Advice on my new phone choice - General Questions and Answers

Right now I have the Nexus S 4g. Love everything except the battery life (which has just took a huge step for the better) and the quiet speaker. Just updated it to AOKP Jelly Bean Milestone 1 and wow what a difference from CM10. But soon, I'll be forced (by the wife) to switch to Verizon, and I'm not exactly impressed with their lineup of phones, but I'm sure there are some that are worth looking at.
So anywho, this is what I look for in a phone...
-Screen resolution (I'm a sucker for a beautiful display, thank god for VooDoo Color on my phone)
-Battery life (I'm a hardcore texter, and frequently check my email, facebook, and a lil bit of web browsing. If it can get 10-12 hrs, I'm happy)
-Performance/Design Quality (Not a huge issue on the phones I'm interested in at this point, but could be if there's something new)
-Easy to Root/Mod with a strong community base!
-Size (Yea... it's gotta fit in my pocket... lol So "phablets" are out.)
Here is what I have for contenders so far...
-Samsung Galaxy SIII (not crazy about the design, but it has great specs and a good community base)
-HTC Droid DNA (sleek looking, nice specs... idk anything else)
-Galaxy Nexus (a little out of date, but great community base)
-LG Spectrum 2 (sleek looking and nice specs, pretty interested in the Optimus G, but it's only for Sprint)
-Moto Droid RAZR MAXX HD (not crazy about the design, but love the battery life and has a nice display)
Is there any phone I might be missing? And should I go for an IPS display or is the IPS display technology not worth it yet? Only thing I'm worried about on my list is the ease of rooting/modding the HTC and the Moto. Had issues with both manufacturers in the past. The LG would be a whole new ball game for me, but it is definitely a sleek looking phone.
Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

I would go with the galaxy nexus. Very budget friendly (for the CDMA verizon version) and you cant go wrong with a nexus device. The nexus s was updated to jellybean, so you can expect google to update the gnex for at least the next year or two.

I liked it for that reason as well. That and its basically bigger better version of my ns4g. Only thing that I didn't like was that people were complaining about the battery and quiet sound, same issues as this phone. Was hoping they would have corrected that. Although, battery can be addressed by a custom ROM.

S3 has a big community and development is strong there. The DNA is nice but a small non removable battery and no expendable storage is a deal breaker

I think best choice for you will be, if you take SGS3.. or maybe NEXUS 4 will be great choice.. it´s with performance compared to high end phones, and it´s cheap

If really care about the screen go for the DNA thanks to his beatiful 1920x1080 display wich is the double compared to its competitor, I wouldn't suggest it if you care more about modding.

Nexus 4

Go with either the Nexus 4 or the Galaxy SIII. I don't think you can go wrong with either phone.

If I could get the nexus 4 for Verizon, I would, but its not a CDMA phone from what I've read. So basically my best choices so far are the sgs3 or gnex... or is there something better on the way this coming year?

[Q] opinions wanted on Nexus/Rezound etc??

I need to buy a new 4G phone soon.
My Wife needs a phone (she does not have data now but wants it) & we don't want to miss the temporary 4G for 2G tiered price deal.
I figured I would buy the Galaxy Nexus if/when it ever comes out. I have both an upgrade available & a couple hundred dollars in credit from VZ.
I will probably buy from BestBuy so I can get the 30 day return/exchange policy. Right now, I have a Charge running 2.3.6 GB, imoseyon 4.0, fuju tweaks, Launcher Pro Plus, coredroid theme etc.etc.etc.
My Charge flies (2400 in Quadrant) & I absolutely LOVE the thing (no lag whatever, not a single FC etc.). With the camera button mod, it is almost the perfect phone IMHO. This makes it tough to decide what to do as I figured I would give my Wife the Charge & buy the GN for myself (the Wife could care less which one she has).
My problem is, my Boss just bought a Rezound & with all the bloatware removed it is an AWESOME phone. I am now tempted to buy that instead of the GN. The Rezound has a jaw-dropping screen with its better rez than the iphone. It is fast as hell (especially after I installed LPP+) & should be rooted sometime in the next few weeks. Not everybody likes it, but I'm no audiophile & I think the beats sound is really a plus for listening to it all day at work.
I am looking for peoples opinion of the Rezound. It already has an extended battery & cover available (I love this with my Charge) & definitely has a few advantages over the GN. I do wish the screen was slightly bigger but it is what it is.
I may just buy the Rezound, & then if I don't like it hopefully by that time the GN will be out & I can swap the two.
Any opinions welcome, good or bad.
~John
In my opinion, go with the Nexus. You'll get constant updates and have more dev support than any other phone. I'm sure the screen will look great too.

I know you're right about the constant updates.
I'm not so sure about the screen. I am a little paranoid about a pentile screen, the guy at the desk next to mine has a Razr and I think the screen blows on that phone although I realize the GN is much higher rez.

Yeah, I haven't had the chance to see the RAZR yet. A buddy of mine is in the market to upgrade from his OG Droid and said the RAZR screen looked bad in person--he's waiting for the Nexus now.
I think you're going to have to do what he's doing, which is waiting for the Nexus to get in stores so he can see and play with one in person.

Some people may like the Razr screen, it is quite bright and saturated/colorful.
found this:
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/11/29/screen-comparison-galaxy-nexus-vs-droid-razr-vs-htc-rezound/
The lack of resolution is blatantly obvious to a lot of people (like me) however.
I had a Razr briefly, but hated the screen-lack of a removeable battery etc. (I have really been spoiled by the ridiculously good Charge screen) & passed the Razr on to a coworker. To me, it was really obvious that it was a pentile screen especially on text, straight lines, gradient screens etc etc etc
~John
You shouldn't worry about Pentile on GN as the high resolutions make it near impossible to see the pixels. As for Razr, I've played with the phone at the store, the Pentile is very visible (for me).

+1 here. I am tired of waiting on OEMs to update software and release source code. (I also don't like any of the OEM UI)

After some more comparison, I will definitely be waiting on the Nexus.
Comparing my Charge side by side with the Rezound, I just realized how much wider the Charge screen is. I really like the wider screen setup a LOT & the GN has the wider screen config also..
My old DroidX that I absolutely LOVED, had that same tall narrow config. That was really the only thing I didn't like about the X design.
I really like using portrait orientation a lot, & the skinny screen forces you to do a lot more side to side scrolling on internet sites etc. I just like the look of the shorter wider screens also, even if you disregard the functional issue.

+1 for Nexus.

if not Nexus I'd go with the Rezound... there's not much dev work on it because no s-off yet but the devs are close, also I like the screen and wouldn't mind Sense as an overlay (of course when custom ICS roms come out they'll be stock aosp), if the Nexus release is gonna take much longer or if its really gonna be 750+ off contract I'm just gonna hold out and probably go with the Rezound

Yeah I'm REALLY considering the Nexus myself. This was the best phone of the original 4G bunch, but the lack of dual core, ram and a higher resolution are leaving much to be desired. I really made up my mind when I saw the review on Phone Arena for the Nexus. I'm getting bored lately of Android in general (just a phase I go through about every 2 years with mobile OSes) and I think ICS would invigorate my desire to not jump back to Apple.
Getting the pure Google experience and knowing all the previous Nexus's have VERY strong communities is just another perk for me. I think the Rezound will turn into a Charge type of community later on in life, with rom releases getting farther and farther apart. Coming from an original Droid, seeing this community dry up hasn't been fun and I havent been able to load a new rom every week lol. It's just getting a bit stale lately for me.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus vs. Galaxy S II vs. RAZR

Hello,
I'm considering buying one of these three smartphones: Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II and RAZR.
I love the amazing display of Nexus and ICS is surely really tempting , but I'm a little disappointed about absence of microHDMI and memory card slot. I'm also really afraid of the size because when I look at GSII it seems a little too big to me and when I realize that Nexus is even bigger..
RAZR has according to me absolutely fantastic design but I heard the camera isn't the best. I also read something about display issues in dark environment.
GSII is of course the oldest of these three so I'm a worried about performance, especially looking in the future..
Since I'm willing to spend quite a lot of money for a phone I want one that works perfectly smooth without any lags.
What would you recommend? Which one would you choose?
Thanks in advance for every opinion..
You say you're worried about the GS2's hardware being old, when it actually has the best of the three. You say you're worried about the Razr's screen quality issues in a dark environment, when actually all three are AMOLEDs and so will have some issues, namely in dark environments (I own a GS2, and it definitely does).
Personally, I'd go for the Nexus (which I'm selling my GS2 for). It has the pure Google experience out of the box, without me wanting to install cyanogenmod on it. It also has the best screen, and IMO the best design to fit in your hand. The RAZR looks nice and thin, but would it really be that nice to hold? The same for the GS2; its an excellent phone but with a boring and square design that not all that great to hold.
But you should buy the phone that you think will suit you best. All three will be perfectly smooth, as they all have great hardware and optimised software. If you think the screen on the Nexus is too big for you, then stay away from it. If you like the Razr's design, then go for that. And you can't pick a phone based on if its the newest, as everything is going to be bested in a few months. If you can't decide, then go take a look at all three, then make your decision.
Hope I was of help
I would choose RAZR.
The kevlar backing,i just love it
IMHO Galaxy Nexus is coolest one because It has Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, highest screen resolution of those 3 phones (720 x 1280). Things like camera, video recording format aren't important for me so I would go for Nexus, but it's just my opinion.
Definitely the SGS2..
Defenetly the GSII. Somebody stole mine, so I have a mytouch untill I get my replacement. The Galaxy is the best, its fast, has a beautiful display. It has a huge devolpment teams. 1.8Ghz overclocked, usb host enabled. You can hook up your keyboard and mouse. Game controllers, its amazing!!! Go for it, the Nexus Prime might be the new Dev phone. But the Galaxy has better specs.

Why do you prefer HOX over GS3

I just prefer HOX because HTC is simply better than Samsung . Btw many cries about the high benchmark in gs3 , who cares about benchmark? Both phone can run all things.
I love HTC and its sense. HOX is more better than gs3 in style. I prefer stylish phone than the crappy design.
This thread is to say why you prefer HOX not gs3 and it is no more comparison thread . Just to know why HOX is being liked over gs3.

B/c it multitasks brilliantly
Tegra 3 sounds bad ass and it's Nvidia and their optimized games are great.
Htc sense and stylish design. Gs3 looks like you're carrying a brick with a LCD screen which is capable of making calls. Honestly, it isn't out yet but that's the situation I see from It's visuals.

Mainly for design and the fact that I don't like AMOLED.
Add to this that the hate Samsung showed against Google in their presentation doesn't look good to me. And It looks like they changed some APIs on Android like the NFC one. I hope they didn't bring any incompatibilities with it.

+1 to that i knew Samsung were going to make a s3, i didn't like the look of the s2 or touchwiz (or what ever they are calling it) sense is such a nice GUI almost willing to say the best GUI.
well depending what might happen in the next week or so i probably end up going with the s3. Now before anyone says anything i love my one x and even bought it a few lovely outfits (cases guys come on) but it has been 3 replacements now and overall my latest phone does work fine but knowing that the left side of the phone is creaking and you can feel it not being in place properly is a big downer for me. Waiting to see if it gets replaced tomorrow or gets repaired..If replaced by HTC hopefully it will be a newer batch. If it gets repaired then i am sending it to my carrier and hoping they can not fix it and they say if i want a replacement or go for a different handset..then i am going for the s3.
See the closed threads for answers
Honestly, I prefer the One X, Because htc have greatly improved sense, and the build quality is great, I still have my nexus one and the build quality was unrivalled. Simply the best I've seen.
I tried the gs3 out at carphone warehouse a few days ago and the build quality was typical Samsung, plastic feeling, and the shape is just wrong, I hate the overly round corners and the back feels wrong again. My one x has a nice rubberized feeling and the HTC cover I got for it does it wonders. The dock I got with it is amazing as it syncs and charges my device. I also have the media link HD and it is simply astounding. Again, it is the best device I have ever used.

it is true. Sense is ten times better. But i am scared now if the next phone i get if it gets replaced will be just as bad as this one hence why i was thinking to get a different handset if my carrier can not fix the phone for me
They're both more similar than they are different. The same discussion's going on in the XL forum. I posted this there...
BarryH_GEG said:
There's actually a couple. Samsung has much broader and deeper carrier relationships all over the world and that helps them sell a lot more phones. The SGS2 absolutely trounced the Sensation and, at a similar price, people would have to have been diehard HTC fans to have picked the Sensation. The One X and SGS3 are a much closer race. And a lot of the "features" on the SGS3 are sexy but pretty gimmicky. How many people used the listen feature in Vlingo on the SGS2? S-Voice is that on steroids.
I had a i9100 and liked TW. Samsung does a great job at supplementing OS features and integrating them seamlessly. But if was far from lag free. Using the exact same apps the same way on the One X it is far more fluid. I haven't used Sense before so can't comment vs. the Sensation but other than the secondary weather animations being jaggy I haven't seen any hint of chronic lag.
There are four things that separate the phones:
1) The Display - The jury is still out on the SGS3 display. It's PenTile which matters to some and not others. Tests show it to be brighter than the GN (thank God) but not as bright as the SGS2 or G-Note. The One X is considerably brighter. Samsung has as many or more display consistency issues as HTC so differences between individual devices (QC) will be a draw. SAMOLED vs. LCD2 is personal preference.
2) Fixed Storage and a Non-Replaceable Battery - That will automatically disqualify the One X for some people.
3) Design - Without commenting, the amount of discussion regarding the SGS3's appearance speaks for itself. People will end up making buying decisions because of it.
4) Performance - There's no doubt the SGS3 will be king of the benchmarks. That'll matter to some but those that are practical will realize that the OS and apps we're currently using make differences in performance at that high a level almost meaningless.
Samsung fans will automatically buy the SGS3. HTC fans will go with the One X. The one’s in the middle will have to choose what matters to them most.

I like the way the One X looks and feels in the hand... very good looking phone
I prefer design and build of the HOX over GS3 and thats probably about it.
Sense "looks" nicer, but isn't better. TW is a lot more resource friendly and optimized than Sense IMO. ^^^I thought the i9100 was lag free and probably one of the smoothest experiences, especially the TW browser. Compared to everyone else, TW browser was amazing and is still probably one of the most fluid browsers i've used.
I guess for now I'm gonna say the Camera on HOX is even with GS3 or better as GS3 is focusing more on camera software than the hardware.
So far, prefer SLCD2 over SAMOLED HD, though both are great. Only problem is the goddamn flickering on light grey colors.
Otherwise, GS3 has better SoC though I was hoping for a 28nm dual-core similar to S4, software out of the box I will say is better. Build quality is up in the air, but from experience, Samsung has much better QC compared to the HOX, which is suffering from an epic number of problems.
In general though, I'd say the GS3 and HOX are definitely a lot closer compared to the GS2 and Sensation where GS2 was an easy choice IMO.
I'm mainly keeping HOX for build and design, I think the GS3 is super ugly though the white one is beginning to grow on me a little bit.
Beats audio. Blllaaammmm *****es

Sense - more feature rich than TouchWiz
Screen - better contrast than SGSIII samoled. Also, better brightness, subpixel density/size.
Looks - imo, way better looking than SGSIII.
Body/touch - polycarbon unibody - better than cheap plastic Samsung uses (WHERE IS MY CERAMIC BODY?)
I really don't get where people always say sense is 'Un optimised' and 'Laggy'
Personally, Coming from Touchwiz to sense, I'd say sense is very well optimised, and maybe I'm retarded but Lag doesn't seem to me occurring for me.
Anyhow, this thread will be closed soon.

Any former Skyrocket owners who switched

Wondering about experiences as well as difference in battery life.
Thanks,
G
I switched from the skyrocket. I loved my skyrocket at first but the plastic and the build quality just drove me nuts. Also my headphone jack was broken on my skyrocket also so I was indeed looking for a new phone. The HTC one x, may have a small battery, but the screen, updated processor, and the build quality, just pwn the skyrocket. Just hope an update launches soon to fix all the bugs in ICS, and maybe fix multitasking.
I have a skyrocket and LG nitro and the HOX. So far
Battery: One>Skyrocket>Nitro
Screen: One>Nitro>Skyrocket
Build quality: One>Nitro>Skyrocket
Loudspeaker: Skyrocket>Nitro>One
Expandability: Nitro=Skyrocket>One
Performance (Theoretical): One>Skyrocket=Nitro
Performance (Real World due to memory management): Skyrocket>One=Nitro
Hope this helps.

Yeah. But the HOX has surprisingly been able to get me through a day of moderate to heavy usage which is great. Probably because school is spring semester is over and I hardly use my phone at home that much.
I liked my Skyrocket at beginning. Loved it when i started to run ICS on it. Then i went to ATT store and saw One x - got instantly into love. just like you are walking on beach or mall and see a chick got more curves then your GF - you feel like you missing so much into life!! feel like want to catch the chance!! which what i did..
Seriously though - i loved my skyrocket - but i always hated samsung's build quality and their crappy touchwiz - in opposite i always loved HTC's build quality but hated there chunky design, buggy sense and less than average battery life.
HTC One X get all my dreams fulfilled - the best android phone i ever had (i started android journey with my beloved DROID) that is better than iOS in everything including SCROLLING.

I also switched from the Skyrocket.
Even though One X has a larger screen than the skyrocket, it feels smaller in the hand and 1 handed use is tad easier.
It looks oh so much better than the Skyrocket. The sense UI is alot more pleasant than Touchwiz. Even though sense has it quirks, looks wise, it's great.
Battery life has been VERY good for me on the ONE X. Especially standby.
Screen is absolutely amazing on the ONE X.
It's a good step up from anything AT&T offers in my opinion, can't go wrong with it.
To top it all off, we can expect TONS of development for the ONE X line from our dev community. Skyrocket was never a popular choice, though it had a dev community, it was rather small.
i went from a skyrocket, to the note, and now the htc one x. the battery life is a lot better IMO. i was never really a fan of htc before, but ics + htc has been an awesome experience so far.
the s3 will have to be pretty awesome for me to go back to samsung.

Haha, I found it laughable that the 2 points that made the GS3 win were not related to the actual phone, but instead branding.
However, I can agree with the point. For general consumers, that is definitely a plus. Also, it was a competition on which should be THE Android flagship, and that makes the points even more prevalent.
Most Androids just don't have good presence or accessory support.
I can agree with the decision, but still think the One X is better as a general phone. Especially once ROMed up. When we get source, we'll be blazing!
Thanks for contributing. It was definitely interesting
Great video. I actually kind of agree with your conclusion...the S3 might be the better "flagship", but I'd prefer using the One X on a day to day basis.
When comparing these phones, for me it always comes down to this:
Software can be improved and optimized, hardware cannot. The multitasking issue is already largely mitigated in many custom ROMs, and that situation will only improve once we get kernel source. With the S3, you're always going to be stuck with a pentile AMOLED display and what is, in my opinion, a lower build quality.
Still, having to choose between these phones is definitely a #firstworldproblem, because they're both A+ devices. It is a great time to be a gadget nerd.
Good review. Makes me happy to be sticking with my One X for the reasons you mentioned.
I have to say, his video makes the SGS3 look really appealing when viewed from the top. As soon as you flip the phone over, it's ugly as sin.
If we were able to have the back of the One X with the front of the SGS3 including the rounded corners, with the matte coating and materials of the One X, it'd be the best phone ever.
I really just like how the front of that phone looks. ><

Superior display, battery life and design are worth more to me than any other cosmetic issues. HOX wins hands down in all three features I care about.

This company, among others, sells battery back plates for the GS3, its made me seriously consider purchasing the GS3 over the One X.

Good showmanship Arcadia and nicely executed comparison. IMO though, there really is no clear cut winner. You can walk away with either phone and feel satisfied that you own a great device.

Nice rewiew...
I got to play with a DoCoMo (S4) SGS3 for a couple of days about two weeks ago while I was in Japan and compared it to my international One X. Other than the browser which Samsung always does an incredible job with, the SGS3 wasn't perceivably "faster." At least not after I loaded the same 93 apps I regularly use on my phone. Both phones are incredibly fast, noticeably faster than the previous generation of phones. I think when you get down to measuring performance of transitions in milliseconds it becomes irrelevant.
TW vs. Sense is personal preference. TW has been basically the same since the SGS1. Outside of introducing "ploink" and "tink" sounds TW3 and TW4 are 90% the same. Sense is an environment, TW is an OEM launcher and when you're actually trying to get stuff done Sense's comprehensiveness allows you to be more productive. When comparing in-built apps (social, e-mail, music) and integration Sense is a clear winner. If you don't like overlays TW wins because it's less intrusive. I'm surprised more people haven't noticed but TW hasn't been resized for the HD display and presents 20% less information. For example, in settings, you'll see eight options displayed in TW and 10 in Sense. That carries through in everything in TW and Samsung's stock apps. Coming from a i9100 I'm tired of looking at the same blocky, dark, and dreary interface. Sense seems brighter, more polished, contemporary, and is w/o question the better integrated UI.
Some stuff was left out of the review. HTC using partitions so the phone can be connected as mass storage vs. Samsung’s MTP is a big deal for people that transfer a lot of stuff back and forth between their phone and PC. You also don't have to screw around with drivers if you're using someone else's PC. That combined with slower NAND speeds as seen in AnTuTu leaves it half as fast at moving files as the One X. Samsung’s BT implementation is as funky as it’s ever been. The SGS3 had problems connecting and/or reconnecting pretty consistently where my One X never had an issue on the half dozen devices I tried both phones with. Also, A2DP on the SGS3 makes it sound like you’re listening to XM; there’s little separation, crappy range, and music is generally flat whereas A2DP on the One X is the best I've experienced.
As for the other stuff like a non-removable battery, weak multi-tasking and non-expandable storage, it is what it is. If those are hot buttons than the decision's pretty easy on which way to go and all the other stuff becomes secondary.
In case it helps anybody comparing the two phones, here's why I kept the One X instead of getting a SGS3 as I originally had planned.

P.S. - My comparison is to the international One X. I haven't even seen an AT&T version and don't know if some of the things I'm highlighting may be different between the two versions.
I just went to the Sprint store to look at the GSIII and was not impressed. I was seriously considering adding a line to my AT&T account so I can get it, but I have no interest in doing that anymore. First off, the color choices are ridiculous. I hate white phones (aside from the HOX which is just smexy) and the the blue really just isn't for me. Where's the black, Sammy??? I think the color, plastic, and overall shape of the phone really just belie the actual power of the thing, and I don't like that one bit. I am a big fan of industrial design, and as far as Galaxy phones are considered I think the Epic 4G Touch was the most attractive of them all. The screen on the GSIII, while having brilliant colors, was instantly recognizable as pentile and that to me is a major, major deal breaker. Compared side by side with the HOX, well... there's just no comparison. The HOX's screen smokes the GSIII's. The UI was incredibly smooth, I will give them that, perhaps even smoother than my HOX running CleanROM (which is ridiculously smooth), but after using Sense 4.0 for a while, I am once again not a fan of Touchwiz (I loved it on my E4GT). I think it too belies the power of the device because of how colorful and toyish it is. The whole thing just screams toyish and is really hard to take seriously as the powerhouse that it actually is. Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone, but I just can't see myself using it. I'm glad I got my HOX and am not jealous of the GSIII in the slightest.
The only thing that is even remotely making me THINK of switching is Developers FLOCK to the Galaxy S phones. They've all been rooted, bootloader lock isn't a problem, and they have source.
I love Android, but not for the stock experience. I like to play, and the SGS III has more to play with, or it least I feel like it will in short order.
Were it not for Scrossler's awesome ROM I'd be rocking a Gnex right now.
I hope to stick with the HOX for a while but if a deal comes up on Craig's list I'll have to seriously consider it.
Pretty fair assessment, thanks for the review. After using the One X for nearly 2 months I exchanged it for the SGS3. The screen is the only thing I am missing, and I miss it a lot!
Makes me VERY excited to know that phones with the total package are just around the corner. That's good news for everyone.
Nice job.
I change phones like underwear. I'm so on the fence right now.
So jealous of their multitasking ;(

Out of curiosity, are you running any custom ROMs, or are you still on stock?
