Root Without A HARD reset? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I have had many android in the past and have never had to reset the phone and lose everything to root.
I have had the Motorola BackFlip, LG Optimus V, HTC Inspire, Droid Razr Maxx, Droid 4 and not one Forced a reset to root why with this phone and will there ever be a all in one tool kit like the Ace Hack Kit from the HTC Inspire that was the far best root and only took 3 minutes to unlock the boatloader, root, S-off, and sim unlock.

Its possible but why do you need that data? Anything you need you can backup to a PC, even apps can be backed up using adb backup
Besides any ROM you flash you will have to wipe before running it
I suggest doing some research on your part to understand the process better, if you are used to one click toolkits then there's a chance of you bricking your phone if you aren't careful.
Everything you need to know can be found here on xda or with a Google search
Also, this is in the wrong section. We have a Q&A section

I have been flashing rom and rooting my androids since 2010 I know that if I'm going to go and flash a rom I have to wipe everything but I prefer to use Titanium Backup to backup your apps plus the data of the apps and It's a lot faster then adb. also just so you know I'm not dumb I do know how to root the phone and everything I just prefer not to wipe my phone since I haven't ever had to in order to root.

Every device is different, and HTC is constantly updating its security schemes to make it harder and harder to root and flash custom ROMs. So you need to forget what you know about past devices, as they no longer apply, and you need to get used to the fact that its going to be more and more complicated moving forward.
Either use adb or cloud methods to backup what data you need, otherwise you just have to suck it up and do the factory reset and start from scratch after you are rooted.

I'd advise you to slow way down and not do anything until you're more familiar with this phone. It's guys like you who've gotten into the most trouble because they barge in here assuming that because they've rooted and unlocked other phones they already know what to do with this one. Then they go blundering around and hard-brick because they assume stuff that worked on their last phone should work on this one. I've seen it happen repeatedly, whether it's trying to use "universal" one-click methods that aren't supported, trying to flash recoveries and roms with ROM Manager (also not supported), or flashing ports of their favorite roms without realizing that they're for the quad-core HOX version.
This phone has some idiosyncrasies that aren't present on other handsets and you can easily perma-brick it if you aren't careful.

This has to be one of the most retarded Op's I've come across in a while.
You don't like the root method, make your own. If you can't, go buy some tissues and cry in the corner. We don't want to hear it:beer:

Ugh thank you was sweating bullets for a minute
Im guessing thats not the right way to remove ATT stock apps? lol I been browsing forums but can find nothing for HTC Inspire 4G
If your not to sure what you should or shouldn't delete, then the best thing for you would be to just flash a stock rooted rom. Like clearD, tcp, or dilligaf.
Titanium backup is the right way. Why don't you try twopumpchump optimized stock Rom in the development section. We're very helpful over there and will walk you through it. You can flash a ROM that already has the bloat removed.

I was attempting to remove the blockbuster app lol
Im kinda nervous to flash roms, I spent 3 hours last night reading/prepping myself for the root, was so nervous of a brick (btw new android user came from iphone) I have a buddy who had a nexus he bricked trying to flash the cryageon rom which is a well trusted rom. Just really scared >.>
Plus will flashing a rom remove contacts ect?
It's not as hard as you think. Take your time though. Best to do your research. Check out the Rom I suggested though and drop in if you have any questions.

As long as you have them saved on your sim no. Personal data yes. Apps not if you back them up. Make a nandroid back up before flashing. All you have to do is download the rom, place it on your sd card. Then boot into recovery install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, pick the rom select yes. You just flashed a rom.. As far as I know no one has completely bricked their inspire, even the people who have had corrupted boot loaders have been able to recover.

Honestly, I haven't had a chance to sit down at my desktop and try and mess around with it, college has taken up a lot of my time. I will say its a lot more complex then people think it is. It makes me really appreciate the people who bake roms and make themes.
I will probably sit down this weekend try tweeking a few things, and hopefully get it to work with out boot looping. Makes me wish some one lived around here that could teach me a few things I am a visual learner. I will get one working though .

Unlock at HTCdev then use the above link(paulobrien method) it works with US T-Mobile also. Its as simple as connecting phone to PC and installing the file. Presto! Root!

quick edit: i used obrians method, worked good and everything works fine, started up normally with a little lag then smoothly continued, im figuring that thats it....now for a rom anyone has a good rom that is good, i like the same default one that was with the phone, but all i wanted to do was keep everything and just completely take out the bloatware....i dont mind having the themes changed i just want the bloatware out of this amazing phone. thanks for helping me out.

When you start calling people names, you are the one that appears immature and childish, no matter how correct you may be.
The problem is, though, you are not correct. Maybe it only appears as a "simple" mistake to you, probably because you don't care or haven't spent enough time in the forums, but for people who frequent XDA then it has become a cumulative nuisance.
Also, when the majority of users responding in the thread you started is either questioning the logic of your statement or placement of the thread then maybe you need to reflect on what you were trying to accomplish and maybe take into consideration how you can achieve better results in the future. Long story short, try to learn from your mistakes.
Okay, so, International One x won't be compatible because of hardware differences, but what about the One S roms? I just tried flashing the CM9 port for the S, and it flashed successfully but upon reboot the screen was just filled with green graphical glitches. Rebooting back into recovery and attempting to restore my backup of the stock system didn't work at all, so RUU for me... but, why wouldn't a One S ROM work? It has 99% of the same hardware... besides the qHD screen. I remember being able to flash a Droid 3 ROM to my bootloader-locked Atrix 2 and it booting up just fine. What's different here?

Looks like the devs are not working on Root for 1.85

Arg....seems like the devs have moved on to getting s-off and coming out with new roms and have given up on finding exploits to root 1.85. The threads for root have been empty for a while now...wondering if its time to exchange the phone or return it and want for the sg3?

You can. That is what I did. It's pretty simple.
Revert to 1.82, root,
one click superCID
relock in fast boot
ruu 1.85
flash the unlock token from fastboot, it took me a few tries before it took
flash a recovery (twrp is working well for us right now)
and then use the recovery to flash the SU zip file. Then you're all set
Well this is how it works.
Once you update your RUU to 1.85 then install CWM (flashing utility in recovery) You will just flash the Rom you wish this will give you root.
Hope this clears things up?
I'm unclear on the rooted 1.85 but from what I gather you have to have done superCID hack before upgrading to be able to gain root. I believe you have to also have superCID to do ruu to a previous firmware. I may be wrong but if your on 1.85 without superCID I think your SOL for now atleast.

Yes, it's simply amazing how many people will write such non-useful crap that serves no useful purpose.
Look, we've all been there. We all had to learn from the beginning at some point.
I'm also sick of people lobbing ignorant comments my way when it comes to some of the things I do for others, especially here on xda. Case in point ...
Over the last three days I've prepared a 36-page manual that describes, in great detail, how to do virtually everything on a ONE X. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
It's sad when, after working an average of 70 hours per week as President an owner of my LED lighting company, plus having a 2-1/2-year-old at home, who's a wonderful challenge, plus having issues with my 82-year-old mother suffering from Alzheimers, I still MAKE time to help others, most especially here on xda. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. As I said above, we've all been there, and I'm quite sick and tired of so many others (THEY shall remain nameless), who can't spend a few extra seconds of their precious time to provide a better explanation than the simple "just do it in fastboot," or "use adb," etc.
Yes, I've now learned exactly what these two simple statements mean, but it really would have been nice, and far, far, far easier not just for me, but everyone if, instead of saying the following ...
flash it in fastboot
...they instead said something like ...
open a command prompt, navigate to your adb folder, and flash in fastboot using the following line:
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img
Wow, it took me an extra 10 seconds. Oh, my goodness, my fingers are now so sore. I think I'll head to the hospital. Be back later.
Peter
P.S. And don't anyone dare tell me, like someone did yesterday, that I should basically shut up and stop "sassing" (their word) the developers because they work so hard at what they do. You know, I probably work as hard if not MUCH harder than most of them, yet I will always try my very best to give some of my time to others. Again, as I said above, it's the right thing to do. You know, maybe if more people did just that, the world wouldn't be so full of self-centred, egotistical ingrates.

It also seems like Samsung devices are not as difficult to deal with than HTC and the locked bootloader and S-On.

read that post...this allows you to downgrade...with you can get root...
however...you have to get some $$ off of your pocket..

You mean the one linked in the post I just quoted? Like I said, that one says it requires root.
Lots of people are saying "just downgrade" on this thread. But I don't think its possible.

So only option is to get a new OneX and hope it has 1.82 or below? I'm not even sure root and ROMs are that critical to me but just curious

You have installed something to make it slow. Since every One X I seen and used did not lag on opening the app drawer. Not seeing lag.

I've seen where some people say that it lags a little when they open it for the first time after a reboot or it sitting idle a while. It's happened to me a few times also.

Stuck in bootloop

So, I'll admit that this is my first android phone and I'll admit that I didn't take a bunch of time to learn anything about what I needed to do before rooting and unlocking and flashing and everything else.
My problem is, I've unlocked my bootloader just fine and I rooted my phone just fine. The problem came when I found Android Revolution HD, from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562603, and wanted it. I didn't understand how to flash a new ROM or anything, but I went ahead and tried. I flashed several different boot images and recoveries so I don't even know where to begin. I flashed recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.0-endeavoru and tried to use the boot.img from the link I posted. Now I can't boot into recovery or restart my phone or even do a factory reset. I'm afraid that I messed everything up to the point where I need a new phone or something. I know I should have spent more time with this before diving into it, I was just excited. Is there anything I can do? I'm sorry if my problem is vague..

first of all, you flashed a ROM and recovery not meant for your phone. Our One X is a snapdragon based phone codenamed evita.
can you get to boot loader anymore?
if so relock it
then install the factory RUU that matches the version you had before, probably 1.85
then spend about 2 or 3 weeks reading the threads in OUR development section before you unlock the bootloader and flash anything else.

Ugh, I am so sorry and embarrassed. I plan on spending a lot more time with this once I get my phone back to working..
I relocked my boot loader just fine. I'm not sure where to find the RUU. I was on 1.85, yeah. I really really appreciate your help..

Thank you so much. Like I said, I really appreciate it. Weird question I guess but, where would you recommend I do some reading? You mentioned reading the threads in our section.

My friend, might I add you are very, very lucky you don't have a flagship phone that only gives you a reflection lol. A lot of others have rendered their device useless by flashing international ROMs and mods.... I suggest you subscribe to this forum, and ONLY stay in this forum! Make sure you take this as a valuable lesson!

This mistake is very easy to make for someone who just bought a phone. I know that the credo at XDA is rtfm but the mods of the respective forums really ought to make the effort to make the distinction more obvious.
HTC and AT&T should have done that.
Seems pretty self explanatory to me.

Ahh, you are correct. Been on here so long haven't had to actually search for XDA on google.
One problem is when you search xda one XL in Google, the first link is actually the correct forum.... however right under that it lists:
HTC one x Q & A
HTC one x Themes and apps..
Etc etc...
↑↑↑↑↑↑—— if you click on those options it goes to the International threads.. once your in its very easy to go on not noticing your in international waters. Ive caught myself in wrong forums more than once when xda app acts up and I use a browser....

I know I made the same mistake in my first ROM flashing experience. And I even knew that ROMs for the International One X were incompatible! I just had no idea what "endeavoru" meant.
Since then, I've been keeping track of many HTC One X terms, which I highly recommend the original poster take a peek at.
HTC One XL Terminology Glossary

Revolution HD seems to be a popular ROM for the International One X. Maybe they should explicitly note in the OP that it will likely brick an AT&T One X if flashed (if they don't already!)
This may also be a good thread to take a look at (if you don't feel bad enough already!)
