Can anyone explain this? Last night my phone GAINED 20% battery while I slept. How is this possible? See the pic, phone was NOT plugged in......????

Closest thing i've had to that is, phone says 85%. boot into recovery or shutdown phone, restart and it says like 90%

Yea, note the significant spike at 70%, that was from plugging it in to charge. So you can see the uptick overnight was more gradual

I figured it out.
Or maybe there was some electromagnetic field given off by something that charged your battery? (which I HIGHLY doubt)

Battery meter =| battery charge
The meter reading is only an approximation and can get confused at times. This is why you can see the apparent charge drop 20% or more after a reboot. I can't say as I've ever seen it increase like that but I'm sure it's possible. Something was probably going on in the background that screwed it up.

I agree with iElvis. Its just a metering correction. The voltage didn't actually increase. Just the approximation of voltage to percent battery, which is just a relative number anyway, not a real "measurement".

My first charge also took a long time. Probably close to 4 hours. Hopefully, this doesnt persist.

If anyone here had an Atrix at one point can you say this battery lasts about the same as the Atrix?? I loved the battery on the Atrix, but the phone not so much.

it lasts just as long, if not longer. I don't still have an Atrix to direct compare so this is kind of off feel/memory.
Chika Da China Da Chinese Chicken?
Every phone thread I have looked through states the same thing about all phones like ours.
New phones, wiped batt stats or newly flashed custom roms.
It takes a few cycles for the phone to create near perfect battery stats. It's not so much that it isn't actually charged in an hour or two. We are all looking at "statistics" produced by the software.
We all know how inaccurate software can be at times right Bill G?
Ok but how do u explain battery loss when the device is plugged in and in use...

Check the output of the charger.
So many variables. Wall direct plug charger charges quicker than a USB plug. USB plug charges better than a car charger. Check the 'ma' output and see if its like 500 or so. If so then you are basically charging at an equal or slower rate than the use of the same power.

I too would love something like this - Something that would stop charging at 99% so that stupid damn popup box (Please unplug your phone to save energy) doesn't pop over my clock and stay on screen ALL NIGHT.
Unfortunately, i'm pretty sure that the charging is a hardware thing - so i don't think there's anything out there that can stop it short of unplugging.

if your trying to make your battery last a long time just plug it in before you hit 20% charging to 100% is not going to be a big deal. today's li-ion can take alot of abuse just dont drain them dead and expect them to live very long
Yeah I wouldn't worry about charging to 100%. I have over a dozen lithium batteries for my flashlights, and I keep them all near 100% most of the time.
Charging Li-ion battery above 4.2v is bad.
This app you asked about is very important. Charging a battery more than 4.2 volts dramatically shortens its recharge cycle numbers. I measured my battery volts, found that 4.2 volts is achieved around 85%.
An app that would prevent charging over 80% will be great.
Thanks.
Any news, any app which stops charging at 80% ?

You all make foolish observation based on you personal use of some batteries, of course this is not a reliable info.
You learn in basics of electronics that there is a quantity of energy that it is supposed to be put in a battery for storage, extending it's battery life, and also. Cientific studies show that maintaining your battery near this spot is healthier, so the app wold be pretty useful.
And no, comments like "I've had plenty of batteries, I make bad use of them and after a year they're just fine" doesn't disqualify cientific research.
This apps works awesome! Until this week, when the latest March security update came out, and broke it for Nexus's...Nexus'...Nexi...? lol. But it might work perfect for you if you are not on a Nexus, or if you are, and you're not on the new march update, you're probably fine!

Oops, I spoke incorrectly. It was NOT the march update that caused it to stop working. It works fine, it was another app causing the conflict. I should have corrected this post sooner.

How long without battery discharge advised?

I have a Xoom in my bedroom to use as 'smarttv' via the hdmi. Do I need to discharge the battery sometimes or can I just leave it plugged in indeterminate?
I would discharge it at least once a week.
But, that's just me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using XDA Premium HD app
That's a good idea, like 1~2 times a week
"This Story Ends Where It Began"
Lol I believe once a month is better....
Tnx guys. I'll go with once a month. Seems reasonable.
Fully discharge it once a month. This may seem contradictory, but hear us out. While lithium-ion batteries shouldn't be discharged regularly, most modern batteries are what's known as "smart batteries", which means that they can tell you how long you have until your battery dies (e.g. "2 hours, 15 minutes remaining"). This feature can get miscalibrated after a lot of shallow discharges. So, manufacturers recommend fully discharging your battery once a month to make sure this stays accurate.

Well there you go, lol. As people say, Li-ion batteries don't need to be discharged, just calibrated once a month...

Ontrion LifeCHARGE Battery Case

I just saw this last night. Has anyone tried this case out yet? It looks intriguing. After adding the case, you're looking at about 4800 while keeping the slim design of the phone. Definitely an interesting concept.

Yes.
The battery is being charged 24 hours a day. These cases kill the battery very fast by putting them under that kind of duress.

thats why you just turn off charging on the battery case. duh. But having a battery you can swap out anytime sorta kills this idea. So................... but for some reason i like the idea. weird.

This. You wouldn't switch on the charging when it's close to 95%. I turn it on when it's at 5% or less.
My Charging Case.
I don't have the exact same model but I do have a charging case and I love it. My battery would deplete quickly since I play music while working and emulators when I'm not. It can easily go 2 full days and a bit without touching a wall charger and almost 4 days if I don't play games or music. Your mileage may vary depending on what ROM you have running.

That's why you don't leave the charging on...the idea of a charging case is to be able to have a backup when your phone is low on battery. Obviously for a phone like the S4, it's not as sensible because you can just buy an extra battery and swap it. But it's still a cool concept.
