curious, I have an htc one x rooted with viper xl rom. I got an update this morning and installed it to viper 4.1 but still don't have JB, does anyone know when I'll get this update. I'm in the U.S., I hold the home button, but google now isn't prompted like some say. when will it be available?

the new viper update was not jellybean its was just an update
Also, the JB update for ViperXL (when it comes) would almost certainly require a downloading and flashing a the entire ROM, not just an OTA update.
The viper update was bug fixes. I would assume that turge is working on a jb port but he's a busy guy. I would guess at least a week before we start seeing some stable jb sense ports (besides newts). Personally I can't wait for viperxl with jb

If you guys remember we got the sense 3 update leaked long before we expected it. I wonder if this will be the same for the ICS update. Anyone wonder if we will get a stable rom before the official release
It depends. We need people to leak the ruu

You won't get an official HTC OTA update on a rooted phone with a Custom ROM... and if somehow you do manage to get one while on a Sense ROM, DO NOT flash it... you'll end up in a bootloop.
As far as getting to use it, you'll get it on XDA much before people on stock ROMs (if history is anything to go by...). Hell, I think you might be running Sense 4 before HTC decides to give you Sense 3.6 officially.
Google search for details.

Yeah I think we will get 4.0 before 3.6!
I'm sure the RUU for the One V will be out before our RUU for ICS.
Can't wait

Hi guys, I'm looking for a ROM for my HTC Desire which could receive the OTA update notification once HTC releases the new ICS official version.
Now I have it with superkid's Andromadus build.
What do you think? Should I restore the official 2.3.5 in order to receive the official OTA when released? Or may I use something better till this happens?
Thanks!!!
Fallout with sense 4.0 and Virtuous Sense 4.0 Full are the best ROMs you can use, as OTA has only sense 3.6
choice is your

For both ROMs - WiFi Theter only works with Adhoc
And: there will be no "OTA update notification" with this ROMs because they are newer (Sense4) than our update (only Sense 3.6)
But it's not clear IF we will get an OTA or a ruu - so flash Fallout if you do not need other than Adhoc-hotspot - and be happy.
You can also flash the leaked Sense3.6 to compare with the 4.0 (and than you will not longer wait for the official update but for the source code for the devs)

you don't want to deal with official OTA because it'll never work on a custom rom. and if it did it would brake your root. so forget about it! the same day that it'll be released you can go to xda forum and get yourself a rooted version of it or whichever customized version based on it your heart could imagine. so, don't panic!
Ok, ok, I understand your opinions, as are the same that mine BUT, I'm giving the phone to my cousin and believe me when I say that she won't be looking for updates at XDA when (if) HTC finally release the official OTA update..
And of course I don't want to be such a tech service for this phone forever, and custom ROMs are always improving new versions, etc.. but there is always a bug to deal with.
I have been using Fallout for the last month, best ROM right now for the Desire S, but without wifi tether.. I can't give her the phone with it.
I think I'll return the phone to stock ROM and if HTC finally give us an ICS update, I'll install the RUU and forget about more mods to the phone.
Thank you all!!
You can also get ice-ds 4.2 as that will be almost the same as the expected OTA.

I recently upgraded my HTC One X to Android 4.0.4 and HTC Sense 4.1. But there seems to be a mismatch between the version number being displayed for HTC Sense.
If I go to "Settings > About > Software information" then it shows HTC Sense version as 4.1.
If I go to "Settings > Apps > All (tab) > HTC Sense" then it shows version number as 3.5.
Is this normal? Are these version numbers different? I didn't check this version number before so I don't know what was its original value.
I guess it's normal. Mine shows sense 3.5 under "apps" and sense 4 under "about". Not sure why its that way though.

Ok, mine says 4.0 also on Android 4.04, but in 4.0 you could not get rid of the 3 button menu thing at the bottom of the screen. With the 4.1 update you can go into Display, gestures & buttons then Recent apps button and it will give you 3 choices. 2 of them will get rid of the 3 button menu at the bottom of your screen. The 2 choices moves the menu button down to the recent apps button. From what I can tell that is the only difference between 4.0 & 4.1.

I was about to say that too. I'm on 4.04 and have sense 4.0. I thought htc wasn't going to release 4.1 until December sometime.

Unless it was updated and the only thing they changed was Recent app button choices and just kept it at 4.0. I know when I first got the phone the 3 button thing drove me up a wall and I was reading on another forum that with 4.1 you could get rid of the buttons by going into Display, gestures and buttons to change it. So I tried it and it worked. Some apps appear a little stretched but that's it.
Was it an official update or just a custom Rom? Maybe the custom Rom is just a hack of things.
It was an official update

It was an official update. I have not rooted the phone or installed any custom ROM. Also after the update the UI seems to be a bit sluggish.

Is your update also officially from HTC, I mean your phone is not rooted and no custom ROMs?
Maybe HTC forgot to update some of their strings?

It must be that they updated it and didn't change the number because I can get rid off the 3 buttons at the bottom. And I'm on sense 4.0

No my phone is not rooted. I'm on 2.20 and at this point there is no root available.
Hey guys,
I have the latest official OTA Update for my HTC One S on Bell.
Version 1.84.666.9
Sense 4.0 instead of 4.1 tmobile version
Android 4.0.3
I do not have the possibility to change the Recent apps button.
I would like to stay on stock rom just to avoid flashing rom updates and deal with glitches.
Should I just wait it out for jellybean or should I change my CID to something else?
Help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Are you rooted? There are mods that you can flash on the stock ROM that will remap the recent apps button. Look here. Otherwise there is no way to natively remap the buttons without sense 4.1.
Thanks!
Will I still get the possibility to update or not? To jelly bean or what not..

Whoops what sounded like a success story ended in a brick story.
Lets wait and see if anyone can downgrade on their on accord without bricking before I put this back up.
Yeah, would be interesting to see if anyone does this and succeeds where I failed and see what procedural differences there were.

Umm I downgraded from jelly bean back down to the 4.04 version of viper Rom with no problems ?

That sounds like you had some random cooked ROM on your phone and not one of the official HTC 3.17 updates that delivered official JB 4.1 to the One XL.
Some random cooked ROM can be changed whenever, there is no story in that.
A phone that has a full 3.17 update including updated firmwares like hboot 2.14 etc is an entirely different story.
Many many users are on official HTC 3.17(JB 4.1) which severely impacts their ability to customize things.
Many are looking for a downgrade path back to previous HTC builds from the 4.0.4 era.

So you are either talking about a JB RUU or a JB OTA right? You are not talking about any of the 3.17 Roms that are in development are you? Just not real clear according to what has been posted so far.

I doubt you have more than a backup of a few partitions(system, data etc) but not the other 30 or so. That is not a "full backup" and would not reverse this issue.
This problem is not caused by the Rom installed on system hence why this is not a simple thing to fix so far. That is why a user that did everything that was previously required to downgrade ended up with a permanently bricked phone that required replacing.
Phones will begin to ship with 3.17 and newer HTC builds everywhere soon enough. Sticking our heads in the sand and thinking this is only an issue to those that accept an ota is very short sighted.
Also HTC is updating firmware things on the phone that could potentially be benefitial to the phone that users avoiding newer ruu and ota will miss. Afaik the dsp firmware is the i/o controller of the phone and has been updated in all HTC updates so far, it is likely more important to the phones correct operation than the radio firmware but is never really mentioned on xda.
