[GUIDE] Easier Method for running Ubuntu on Kindle Fire (1st Gen) - Kindle Fire Themes and Apps

***Easy method to run Ubuntu on the Kindle Fire (1st Gen)***
Hello folks, I have put together a simple guide to run Ubuntu 12.04 on the Kindle Fire. I decided to do this because if I would have known about a simple guide to run Ubuntu it would have made my life easier a few months ago. This method does not take very much knowledge and experience, just follow a few simple steps.
There are two simple requirements to get started initially:
1.) The application called "Complete Linux Installer" found on the Play Store free of charge
2.) 2.5GB of free space on your SD card partition
After you meet those simple requirements it's time to fire up the Complete Linux Installer app. Within the app itself it has steps to follow but if you're like me it might for some reason become complicated.
Ok, here we go:
Step 1.) Open app and select "Install Guides"....then proceed to "Ubuntu 12 Install Guide". You will see a message about compatability issue with ROMs and kernals (I am currently using a CM7 ROM with IR's kernal and it works fine) and also a message stating that ADB must be enabled for use. It also reminds you to have at least 2.5GB free on SD. Continue on to the next screen
Step 2.) Now you are at the point of downloading the Ubuntu image itself and two apps needed to finish out the process. When you select "Download Ubuntu Image" it will give you the option of downloading either the large, small or core. I've only tried this method using the small image, (roughly 400MB to be downloaded). It will direct you to the website Source Forge so you might want to use a browser that will actually download the large .zip file. Now download the Android Terminal Emulator and the Android VNC Viewer app from the Google Play Store. You're now ready for step 3!
Step 3.) It's time to decompress that large .zip file which can be very tedious in a way. The .zip should contain two files: the Ubuntu.img and Ubuntu.img.md5 file. Place these into a folder on the root of your SD card, I usually use a folder called Ubuntu, go figure. The Complete Linux Installer app will also explain this in the step on the app after the download screen.
Step 4.) Time to run Ubuntu! You can either use the Complete Linux Installer widget called "One Click Boot Ubuntu" or from the main selection screen of the app by hitting the "Launch" button. If you launch Ubuntu from the widget it will initially ask for the path of the image itself....ex: on my Kindle the path would read /mnt/sdcard/Ubuntu/Ubuntu.img
When you launch the image, the Terminal Emulator will automatically load up and it will say "Validating Image Checksum" for a few seconds. This is also explained in the Linux Installer app. If you get the message about the file being corrupt than either something in the decompression process or downloading went wrong. Re-download the image.
After the Terminal verifies the image it will ask "Start VNC server?", of course hit "y".......the SSH server is optional and then it should ask for your desired resolution....the Kindle Fire has a 1024x600 Res but you can put any you want. Remember whenever you want to terminate the session, just type "exit" in the Terminal Emulator.
Step 5.) Setting up the VNC Viewer is the last step! Go into Android VNC Viewer and set the parameters. Start with New connection, give it a nickname, password must be "ubuntu", your local IP address, port 5900, set color to 24 and now you're finally ready to hit "Connect" and load up the Ubuntu environment!
Using this method to access Ubuntu is very deterimental on battery life. This is my first descriptive guide on XDA so please give feedback and maybe some tips and pointers.

Thant You! That's vey nice ;D Do you kow much time can Ubuntu run on kindle withouth charger?

Thanks for this, I'll give it a try.

It's hard to say....when I would run the Ubuntu image, the battery graph would take a nose dive at almost a 90 degree angle downward lol

Cannot open ddms.bat in order to take screenshots on Nexus One

I wanted to take screenshots of my Nexus One (2.2 FRF91/T-Mobile/Stock) but I'm just a newbie so I followed the guide on andriodcentral Anrdroid 101 tips. (Sorry I can't link to it since I'm a new user on these forums
That guide led me to another guide on how to install the sdk
When I tried to pull my 3rd party apps, cmd didnt do anything it simply said "0 pulled, 0 skipped", however I was able to pull my standard apps. I'm confident the sdk was installed correctly though.
I'm using a laptop with Windows 7 64bit and an AMD processor, I'm not sure if that information is helpful or not
I've already downloaded and installed the android 2.2 sdk, java runtime environment, java development kit. I've also properly installed the ADB drivers for the Nexus One. I also downloaded Eclispe but when I tried to run it, the application won't open. I have a feeling its because I didn't install it properly.
My problem now is that the ddms.bat (Dalvik Debug Monitor) won't open when I double click on it. I tried to right click and run as administrator but that didn't work either. In both cases when I try to open it, a cmd windows opens for a fraction of a second and then closes before I can read it. So I googled it and found a website that seemed to be able to solve the problem but its geared towards linux users.
I specifically followed these directions "To fix this a replace of the bundled swt is needed. The file is located under android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3/tools/lib/. Rename swt.jar to swt_32b.jar. Next download swt for your platform. I have used swt-3.4.2-gtk-linux-x86_64.zip. Unpack the file swt.jar in the zipfile to android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3/tools/lib/ and finally start ddms" but that didnt work either. So now my android-sdk-windows/tools/lib/x86_64 is full of other files rather than just having that swt.jar file.
Can anyone please help on getting ddms.bat to open or on how to get eclipse to open?, I'm so close to being able to take screenshots.
Some notes:
1.I'm not interested in rooting (too worried about bricking my phone), so please don't recommend that I root first.
2. USB debugging was ON when I tried it
Open up a command prompt. (Start -> search "cmd")
use CD to get to the folder where you keep ddms.bat
open ddms.bat from the command prompt by simply entering "ddms.bat" then press Enter. That will keep it from closing the window.
Just to see if it gives any errors.
Thank you so much!
However the error message that cmd is now giving me is : WARNING: Java not found in your path.
Could you please tell me how I can do this? for the time being I'm searching the internet for help but the first thing I found seems super complicated
I finally got it to work, wish I could link the imgur pic, but I'm still a new user but here's the end of the imgur link code :ucBpY

How to install adb windows 7 32 and 64 and should work on XP

From what I read a few people have had problems installing ADB on windows 7 so I figured this might help some so here we go
1st Down load the android sdk found here= http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
2nd download the java jdk found here= http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
3rd download Mobile Stream Easy tether. You can find it on the android market. You can use the free version or the pro. Either version will do.
Now install the java jdk and let it run that's all for the java.
Second extract the android sdk to your c:\ drive.
Meaning right click on the android sdk and choose extract.
A window will appear. In the address bar of that window is were the files will currently be extracted to. Please delete everything in the address bar except the c:\ Then click ok and close the window.
Then go to your start menu and click on it. From there go to computer and click on it. Then you will see an icon that says (c That's your hard drive were you extracted the android sdk. Click/Double click on this icon. From there you should see a folder named Android-sdk something something, Right click on this folder and rename it to AndroidSDK
Please rename the folder exactly as I wrote it capitol letters and all.
Next make sure that you have usb debuggin enabled on your phone. If you can't find this, "PLEASE STOP UNTIL YOU DO"
Now open up the mobile stream easy tether application on you phone. This is needed because it gives you an option to download the .exe file for your os/ windows. - So download the .exe and when its done go to your sd card and find the .exe It should be in your downloads folder on your sd card. Once you have the file transfer it to your Laptop/Pc.
Now run the .exe file and when it opens up it will give you an option of Easy tether core or Android USB drivers. Please choose the Android USB drivers. But "STOP" and click the little arrow next to ANDROID USB DRIVERS. A menu will appear. When it does please choose ENTIRE FEATURE WILL BE INSTALLED ON C:\ DRIVE. Check that option as well. Click install and let it finish.
Now please REBOOT your Laptop/Desktop.
When your pc/laptop is up and running, plug your phone into your pc the drivers should begin to install let it finish.
If your using Windows vista 32bit/64bit or Windows 7- 32bit/64bit go to your start menu and click on it. In the search box at the bottom of the start menu type in cmd. After that press the enter key on your keyboard. If your using Windows Xp then go to your start menu and click on "run" This will bring up a little box on the left side of your desktop. In that menu box type cmd and hit enter on your keyboard. This will bring up a command window as well.
When that command window appears. Type this command.
cd\
then hit enter
Now type cd\AndroidSDK\tools\
then hit enter
Now type adb devices. You should see a bunch of numbers.
Those numbers. Represent your phone.
Now type
adb shell
Then hit enter on your keyboard.
You should see the # sign. That means you have adb installed. To test it just type reboot recovery and it should reboot your phone into your current recovery. From there you got it.
I hope this helps anyone who was having a hard time installing adb with the htc drivers.
Edit if you need help installing adb on ubuntu see my thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794624
thanks really needed this a while back
Great guide, but this is all I do if I need basic adb to access my phone to get shell access or push/pull apk files, etc. It takes maybe 5mins tops depending on my download speed.
If all you need is adb to access your phone for shell access, or to push or pull files (like .apk) then do the following:
Download HTC Sync software from HTC's website. Install this software. It includes the needed USB drivers. This works on 64 bit machines as well. I know because it is what I use.
Download the Android SDK for Windows.
Use your favorite tool to extract the Windows Android SDK to the location of your choice. I use 7-zip, but Windows supports extraction of .zip files by default. Right click the file and choose Extract All. For the sake of this guide we will use C:\. Put that in the box when it asks where to extract to.
Once extracted you should have C:\android-sdk-windows folder on your computer, assuming you extracted to C:\ like this guide uses.
Now click your start menu, choose All Programs, click on Accessories, and choose Command Prompt. Power users will know you can also press the 'Windows Key' + R and type CMD and hit enter. Same result either way.
Now type into the black box (command prompt) the following (without the "quotes"): "cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools\" and press enter. CD stands for change directory. We are navigating your hard drive using the command prompt.
Now you can use adb commands. Simply type adb and hit enter to see a full list of commands. The most common command is "adb shell" (no quotes again) to get to your phones shell.
Remember, your phone needs to be in USB debugging mode (on your phone from the desktop: Menu Key, Settings, Applications, Development, check the USB Debugging box, and accept the notice when prompted) and you need the HTC USB Drivers installed.
I say this is simple, but I'm also not new to computers or the command line so it might not be clear to everyone. If you need clarification please ask.
Note: I've edited my post many times to make it not sound like an attack on OP. There are many ways to do the same thing. Do whatever works best for you.
Actually to correct you --- you have to download the development platforms via adb tools .exe to do development also you will need the eclipse software as well this is for just adb the Java helps in some cases you will see wen using adb Java is helpful also if people want to use the theme injector the Java is there all they would have to do is add it to there path also from what I read quiet a few people were having problems with the HTC sync drivers so this is a way to do it if you can't get the HTC drivers to work and this can't be over complex this takes like 15 min and your done how complex is that????? And to clarify your statement on -- this is the Heroc forum lol really is not the hero android??? That's y I said use the easy tether its gives you the option to install the ABD Android USB drivers but thanks also y not post ur way of installing adb its all usefull knowledge

Well the topic said "how to install adb" so I was confused as to why it was so in-depth. It didn't say anything about development, Eclipse IDE, etc.
My post was my way of doing it.
Dude you didn't even post ur commands you put what ever what ever a man you can post on this thread it's not like I own it but at least b clear for beginners on what commands you use and make your instructions clear and if this is in-depth I don't get it this is as plain and simple as it gets

You got it. I've edited my first post and hope it clears things up and to make it not sound like I was saying you were wrong or something.
Now what would really help newer users would be a video or some pictures. Might be something to look into later.
And to make it clear anyone who wants to post any kind of way to install adb on any os please do like porkrinds said there are many so all ways are welcomed and if any one needs help installing adb on Ubuntu check my other thread on how to install ABD on Ubuntu

In addition to the OP, if you'd like the ability to run adb commands from any directory via command line, simply copy adb.exe and adbwinapi.dll to your computer's ?:\Windows\System32 directory, where obviously "?" is your Windows installation's drive letter; usually "C".

I rather just add it to my PATH variable.
Example: http://geekswithblogs.net/renso/archive/2009/10/21/how-to-set-the-windows-path-in-windows-7.aspx
I'd add (on my computer) E:\android-sdk\platform-tools to my PATH variable. No moving files needed.
Trying to keep it simple for new users lol. But many thanks for the post.

Android Screencast (My Mobiler for Android) and Android Screen Monitor

Hey guys, i just wanted to share these applications that i found awhile back. I have them posted in the old vogue forums but they still come in very handy to me.
I DID NOT DEVELOPE ANY OF THIS SOFTWARE. CREDIT GOES TO THE DEVELOPERS
Some of you may already have these.
If you have Android SDK, ADB and JAVA, all you need to do is download the attached files, extract, and run them.
Link To Android SDK
Link To Java
Android Screen Monitor
This is a really nice and easy to use screen monitoring\screenshot program.
ASM is an Android Debug Bridge (adb) client, When it starts monitoring screen,
ASM connects to adb on port 5037 and receives frame buffer continuously on the device or emulator and transfer image to your desktop window.
You can rotate and scaling monitor window and export a image into PNG file as screen shot tool.
ADB Must be installed
If you have sdk installed skip step 1.
If you have Java JRE(JDK) installed skip step 2
Make sure you have your phone plugged in usb.
1. Make sure ADB is functional
2. Download Android SDK for Windows and place the android-sdk-windows folder on the root of your C:\ Drive.
3. Download and install Latest version of Java
4. Download the attached asm.zip and extract asm.jar out.
5. Place the asm.jar in \android-sdk-windows\tools folder.
6. Right click on asm.jar and place a shortcut on your desktop. Run the jar file or shortcut to bring up the monitor
right click on monitor screen to:
get screenshots
change to landscape\portrait
zoom in or out
_____________________________________________________________
ANDROID SCREENCAST(My Mobiler for Android)
Features
- Mouse and keyboard control FOR ROOTED DEVICES ONLY
- Landscape mode (right click)
- Video recording
- Basic file browser
INSTRUCTIONS
SDK, ADB, and Java are required
Download the attached java file, unzip it, and just run it.
If you have trouble, put it in your sdk\Tools folder and make a shortcut to your desktop.

Yes, I just tried out the Android Screencast. It seemed to work well. I am not sure what I would use it for, but it did work.
I didn't try ASM because I use DDMS for screenshots. DDMS is built into the Android SDK and works perfectly without needing anything extra.
Thanks for the contributions though.
greek keyboard
although it is rather slow, it works Ok.
I can use the english keyboard for composing messages, working with contacts, but when I turn the PC-keyboard to the greek language, I cannot use it with the phone.
Any suggestion pls?

Hello
I tried the 2 apps : they work fine but the screen display is inverted !
Any idea?
Thanks
my device : ZTE Blade + FLB Froyo 2.2 ROM
(update: same result with webkey)
the same problem with zte blade and CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC4

Ubuntu on Xoom. I have many questions.

I successfully followed the instructions in the dev section on installing Ubuntu and have it running through Wise VNC. I'm stuck when I run Ubuntu and can't exit the program because the toolbar at the top is gone. I also want to know if I can install OpenOffice so I can use that to type my papers and stuff through VNC. I also notice that I'm missing my internet browser. Do I have to update packages? Thanks.

Windows 10 on Surface RT working (edited thread)

Read carefully, this is about the installation of Windows 10 ARM32 on the Surface RT1. Previously tried the Elektrohax tutorial (video on youtube and also posted at Alexenferman.com) but I was unlucky on my attempts.
This is the mentioned tutorial:
How to install Windows 10 on the Surface RT - Alexenferman
www.alexenferman.com
I followed the instructions but failed twice. Now I know what was wrong. The tutorial IS FINE, it works. The thing is you have to first apply a patched version of Windows RT8.1 and run some scripts, that was fine, now the specifics:
Don't "RUN" the scripts, do not double click, this was the issue on my side. It doesn't matter if you run the script as "Administrator", I repeat, in my case this was the problem, DO NOT RUN or just double click.
INSTEAD, open a CMD window elevated to Administrator privileges. Move to the location of the scripts, this means get into the specific folder, only then run the script.
This means, if you placed the script on a folder named "whatever", right clicking with administrator rights and then execute does-NOT have the same effect as getting inside the folder as in "CD\whatever" and then "name-of-the-script".
I tried several times and I can confirm this is the thing that failed on my attempts.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Being that said, that website has all the instructions and links. Follow the tutorial carefully step by step. Keep the files on a safe place, who knows how long those will be kept on the web.
After my failed attempts I tried the chinese tutorial posted on Youtube by cong cheng on his channel. It worked, it even has some scripts working as installer, yes it works BUT after taking a deep look it's a method that applies a set of files made for some Nokia device, while it works, it is in chinese, has some broken things and it is SLOWER than Alexen Ferman method.
In short:
- Chinese - applies an already customized W10 version, way slower
- Alexen - it is an installer, you end up with a much better version
Good luck.
So what did you follow? The forums here seem to contain loads of broken links. Love to try W10 on my Surface since it's only collecting dust in my closet.
Thread edited and updated above and below.
Regarding Windows 10 on the Surface RT (CHINESE TUTORIAL)
I have no idea what's the risk on using a chinese modified pack. This one is different to the one at Alexen Ferman website, here I didn't need to apply all those patches (extras, after finishing the install), instead it worked out of the box. It's the same release as far as I know, but it's been customized.
My experience, what works:
o Edge works, better than IE11
o MyTube works (Youtube works amazingly well on this APP)
o System not as fast as W8.1
o I just clicked "Activate Windows" the usual way and it worked
o Cameras work out of the box (front and rear), no patches needed
o Can run ported apps (Paint.net, Halite, etc).
o YES, you gain access to some other apps on the STORE but hey, read below
X Office was in chinese (preinstalled) and slower, couldn't change it
X Removed it and installed the Office package provided by Alex Ferman
¬ After reinstalling, Office now is FASTER (tested and confirmed)
X No alternative browsers (just some but it's just IE with skin)
X Was kind of tricky to remove chinese (there are still some traces)
X Store doesn't fully work, just allows installing whatever is in my library (owned)
X VLC is way slower and ugly, worked way better on W8.1RT
- XX The Brightness control is kinda broken. You have to disable automatic changes and use only manual (via button), only there you can apply diff real levels of brightness to the screen, BUT, it won't work forever, after a while it will get stuck and you would have to reboot and set it right after going to the desktop.
- XX I'm still exploring this, I don't fully like it to be honest. The touch keyboard works, yes but in my case at times stops making sounds, and also stops working. Unplug and plug again fixes this but... meh.
It wasn't that great, I was actually considering going back to Windows 8.1 RT.
Now the final install I have (Alexen method):
Everything works, you just have to follow the tutorial and you will actually install W10, it's not an out of the box ready image, it is an installer. The only broken thing so far is the brightness control as explained above (it's an issue with the release so it won't go away), and the store didn't work for me, but there is an alternate method to install apps described at Alexen website.
Other than that EVERYTHING is better, it's fast, decent. I'm keeping my RT1 with Windows 10.
Read carefully, follow each step and don't give up. That's all I can say.
I did manage to get this working on my Surface 2 myself, was an interesting experience I don't really have any need for this thing anymore, but I have been pissed about buying a locked out piece of equipment for 8 years, so more just to principal of the thing! Thanks to Alex for all the work.
How do you install office from alexenferman? I tried running setup, but it says this app cant run on your pc. Also have you found a program to un pack .7z packages?

Great that you got it working, now that you mention that you don't have any need for the Surface anymore, consider selling it to one of the member of the team working on modifications, unless you change your mind now that your surface works differently. I simply downloaded the package and ran the Office Installer on the Surface (now with Windows 10ARM), your comment makes me think perhaps, you don't actually have a Surface with Tegra processor, please check. .7z? search for 7zip, that's the program to extract the files from the compressed package .7z

Nope, impossible. They didn't create a binary (executable app) for the platform and the way it's built (the source code) seems unlikely for someone else to do it.

You should repart the drive using the official image downloaded from microsoft's site. If you want to come back to completely stock you have to re-install windows using the standard procedure, not the installation through wim file
im having an issue at the installing the wim using the dism. says system cant find the path specified. i verified the drive labels and all any ideas?
can some help me, after successful installed and load windows 10 on surface RT... when i want to run CMD as administrator. it gave an error "The Parameter is invalid".
Looking for some help, I got to the Win10 install stage and keep getting 0xc000000f blue screen error on Win10 boot. From the guide, it says I didn't choose to not copy system files when creating my recovery drive, but I didn't have any other options. I unchecked the only box available. Not sure what is wrong or how to fix. I can't reset, it asks me for my recovery drive, it doesn't accept the drive I created.
Edit: I ended up creating a new recovery drive from my Win10 PC, unchecked the box to copy system files, downloaded the Win RT recovery zip file from MS, copied the contents of that folder into the new recovery drive, copied the Win10 .wim from Alexen to the flash drive, and retried step 4 (I had already installed the hacked RT image and disabled secureboot, etc.). It is now booting, at least getting farther than it did before, after flashing the Win10 image.
Running into an issue right after the installing the patched image I get to the Region and Language select after the reboot and cannot select anything. After a bit the display just goes black. What can I do?
