I successfully followed the instructions in the dev section on installing Ubuntu and have it running through Wise VNC. I'm stuck when I run Ubuntu and can't exit the program because the toolbar at the top is gone. I also want to know if I can install OpenOffice so I can use that to type my papers and stuff through VNC. I also notice that I'm missing my internet browser. Do I have to update packages? Thanks.

I have tried everything to get a one click solution to enable non-market apps. First and foremost I am on a MAC. No access to a windows machine. I have my phone rooted and have installed superuser status.
I am looking for a solution that will let me install (easily) non- market applications. There appears to be several solutions doing this on a windows machine. I have not been able to find a solution on a MAC. And instructions, help, videos anything is greatly appreciated.

What firmware are you on? Because if you are on the leaked 2.2 you should look on the leaked ji6 hacks forum page and it will give you the instructions that you can run in adb shell in the terminal application on a mac you just have to type ./adb (command) where windows users just have to type adb (command) you should make sure that you are comfortable on adb though because there are hardly any tutorials for adb on a mac around. I found that the hard way. Hope this helps, if you still can't figure it out post more info and I will do my best to help although I am still kinda a noob to android development.

Have you tried ADB? If you can get ADB to work, you should have the skill to copy over the settings.db and use the SQLeditor for Firefox plugin. Or use SQLite on the phone.
Read up on how to enable sideloading - the same commands that work on windows work on a mac - or very similar. As long as you know how to copy files in terminal you should be set.

I am a proud new owner of a Xoom, and would love to unlock and root it! I have had a Droid X for a while now, and while it is rooted, rommed and the rest, I have not dealt with a bootloader before. All I had to do was use Z4root and go from there, simple. I used a friend's PC at school to learn how to SBF if needed, and that's as far as I've gotten with Android.
I could really use help with unlocking the Xoom. I am running Parallels on my Mac (Windows XP Home) and am unsure how to go about installing Android SDK. Motorola Drivers I think I am all set, I've run the program and it says I'm up to date. With Android SDK, however, I downloaded the zip and it says there are no files to extract. I run the installer program for Android SDK, and it says I need Java JDK. I download Java JDK, and yet Android SDK installer program still says I don't have it.
I would really appreciate where to go from here, and I apologize if this has been covered somewhere else, but I did look around for quite a while and I don't want to do anything prematurely and mess up a $600 device. Again, apologies for my nOObness.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I did exactly what you are talking about doing. Boot into your virtual machine and install all the sdk, moto drivers, and fastboot.
When connecting your xoom, enable USB debugging and make sure the usb device (when plugged in) is attached to your parallels machine only, it should give you an option when booting it up.
Everything works as normal, Parallels really has no drawbacks, just follow the root instructions as if you were doing it on a native machine.
I actually ended up just doing everything on my Mac natively, but thanks for the info! I think I was more confused on actually installing the SDK properly than anything else.

I have a B70 ASUS Transformer TF101, with SBKv2. I rooted it with RazorClaw and RecoveryInstall, and now I have Prime 2.1.1.
I want Ubuntu in my tablet but SBKv2 prevents me to install native Ubuntu. So, I installed the chroot Ubuntu from Jhinta post:

But the problem is updating the disto. It get stuck removing libappindicator0.1-cil from mono, with a high CPU usage. The same problem as user gnagnone in this reply to the OP. Jintha replies indicating to run the chroot on desktop chroot:

I change Gnome by LXDE. Now, the apps starts but if I run Open Office Writer, Firefox, Keyboard and LXTerminal, I'm unable to run other applications. They doesn't start. Maybe is the 32MB restriction.

hey guys im trying to use virtualBox on my Ubuntu machine. Im trying to run windows 7. Got it all set up and loaded with no problems. Heres where I cant get passed.
Im trying to get VB to utilize the entire screen space. Ive read through all the articles about installing the additions iso. I cant seem to find a good copy. Also I cant get Odin to recognize my phone either. I have USB set up in VB and can access the files on phone but cant get Odin to recognize it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You can install guest additions from within VirtualBox. It shows up as a mounted CD drive. Open it, & run the appropriate script.
If your ultimate goal is to use Odin, though, I don't think it will work through VirtualBox. Maybe it's possible, but I think it needs direct access to the USB. You could just dual-boot Windows & do it directly.

thanx for the info dude. I guess i just assumed i could get it to work in a virtual machine. Could have swore Ive seen Adam doing it...mind u he is MUCH MUCH more educated than me. That is my goal. I have a linux machine and wanna use odin to flash Adams Odin root file for the Note 2. No problem running his CASUAL program, but need to root it first and as far as I can tell it needs to be done in Windows. I guess I can always turn a spare computer back into a windows machine...just didnt wanna have to go through the headache,.
Well, you can boot off a Ubuntu install disk (or make a GParted Live USB), then use gparted to resize your Ubuntu. Set a few GB aside for a new partition, then install Windows there, instead of installing Windows in the VM. It ends up being the same thing, just a few more steps to get it running.
Just make sure you back up your grub config and mbr. I don't think Windows would make your Ubuntu install vanish, but ya never know...

Oh, yeah. The default command to switch to fullscreen mode is Host+F, where the default Host key is Right Ctrl (so, RightCtrl+F).

I installed lilstevies OLife Premium Dualboot on my TF101, everything went well. At the Login screen I can only log on with the "Guest Session" option though, since I never created an user during the installation.
Since I cant do sudo operations with the guest user ("sudo: unable to change sudoers gid: Operation not permitted") I cannot use Ubuntu, since i don't have the root password (because Ubuntu has none?). I already tried a lot of "standard" username/password combinations. What am I doing wrong?

Someone with a bit more experience with ubuntu might be able to help more but without root permissions/ access to the recovery console, i dont think your able to create an admin user(might be an exploit or something but i would doubt it). might have to bite the bullet and reinstall(as a last resort)
I'm 99% sure there's no single user mode but there are dirty ways of doing it though... You can try to mount the ubuntu partition in android (mmcblk0p8 if I remember correctly), and manually edit the passwd/shadow (make sure to back up first). I'm not that familiar with ubuntu's way of handling users through sudo but you should be able to chroot to your ubuntu partition then adduser/usermod/whatever or just modify sudoers directly from android to allow guests, boot into it, login, add a normal user etc.. then remove guest from sudoers.
I'm sure there's other ways to do it, just nothing "clean" per say like a single user mode or a rescue mode.
