[Q] data usage and calendar - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi Everyone, I search everywhere and couldnt find an answer for this. So here goes.
Calendar
I was syncing and unsyncing with my samsung to google calendars, then the next day I checked, I realized all my events disappeared.
I did not erase anything yet all my events were gone.
I did notice that something was occurring during the period that I lost my data.
I saw that my default Samsung browser on my smart phone went on a refresh loop on google home page. This was an issue on googles end and was resolved eventually.
This was one of google's problems. There would be an issue with google recognizing me logging on the google home page and gmail. This lasted for a week. I wonder if that caused my data to disappear?
There are a few links below describing what happened. I'm wondering if this is an issue with Google, samsung+google, or syncing in general.
if I can recover my lost events that would be great!
It seems like a lot of them has to do with smartphones syncing, which is what I did. Even if there isn’t a solution or a recovery for this, it would be great to at least get an understanding as to why this happened (so i can avoid it in the future). I am currently storing everything local to my phone and havne’t experienced any loss of information. It’s quite disconcerting that if I did use google calendars, at any moment, all my events can go missing.

DATA
My data usage resets either randomly (before the cycles) or there is a delay on applying cycles? My data usage basically self erased leaving the charts to show nothing and the apps still ahve the data used.

I realized that the data was still there until I started to sync with my TiBu to dropbox/google drive. Then my data went to 0 on the charts.
I was still able to see the data used per app, but nothing shows on the charts.
Although it may not be accurate I use this feature a lot. I would just like to know what makes it reset on its own?
My cycle is on the 2nd of each month and I lost it on the 15th.

Another issue is the vertical lines that shows you data used on each time period. I would like it to default to my cycle (so i dont have to readjust everytime) Does anyone know how to do this?
Thinking back.......I think I did have my cycle set as the 15th, but that was changed a long time ago.
Could it be possible that the change only takes effect after the cycle is complete?
For example
Jan 1, 2000. I set my cycle to the 10th of every month.
Jan 2, 2000 I change it to 25th of every month.
I think it will still reset on the 10th?

Email sync/slowness issue
I have my Captivate to automatically retieve emails every 15 mins but it does not, I have to go into email account and select refresh.
Also it is very slow when retieving/deleting email.
is anyone else having any issues?

Try a factory reset. It was taking SO long to push some emails from an account that is relatively empty so I just had about enough of that and decided to do a reset and everything is peachy. Instantly the emails started to load up into the inbox and 5 seconds later it was done.. Amazing!

I have the same problem. Any other than a factory reset? because reinstalling everyting and reconfigure all my phone that's a bummer.

I agree. Got a weeks worth of time invested in getting this thing set up and programs installed (and paid for).
Mine too doesnt do anything until I go into the mail program. It wont even save my changes I make in the email settings. I set mine to automatic, so they arrive as soon as i get an email, but it keeps going back to the 15 and 30 minute settings. This is my only issue with the phone.
Can someone who has done a hard reset try saving their settings to automatic, go into task killer , kill the email program and go back into email and see if it saved??
Instead of using the "email" program I use the "gmail" built in program and I get instant emails. But then again, I use gmail.
Same here. I use gmail for my personal account but for work I use the regular mail app on the phone. I also set up gmail on that app as well. The actual gmail app works great but my gmail account in the regular mail app doesn't--it will tell me I have gmail mail a couple hours after I have already looked at it in the gmail app and marked as read. Same thing with the work mail, things show up much later then they should.
Haven't found a way to fix it yet.
Are you guys using a task killer? If so and the email program is not ignored, the task killer will close the email app...which at that point is running services to retrieve your email.
In the same boat. I have both GMail and the Email program. Gmail is of course instant, however the built in email is horrible (at least with Exchange). I'm not killing it with taskkiller, and I've deleted and reset it up multiple times. I installed Touchdown and gave it a try, however it really didn't seem to make a huge difference. Unfortunately I think it's something we are going to have to endure until 2.2, which supposedly has Active Synch improvements.
I don't have experience with Exchange but really, a reset will speed up a lot of the loading screen "lag". That's the only thing that will.

And after the reset do you use a restore of titanium backup or do you have to do all resinstall manually and re-configure everything (like home screeens and apps)
The issue isn't so much loading screen lag, it's a long period of waiting to do anything (open, reply, delete) when navigation in the program. I'm assuming (more like guessing) that other phones simply make everything appear to happen instantly, and then perform the tasks in the background unlike on Android where everything is done real time.
For instance on my Blackberry and iPhone when I selected 5 emails and chose delete, all 5 would disappear and I could continue working. In Email I select the 5 messages, the program says Messages Deleted then I watch for 5 to 10 seconds as the messages are deleted one at a time, preventing any meaningful use of the program until the process completes. I've checked the Exchange logs, no errors or anything out of the ordinary. It works, just very slowly.
I had the same problem, but K9 instead. After a _lot_ of testing, gnashing of teeth, and pulling of hair, I think I've found the cause.
Email and K9 both appear to store stuff in the /data dir. This is the exact same location that others online have found to be drag-ass slow and the general cause for black screens and/or lag in general. Which pretty much describes exactly what was happening to me with Email and K9. Search here or at MoDaCo for more info on the lag issue.
The solution is to either hope Samsung can somehow fix the speed of the internal SD card or store data elsewhere. I'd be amazed if Samsung ever fixes the speed issue. And storing data elsewhere isn't an option build into either application. K9 might eventually have that feature added, but I doubt Email ever will. There's a potential fix shown at MoDaCo, but it involves rooting, updating the kernel, and partitioning an external SD card. Nothing difficult, but not for everybody.
Touchdown has an option to store data on the external SD card, so it shouldn't suffer the same problem. I haven't played with it yet to see if it does or not.
As for why Gmail seems to work ok, that's a little trickier. It stores under the same path as the others, but it appears to work in an asynchronus mode, relying more on what you have on the server and only checking the local copy if it can't hit the network. At least that's the best explanation I can come up with for why it seems to work much better than Email or K9.
I was using the Nexus One 2.2, with 2 different Exchange syncs and gmail... NO Problem at all.
Different story with the Captivate... Not rooted, with ATT bloat... hardly any other apps loaded, tried both popular loaders. The email is all most unbearable (and unacceptable), reminds me of the iPhone 3g, if not worse.
Hopefully we'll see a straight 2.2 build soon, or I'm really considering returning the phone (already sold my N1 for a chunk of change).. I have 27 days remaining for a return.
Stock 2.2 is the only way to go.
I'd love a stock 2.2 build! But... unless we get lucky with a major change in the driver for the internal (non-sd) filesystem, I don't think it's going to help with the e-mail issue (or the general lag/blackscreen issue) at all.
It's definately not the at&t bloat, I have mine rooted and all of the at&t apps removed. I definately think the data parition fx is the best route to persue.

You haven't tried a reset? The Email app syncs my GMail account quickly for me, however before I did a reset it was loading in my emails one at a time and was noticeably poor.

I just noticed a weird thing. I just checked T-mobile for data usage and found out it used data at time periods I did't even use the phone (working hours). Anyone having the same issue?
Got any apps or widgets set to auto-sync? That would be my first thought but 60mb seems like a lot for that to be the case.
I would call and ask...no way auto sync uses that much...

some app like email or facebook is syncing? If you don't want them to sync, turn off in options.
Also, did you check your wifi sleep policy? By default it is set to turn off when screen is not active. Change it to never option, to prevent cellular data usage.

Something like SugarSync could be uploading photos. Do you have apps set to auto-update through the market?
This is the problem with the Android phones and data plans that have caps. One app can suck up memory fast. It's so lame that we have to manipulate the phone so that we dont get ripped off especially when the culprit is the same apps that come with the phone. I shut off all syncing and updating plus I run Bloat Freeze and stop un-needed apps from running since I cant uninstall them...thx T-Mobile! I called T-Mobile on that also and they have no clue, they just told me to uninstall any apps I put on my phone and see what happens. So whats the use of over 100,000 apps if we cant even run a couple with out sucking the cap dry?

I have no mystery data use on my account. I have never had any kind of usage like this in the past year. I never shut off sync or updates.I run almost 100 apps and have never had this type of issue.
Try something like OSmonitor to see what is using network services....and don't blame Android . Guns don't kill people. People kill people....blah, blah

Thanks for bringing to my attention the concern I should have ofr viewing my data usage more closely...
I checked my data usage and something startled me that added to a issue/concern I had earlier tonight. I did a factory reset on my G2x as I intended to exchange it tomorrow and when I booted it back my market app automatically started downloading all the apps I had installed (yes, I logged into my Google account in the setup screens)... I did a little research on the matter of turning this function off but it didn't turn up much of a solution. Is this really something that can't simply be toggled off?...
I don't want another 154MB download on my data connection (without my permission plus I would've opted to use my wifi to download such a payload) Though I will admit I did all this at work earlier. I thought I could disable it by doing another factory reset and then quickly kill the sync feature via the power widget after logging into my Google Account on start up. It seemed to work for a bit but when things at work picked up again I left my phone idle in my pocket and it started downloading the apps from the market eventually anyway!
I get the lesson that I shouldn't be doing that sort of **** while at work but this really shouldn't even be an issue to begin with. Especially with a carrier that throttles your connection after certain amounts of usage...
And perhaps for some clarification on my part, can someone explain to me real quick that if my T-Mobile account has Unlimited Web, what amount of MBs do they throttle your connection at?..
It depends on how recent you might have changed your web connect plan for the phone. If you have been an on going customer then it should be 5gb, me being a new tmobile convert its only 2gb. but while having problems with my original cell plan 2 cs agents have told me that I have the 5gb plan. Made no sense but not trying to push it lol.
That extra data you see is your phone backing itself up to the Google servers. You opted for that option during the setup. So.... yea.. not the phone's fault.

Yes. I have auto sync on all the time, but reviewing the past couple days, those two were the two that uses massive data. I'm not a massive data user, but this had me concerned. I only have Facebook, gmail, twtter, and lotus notes sync..

Just check T-Mobile again regarding the data usage. Weird activities again. It showed I started to use the date starting at 07:56 (I was sleeping!!) and on 9:40, 12:30 and 1:22, all have the same data usage.
Yahoo mail...
If you are using yahoo mail, you will see phantom data usage.
It effects iphone, WP7, and Android. Yahoo swears that it's the "other company's fault."

I don't have other email setup other than Gmail and company's Lotus Notes traveler. But I do have yahoo messenger installed....
Be aware if you use regular mail (not gmail) as it can poll automatically every few hours. If some of the emails have pics or audio file (or presentation), it can eat a good amount of data without notice. I setup all regular emails to poll manually to avoid this problem (and you have more juice for battery).
Some weather app and news widget can poll data for update too.

I have my company's lotus notes limited to 2kb each email, so the chances of getting over 10mb is really small. Besides, I had the same setup since Vibrant and didn't see usage like this before.

Well good for you man. You're just a smart android user aren't you? Just because you mastered the Android OS doesn't mean everyone can. Leaving everything on as you do does pull small amounts of data and this is what he is talking about. Android is still a buggy OS and problems will happen for some. I myself have seen data used during the night when I'm not even using the phone. What Android should do is ask you everytime it decides to do something that requires a significant amount of data this way we know where the data is going. There's probably an app I bet. This should be built into Android just as it is in Windows so yes Android is at fault.

I am having this exact problem! I have multiple phantom downloads of 80Mb, 145Mb etc. It's really pissing me off. I called Tmobile, but since my cell is the only number I have, I have to find a land line to call them from. They said they couldn't really help me while I was using my cellphone.
My email accounts are set to never sync. I use gmail and hotmail. I unchecked the "back up my data on google's server" when I set up my phone. I've always uncheck auto updates from the market. The only app that I have that auto syncs is tweetdeck and it's set to update every 30 minutes. On my Inc., it was set to update every 15. In 4 days, it says I've used over 1gig of data. I've never used that much in such a short time. With my Inc. I've had to try hard to go over 2gigs of data.
Anyhoo, I guess I'm off to a Tmobile store to use their phone to call back tech support.

[Q] How can I fix a G2 stuck in "Upload Mode"?

I have a non-rooted, stock G2 (on T-Mobile) running Android 2.2.
Every day, as many as twenty or thirty times per day, the phone gets stuck in "upload" mode. The data icon shows that data is uploading (or trying to) and I am unable to use any data-related services (whether tethered or on the phone itself). When it happens it can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. The only way I can forcibly stop it is to completely shut down the radio by toggling airplane mode off then on, forcing the phone to reacquire a data signal.
I've tried resetting the phone to factory defaults, deleting every app, reinserting the SIM card, and even formatting the SD card. Stopping running processes doesn't affect the issue, nor does implementing a task killer to kill extant apps. I also don't have any reliable way of tracking how much data *might* be getting sent (where ever it might be going). I've toggled off background data, syncing, GPS, network location, etc. Anything user settable that could potentially impact data has been switched off, to no avail. But, even with those settings on, I've never (in the past) had them completely usurp my data usage by locking the mobile data into an upload state.
My three main concerns are that 1) I can't reliably download apps, check mail, send pics/videos, or other data-related processes. 2) I'm concerned that if something IS uploading, it may be uploading a LOT and adding to my 5GB per month throttle-cap on T-Mobile. 3) I don't know WHAT is being sent, or WHERE. For all I know it could be sending my private data and contact info to an unknown third party.
I've ended every endable process and killed or uninstalled every app possible. I can't seem to remove bloatware without rooting, which I'm not yet eager to do as this phone is less than 60 days old, and I'm otherwise very happy with it as is.
Any suggestions or recent information as to why this is occurring? I have seen a similar thread for a different phone (Incredible), but it was from over a year ago and there were no solutions (other than flashing a new ROM). I'd like to stay stock, at least for a while, but if there is no other option and the Gingerbread OTA doesn't resolve this issue, then I may very well go to CyanogenMod (which I was happily running on my previous phone, the G1).

Solved - Atrix 2 Battery Life Dropped in Half - K-9 Mail Issue

A few weeks ago, my battery life suddenly dropped in half. Previously, my phone could make it through the work day, but suddenly, it was dead in just a few hours after each time I charged it. And I could feel it getting almost painfully hot in my pocket.
I searched all over the web (including here) but found no one who had solved the same problem.
I tried some battery monitor apps (e.g., 'Watchdog'), but got no alarms. I tried 'BetterBatteryStats,' but trying to figure out the difference between 'Kernal Wakelocks' and 'Partial Wakelocks' seemed more like a science project than a troubleshooting step. I need this phone for work after all.
I did notice K-9 Mail show up a few times on the stock Android 'Setting-Battery' screen, but at first I thought nothing of it, since I'd been using K-9 for months with no problems, and it didn't show the kind of excessive drain that I was seeing.
But just on a hunch, I turned synchronization off in the K-9 Mail app. Viola! That was it. No more hot phone; no more dead battery. More searches specific to K-9 yielded only tips on how to make and read logs.
So I enabled logging in K-9 and turned synchronization back on. I am not allowed to post links here (because we are all presumed guilty until proven innocent), but you can search for instructions on K-9 Mail Logging (I found them on 'github.'). After an hour or so (I probably didn't need to wait this long.), I viewed the log in the 'aLogCat' Andriod app. Then, the problem became obvious. Several times per second, K-9 was trying to sync my 'Drafts' folder in my IMAP e-mail account and failing with an error - something about UIDs not matching (whatever those are). This activity was probably keeping the processor awake and running at full speed at all times. Since I don't care about synchronizing my 'Drafts' folder, I made it a '2nd class' folder to stop it from synchronizing.
Problem solved (or at least masked)!
I am not sure why the problem occurred to begin with (maybe the ICS update, a K-9 update, a change on the server side, or just another unexplained random Android behavior), nor its root cause, but it irritates the heck out of me that the Android OS has so little ability to manage (or even to indicate) a rogue app.
I'm hesitant to spend more time troubleshooting it further, but I thought I'd share this experience in case someone else comes across it.

Now I am having the same issue with my new Samsung Galaxy S4. I should notify the K-9 developers ...
Don't worry for km in s4...had same issue....it's battery problem...I had to buy a new battery as Samsung acknowledged made in China battery that initially came were defective..now they are providing made in Malaysia battery...The whole net is flooded with this problem of battery getting swollen and unexpected shutdowns...just check the battery for swelling to be on the safe side.

Question Daily WhatsApp error

I got my new S22 Ultra a month ago..i installed whatsapp..it stucks during restoring chat history…but i overcome this problem by forcing stop the app during the restoring process ( a solution i found after reading many threads.. untill nw it works but um afraid one day everything is lost. Also it takes much time to save hundreds of stickers again)..then everthing is ok for a month till 30 september 2022.
Since 30 September 2022, My WhatsApp has been messing up pretty badly. Over the last five days I randomly (and this is true - no errant reboots, no app crashes, etc.) get the error message "Something went wrong with your chat history" on WhatsApp, which has a Restore option under the dialog box. This is practically useless as the progress bar never successfully completes, but even goes back at times.
This forces me to reinstall WhatsApp, and pray that I don't have to start with a new chat database again. Because it takes multiple attempts to get back on the app. And i can't restore hundreds of stickers. This plunges me into another time lag, as the app's verification put in progressively increasing wait times every time I reinstall.Why i got this message over last 5 days every morning???How can i solve it without taking the restore option as it took me 5 hours trying to restore chat history and stickers???I hope you response quickly..
I have tried many solutions: clearing cashe..turning airplane mode on and off..reset networks settings…turn the mobile on and off…unrestrict whatsapp from battery saver…remove the backup at google drive..close whatsapp from recent apps…during trying to solve the issue, i noticed one day that the error occurs during backup is being uploaded to google drive so i choose never to backup to google depending on the local backup but i unfortunatley woke up the next moring and the error occurs once it was searching for new messages.
Please help to retrieve a permanent solution specially as i found many people suffering from this for months in many threads...
Hi, you probably need to let the program fully restore the chat database... Can you leave restoring during night, for example, when your don't use the phone? Did you give the app the proper rights to access storage, etc?

I tried but it always stucks at different points and if i leave it, it fails ending to an old group chat history... although when i force stop the app, the chat history is back completely.
switch to Telegram
Better yet switch to Signal.
