[Q] I want to save $ monthly - General Questions and Answers

Hi. I don't know if this is the right place on this forum for my question or not, but here it goes...
I want to try to save some money MONTHLY and get better/quicker service that I have now with T-Mobile.
My one phone is UNLOCKED already (Samsung Galaxy S3 is me, and HTC Shadow is mom), but I AM LOOKING FOR A MOST SIMPLE REGULAR GSM BAR PHONE (Only NEW and UNLOCKED) for my mom. She doesn't use the phone other than to call (a mom, what can I say...lol).
I'm not happy at all with my monthly cost for the quality of the service I get. I have service 1/4 of the times. I want to switch..
I'm not under any contracts or anything. I'm free as a bird. LoL.
What can you guys suggest for me?? Thanx

wanna save money join Solavei $49 a month, first month free, 4G, unlimited talk text and data. If you join now. If you get people to join you can get the service for free. check it out.

But, I never heard of this provider... How fast and reliable is the connection?? Thanx

They have been out for over an year, I use them and don't have any issues, there towers are through T-moblie. But you can end up getting paid to do this!

[Q] What is the drving factor of why you change servicec providers?

Hello All,
I am one of the people that do more reading on xda than post, so sorry for my low post count. This question is to get more feedback and also allow to me vent a bit.
Like mostly everyone that is on XDA loves their phone or tablet and wants to get the most out of it and/or make it their own. Many of us are gadget lovers and really enjoy the evolution of technology as it comes out. I am sure many of us would love to or have been to CES in Las Vegas (or any electronics show). All and all, when the day is over we are all sophisticated geeks (to others or in our own mind).
Myself, I am in a daily battle to stay on-top of technology as much as I can. What is the problem with that? Money. (can I get a Amen?). We will not even go into the social life talk in this post, because after all it is just a question. I find myself always seeing what service provider will release next. I have once worked for Sprint in the corporate side and know a lot that goes on behind the curtain. Providers are shown many new and current handsets that have and have not launched in the market yet. There is a team that looks at all angles of the phone before giving a thumbs up to it. It all comes down to what the customer will buy.
SO... allow me to get to the point and question....
- Do you find yourself migrating from service provider to service provider based on what type of handset(s) they have new and existing?
- Do you sit there and joggle the pros and cons of dealing with a service provider you know you are not going to want to be with and/or deal with, but they have a handset you want (so badly)?
- Do you try to find ways out of your contract so you can switch providers just to get into that phone?
- Do you put yourself on a pay as you go plan, and just buy the phone out-right just so you are not held down to a contract?
- Are you on the look out for new mobile providers to see what they offer as for phones Vs rate plans? (Example: ting.com in the USA)
Being honest, other than Cicket, and TrackPhone in the USA... I have been on EVERY service provider (in the USA). If I could get frequent flyer miles for my mobile number, I would be PRIME GOLD ELITE by now.
Alright, your turn... what SAY YOU?
I take it for most this is too much or two hard to answer?
Hello there! I always have been on pay as you go, the reason in $, I would get a contract but don't want to be tied down for 2 years, virgin mobile dosent have many Android phones so I just wait till they come out with new ones, I'm patient , service providers to me isn't that great of a deal, as long as service is good and the price is right, service is an opinion, some people think tmobile is better and some think at&t is better, ive been on boost mobile, virgin mobile, at&t and sprint, service seemed the same to me, so I don't research and debate to see what's best, to me I think contract phone bills can be a little to over priced, but this is only my opinion

Thank you for the reply I agree with you. Looking at T-Mobile for example, their non-contract plans are lower cost then their normal plans. I was lost as to why this is and did not want to go into it with why this is.
ya im not sure why that is, perhaps maybe services use "pre-paid" as a marketing strategy to get new customers to try there service out and experiment how they like and feel about the company, if a customer has been on there prepaid for a while and likes them they might say hey, i like this service provider...maybe i should get a contract with them. Now that customer is with them for 2 years (or what ever the contract is). As price for pre paid and why its sometimes cheaper im not sure, im still trying to figure that out
I have gone back and forth between post paid and prepaid. As for me, the cost on prepaid is much better. However, the customer service is horrible in prepaid. I am with ATT, and recently had switched from postpaid to prepaid, then had an issue with the phone i bought on postpaid and had to pay the etf to get out of contract. Needless to say, I couldn't get any where with customer service, and had to switch back to postpaid to resolve my issue, and then back to postpaid. Why. Because i had so much into the phone. Anyway, customer service is a big difference, even between different service providers.

I agree, I have noticed that if you move into Pre-Paid service you fall into the ol' "You get what you pay for" type of deal. I have head through out the roomer mill that some companies may go 100% full automated for all pre-paid accounts. Thus, if the automation service can not fix your problem, then there is no one live that can help you. I can just think how awful that would be if you are trying to port your number over and you run in to issues.
Have any of you guys/gals noticed this? I have seen this time and time again. The quality of phone used in pre-paid Vs. that of Post-Paid. I think the core reason is that people just have issues paying 300.00 or more for a phone. They seem to love only paying 200.00 or less for a smartphone.
Even the same make and model between Pre and post... it just feels cheaper on a Pre-paid device.
Any takers on this?
I wouldn't say it feels cheaper on a prepaid device, maybe its some people mind that they feel there phone is cheap or themselves are cheap because they are on pay as you go, there is nothing wrong with prepaid...just don't have much of a phone selection, in this economy I'm sure alot of people are switching to prepaid due to they pay to much and fear if they can't pay the bills and ruin there credit

I just switched to straight talk today. $45 per month. With Att I paid $75 a months, with 500 MB. That was prepaid. So I like saving $30.
im with ATT now, i left sprint because of the prices, they've gotten higher since getting 4g (charging $10 a month per line) and with 5 lines that was to much for me, i went to tmobile next but ever single month they over charged me and then in a 3 month span charged me 4 times, so i left them and now im with ATT no problems so far. i think all carriers have great phones and everyone will find one they like from anywhere its mainly a budget issue with me

Smh T-Mobile

So T-Mobile US pulled the E-Brake on wireless tethering and now if you want share the data you already pay 30.00/mo addl for (well me atleast), you now have now pay an addl 14.99/mo. I mean yes I keep up with the carrier market and I know they have had terrible numbers the past 2-3 years, but if ur tryng to pull your company out the mud you don't do it by making sadfaces on all you long time loyal customers. I mean can a brotha get a grandfathered account? Lol (hypothetical).
Anyway, I always thought since I was rooted I wouldn't run into this wireless tethering issue but I guess I was wrong. Anybody know or might know or even have an idea of a way around this? Many thanks in advance

That would be FANTASTIC. Getting out of a contract = new phones, or even cheaper plan rates.

The article I read said that when Sensation users are upgrading to ICS they will lose their free tethering. Apparently TMo couldn't clamp down in gingerbread so they just gave it away.
I read that as when I upgrade to a new phone I will lose it as well.

Damn, getting out of that contract would save me 30 bucks a month if I switched to a prepaid plan

I'm more than sure there will be a way around it, who actually uses the software that originally came with their devices when rooted. I heard the same thing and my next door neighbor has a Sensation and tethering works like a charm. Your not suppose too use it for running your game console and 90% of the time it's those people doing the complaining about using it and getting blocked.

Same here. With a 5gb or 10gb data plan, you can receive free wireless tethering.
If they are changing the contract you can get out of it. I got out of my contract with over a year left due to the changes they enacted on the 9th of April regarding data roaming. They did not want to let me get away without an ETF but I filed a complaint with my local Attorneys General and that fixed that problem real quick.
As of right now I have no contract anymore on my T-Mobile account, I'm just playing it by ear and waiting for a new phone to knock my socks off before I go find another carrier, but it is nice to know I can drop T-Mo at any moment without an ETF
People who were grandfathered in with true unlimited data aren't affected by this as well, right?
I've been tethering without anything going wrong.
I have the 5GB Grandfathered Preferred Android Data plan for $20 and I've been getting the tethering upsell screen. I heard that the free tethering add-on only comes with the $30 5GB plan or the 10GB plan and that they won't add it on to an Preferred Android Data plan.....
Edit: Called Customer Loyalty and they hooked me up with the free hotspot promo on both lines with Android Preferred Data plans after 2 online reps lied to my face. Customer Loyalty is the reason I stay with TMobile, those people are the best of the best and always help out long time customers. Thank you to all you CL reps out there, I know you're reading this

Yeah, they do tend to get you what you want now that the merger dropped. By chance did you ask them it doing that was going to extend your contract? When I did something similar when I had my G1, it ended up locking my service contract for an additional 24 months. My phone upgrade didn't change dates, just my service end date.

It didn't extend my contract, I asked and checked on the website after.
every time i call t-mobile, they keep offering me the hot spot. i let them know i already have it (i dont think it affects GB?) but they insist that i dont. since they are saying i dont have hot spot, does that mean i can use that as an excuse to get out of contract?

Solavei - Cool new service provider that pays you money!

Stop paying ridiculous amounts of money for your cell phone bill ! Solavei is the most unique and amazing wireless phone service provider out there. How would you like to pay only $49/month for service with unlimited minutes, texting, and data(4G limited to 4gb, which is fine for someone like me who can't hardly use 2gb in one month:silly ??
But it gets better.... When you sign up your friends & family, Solavei will pay you money every month that they stay with the service as well as a few other options to earn yourself some extra cash for doing almost nothing but spreading the word about Solavei.
There is a deal going right now when you sign up before December 31st, you get the first month of service for free. Go check it out you won't regret it.

Sorry that you think I am spamming the forum. If weren't interested you wouldn't have come to my thread in the first place. I own a Mytouch 4g slide, so I thought it appropriate to share [in General] with fellow users of the same phone a great new opportunity. If I was "spamming" the forum there would be more than just one thread on the topic. I don't come to XDA to see other user's noob question threads that have already been answered in the stickies, but I don't complain about it.
If you have a question or a comment that is on topic that would be appreciated. thanks

I pay less for everything included and unlimited. with all the things (4G data, voicemail, texting, call display, call fwd, 3-way-calling, free long distance within either Canada or whole North America and whatever else is there, I don't even remember what else I have) and that's in Canadian Dollars, LOL
Why the f. would I want to pay more for a lesser and so restricted/limited service?

It is not so restricted/limited as you say. And if you think there is any provider that ACTUALLY gives you unlimited data then you have obviously not read your own contract agreement.
But you missed a whole point of my post. The company will pay you money past the point where it cancels out your phone bill (free service). I don't know what is so hard to understand about this concept. I am just here discussing a service I have recently switched over to, and everyone wants to call it spam... good grief..........................

Your intentions are good, but this deal is not.
Essentially it's like all those different offers where they say get a PS3 or Wii, or gift card to any store you want for free!
All you have to do is sign up for 5 offers, complete them and get 5 friends to do the same. Essentially they are using a referral program to get more customers and they're using you for all the legwork. Not exactly a contract, but not exactly a no strings attached deal either.
I bet if anyone decides to cancel, referral person's bonus goes away. And all the people who just signed up have to find their own referrals to get the same bonus as the first guy. Think of it like a pyramid, with your forum thread being the very tip.
You're expanding their business for them and trying to find them all these new customers for $50/trio of people? I say THEY got a good deal.
I've seen many regional carriers offer similar deals. This is nothing out of the ordinary. Check out cricket, boost mobile, and virgin mobile if you don't believe me. Metro PCS too

Kept unlimited data and upgraded to gn3

I just placed an order with Verizon online and was able to keep my unlimited data plan while upgrading to the note 3. I verified with 611 that as long as the system allows it. I will be able to keep it. The Order confirmation shows it and also I saved the chat with another rep saying they are running a promo that is allowing people to keep their unlimited data.
can you please elaborate on that ?

I just went online and went through the upgrade process. I know it use to strip it and force you to a new plan but right now its allowing you to keep it. I actually find it interesting that they would allow this considering VZW just made comments about unlimited data being dead.
I just canceled my preorder for the phone alone at full price. I went online and upgraded for the note 3 and gear bundle for less than the phone retail and was able to keep my unlimited.:laugh::laugh: I kept printouts of it all.
OMG Thank you!
Just cancelled my pre-order and upgraded my line
does this mean your 2yr contract has to be up first or
I can just buy the phone outright @ contract price right if I have an existing contract and keep unlimited data ?
FYI,
I did this successfully last night, and when I talked to a CSR this morning trying to cancel my first pre-order, they told me that I would lose my unlimited data anyway, because it was just a glitch in the system that they were trying to figure out.
They did confirm to me that I could return it and revert back to unlimited data and just buy the N3 outright, as I had planned to do all along, so it's not a big deal.
I'm just saying don't cry if it doesn't work in the end.
Remember, this is Verizon we're talking about. They have no qualms about screwing us over, "contract" or no "contract".
I'm thinking about canceling my preorder to reorder on my account. At the moment i have the Note preordered on my mother-in-laws business account (to be activated on one of her lines, but then I’ll take it). That was the safest way I couldnt think to keep my unlimited. Not sure if i want to risk it
Confident Verizon will keep their end just like they haven't throttled unlimited data like AT&T has. This makes it easier than paying full price which I did for my current Note 2.
It's already been stated a few times that it might change once you activate your device. So be careful... it may lock you in to two years without your unlimited data...
This is coming from Verizon btw.

They haven't throttled because it is illegal for them to do so. The LTE spectrum they bought came with that caveat, and if they throttle LTE, they are in violation of federal law. They throttle 3G all the time because they can.
Rest assured, Verizon will not honor this. They don't care about me or you, and they could care less if we ditch them and run to T-Mobile or wherever else. All they care about is expanding their network and releasing their crappy droids.
I'm canceling my glitch order and going with the original pre-order that I thankfully never canceled.
I know Verizon too well to think this will work out.
Verizon sucks, they have atrocious business practices, and that's not going to change. Don't be fooled.
I would like to think Verizon would honor this. But since they are all about squeezing the last penny out of customers this will be my last straw with VZW.
Even United who gave away free tickets from a glitch honored it.
VZW isn't losing any money on doing this.

I too am almost done with Verizon. Have ordered a Note 3 from TMo to see what my coverage may be in and around Houston as compared to Verizon. I don't expect it to be as good but I'm not looking for that anyway. I'll compare it with the unlimited upgrade I did for the Note 3 this weekend from Verizon or my G4 if the Note falls through. If all goes well, I'll sell my three lines of unlimited, return or sells phones as appropriate and move over to TMo. Verizon just has too much arrogance IMHO.
I upgraded to a gn3 and was able to keep my unlimited data on AT&T. I read somewhere Verizon had a glitch in their oline system that allowed some people to upgrade and retain their unlimited data but they have since corrected it and that the people that were able to retain their unlimited will probably loose it anyways.

buy 40$ refills since minutes after 100 are 10c per min. Then whatever you dont use is carried over. I usually use 34$ a month.

I assume this is a non-contract plan? Do they have more that are non-contract? T-Mobile, in my opinion, has royally screwed its customers. By not allowing customers to upgrade their phones the old way (getting a phone for next to nothing when the customers signs a new 2 year agreement). And their customer service, in my opinion (again) used to be amazing. It has gone to complete crap.
I left them, in contract, so I was happy to pay the 200$ early termination fee to get rid of them.
Doesn't TMobile now have non-contract plans for every new customer? I am not too familiar with them now, since I switched, but I thought this was the case?

There are other choices - might I kindly suggest that you "skim" thru this thread with extensive info & how-to's, etc. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2476995&page=82 (yes, I know & understand that, like most, "we" all hate to read to try to understand how things work .. )
You did NOT indicate what your data needs or usage pattern are - but if you plan to use the Nexus 5 for lots of mobile air minutes to talk, there are unlimited plans for that. Priced accordingly & competitively, they do vary & might / might not have good coverage for your location.
There is Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, and the Walmart plan ... Lately, Target has its own exclusive "Brightspot" plans. Like here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2511152&page=3
Or, do as I say & listen to what I do - leave a reserve fund (like a credit line) for excess minute charges to be deducted once you go over & yes, T-Mo will SMS alert you and you can do short codes to check your account status.
The "Search" button here on XDA - it does miracle finds, usually & often - use it. Have a nice day !

I am not too familiar with them now, since I switched, but I thought this was the case?

all (new) plans from tmobile are non-contract
Tmobile basically separated the phone subsidy with the phone line.
(I don't know the exact numbers, but someone can chime in)
Before, you would be paying $130{?} for 2 lines on t-mobile. now, you'll be paying $80 for 2 lines. You can CHOOSE to finance two Samsung Galaxy S4 phones @ $25/month for 24 months with $0 down, which gives you a monthly fee of $130, similar to before... but the extra $25 a month stops exactly after 24 months. you just can also choose not to take the "free" phone...
As you said, you aren't happy with what T-mobile is doing, then go back to the other 3 carriers (which do the same contract thing. though at&t finally follow t-mobile and added a off-contract $15 discount)... I'm happy with what T-mobile is doing...

Yeah, I am on another carrier now.
Who would finance a phone? That's asinine. I mean if you have to do it, you have to do it, but that doesn't make sense to me.
For me, I was with T-Mobile for 7+ years. I felt as though I got screwed. It may be good for new customers, but not previous customers. It was a big slap in the face for long time customers.

and you are just playing into the trap that AT&T/Verizon/Sprint/{T-mobile} have been playing for the past 10x years.... let the customers get "free" phones every 2 years, but hide the cost within the phone line
now, it's separate... it's the same price as before, just that customers can choose to finance a phone, or not finance a phone(and save $25/month). if you can't see that you have better choices, then sorry, AT&T/Verizon/Sprint would love you. you are the customer that they want
if you had a grandfathered plan, t-mobile would actually give you a better deal(than new customers), to entice you to switch

You could be right, but I am happy with that way of doing business... No worries.
yeah im on verizon now and its just ridiculous .
I'm not going to read the T-Mobile$30 plan thread since I have a working solution.
But for my daughter I set her up with a Callcentric number, Google Voice and Google Voice Callback (available in the Amazon app store) and now she receives and makes all calls over IP.
I find the quality ok when I talk to her though occasionally there are voice delays when I'm using internet calling also.
