[Q] google voice on homescreen - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is starting to frustrate me, so i am seeking for your help:
On top left corner of our note 10.1's homescreens you can always see your google search "widget" right?
I noticed this widget-like thing is looking different on a buddy's 10.1. There is direct access to google voice search. I guessed this is a new feature of the official 4.1.1 firmware, as mine was still running 4.0.4. But after the update I still don't have that feature.
So my question is: how to enable/change that? I have looked for a possible setting on my device for hours now...
For a better understanding let me describe using a picture:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}

What you currently have is Google Voice Search, which is just adding voice to text in the search field. What Jelly Bean adds is Google Now, which is more like Siri but more functional. Just google "Google Now" to see what is adds.

Thanks for the info!
So how do I switch from voice search to google now? I am running official 4.1.1 JellyBean.

I misunderstood, if your already on 4.1 you are already have Google Now, you shouldn't have to do anything. I'm not sure why yours looks different. Mine looks like the one on the right and I am still on ICS and don't have Google Now(still waiting for the update).

To activate Google now, try to long press the home button, or press the home button and strike your finger up in to the display. Either method which works will then launch Google now.

Thanks for the Tip! Unfortunately if I long-press home or swipe home up, it just opens the same grey google search screen it does if I tap on the homescreen's google logo. I still have to choose voice search afterwards. Then it changes to the white google now screen with the red microphone.
On my buddy's note (picture 2), if you tap on the mic right on the homescreen you can instantly start talking. That is the feature I am looking for.
There has to be a way to change that button as it seems to be general JB feature, right? I flashed the 4.1.1 update OTA, is it possible that I need to wipe anything?

Try installing this version of Google search (Now). This is the version that works on my One-X.

No change at all. Seems to be exact same version as I already had installed, since titanium backup didn't notice the install.

To activate google now long press the home button until you see google.Drag your finger to it and it opens up the gray google screen.In the low right corner you see three dots wich is the menu button.Press it and select settings.Then in the upper lefthand corner you can select and activate google now.
Good luck.

I have the same google icon as in the first picture in the first post. Ive noticed if i press mine it opens up into a search bar with the little microphone. Im on ICS still awaiting UK JB on n8010.

Google Play making market shortcut button in motoblur useless

Got my update to Google Play today, was very 'excited' about it and played around with it. No changes.
As I frequent the Android Market, I find the shortcut button on the top right hand corner of my motoblur app list very useful. But when I tried to click on the button to launch the Play Store just now, I got an error.

I do hope that this would be fixed by either Motorola or Google (since I don't put icons on my home screen).
EDIT: This has been fixed in the Google Play 3.4.7 update

Its going to be moto that have to fix it as they control motoblur.
On my phone when it updated my corner button just worked, even changed icon

I doubt motorola will do anything about it
When Google Search was updated, it caused problems to Motoblur as well. If you went into the app drawer and clicked on the search button, Motoblur would force close. And Motorola did nothing about it

So, a solution for the moment could be *don't update*, right? Or is the update mandatory?
just gained the update

Its the reason they changed there privacy policy, so they can have all your stuff in one place

And this is one of the reasons I don't use Motoblur's launcher, switched to ADW EX and its so much smoother. They will probably fix it in the next OTA, you may be able to find a modded launcher apk that has it fixed if its easy enough.

[Q] Apps have dedicated "options" bar at bottom of screen?

So the X has back, home, and recents capacitive buttons but not the "options" button.
Most apps create an options bar at the bottom of the screen. Is this something that can be disabled?

From the looks of it, some apps haven't updated to the new holo design scheme. Some apps need to make use of the action bar a little better. Look at gmail and google maps for reference. If you don't like it there's a possibility to remap the menu key to long pressing the home key (it's been done on the international one x).
I personally hate it! It takes up too much real estate
We need to get a ROM ASAP that remaps the menu button to long-press multitasking or something and then get rid of the onscreen button!
Now if only we could get a bootloader unlock/root...

Here's Google reader with a menu button on the upper right where it should be, and another one on the bottom of the screen.
Ignore the apple folder!
Yea, I noticed the double options as well.
It just doesn't make sense.

App developers just haven't taken the time to optimize the apps yet, just a month ago ICS was a huge minority, and it still is, but with more and more phones being released with ics, we'll see optimized apps, and the weird soft key will go away.
The long press home idea is great, btw.

[Application] GoHome for CM9

Hi guys,
I want to share my application called GoHome which should help to use Galaxy Note on the go.
I've wrote and shared this application not for the money. It helps me to hold Galaxy Note with one hand and use it with comfort.
This application duplicates menu, home, back navigation buttons.
If you on the go it's better to swipe on the top than try to press Home button by thumb.
This is a beta version (design is not ready for preferences).
It has been verified on CM9 (some functionality will not work for GB (back, menu), I'm working on it)
I'll upload it into market soon.
Application itself is completely invisible. Preferences show four color areas where you should pull.
Preferences screen and howto:

What does it do? The pictures aren't loading....
Sorry for picture. I've fixed url.
It duplicates home, back, menu buttons. But all this is on the top of screen. It helps you to avoid pressing to physical home button which is hard to press on the go (with one hand)
for gb its okay but for ics?? navigation bar has the same options??

Yes the same options, but if you on the go it's better to swipe on the top than try to press Home button by thumb.

Dude you forgot one thing.
ICS doesn't need the Home button to be held down. Just hit the "Tasks" button, voila!
Its faster than yours.
Anyways thanks for this, it should be useful.
Especially for those that swap out the "Tasks" button for the Menu button.
But now on most custom roms (eg AOKP) you can customize the Nav-buttons and give them gestures: eg swipe up on Menu button to launch "Tasks" list.

[Q] Anyway to make the top left of the screen more accessible?

I love my nexus 5 but UIs that require me to touch the top left of the screen are hard to reach. Is there any way to apply a per app hack where the top bar can be stretched or maybe lowered? I appreciate I won't be using all of the screen but it will be worth it for a few specific instances e.g. gmail and hangouts.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying your problem is. Everything should be adjustable per your preferences by default. Maybe you can elaborate in more detail.
Had this issue with my Samsung note 2... One of the reasons I bought the nexus 5 is it fits my hands and my thumb can reach the entire screen. This doesn't answer your question but it was my solution to this problem.

Your picture actually did a great job of explaining what you meant to say. I understand now.
Silly question/statement, but do you know that pressing the "Back" arrow in most cases such as that should take your back to where you were. Most often, that specific option like you displayed, that you can't reach, can be activated the same way by hitting the back button.
There are however, plenty of apps and situations where you need to hit an option in the top left corner and the back button will NOT do this action. I have big hands and have gotten used to being able to tap something on any section of my screen.
You could try installing a mod/app to enable custom gestures in which you can swipe a gesture towards the right and set it to that function. (ex: gesture enabled when you swipe from the center of the right towards the middle, it activates a "back" option.
You can try installing "GMD Gesture Control" for this.
Just a suggestion?
Thanks for your reply! I didn't realise the back button could cater for some of these scenarios. I also didn't realise I could swipe from the left for a lot of these apps. This caters for most of the scenarios so I'm happy now, thanks!
Grabbing anywhere on the left edge of the screen and sliding right does the same as pressing the icon up high. Same goes go for play store.
good day.

Question Pixel 7 Pro, swap keyboard?

Is there a way to change the look of the keyboard. I prefer keys that have symbols available on a press and hold.
On my last phone, an LG G7, I was able to install the Google Keyboard that allowed this. Strange that on a Google branded Pixel phone I can't find this keyboard.
Hmm I don't know if this is possible with the stock keyboard (I'll let others confirm or deny). Might be better off using Swiftkey. I know that level of customization is easily accomplished with it, as I use it and have the same preference as you.
i went with smartkeyboard pro cos I'm a dinosaur and have to have a t9 keyboard. its quite old now but still works great.

The stock keyboard does have symbols on press and hold? Are you saying you don't want the symbols visible on the keyboard? I can't imagine that's a very popular feature seeing how I've used these keyboards for so many years and still have to look to see where symbols are from time to time - it's basically the only time I'm even looking at the keyboard - so I'm not surprised there isn't a setting for it.
I prefer to have the alternative symbols showing on the keyboard.
Right now, my stock keyboard DOES NOT have alternative symbols. If I hit and hold on a letter, it types out once, and offers me no optional characters.

I just figured it out!
There's an arrow at the top left of the keyboard. Click it, and another menu pops up with 3 dots. Click the 3 dots , and a Settings gear shows up. On those settings are all the various keyboards and options I've been looking for. Under Preferences I was able to add the numbers at the top of the board, and I was also able to enable "long press for symbols"
