Android Beam/NFC issue - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I have a GS3 and my wife has a HOX. Every time I try to share a picture via the beam, it fails and my phone says that the receiving device does not support transfer of large files. I am able to share chrome bookmarks, though. I'm running 4.1.2 and she's running stock ICS. Thoughts on how to fix this?

I've never got NFC to work on this thing stock or rooted

It has the feature. And I know it can transfer SOME data.

Ive heard about s3 and one NFC not liking each to well

Large file transfer isn't supported on ICS. I tried to transfer a pic from my Nexus 4 to my friend's One X (ICS) and later to my other friend's GSII. You can only do links on ICS (unless they have Touchwiz Nature UX) and other small files. That will be updated come JB. It does work from my Nexus 4 to another Nexus 4 however. Company has nothing to do with it.

If I'm on cleanrom or some kind of mostly stock sense ROM, I can use NFC with my buddies gs3 with a touch wiz rom... When either of us are running aosp ROMs it won't work

When's JB released for the HOX?

An official release? For AT&T.. nobody knows, and quite frankly I am done with AT&T.
/endrant
Telstra will be releasing theirs around 24th of December http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Device-Updates/Handset-updates-14-December/td-p/107834
So you could root and SuperCID her phone and flash the Telstra RUU, or wait for a dev to release a JB Sense version, or wait for AT&T (who knows when that will happen)

The reason Sammy devices can beam anything bigger than an URL is because of their own in-house app, S Beam. Basically uses NFC to create a BT connection between the two devices. This allows two Sammy devices to send larger files. We can achieve this as well, I've used "Send!" from the Play Store with great success. Use it with my gf's HOX as well to beam over pictures, videos and music files. This app basically does what S Beam does, so you'll need the app on both phones.

I'm not an Android expert so I may not understand this, but I'm not running the stock Rom for my GS3. I'm on cm10. Does the S-beam really matter?

S-beam/Android beam creates a WiFi direct connection for larger files, and Bluetooth for smaller files I would assume.
I've never gotten it to work on our device, so I would assume its a ROM/kernel issue. Wifi direct is not that popular so it hasn't been worked on

I stand corrected, thank you. S Beam does use WiDi as well. S Beam, though, is based on Android Beam, just goes the one step further in creating a WiDi/BT connection for larger files. From what I've read, Android Beam is only useful for sending very small (i'm talking kilobytes) files/URLs.

S Beam is a Samsung exclusive app. I haven't seen it be ported to any other ROM that's not based on a TouchWiz ROM.

NFC disabled SGH-i727 (ATT) - How to enable

I noticed on GSM ARENA the specs for the Skyrocket phone say it has NFC.
So I got really excited, but then when I tried to use it, I realized it does not, in fact work.
ATT apparently marked it as not-present and disabled it. (Two problems.)
Anyhow, I found out how to enable it, and I wrote a quick Android App to verify it is present.
I did take a chance and used the Note hack as the model numbers were very close to being the same. I theorized the hardware was mostly the same, excepting the screen.
I searched and apparently nobody has announced doing this before.
The thread used was here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545751
The tool to test NFC on Skyrocket SGH-i727 is here.
Its already enabled on the ICS leaks we have.

Where is the nfc built in on our phones?? I kno on the note its built into the battery cover
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
Its on the battery itself. If you remove the sticker on the battery you can see the antenna

I read ICS has a bug where it can't initialize NFC tags.
This candhelp people on 3.x get their NFC working.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA
NFC in the Skyrocket is on a chip inside the unit itself. Only the antenna for the NFC chip is located on the battery.
NFC was disables by AT&T in stock GB builds, however some custom ROMS, such as Alien, enabled it.
The 4.0X ICS releases (leaks) for the skyrocket have fully functioning NFC capabilities.
Specific phones did (or maybe) still do have an NFC bug (Verizon's Nexus) phone couldn't handle certain types of formatted tags, but the SkyRocket hasn't had this or any other problem NFC related that I am aware of.
I'm writing an NFC application.
I'll plan to upgrade to Alien in the near future. Sounds like fun.
Just the thought of putting a tag on the nightstand, in the car, ... I can do so much with it, but none the apps out there (even Samsung TecTiles App and NFC Task Launcher) do what I want to do. Not that I can run TecTiles on my phone version.
I'm currently running SKY ICS 4.2F-3B with the UCLE2 radio.
I use NFC tags in the car, at work and at home with an app called NFC Task Launcher.

It's very close range by the nature of NFC itself. Depending on if you have a case on the phone, and which case it is, you might need to actually hold the phone to the tag and keep it there for a second. Stock NFC in the skyrocket, regardless of which ROM, gives an audible tone when reading a tag. A file is floating around XDA that will disable the tone, but it is nice to know if the tag was read correct or if there was an error.
How are you guys able to get the NFC to work? I can enable it but when I use NFC apps I get a secure settings needed.

Are you using apps that require secure settings (secure eliment)? If so, it has nothing to do with NFC, it has to do with the app.

[Q] Nexus S Jelly Bean Bluetooth Mono?

I want to be able to listen to podcasts or youtube video when driving, using my Motorola H700 bluetooth mono.
I understand that this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bedoig.BTmono&hl=en
managed to hack it to make it work in ICS, but it seems that it is not working on JB anymore?
Is there any other apps that get it to work?
Works for me with tunein. But not sticher. I guess not compatible with all applications. Running stock ota jelly. Not sure but thinking bout it might depends on what kernel you run.

[Q] DROID RAZR HD - Google Wallet

Does anyone have a way to get Google Wallet on this device? I've tried downloading a modified .apk, moving ot to the /system/apps folder and rewriting the permissions, but I always get an "Application Not Installed" error with no explanation as to why. I'm rooted and willing to go to a new ROM if necessary.

Unfortunately Wallet isn't included with it and it's "not compatible" according to the Play Store. It Is, though, Isis Ready, not that I would use the carrier product over Google's.

I tried to edit the build.prop for the RAZR HD to look like a Gsm gnex, but it didn't work. I'm not sure if I did it right though, but I probably did it wrong, so that would explain why. What would I have to do to change it to look like a gnex?
Nothing has worked so far, so I can't help lol, was just inputting my trials as to what I did to try to get it to work...only other idea I can think of off the top of my head is to install a modified apk file of Google wallet but can't even guarantee that will work because someone already said they tried and it didn't work for them
Beamed via NFC through the local store to the internet from my SGS3.
Anyone have any luck yet?
Well this is disappointing...I'm considering upgrading to this phone and I'd want to use ALL of the NFC capabilities.
I'd really like to see a work-around for this!

Be patient. NFC implementation is still pretty immature. You'll find more uses for it by the end of next year.

new info
I DL and installed Google wallet apk 1.1 r57v5
Side loaded it and the install went thru
I have and NFC sim and Isis installed on my RAZR HD w/o root
It will install with this apk version, but it won't work. At app launch I get an error about it not being approved for my country or device / carrier. This is very similar to the error I got when try to open Isis before getting the NFC sim.
I'm very new to this but I'm hoping I've stumbled on something someone who has a more technical understanding of this issue can build on.
Google Wallet want the secure element in the phone not on the SIM. VZW won't give anybody access to the secure element in the phone.
So unless Motorola writes software that talks to a secure element that is on a SIM, forget it.

Using A-beam with my gfs SIII S-beam?

No one uses samsungs s-beam propitiatory code while one uses standard android code. One uses s-beam which is a combination of wifi-drect and nfc. Android does them separately I believe. She'd need to be running Jellybean for it to work.
You can send small things like contacts, but not large things like pictures or videos.

VRBMB1 source released

http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=search&searchValue=i535
Not sure what's changed in the tree or defconf.
"You should be getting an OTA update soon — if you’re lucky — that will bring your Galaxy S3 to Android 4.1.2. The VRBMB1 build is about 150MB in file size, and for those who are wondering, here’s the full change log:
Keyboard Predictive Text has been improved
Users can take picture while on a call
Manual refresh button has been added to lock screen ticker
E-mail syncing has been improved
Enhanced Bluetooth performance
VZ Navigator and Amazon added to stub applications"
-Android Authority
Seems that is all that was added for now. I was hoping that premium suite would be rolled out sooner. Oh well, the joy of being rooted, and being able to install things like pop up browser anyway.

I have a buddy that uses this option all the time now that he has it. He makes vinyl signs and oftentimes while out working, speaking to a customer on the phone, it's helpful to be able to take a picture without having to hang up. Sure, not everyone will utilize this feature, but like a dozen other features on your phone, it's great to have them regardless of whether you'll actually use them or not.
