Lumia 820 turns off and wont turn back on - Nokia Lumia 820

Im having a problem with my 820 and its pretty darn annoying. Every one and then it just turns off and the only way to turn it back on is to take the battery out. Anyone else having this problem?

Yep
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021800
Hope you get it sorted.

Yep, I had it once, it was just after I paired it via bt to my car but it hasn't happened since.
Sent from my RM-825_eu_euro1_217 using Board Express

I think the system update released yesterday fixed this.

Yep, instead of taking out the battery, turn it on while holding volume down.

thats doesnt even work... have to take out the battery.
This crap happened 3x in the last 24h. Phone is going back and I regret that I didnt take another Android phone...

Had to send mine back, Bear in mind this is a hardware issue and not related to the OS as my replacement is working faultlessly, Androids have their hardware issues too and I have had to send many a HTC back for repair, Am none too impressed with Nokia ATM as the wifes Lumia 900 has just had to go in for repair with a non working loudspeaker

I agree, this is Nokias last whistle if they want to survive in the phone market and so far they are blowing it... ;/

I got a Lumia 820 for X-mas with the same error.
I have update the firmware to verion 1232.5951.1249.1003 and there is still this problem where the screen is turned off and I have hold down power and "volume down" button to restart the phone. It is very annoying, special when the alarm is not working in the morning.
Is there a software/firmware solution to the problem or is it a hardware error in the phone?
I found this at nokia forum:
http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Lumia-820-freeze/m-p/1613474/highlight/true#M25637
I will try to turn off speech in setting and see if the phone will continue to freeze

I gave mine into to get replaced... Pissed me off too much to try and fix it.

After 4 days with the Speech settings turned off have the phone only freezed one in that time. The phone used to freeze 3-4 times every day. The phone af been constant turned on and I can use the alarm to wake up in the morning.
Update:
Today the Lumia 820 freezed. The only thing have have changed is that the Bluetooch have been turned with my headset, used and then turned off again.

got my phone back today... Unfortunately its the same phone... reflashed. Reinserted my SIM... 30min and it froze.... THANKS NOKIA! First and last phone from you.

That really is bad work from Nokia, I ended up selling my O2 replacement as got short of cash but cannot fault O2 as they did replace my faulty handset.
I am now debating whether to get another Nokia as had nothing but trouble with all of the Lumias me and the wife have owned, From Proximity sensor failures to loudspeaker to Device not waking up,
Think they really are in trouble now as they have shifted yet another 1000 workers

They are definately in trouble. This was there last chance and they blew it. Shoulda gone Android when they had the chance and not bash it. Some really good looking phones with crappy software.
Time to go b*tch at the guy from the store again.

Possible Solution !!!!
THIS IS NOT MY COMMENT, only copied from http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Nokia-Lumia-920-freezing/td-p/1604040/page/13 from user CloudStrife
I think there are many problems all software related. I wonder if all the Lumias were made using the same hardware, i.e. the same wlan adapter, the same video processor etc etc... if the answer to this question was NO, then there might be compatibility issues with the driver for different components.
Some experience the issue with the WLan I read, I exprienced that with the data network, leaving it only WLan never made it freeze. Some others with the "find my phone" option. That maybe could explain the crashes during the night?
However... I found and tried to follow a suggestion that one user reported coming from both Microsoft and Nokia, and surprisingly it seems to have fixed my issue.
I removed the SIM, then turned up the phone and left it on for 10 minutes (I read that when the "no sim" message appears, some files are supposed to be deleted, and written again when the SIM will be put back in the handset and recognized as new).
Then I shut it down, inserted the SIM back, and turned it on.
It has never frozen again, it's about four days.
My issue was when I had both network data connection and WiFi, or when I had only network data connection but with low service so it was often switching between 2G (Edge) and 3G data connection.
From when I tried that I left enabled both WiFi and network data, and it never froze again.
I don't know if it's a definitive solution, but I hope so.
What I'm pretty sure of is the fact that if I left both WiFi and network data enabled before, it was a matter of hours for it to freeze.
I hope that my experience can be helpful for someone... at least, it worths a try.
OR
Try this:
If automatic date/time settings are on, the phone freezes if there is problems with the date/time sync:
1. On Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings , and then tap Date+time.
2. Tap to toggle Set automatically to Off.
3. Perform a "Soft Reset", i.e. press and hold the power button and volume down button for about 10 seconds; the phone should vibrate and reboot your phone.
4. After reboot date+time should be wrong! Thus, on Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings , and then tap Date+time.
5. Tap on each of the options to set your current Time zone, Date, and Time. When you're done, tap the phone's back button.
IMPORTANT Don't turn on automatic date+time setting again!
OR
It is the Network + update and affects everyone!

after software update ,not switching on
after the windows software update automatically my lumia 820 gone for restarting,, after that it shows nokia logo and gone off again,, now my phone is not switching on,, is there any problem happen with the software update? how to recover from this problem?

Screen going black

I've tried various different ROM images (including the excellent Dr.Gonzo), and I have this problem with all of them.
When I'm using the phone either with the keyboard in or out, the screen just switches off randomly. If I wait a few seconds (possibly the backlight timer length), then it comes back. Mostly... Othertimes I have to wait a lot longer, but it does always come back.
A reboot sometimes fixes it, but not always - does anything survive a reboot or battery removal?
Anybody else seen anything like this? I have seen a lot of threads about the screen staying on, but not off.
Of course, it could be a hardware fault, but because it's intermittent, it's hard to prove.
Mike
same problem
If you shake the phone can you re-produce this problem? I've never not heard of this being affected by software - you might also want to ensure you're not overclocking it.
Nothing is removed when you do a battery removal or reboot, ensure your connections are all tight and make sure the SIM pins are all making contact and the SIM door closes, apart from that it sounds like a possible bad LCD ribbon.
Shaking it doesn't reproduce the problem.
Once the phone has started doing this, it happens everytime you press a key.
Seems more like a memory leak to me since it always seems to happen after a while of web browsing/email use.
So actually, it looks like it might be a hardware fault.
I think it happens when the device gets warm. After a few minutes with the screen on, keyboard lit up, wifi on, the phone gets pretty warm and that's when the screen seems to go black. Leave to cool and all returns to normal.
Mike
Same issue here, but the screen does not acually go black/blank it just seems that the screen backlight does not turn back on from a standby like state, the phone itself functions but just not able to see whats going on on the screen.
(keyboard lights work fine and come on when expected)
Not sure about the heat theory as it happens (to me) most often right after a call, anything over 30-50 seconds and the backlight problem occurs, when it decides to work again is a matter of luck.
As said before because it's intermittent, it's very hard to prove.
Has anyone who has had this issue, fixed it with a hard reset ?
Very strange ... but also getting very annoying now!
i got the same thing. took it back to warranty and they said nothing's wrong with the phone but i still get this.
I experience the same problems.. it happens pretty random, but every time when you hit a key. I have set all timers to never but the problem is still there.
Running Gonzo 1.1 at the moment, upgraded from guava.. but that didn't solve the problem.
It is getting so annoying now that I am about to throw the s710 in the dustbin
I have had the same problem!
I have turn it back to my provider and no problem now.
i have the same problem with my VOX
apparently, i can still receive phone calls, and do whatever i want with the phone,
but the screen just stays black, its like if you have unplugged your monitor
since i dont have a htc center in my town or anywhere else nearby.
does anyone know a way on how to open the phone, change what need to be changed and correct the problem? im all up for testing if that would resolve this annoying problem :s
cheers everyone
there is a dismantling manual somewhere in this forum. search.
i don't think taking it apart would help you because this is not a physical fault that you can locate.
and i learned that mcel is the retail seller of vox in mozambique. they should be able to help you with service. else just send a mail to htc support and they will guide you.
yes, mcel are the retail sellers, but i tried to go there, and there are no specialists on htc's there,
the thing is, i didnt bought my htc from them, so i can't go there and change for another one
but tks anyway
no problem
but do try to contact htc support by email. they might suggest a way.
I'm having exactly the same weird problem and I think I found some pattern when it occurs. Well, the thing is that in the bright day or in a room with lots of light it works just fine. In the darker conditions… well… not so fine. It seems to me that this screen blackout happens whenever the keyboard light is on and screen changes to full brightness (in the dark, because of the light sensor). In the daylight, keyboard light doesn't turn itself on, so s710 works. I don't know much but this definitely isn't some bad contact problem. Maybe some battery problem, but I doubt it since I can receive phone call in this condition. This started to happen after I flashed this Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM from HTC (I have original S710). Flashing Dr.Gonzo's later on didn't bring any luck either. I believe that some power control SW is the main culprit. I've read that many people mention some Tornado Power Control app. Does anybody know can this application be permanently disabled or removed?
are you trying to say that by desabling the light sensor, the problem might go away?
i would also like to know if it possible to have the baklight on the lowest possible brightness forever, because it seems, on a low brightness the problem might go away

I also have this problem with the lightsensor turned off. And also at (as it seems) random moments.
well, even with the light sensor turned off, the problem persisted.
i got my phone to a repair shop of htc's, and they figured out the problem
my phone is now 100% thankfully, the repair man told that the problem was because of bad or malfunctioned circuits, he exchanged them with new ones, and the problem went away,
dont know wich circuits exactly, and he didnt want to tell me, but i suggest anyone having the same problem to try and do the same
probably its a hardware malfunction with these VOX,
its possible since so many times before i've heard about malfunctioned pieces coming out in large quantities for sale.
anyways, cheers everyone, and good luck Portugal in EURO!
I have the same problem. I just noticed that it usually happens when the phone is warm, so if you need to do something on my phone just... take some ice from fridge and put it on back of your mobile. I cant see any more solutions.
Please someone help us!
Update. Problem Solved
Just thought I'd update this thread I started.
I sent the phone back to my dealer (Grapevine in Poole,UK).
A week later, I got a brand new one back from the HTC repair centre.
So far, so good. Looks like the problem's solved.
Mike
Sam problem here,
i called with HTC and they sent them to there repair centre.

display problem, screen garbled and/or scrolling non stop and/or blank

hi,
newbie in this forum and newbie in using a phone running an operating system. please help.
bought the phone in late June 2008, received it before the month ended, installed TomTom Navigator 6 on it and tested the various hotspot around my place, happy with it and stashed the phone on a safe place in the closet as T-Mobile don't have 3G service. then last week I decided to get an ATT plan (can't stand the iPhone 3G ad) so I can tasted the blazing HSDPA speed.
last week on Wednesday I use the phone as a GPS to get me to a hotel I'm staying near the White House. it got me there no problem. then the next day, the horror started. I was trying to plot a walking course to many of the nearby "stuff to see" and the phone just sits there saying that it can't get a valid GPS signal. then I tried to go to Google Maps using IE. the screen started scrolling, literally scrolling, then when it stopped, whatever usually on the top ended up in the middle of the screen, the bottom ended up on the top, and the screen was "split" in 2 with the edges staying dead center. so I thought, ah, this phone is just too tired, it ran out of memory (as all windows always does ignoring how much ram you put, at least in my experience), so I press the power button to let it do the light sleep. when I turned it back on, the phone seems to work the problem out and I tested it by going online.... guess what, the screen started scrolling again and even adding "I can play dead". the screen is not responding to anything (touch, tap, swipe, rotating the scroll wheel, pressing the buttons) beside the power button that seemed to turn the display off. when I turned it back on, the screen just gives off some light on the sides, but that's it, the screen is blank. taking out the battery doesn't even fix the "blank" screen thing. the device seemed to work out the problem after I left it unused for about 2-4 hours, but then it started again when I tried to do anything (all I ever do with my Touch Cruise is going online via wifi and/or att data plan, plus using the phone as GPS).
even after resetting the phone to a factory default doesn't help (did it this morning via a representative guidance). so I'm stumped. within a week, the phone basically broke, then how about another year? will it become bits and dust?
anyone can give me advise? one representative I talked to said that I can get a replacement for the phone but the last one I talked to said that HTC only have an option of repairing the phone but not replacing one.
thank you to all who reads.
Really weird.
Try to get replacement, if not possible, get it repaired.
If hard reset / factory default did not help... It does sound to me like malfunctioning device.
On the other hand... is it provider locked device or unlocked one?
I guess it's unlocked, but I'm bit confused since you mention both T-Mo and AT&T...
I do hope that there's original ROM on it...
For what it's worth, my XDA Orbit II has just developed the exact same fault. I tries soft and hard resets, re-flashed with 6.5 rom and then a 6.1 version, all to no avail. It goes through the boot sequence and asks for a screen calibration - if you ignore the scrolling screen and tap in the right places, the calibration is accepted (which makes me think it's not the digitizer. The screen itself seems to be fine - no missing pixels, cracks, - it displays everything it should only with a constant vertical scroll. If it had a vertical hold knob, I could fix the problem.
Really weird, it was working fine this morning and after sitting in its cradle for a couple of hours it is now like this.
Any ideas as to how I might cure the problem would be gratefully received.

Phone keeps randomly powering off!

Hi, been away from the forum, as i have just got back from holiday
i am having a prblem with my desire.. i went to florida, left my phone at the theme parks, desire s, zte blade, ipod touch in the car for 8 hours in around 30-40 degrees. since then, my desire s has been faulty.
my touch, and zte work fine, but my desire has a major problem now. it works normal in use, but when i lock it and put it into sleep mode, when i try to unlock it , it will start up the whole phone again. basically, it powers off on its on randomly in sleep mode.
The problem is really annoying. it is also very common on the desire hd..
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...360GB360&q=htc+desire+hd+randomly+turning+off
Im running leedroid port from dhd. i thought the rom was the problem, but it isnt. i flashed other roms, hydrogen, but the problem still exists. shoud i test the stock unrooted ROM?
i dont think it is a software fault anyweay. the phone was working fine for 2 weeks running leedroid, then suddenly i have the problem now.
i have emailed htc, and awating a reply now. so will i need to get it repaired? or replaced as a faulty unit?
Hmm.....does sound like the heat has done it in....damn!
Although there are plenty of other countries where the temp is close to this all the time, you would have thought....
Try installing close to stock ROM with no apps installed, (Yes perform wipe). I'd suggest installing battery moniotr widget and get iot to log full details (including apps), force log in sleep mode so that you can at least see when it dies and what temp it's at when it does and what apps are running at the time.
Although does sound like warranty return issue (at least this way you get a new motherboard and possibly even a new device)...(you might want to check the recommended running temp levels in the warranty book first - just so that you get your story straight)
Positive note: at least its still functioning so that you can re-install RUU etc and mask S-OFF before returning it?
ps
Mines done this a couple of time over the last few months...although I always figured that I've hit the buttons in my pocket?

Cheers Ben! Love how your always here to help!
I'll try installing battery monitor widget , and go back to stock, s-on
So do you think it was the heat that damaged the phone? My ipod touch and zte blade were left in the car, but they work 100% fine
I've checked the warranty thingy, it says do not expose battery to 60 degrees or higher.
But to be honest, I dot really know how hot it could get in the car... Florida is very hot!
I'm just waiting for a reply from HTC now
The phone works fine everywhere else, its just this problem.. I tried cooling the phone by switching it off and taking the battery out, and leaving it for an hour.
The thing with this problem, is that it is entirely random! It sometimes last ages in standby before the problems occur, or within 10 minutes.
How can I prove it to HTC??
I wouldn't worry too much about your phone doing the same once in a few months or so
Mine is happening at least 6 times a day!!
I'll try to keep the thread updated to how it all goes
Cheers Ben

Hello,
Could have been the heat, but could simply be a faulty motherboard....either way a new device might be a good thing, 1/2 way through your warranty period.
Don't know how hot it gets in cars in Florida....but I know that it can kill pets let alone phones!
Cheers, not worried about my phone, just trying to relate that's all
You're just going to be have to forcefull in your email and exaggerate...even

My phone is just a month old now
Hopefully they just send me a new phone
I tried to act pleading in the email, but I did not mention anythig about leavig it in heat or the car. I just said it keeps crashing on me...
Hopefully I get a reply soon tommorow!

Though my phone was not left anywhere where temp was extreme, mine is also doing this since this week,, Also a few months old and I blame the apps installed . I ahd battery monitor and suspected just that prog..
I have not yet gone to a clean rom yet but selectively remove apps till I find improvement....
Meaning there are others with the same problem !

Yeh, some of them have the same problem after a couple if weeks old (not exposed to heat or anything) what causes this problem?
How often do u have this problem??
My old Nokia 5230 has the same problem
Mine has the same problem and has never been exposed to extreme heat. I think the power button is faulty and after some use it get stuck some times and closes the phone down. I started pressing the button with less force and the random power downs stopped happening.
What happened? I have not found a relationship yet. It seems random too me so far. If it happens once more i will go to factory default plain htc stock rom (i have not fiddled with the device or rom)
If it then happens as well i know enough. I will see and report me experience in due time.
Btw its android 2.3.3 build 1.47.401.4

To be honest, I think its more of a hardware problem!
My phone was running fine on stock and custom roms for 3 weeks, then it just started last week when I left my phone in the car
A lot if desire hd users had the same issue as us!
I'm awaiting a reply from HTC now
Will update on what they say.
the heat probably was the culprit
my phone reaches around 45c at times due to the high outside temperature here, but i don't have any problems so i guess yours was heated more
but if you can, try changing the battery it may help
Random shutdown
I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.
Thanks for the replies everyone!
I received the following e-mail of HTC today:
Dear Oliver Loh,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Device.
I understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with rebooting and random restarts.
I believe that the reason for this is because of a hardware issue.
In order to rectify this I would like you to perform the following actions:
) Make sure your device is fully up to date:
Menu - settings - about phone - system software update - tick box - check now.
) If possible test the device with or without a (new) battery, SIM, SD card.
To assist you further I have attached links to the HTC Support Site which will enable you to work through the above step by step:
http://www.htc.com/uk/support.aspx
Once the above has been completed you may be required to do a factory reset, for your convenience I have detailed the steps below:
) Restarting or factory resetting your phone:
Restarting your phone (soft reset):
If your phone is running slower than normal, an application is not performing properly, or your phone becomes unresponsive, try restarting your phone and see if that helps solve the problem.
Please remove the battery, wait for a few seconds, reinsert the battery, and then turn the phone on.
Performing a factory reset (hard reset):
Note: Factory reset will not remove the data and files that are in your phone’s microSD card.
Factory reset is not a step to be taken lightly. It will permanently delete all your data and customized settings, and will also remove any applications you've downloaded and installed. Be sure to back up any data and files you want to keep before you do a factory reset.
Performing a factory reset via settings
Performing a factory reset using phone buttons:
If you cannot turn on your phone or access the phone settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the buttons on the phone.
1. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.
2. Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the VOLUME DOWN button..
3. Press VOLUME DOWN to select CLEAR STORAGE or (Factory Reset), and then press POWER.
4. Press VOLUME UP to start the factory reset.
Should the above solution not resolve your query please can you confirm the following and reply to me:
1) Has the device been recently updated/upgraded or changed:?

And today i can confirm the problem has occured 8 times today. Now it can do the problem up to 3 times in a row, when the device is in use.
It happened this morning 3 times, 2 in the afternoon, and as i am typing now, i just booted into recovery and the phone crashed on me twice at the recovery screen.
I will reply to HTC and tell them i have the stock rom etc, and will s-on my device and send it for repair soon hopefully
So what's your uptime since you changed??

I also suffered from this. A new Radio + ROM + cleaning some apps has solved the problem.

If the problem persists through multiple ROMs, it definitely sounds like a hardware problem. I'd return it to stock and have it sent in for repair under warranty.
Haven't read all replies... but this is a well-known battery fault (and isn't necessarily triggered by either heat or humidity... it is most commonly a manufacturing defect).
My very first HTC Desire S handset had almost exactly the same issue, only the battery from that handset would power off the phone only when the GSM picked up a signal (I.E.... you get reception, but the phone kills itself instantly. No reception, phone ran fine).
O2 replaced the entire thing under warranty (but I sneakily kept the battery to prove my theory). I placed that battery into my replacement handset, and behold.... EXACTLY the same thing!
Put the new battery in, everything works perfectly.
Bottom line: don't replace the phone, just replace the battery!

Hmm.. it does make a bit more sense that the heat could have affected the battery rather than the phone itself.
The battery is probably unable to run under low power that is used when put in sleep mode so it just cuts itself out altogether.
My hypothesis...
i have the exact problem!!
i thought i was the only one... mine turns off at least 3-4 times a day for no apparent reason.
at first, i thought it was the heat during the summer.. but now that the temperature is getting milder i dont really think thats the cause.
sometimes when i place it on the desk and i tap it or just bump it hard enough it'll turn off.
i think its more of a hardware problem then software.

That's sounds like a bad battery connection, I'd take it back under warranty {if possible} as the chance of a fried eMMC chip must be high!

Nexus 5 Problems: Static Screen.

Hello
The post is regarding the problems I've recently been facing with my phone, nexus 5.
I installed MM about a month ago and my nexus was working perfectly. However, after two weeks of the installation, my power button got extra sensitive and the phone would sometimes get into infinite rebote loops. I contacted Google and they said that it might be the faulty power button and asked me to factory reset. After factory reset the problem aggravated. In fact after two days of reset my phone would shut down and when I turn it on (through recovery) it will show Static noisy screen. Soon I figured out that if I allow my battery to deplet and attach it with charger, I can turn my phone on. However, as soon as i allow display to sleep, the problem begins again. When the phone sleeps, and I press the power button to wake it up, it shows noise.
So, I have increased the sleep time of my phone to help it stay alive for sometime while I look for a solution.
I would like to know, what according to you can be the problem? Is it the software or the display driver? Or is it the USB cable flex ( which can be the cause of problem as I read it somewhere)
I would be very grateful if you could guide and help me
Best regards.
Sidra
I am having the same issue. May I ask if you found a solution?
HI, I have the same problem....please can someone help us out here. Thanks
Sounds like it's the hardware causing the issue, not anything software/firmware. A new power button is extremely cheep off eBay (seriously, they sell them in bulk), so if you're not squeamish about opening your phone up, it might be worth the small cost for a new internal switch to see if this solves the issue. Go to ifixit.com for a teardown guide.

WiFi just refuses to turn on

When I tap the WiFi toggle option, either from top menu or from the settings, it refuses to turn on. It is the exact problem being shown in the video I've attached at the bottom of this post.
Details:
- The phone is Mate 9 (MHA-AL00).
- I can't claim warranty.
- I've tried wiping the cache in recovery mode.

This is really strange. Today morning when I tried to turn on the WiFi, it just turned on as if nothing had happened. Really strange.
So weird issue.
Check whether you have some special network management app installed on your device which would block the WLAN feature.
Anyone found a solution here
Hello,
For 2 days now, I have exactly the same issue with wifi and Bluetooth. As soon I switch them on, they get switched off instantly.
I have tried to reboot, safe mode, cache wipe, full factory wipe, but no results. This happened a month ago but came back to normal by itself. But this time it won't.
I contacted Huawei, they told me that my phone comes from China, where they have only one year warrenty, so they cannot it fix it in France even if we have 2 years warrenty here! Super!
Do you have any idea or tutorial on how to purchase and change the wifi/Bluetooth antenna?
Thank you for your help.
Great I'm on a MHA-L29C567 (US) model and as of about a month ago the same thing started happening me. I thought at first it was a radio update and reset the entire device back to stock but now the device is doing the same thing and worse now randomly reboots.
Really frustrating because I really love the phone but for the rear color camera focus sticking and this issue now. Looks like I may need to abandon the phone.
Your motherboard is crapping out, there is no other fix but a board replacement.
