Nexus 4 w/ Samsung Infuse Dock Video+Written Review! - Nexus 4 Accessories

$13- Amazon Link
THE GOOD
This dock gives you all the basic features. Simple installation, and the charging feature works like a charm.
This dock keeps all of your cords and plugs in one place, so you shouldn’t be worried about knocking it over. This dock works great for at home, at work, and you can even use it as a stand on an airplane. And for the price, you could easily get a couple!
One of my favorite features is that this dock can be placed in both landscape and portrait mode, so you can easily get the best media viewing angle.
The dot on the bottom right hand corner of the dock is great because it automatically lights up that way you can easily ensure your Nexus 4 is charging.
Finally, this dock looks great! It gives you a nice premium finish and definitely feels like it’s worth more than $13 dollars.
THE BAD
The speakers on the back of the dock don’t work as well as external audio output.
The dock isn’t compatible with cases, not even the 1mm thin Diztronic Hardshell.
THE UGLY
There is no ugly because this dock was made by Samsung and just so happens to work with the Nexus 4.
FINAL VERDICT
For under $15 and with free prime shipping, this dock is an absolute beast. This dock keeps everything you need in a neat and orderly fashion. If you need a simple charger and stand for your Nexus 4, this is the dock for you. Be sure to check it out on Amazon for $13.
If you have any questions I would be happy to answer either here or in the comments section of the video.

It does look awesome, but the only limitation for me is the case issue, if I used a pouch or something to keep my phone protected then I would probably get this dock but I'm using a full body case so it'll get annoying having to constantly take the device out of the dock.
As for the USB audio, I believe that's a Nexus 4 device problem itself, not a problem with the dock which is a shame. I think the only device that has USB audio working out of the box is the S3.
After getting my Nexus 4 I was bit disappointed to have these two features (USB OTG and USB audio) not working.

No, it doesn't, but for $13 you still can't go wrong.

USB charging mode?
just got mine setup and it seems to be charging the nexus 4 in USB mode vs. AC mode. can anyone else confirm this? it switches to AC mode when unplugging the cord (0.7A Samsung) from the back of the dock and plugging it directly into the phone...

Yes, mine only charges at USB speed too. But for me it's OK as I only use this at night when I'm sleeping. The phone is always 100% when I wake up, even when docked with a low battery level.

I would love a couple of these but they are not available in the UK as far as I can work out.

I have this dock as well and concur with the review. What isn't mentioned is that you cannot use the USB audio out (as expected with the N4).

Here's another tip--the Nexus 4 is slightly less wider than the bracket, and will have a slight "wiggle" from side to side. You can minimize this "wiggle room" by putting two small thin strips of black electrical tape on each side of the bracket. The electrical tape usually has a slippery back side, so it will not affect the sliding motion. And the slight shininess of the tape will make it almost impossible to detect visually, so it won't look ugly.

It was inevitable--here's a Chinese knock-off supposedly for the Nexus 4 on Fleabay for about the same price as the Samsung:

I say for the price, the Samsung is unbeatable! The finish is very nice on it. Plus you also get a throwaway Samsung 0.7amp wall charger with the Samsung that you could use for charging your BT headset.

Has anyone in the UK bought this? Any feedback?
I'm contemplating it for the office / the bedroom. I have the poetic borderline case and am wondering if it will fit with that still on? I'm assuming so as it says "cover compatible" and the images appear to show some form of bumper case on the phone.

someone succeded on making the speakers work or its a hardware prob ?
I REALLY WANT IT TO WORK WITH THE SPEAKER AND THEN ITS PERFECT!

i finally got my nexus 4 so i was able to test out the dock. it works perfect but the phone is a bit loose. so i added a couple strips of electrical tape on the inside of the dock (where the phone slides in) and now the phone fits real nice and tight. u cant really see it that well.

Review: Samsung Infuse Vehicle Mount Dock for Skyrocket for DESKTOP use

Works GREAT as a desktop dock.
It stays put on my desk. I can poke the screen all I want and it doesn't budge. I can whack the sides or top and the phone doesn't fall out.
It's quick & easy to use one hand to put the phone in and remove it and connect it.
I just need to find a widget that allows me to turn on/off the 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone. And then this will be perfect. It synchs with your computer & charges the phone.
There is also software that turns it into "car mode" but I didn't install that.
Get it here for $20 shipped. Mine arrived in two-days.

You can see that the mount is a tiny bit big for the Skyrocket, but it's a bonus since it allows you to easily put the phone in there. But it's not loose enough that it will fall out. I use this in my car also and once the USB is plugged in, the phone is not going anywhere!
Landscape mode + cables.
I gave up on the suction cup and connected the sticky pad it comes with. Been in one spot for a couple hours now and I've banged away at it and the phone hasn't budged. It's a very solid surface when poking the screen with your fingers.
This may be exactly what I am looking for. I have the SGP Neo Hybrid case on my phone. Not sure if you are familiar with it but it is very low profile. Just wondering how much extra room there is. Do you think it would accommodate a low profile case?
Just Ordered one

It's not that loose of a fit, fortunately. Or unfortunately in this case.
I have the SGP Ultra Capsule which is slimmer than the Neo Hybrid and it will not fit.

Thanks for the response. That's unfortunate. I have been looking at the external battery charger with cradle but it doesn't charge your phone while in the cradle. Having a fully charged battery ready to go is great but I want to keep my phone charged during the work day so I can just pick up and go on a moments notice and know I have a fully charged phone.
Oh well, I guess I will jsut wait for some better products to be released.
Maybe the Samsung Note will be given a similar dock and that could work for your phone+case? It's supposed to be a larger phone than the Skyrocket, though I dunno how much larger.
The Ultra Capsule case takes microseconds to remove & put back on. So I'm pretty happy. But naturally would be happier if I could leave it on.
I may look to see if it's possible to mod the dock arms to allow for a case. Someday.

Damn, that's the best deal I've ever seen on this accessory.
These were selling for a minimum of $40 just two months ago.
I already have two. I like it so much for my Skyrocket that I think I'll grab another two. One for my bathroom (i listen to iHeart in the morning) and one for my bedroom. Heck, maybe a third for my garage. hahah.
Only downside is they don't come with the micro USB cable. So keep that in mind. You'll need one.
I would not recommend them for the Infuse though. It was a PITA to pull the Infuse out of these because it was so damn tight. It's like butter for the Skyrocket though.
Edit: Just bought another two. They already sold 40 at this price.
Update: The TPU case fits in this dock (but very snug). However, the dock's micro USB plug is just a tiny bit too short to fully extend into the phone when it's wearing the TPU case. So unless you know how to extend the micro-usb plug by about ~1/8", you won't be able to charge/synch.
The SGP case does not fit at all. Or at least, it fits but pops right back out.

Audio out working?
Does the dock sound work for anyone? (Everyone?)
I, unfortunately, got a Galaxy SII car dock from Amazon for $30. I didn't realize it wouldn't fit the Skyrocket (it holds down the power button). I would just notch it out, but I can't get the audio out to work.
Googling around a bit I saw that earlier versions required a modded kernel to enable this. I don't think that's necessarily the problem with the Skyrocket though, since apps like "Galaxy Dock Sound Redirector" don't complain about the kernel mod not being there. I've tried on both 2.3.5, and the new 2.3.6, with a slew of programs, including the Samsung Car Home app. Nothing works.
Also, when the dock is plugged in, I hear a sound on the audio jack that sounds like the sound card is being connected when the app redirects the sound, but then no sound comes out. I'm beginning to wonder if there is actually a problem with the phone...
BeatMOD ROM has an audio-out dock option in system settings.
But I have no idea how to get audio output from the 3.5mm headphone jack when docked. I've tried a couple things but haven't figured it out yet.
It hasn't been a big deal because I use bluetooth audio. But it would still be nice to get that feature working.

Works for me, although i used one of the stickers to keep the usb port from being able to slide back and forth freely, mostly because it helps lock it into place and too loose without it. im able to shake it around without the phone falling out

Are you saying that you get sound out of the dock's 3.5mm audio jack to external speakers?
If so, did you install any particular apps to get it to do this?
hmmm does it hold the phone at all? secure enough to use in a car without the usb plugged in? or is it being plugged in a requirement? ...

Yes & no.
I've used the Skyrocket naked in the Infuse dock in my SUV for the last few weeks without a single incident. But ONLY with the USB plugged in. When USB is plugged in, the phone is not going anywhere. I would not feel comfortable leaving the phone in the dock without the USB plugged in though. It needs the USB to hold it in place.
BUT, if you have a TPU case, then it fits snug in the Infuse dock when wearing the case. Very snug, two hands required for insertion + removal. But the USB would not need to be plugged in. Nor is the USB plug long enough to plug into the phone, when the phone is in the TPU case.
SGP Ultra Capsule case will not work. Nor Otterbox Impact. I haven't tried any others.

Best WINDSHIELD car mount

I know there are a few threads on this, but they are cluttered with talk about non-windshield mounting docks/mounts and what apps launch.
My mission is to find the best windshield mounting car dock/cradle/whatever for the HTC Sensation. It has to be tight, so no "goosenecks." No universal junk either.
Options so far:
1) OEM HTC Car dock
The problem with this one seems to be that the "arm" of the mount isn't long enough and may not fit in portrait mode if your windshield is too "raked" (angled). It will hit the windshield in some cases.
I was reading another thread where one of the posters reviewed it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16385008&postcount=117
2) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Windshi...ccessories&hash=item20c2736c35#ht_1268wt_1139
3) http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Car-Win...ccessories&hash=item231333bc36#ht_2876wt_1139 - Looks like this arm would be too short as well
Suggestions??
Right now I have a OEM mount for my Motorola Milestone (Droid) which worked perfectly:

The arm was long enough to allow the phone to swivel to any postition without hitting the windshield and it also came up far away from the windshield close to my fingers. Just for reference, I drive a 1994 BMW 325i (E36).
Check out the Arkon Series Mounts. I had the S514 for my DZ, which is a little small for the Sensation but will be ordering Deluxe Mini Mount. At $15, they are great quality products and a good value. Highly recommend.
http://www.arkon.com/smartphone-car-mount.html
Interesting, looks like the deluxe has more movement than the regular mini. I say that because it looks like it has an extra joint. Why is it cheaper than the regular Arkon mini mount? Any idea if it has a magnet so that the phone knows it is "docked"? On my motorola with CM7 this would (at the very least, with Car Home uninstalled), keep the screen on without dimming.

I know the OP doesn't like the "crappy universal" mounts, but the universal one I use is the Arkon MG115. And I can say it's beyond crappy universal lol. It's well made. I assume that the OP meant the universal no-name brand with bad build quality.
The reason I opted for the universal one is because I use different cases depending on where I am using the phone. If I am on vacation, I will bring this to use with my Seidio Active case. Otherwise I use an Aprolink hybrid case, which is a bit thinner.
The mini mount I use can be mounted on the dash with the disk you see there and also can be mounted on the windshield of course. But users may vary. Some may not like it and some like other "styles". I posted some personal pics a while back if anyone wants to take a gander let me know, I'll dig em up.
And on a related note, I have been using various docks from craigsdocks.com and they recently released a specific swivel dock made for the Senny and can be adjusted for cases or extended batteries like the Mugen batteries.

Yes, I just meant something of quality. The Arkon MG115 is the Arkon Mobile Grip Mini on their site. I'll probably go either with this or MG114, the "deluxe." Are the little arms padded? Phone doesn't slowly slide down from vibrations? Do the little arms come over the front of the screen once mounted?
I forgot to mention it should allow the camera to see through the mount.
Keep em coming. If someone has pictures of the OEM car dock mounted on a windshield, please post them
I chose the M115 only because I know myself, I would continue to adjust the middle joint to the point of breaking lol. So I opted for the shorty that couldn't be adjusted in the mid arm. I can still swivel pretty well with the dock. And I use this mount with Waze navigation all thetime and take pics to report accidents, traffic conditions, etc.
I had one of these (link to dealextreme) for my X10i and it was a perfect fit. Currently my wife uses one on her HD7 and it's terrific. And you can't really beat the price.
The only dig I have with the oem dock is that it's too easy to pop out the phone. But I loved having the plug in the base.
edit: aaah, i checked out those ebay links. It looks the same except for the different suction holder. Well, the phone cradles on those, in my experience, have all been perfect.
So you have the OEM dock? Can you put the phone into portrait without hitting the windshield?
Do you have pictures of the dealextreme mount? Saw those on ebay as well...

Yup, I have the Sensation OEM car dock. I'm not sure on the windshield, I keep mine behind the gear lever (easier to swipe to change songs, car already has navi). I'll try on the windshield tomorrow and let you know.

Yes, take pictures of both please! I used to keep my Droid mounted up near the mirror with the phone coming within reach of my fingers just off the steering wheel. This way if I did need to look at the phone, the road and traffic is still in the line of sight.

OEM for the win
I went with OEM after trying a Universal T-Mobile car mount they have at the store for $30 bucks, but my Sensation went flying off the windshield after the first tight turn I took together with that universal mount, so it didn't work for me. OEM works well so far, but after trying it mounted on the windshield (which worked well) I ended up putting it on the dash so it doesn't block the windshield at all while being within reach.
May I ask why you're only set on mounting it on the windshield?
Homemade Mount
I actually made my own. I picked up a Garmin Nuvi mount off eBay. I dremeled the clips/tabs off to give a flat surface. Then I used industrial double sided tape to attach a cheap version of a Case Mate barely there cover. The setup works pretty good. I've never had the phone fall out or the mount come off.
I'll post some pics of it when I get the chance.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16385008&postcount=117

I am kind of in love with my car so I would never stick anything on the dash or heaven forbid drill holes haha.

Thanks for the suggestion but that kind of neck would definitely be shakey. Also, no hole for the camera. I would like to be able to take videos.

Its not shaky at all for me. Plus it comes with the vent add on so you dont have to use the neck with the windshield if you dont want. Also my phone is held in place by the sides so I can prop it up higher and use the camera if you like also. There are many options with this mount and can be used with many different devices and later on when you get another phone it will work that also. I used to use it for my desire and now I use it for my sensation. Ive also used it with a garmin and ipod touch. Not trying to tell sell it lol. Just saying you should check it out and give a proper run first before dismissing it.

Here it is in portrait. Here it is in the regular spot next to the deal extreme type of stand (for the HD7, similar size but it won't fit the sensation). Here it is horizontal.
In all the photos, the usb plug is on the bottom. The angle is a little steep, I think if I had rotated it and then adjusted it, it would have been ok. Adjusting it is pretty stiff so I don't like changing too much, lol.

Awesome, thanks for the pics man. Looks like it's not too bad with hitting the windshield. It'd be nice if it came out a little further though. I wonder how the dealextreme one goes on the windshield. That long neck doesn't bend right?

The silver neck on the OEM dock is extendable to get it further away from the glass if needed. Also, T-Mobile had our docks on sale as of a week or so ago in their stores for 39.99... Worth checking it out, they have a great return policy if it doesn't work for you.

I would recommend the iBolt XPro Dock. Looks to be big enough to handle most any case as well as supporting devices up to the size of the Note.
As an added bonus it puts the device into docking mode automatically.
I agree. the Ibolt is great.

i had this dock, it wobbled everywhere, all the little extra features are just annoying. also required 2 hands to put the phone in as for the samsung dock one hand works.
The Craigsdocks dock is far and away the best charging dock I've ever used.
It is VERY low-profile. Much better looking, sturdier and less intrusive than the iBolt dock (and easier to use). At the same time, it offers true one-handed insert/removal. Extremely easy. No docking your phone and then attaching the charge cord. It all gets done in a single one-handed operation.
And it works with all the large cases. It even works with Note II and probably the III when it comes out. So you buy one dock and use it for ANY 4" to 6" phones that have the MicroUSB plug at the bottom of the phone. It's unbelievably easy to use and you don't have to worry about buying a new dock every time you buy a new phone.
Which makes the ~$60+ price tag easier to swallow.
http://www.craigsdocks.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-s4-note-ii-car-dock/
Also, you can easily retrofit the dock for charge-only cable, analog USB audio cable or even USB-OTG/USB-DAC audio cables. Any of the three fit and can be quickly swapped out.
I plug my USB charging cable into a 2A charger so I get full 1900 mAh charging rate while driving.
Look how tiny this thing is. Less than 1/2 the size of that bulky iBolt dock. Amazing that it works with S4 or Note 3 phones.
And I just draped the single cable down the back of my dash so it's all very un-intrusive.

Hmm, I just noticed Craigsdocks re-vamped the style of the dock. It's now slightly larger looking and the USB-Cable install looks easier to swap out, but not quite as clean looking as before when the cable was angled towards the rear. Now it's angled straight out to the right.

Thanks. I watched the manufacturing video. It's definitely not a Made in China stuff, but the price tag is hefty. However, considering it's quite universal, it's a good (not great) price. I remember before Amazon and eBay were flooded with cheap stuff, this kind of things used to cost around that much if not more.

I have just got an S4 and will be alternating between the Spigen S-View case and a Zero lemon TPU case with the 7500 battery. How do you adjust the Craigs dock USB port to take in to account of the distance from the back of the case to the USB port? If it is easy to adjust then this would be perfect for me.

On my older version, there are a few allen type screws. The newer version looks like there is just one screw.
So you move the charger port forwards and back. Once you get to the spot where it perfectly slides into the phone, then you tighten down the screw.
On mine, it was super stable. I've not had to re-adjust since I originally set it up months ago.
The dock works with any case. But I don't know if it works with 7500 extended batteries? Might want to double-check with the Craigsdocks guy. He's really good about responding to questions quickly.
Yeah, so you see how the arrows I put in this pic go up and down? That is how the charging port adjusts.
It does not adjust left/right (not necessary) but it does adjust up/down for thicker vs. slimmer cases.

PMA Charging Behavior

I know most are still trying to figure out the Qi vs PMA thing. I have converted to PMA and I am wondering if this is normal. I place my phone on the powermat overnight and wake up to only 96-99% charged. What I have found is the phone fully charges but then will stop itself from charging and drain. When I had a Qi charger on my other phones they stayed topped off. It seems this is a protection mode but I am wondering if it is necessary. My hope is a custom rom can disable this and we can keep out phones topped off on PMA chargers. Anyone else seeing this as well? Thoughts.
unrelated and I'm sorry for the off topic. but I am interested in the PMA charger and just don't have any experience with them. how does it compare to Qi. particularly I am interested in heat generation and charge speed. maybe in relation to USB charging as well as Qi charging

Well, I have seen it compared to VHS vs Betamax and that is the truth. If you are old enough to remember that battle then you understand. If not, I would say it this way, Qi is VHS and PMA is Betamax. Sony and betamax had a much better product but VHS won because more companies jumped on board. I have used Qi charging on my last few phones. Its easy and works well. Overall though, PMA charges faster with higher voltages and I do not find my phone nearly as warm. It also has magnetic centering to keep the phone in the middle of the coil. There are some quirks, like the one I am asking about in this thread. I never had this problem with Qi. Its more of an inconvenience as in the morning, I have to take my phone off the charger and replace it. It will re-engage and charge to full again. I really think this is a protective measure.
This would seem to be a serious issue as well considering this and the lgg2 spend an hour plus at 100%.I really don't want to move to PMA, this may actually be the show stopper thanks for posting
If PMA is better then why are so many against AT&T using it?
I don't give a hoot which is better or not. The effing problem is that there isn't crap for options when it comes to PMA. If my only choice is that flip case, then I go without wireless charging. It was ridiculous of AT&T to go in this direction when NO ONE else supports it. LG didn't even bother to make a charging back for it. That's what bothers me the most. If i had to buy a new PMA charger fine, but give me something to put on my phone.

Stinks you can't just buy a replacement back, but you can remove the charging circuit from the circle case and install it in your original back. It's a tight fit, but that's what I did. Also, it stays topped off at 100%.
No problems with losing charge here. In the morning it's full 100%. Took a few times to find the sweet spot on the powermat but I am happy. First time using wireless charging btw.

It's a tight fit due to the metal disc located in the center. The circle case has an indentation for it where the stock cover doesn't. Had to reposition the bottom part one time so the cover would snap on.
Just took my time. Heated with a hair dryer. Peel a little. Reheat and peel a little more. Rinse and repeat until I had it all the way off. The glue is pretty stubborn.

What king of chargers are you guys using. I have those Duracell Powermat with the iPhone 4 cases AT&T was closing out at $10. Maybe that's my problem. I'm using the same case so it just about has to be that. I'll buy a different one if needed but mine definitely stops charging at 100% and then drains. Another weird behavior is before I had the PMA and used a USB, the phone would alarm over and over when it got to 100% telling me to disconnect the charger. Anyone else see this? I thought this was weird too but I was using a 2.1 wall usb charger and not the stock one supplied in the box. It doesn't do this in my car though.

Ok that's the same one I am using accept it had an iPhone case. Mine definitely quits charging when it hits 100%. Are you sure yours doesn't cut off as well? Even when I am charging the portable battery, the mat will quit charging when it is full. The little light on the bottom of the mat turns off as well showing it is no longer charging. I have 2 of these mats and they both act the same way.

Ok, so was kind of perturbed that AT&T went this route as already have a few Qi chargers that I invested in. Am thinking of still moving forward with the upgrade as it appears the PMA chargers are cheap at the moment. For those that are using the PMA charging, how's the charging rate / how longer does it take to fully charge? Also hows the heat when charging? This is one issue I do have with my Qi chargers in that if I do not place my S4 in the "sweet spot" the phone gets excessively warm.
Also question to americasteam, how's the bulge on the back of the phone now that you have transplanted the PMA coil. Can you still fit the phone into a standard case or is it too big now? If possible would be great if you could post a picture of the side showing the increase in size. I mention this as I went thru this with my S4 and and had to search for a "thin" Qi adapter that would still allow use of case. Most caused to large a bulge and prevented certain cases from fitting. Since there is presently only one PMA Coil available, like to know how well the transplant worked (size wise).
Thanks

The case looks like it might be slightly raised where it meets the volume rocker on the volume down side. I have no idea if it was originally like this or if it's caused by the charging coil. Also, I don't use a case so have no idea what effect it would have.

[Q] Car mount (specific needs)

I'm looking for a car dock for my Note 4.
Looking at all the existing threads (yes, there are several), the most recommended options seems to be
iOttie One Touch XL
iOttie One Touch 2
iBolt xProDock
But none of them seems to fit the bill for me. I've got a bumper case on my phone, and with the case it's about 3.35 inches wide. The Touch XL only supports phones up to 3.3 inches and the Touch 2 only goes to 3.2 inches. The xProDock seems to be able to handle the size of my phone, but it looks to be designed for holding the phone in landscape mode. I much prefer portrait mode for GPS navigation. I also want something that mounts to a RAM ball mount, which the xProDock does.
So, does anyone have any recommendations for a dock that attaches to a RAM ball, is made for portrait mode and can hold my 3.35 inches wide phone?
Spigen case + iOttie XL
I currently am using the Spigen case and the iOttie XL. According to Amazon, my case makes the phone 4". I'll go and try to measure how wide the mount actually gets later today, as that exta .15" may not matter in your case.
BTW, the suction mount from iOttie is a beast. I'm not sure how I'd get it off if I needed to. It's very stuck to my dash.
YMMV.
I have a Note 4 with Tech21 case. I use this in my car....

Not sure what size your RAM ball is. I have a RAM mount setup for my xoom but I have never actually checked to see if it would fit but I think the RAM ball for the tablet mount is bigger.
The craigsdock will meet all your needs now and for future phones. Google it.

I currently am using the Spigen case and the iOttie XL. According to Amazon, my case makes the phone 4". I'll go and try to measure how wide the mount actually gets later today, as that exta .15" may not matter in your case.

That looks good. How wide is your phone with the Tech21 case? Do you know anywhere else to buy that mount? Need to find someone who would ship it to Sweden...

I don't actually have a RAM mount yet, but I was thinking standard B-size. But that adhesive mount that comes with the dock you linked might be good enough

Understandable. But you buy one dock and it lasts forever.
I bought mine back when I had my S3.
Then used that same dock with my S4, Note 3 and now my Note 4.
It's so adjustable that it even worked with the Note 3's MicroUSB port that is set off to the side rather than right in the middle.
And I'll be using it with any other 4" to 6" phone that happens to have a MicroUSB port on the bottom.
Money saved in the long run. :good:
i use an iblason armorbox which is slightly wider than your measurements and the itian wireless charger fits perfectly including charging with the samsung oem wireless back inside the armorbox case. try that.

I got that and never looked back
I struggled with a clip in mount for ages until I stumbled upon the magnet one above, would never go back

I'm not sure how well a magnetic mount would work since I don't have a flat back. (I'm using a bumper case)

Wireless charging would have been awesome if it worked for me... Unfortunately it doesn't My bumper case raises the back of the phone too far away from the charger. I've got a Samsung wireless charger on my desk, but it just doesn't work with the bumper on the phone.
so change your bumper case to an iblason armorbox.

I use the xProDock and it can be used in either landscape or portrait. It'll rotate 360 degrees. I also like that you can select which side of the dock you want the power cord to route.

How secure do you feel it is in portrait mode? I'm worried that the phone will eventually slide out since there's no support on the bottom in portrait mode. How natural does it feel to insert the phone in portrait mode? It just feels like it was mainly built for landscape use...

I would agree that the xProDock lends itself to be used primarily in landscape mode and it's easier to mount your phone into the dock in that position. However, the double spring-loaded upper latch is VERY strong and holds my Note 4 quite securely. Ironically enough, if I had one critical thing to say about the dock, it's that the mount holds the phone in too tightly. Until you get the hang of it, it's kinda hard to get the phone into the mount to begin with. There's a certain technique to getting it in and out, but once you get use to it, it's not so bad. If you get this dock, I can't imagine you'd have any problems with the phone slipping out in portrait mode.
Just be aware that Samsung removed the analogue audio out through the microUSB connector (for the Galaxy S5 and the Note 4) so the aux-out cable is not compatible with this kit. iBOLT recommends the IBXC-33617 xProDock Connect Kit if you desire that feature. Don't quote me, but I don't think that's an issue if you source your audio through the earphone jack or Bluetooth.

The bumper case might present a problem. I would highly recommend finding a magnetic mount that carries the note 4, and getting a case that has a back. That would seem to be your best option.
I sincerely apologize for the delay. My case on my phone is 3.3" (not the 4" I said earlier). The XL opens to 3.5". There's not a lot of extra leeway, but more than enough to snugly hold my phone and case.
Hope this helps.
