I wanted to take a moment to give review of the Poetic Slimbook Case for the Nexus 4. Their is already a general discussion thread concerning this case located: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006671. In contrast to the general discussion thread, I wanted to compare the Poetic case to the other possible flip cover option made by Nillkin.
General Description:
The Poetic Slimbook has a smooth textured leather type exterior that feels good to the touch. It is black in color with white stitching. The case has a solid feel and the clasp uses a magnet to keep the case closed. The front cover can hold three credit cards as well as an opening for cash or larger items. Additionally the front cover is reinforced to ensure it retains its shape even when stuffed full. The phone is held in place using a plastic molded holder. This holder has no padding, but does do the job of retaining your phone. The holder is adhered to another reinforced leather type back. The back has cut outs for camera as well as speaker. You have access to your phone's power button when the case is closed. To ensure access to the volume buttons with the case closed Poetic replaced leather on the interior edge with a felt type material.
Price: Currently $10.95 at http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-Slimbo...55313&sr=8-1&keywords=poetic+slimbook+nexus+4
The Nillkin case is a stark contrast to the Poetic Slimbook. Nillkin designed this case to be slim and premium. First off it should be noted that this case comes with a front and rear screen protector. I would compare the quality to my Clarivue clear screen protector that I already reviewed on XDA. The case is amazingly thin. Seriously it is as thin as my s-line tpu case. The feel in the hand is very solid and it has a ton of grip. The phone also snaps into a plastic molded holster. The difference is that the plastic holster is a little thicker and has the textured leather backing applied directly to it. The flip cover has a smooth textured felt lining and sits completely flat along the front. It does not have a tendency to flop open when not intended. The front has a cut out for the front speaker. The back has cut outs for the camera as well as rear speaker.
Price: $16.99 (US Seller) at http://www.ebay.com/itm/370717427970?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649.
Comparison:
First I will tell you I did take the time to use both of these cases for a few days before I posted this review. From initial impressions I thought the Nillkin case was a clear winner. It is amazingly thin and feels better than any other case I have ever owned. I love that it has a cut out for the front speaker and I can confirm that it works well closed while on phone calls. Another great feature about the Nillkin case is that it does work with my Energizer Qi charger. The Poetic does not. I can say is that I was shocked how much I liked the Poetic case once I tried is out as my daily. It is extremely convenient to have my cash, credit cards, ID card and drivers license all in one thin location. Fully loaded the Poetic case felt firm, well built and fantastic! I carried mine with 5 bills folded in half. I placed my drivers license in the back large pocket with the cash. I then used 2 credit card slots. It was about an inch thick. I found that if you place 3 cards in the front the case bulges substantially. I would expect this to improve as the case breaks in. I did not have a problem with the magnet keeping the case closed. I would recommend having a front screen protector on when using this case. The credit cards sit directly on the screen.
One thing I found interesting was that I was not able to actually change my volume with the Poetic case closed. It was a combination of not being able to find the buttons, and also the material being to stiff. In contrast I was able to press the volume buttons with the Nillkin case closed. This is not an advertised feature, but it worked well. Another design feature I found to be particularly helpful was the clasp on the Poetic case. When I set the case on a flat surface with the face up the clasp actually leaves enough of a gap underneath to prevent the muffling of the speaker. I know this was not by design, but I did find it helpful.
Which to choose?
When I bought my Poetic case it was $4.95. At that price I would say to without a doubt get both cases. When I am wearing my work uniform I like the Poetic. With jeans on I like the Nillkin. Now that the price is over $10.00 for the Poetic, it is much harder to justify. I paid a little more for the Nillkin case because I wanted it before I left for vacation. I still think it is worth the $16.99 price. Over the next few weeks as more sellers start to sell the Nillkin case I would actually recommend buying the $19.99 actual leather (smooth textured) Nillkin case. It would have the same design with a little higher material choice for a minimal price increase. If you wear loose clothes and can manage the size of the Poetic case it is extremely convenient (or use a back pocket if your ego can handle it). I would just wait for a price drop. If you like minimal bulk and want the screen protected the Nillkin is a great choice.
Please let me now if you would like any different pictures. Hit the thanks if this helped.
*Update* I wanted to give a quick update on the poetic case. I just finished using this case during a 10 day vacation in Hawaii. The poetic case was my daily. It went with me to every corner of Oahu from hikes to dinners to boat cruises, this case was it. I wanted to test the durability of the case as far as wear and break in as well as the strength of the plastic holder. I took the phone out at lease 2 times a day in my condo.
This case is amazing. While the nillkin case is starting to show wear and dirt the poetic case can hold more, and lies even more flat. I carried: 5-6 bills folded, 4 ID's, 1-2 credit cards at all times. This case always remained closed and lied as flat as it did with much less during my initial review. It folds back on itself very well for phone calls and the plastic phone holder is showing no sign of wear. I will post more details when I get back from the airport.
This looks awesome. Thank you for the link. Looking forward to your impressions on the case.

I don't get it. Why is this thread getting so much more attention than the last Poetic case thread? OP, you so popular.
Ooooh, a comparison
If I had cash to blow I'd just buy this on top of my usual TPU case. Sorta want the hard leather one too cause it seems more protective. If anyone gets either cases please do a short review on the defensive capabilities of those cases. Interested in these cause it gives a little defense for the screen too.

I ordered both of these! I also ordered the Poetic bumper for the N4. They have it on Amazon for $6, but it won't be in stock until Dec. 30th. Still, $6 over $20 + shipping on the Play Store is a great deal. I'll just wait it out.

Hi
I'm just looking for some advice.
I'm using a Spigen Slim Armour currently and whilst I love the case I find it's a little bit slippery and the lip on the front is a little too shallow for my liking.
I cant decide whether to get an Otterbox Commuter or Cygnett Workmate. I've never owned cases from either but Otterbox is a brand name I recognise.
I like the workmates protection --- the drop test is convincing but there are reports about the charging port being too small.
The otterbox looks like it might be a bit slippery and may not offer the same protection.
Any advice welcome!
Im using an Otterbox Commuter right now, it's not that slippery though but kinda bulky compared to Spigen..

Thanks I happy with a bit of extra bulk for the extra protection. The spigen is very stylish but I'm not sure how well it will strand up to being dropped.. and it's pretty slippery!!
If I were you I'd go with the workmate. But I personally use the UAG navigator case.

I realised I wrote defender..I meant the commuter case. The defender is just too heavy duty for me.

I currently use an otterbox commuter. I think for the protection it offers it's not that bulky.
It still easily fits in the breast pocket of my military uniform without being all that noticeable.
Plus otterbox has awesome customer service and warranty. I've gotten several brand new cases from them over the years when port covers broke off or if I had other issues with the case.

Just got the Cygnett Workmate Evolution today. It's a bit bulky but I dont mind because it's going to protect the phone. One thing that I just noticed and you also pointed it out was the phone charger wouldn't go in and it's true. I'm using the stock charger that came with my phone. I'm probably going to get a new charger or return the case.

No need to worry. Yes, the charging port is too small (narrow) for the stock S4 charger, but one sharp knife and five minutes later... problem solved.
I received my Workmate Evolution earlier this week, and got my S4 this morning. Sure enough, the charging port was too narrow. I took a sharp knife and raked it across the upper and lower surfaces of the case's port, holding the blade at a 90° angle to the surface. Thus, abrading it rather than cutting it. Took about five minutes.
In Cygnett's defense, the OEM charger plug is much bigger than any other micro USB cable plug I own.
Hours into owning the phone, I can say I'm happy with both it and the Cygnett case.

+1 for otterbox.
I've been using it since iphone 4.
I recall dropping it from 6 feet on concrete.
The corner of hard shell broke but my iphone was flawless. They also sent me a replacement case and honoured on their lifetime warranty policy.
As for s4 commuter, I personally find it a 'little' slippery but not as much as a naked s4.

I absolutely love both Otterbox and Cygnett. In the past, I've had issues with Otterbox's silicone warping out of shape. The new one on my wife's HTC One (which is identical to the one I tested on my S4 earlier) is way better than the older versions. Went with Cygnett this time purely based on aesthetics as I think the Cygnett looks wayyyyyy better.
The main differences in protection are that the commuter cases have the hard polycarbonate closer to the edges, while cygnett offers a wider tpu layer. The lip above the screen on the workmate is slightly higher than that of the Commuter. Cygnett's TPU is harder though I can't offer an opinion on if its better or worse (though it means the fit on the Cygnett is slightly better, espcially around the sections where the hard bits clamp around the soft bits). I think the hard shell is thinner but the TPU thicker on the workmate
Usage wise, the Cygnett is slightly grippier than the otterbox. The button presses slightly less mushy. The edge of the lip on the front is sharper and you'll notice it though it's not uncomfortable. I like the fact that the ports are uncovered, but the reports are right. The hole for the USB port is too narrow. I can't fit the original cable in, however it's not a deal breaker for me as I have 3 other cables and chargers. Nothing a sharp hobby knife can't fix though.
To be honest, unless the sharper edge on the front lip or usb port hole size are deal breakers, I would recommend the Cygnett. That being said, both are pretty good cases, and you can't go wrong with either when it comes to protection.

i bought the WorkMate over the weekend. love the case.

super tough bounced across the floor a few times already and no scuffs or anything removes easy to change out the battery and/or SD card
Hey figsalan101,
Nick here form Cygnett, mate.
Sorry to hear about that the charger port isn't lining up correctly with the WorkMate Evolution, we have had a few reports of this happening.
The issue of the charging port has been fixed and all of the cases we are introducing into the market now are working correctly. You entitled to a refund or exchange at the point of purchase if you'd like to.
Regards,
Nick
I went for the black Cygnett Workmate Evolution in the end and love it - thanks for the advice.
The ports are all correct - I bought it directly from Cygnett's website and I guess they have fixed the issues with the earlier ones.
The buttons are still a little stiff even after a couple of weeks use.. but it's a small price to pay for the protection.
I have dropped it once already when getting out of my car. It bounced on my driveway a couple of time without any visible damage.
I still like my Spigen Neo Hybrid, Slim Armour and UAG Scout but none offer the protection I need at work... and excellent grip.
Just saw this pop up on Amazon so I ordered a smoked grey one.
I loved ringke cases on all my nexus phones. Very good quality. I have the Samsung flip cover case, generic hard plastic case from eBay, and the Incipio dualshine pro case. I prefer the wallet case right now. The hard plastic case from eBay fits great and keeps the phone super slow and sleek but provides almost no protection.
The Incipio is a tad bulky since it's dual layer protection.
I'll let u all know how the ringke is.

I went through two already the bottom left corner of both of them were warped. It fit and felt good everywhere except the bottom left ...good luck with yours.
My bottom left is warped also.. other than that case is good

Mine's expected to arrive on the 1st. Never used this company before but seems pretty slim so shouldn't add too much bulk. I don't drop my phones...seriously! My concern is scratching while sliding on a hard surface.
Do you have a picture of what it looks like and also what the warp

This Ringke case is nowhere near as good as the similar model cryatal case I have for my note 4, as you can see it only has a 3.5 star rating on Amazon. It has a feel of a $3.99 case. But right now there are only a few cases to chose from, so what can we do.
Really like the ringke
Here it is with full screen protector on
Decent case
I received my case on Saturday and I am pleasantly suprised with it. I needed a case because the UAG case I ordered has been put on back-order. I received the smoke edition and it gives my phone (black) a sleek unique look. I've read a few people had warped cases but mine was fine and provided a good snug fit. Case doesn't add bulk to phone and fits my hand well. Keep in mind it is a gel case so it wont protect the phone from a lot of drops but is an excellent case for me until my UAG case comes in. In addition it was only $12 and free 2 day shipping.
Here are some pics of the case you requested.

I don't know about anyone else but the top of my phone doesn't fit securely into the lip of the cover. I can literally run my thumb across the top of the case to separate it from the phone. That's means big trouble if I dropped the phone. If you get this case you still have to be wary of damage if dropped because no way it'll will stay in this case so this should be temporary until you can get a better case ASAP. Really a shame because Rearth cases are normally pretty good.
Just got mine. Very impressed. Great case. Fits tight. Highly recommended.

Love the concept and look. Got mine last week, power button doesnt line up, spen cant be pulled out inless you pull up on the case directly on top of the spen, ir blaster doesnt line up, barely holding the entire top lip. This thing is worth 2 bucks if that.
One good thing i wrote them an email and they said that i received a fluke and they sent me a new one today for free claiming it will fit better. We shall see and i hope so cause i really like it especially how nice and slim it is.

sounds like you got the same "flukey" case I got, but I didn't even bother contacting them I just chunked it in a draw and put the incipio case back on until I can find something thinner that'll actually fit to use. Maybe I'll give them a chance to redeem themselves with a replacement case.
I had a ringke case for my Note 4 and the first one was warped on one side. Clearly an issue they have. Replacement was excellent.
Quick update . Have had this case for a week now and I have no desire to order anything else except the flip wallet. Nice and tight and feels good in the hand. $13 is a good deal for this.

It's full-grain leather (the best you can get) from American cattle, sent to Europe to be tanned and back to Oregon Leather Company. Once dyed and finished, the leather is shipped to us, then we laser cut and handcraft to perfection. It's quite a process, and it took us quite some time to get the 6P all dialed in. The leather is ~1.5mm thick, so it'll take any drop and the phone won't wear through on the corners like the super thin Horween used by others. With that being said, we made the wrap all one piece; without the visor coverage, the surrounding leather would protrude and look pretty bad.
True story: Matias (owner) unknowingly dropped his leather wrapped iPhone outside his house when dropped off by a cab late one night. The next day, he managed to track it down at a neighbors' using the "Find my iPhone" feature. He determined that the cab had ran over the phone; there were even little pieces of gravel imbedded into the leather which managed to take all of the damage. Replaced the shattered screen and it was as good as new.

More pics and reviews are in the works. FYI - the leather is ~1.5mm thick. You could surely apply the front panels atop a screen protector, but I don't think you'll be able to cram it into a case. Honestly, I don't see why you'd want to case that smooth, buttery leather. It'll take any drop and the phone won't wear through on the corners like the super thin Horween used by others.

Just out of interest, what made you choose slickwraps over dbrand?
I've only ever dealt with dbrand so far so I'm not really aware of how the different companies compare and what they actually do different?
The toastmade stuff I've seen on the internet does look top notch.

Will be interesting to hear feedback on the quality and fit of the toastmade wrap.

I might bite. I would love a real carbon fiber version like the wood.
A carbon fiber pattern in the leather would do.

I would like to know if you used the Slickwraps leather or the Slickwraps "Natural Series" leather (one is real leather, the other is vinyl). I was considering the Slickwraps Natural Series because it looked fairly modest (doesn't cover the entire back), is less than $30 and looks fairly nice. However, if it is really thin and feels like plastic, I'll pass on it. Thanks!

Had one of these for my S7 and they are really nice cases. First time Caseology has made cases for Google phones. (Ignoring the rebranded Nexus 6 cases)
Couple days ago there was a navy blue version of Parallax series but now they are gone and only black version remains. Hopefully they will bring it back for order.

How are there cases by the way? They look kinda bulky.
They're a little thicker than your average 2 piece case. The thing is they are so well designed it honestly feels pretty close to as premium as a phone.
just received my case today. TL;DR I like it!
The back is textured so it makes it better handling the XL. I had a spigen rugged armor on prior and while I liked the look of that case, the back was a lil slippery. This case has almost a matte finish/feel to it which is a better IMHO. Case would be 10/10 if it had port covers for the usb c and headphone jack but thats just me

Can you post a picture from different angles? Especially the back, front and straight from the side so we can see how thick it makes the phone. I would like to buy this case
Are these cases durable? I've always been interested in them, but feared they focused on looks & feel over actual protection.
