully at least for now, with no root).
Or the developers of addons such as the Random Agent Spoofer or the user agent switchers.

The build.prop is a text file which should be located in system/ folder. And you usually can't view the contents of that folder without root, so that's why you haven't been able to find it.
I visited ee.co.uk using chrome, and I was able to switch between the mobile and desktop version of the site without any issues, even without using the UA changing app. All I did was select "request desktop site" from the side menu.
I tried using CM's stock browser though, and just like you experienced, the same website refused to load in desktop mode. I even went as far as changing the UA in its settings menu and even that didn't work.
So all that you wrote in the last two paragraphs have been confirmed.
Right now, it's either chrome or root until the devs fix/properly implement their UA changing feature.
I was testing other browsers the whole morning here and finally reluctantly tried Firefox. Somehow its Android version never impressed me or was too buggy for me when tested before. Probably because just before going for it I tried Pale Moon and have seen that I can readily edit just about everything via about:config. The Pale Moon's UI settings menu was however completely missing (probably a bug), along with no other controls, so I had to skip it.
So I am glad to report that using Firefox's "Request desktop website" option I finally was able to load desktop versions of websites that were forcing me to always have their mobile one instead. This means that Firefix for now becomes my main browser. As suggested by you, I tried first with Chrome but with no success (using its internal user agent options). There were a few Chrome user agent switchers in the market but although some of them did not explicitly require root, upon starting them they did so I had to uninstall them.
My question yet remains, what exactly tells websites not to load full version, even if browser's user agent reports the correct values. I will leave this to me as I go deeper into this. Glad to have got what I wanted
Thanks a lot for all your help.
Just to add for all having my problem and using Firefox for Android.
By default Firefox will always load the mobile website version and every time you will need to tick "Request desktop site" if you dislike it. As I do, there is an addon called "Desktop by Default" that will always keep the tick on for you. You may instead try creating a new string called "general.useragent.override" adding a desktop OS signature but it won't work (tested by me) for exactly the same websites I had issues with above, so do use the addon instead. It will however work for all other websites that don't have issues with Desktop mode on other browsers.
There is another string that I disabled also called general.useragent.site_specific_overrides.
Tweaking with the Chrome for Android settings seems to require root so Firefox in my case is a God bless. I hope this is helpful to all others with my issue...

Looking for the perfect web browser

Hi!
Hope im posting this in the right section.
I have a Huawei P9 and looking for the best browser for it. Been trying a few but it seems like all of them are missing important requirements that i want.
The browser should contain:
-AdBlock (that actually works)
-When closing the browser and start it again, it should start from default page and not the last visited.
-Incognito always on. Not necessary if theres a option to clear history when closing the app.
-Battery friendly
Dolphin is probably the choice, but i just cant seem to like it on Android. On iPhone it was pretty good.
Is there a option out there?
Firefox Mobile with uBlock add-on is working great for me.
Don't forget to select anti adblock removal filters and add filter http://bit.ly/nolazylist to block more ads.
