[Q] Can someone please explain this to me?? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I was on CM10 and i felt like checking out the OTA jelly bean update. I figured the easiest way was through a custom rom. The one i picked was Stock Rally or something like that. Anyway, i flashed it and when it installed the boot.img it wiped my entire internal storage. I knew flashing a boot.img wipes the storage but i didnt know this ROM would flash one. I managed to put everything back the way i had it when my messaging app started to force close. I reinstalled the zip thinking it would restore the default messaging app. When it got to the boot.img part it took unusually long again. Wouldnt you know, it wiped my internal storage again. How does this happen if it was the same boot.img?? Im extremely frustrated because now i have to take another 2 hours to get my phone back to the way it was. Can someone please explain how this could happen and if theres an easier way to go to the official OTA without wiping my internal storage again?

How are you flashing it?
Edit: I just checked it the ROM. I can now explain your problem. You downloaded the THE WIPE VERSION. It clearly says that version will wipe your internal hard drive. To fix it DOWNLOAD THE NO WIPE VERSION.

Yup. Learn to read more carefully

Thanks dude, I should've noticed that. Not sure why anyone would make a ROM that wipes your storage though lol

Cwm recovery not sucking?

At this point I've tried every method of flashing, and every version of cwmr. No matter what version or method I use, after about a week, I lose the ability to flash any roms that I havnt already flashed. I also can only restore certain backups due to.an MD5 mismatch. Has anyone else had these issues?

Ya I downloaded it and everything and tried different ways and it wont let restore, just says md5 sums mismatched tried 2 sdcards and downloading them in root of sd card and directly in the CWM/restore folder. still a no go, but I can restore other backups and flsh roms. just not the one i need.
Probably won't get to it till thursday or so, but im going to try and go back to completely stock, reroot, reflash cwr, flash cm7. Otherwise im getting a replacement...
Ps
The dl posted in another thread for me failed as well. I also had an intense the other day where all my partitions were completely wiped. It took 3 hours to finally get nv flash to flash cwr and flash a rom.

My SD was bad! Reformatted in cwr, then in settings SD and storage... dl cm7, and flashed. Just remember to copy ALL the contents of your sdcard cause formatting WILL DELETE EVERYTHING!

Ok if anyone is still having problems, id like to mention that I exchanged my 5 year old 2g simcard yesterday for a new one, and bought a new 16gb class 4 sandisk sdcard, and EVERYTHING is working great! so far maybe only 2 or 3 occurrences of data loss, easily corrected with a battery pull. And I borked some lib files trying to get the camcorder to work. So I installed the kanged version update-cm-7.1.0-RC0-G2x-KANG-signed.zip overtop of my build to get the rom to boot again, and now the camcorder works! Maybe only about 15fps but works nonetheless...

Very strange..

So I used odin to upgrade to stock ICS. All my apps are there, including all the data. So are all the settings, files on internal storage. I did lose my root and had to reconfigure my hotmail Email. However Flash is not working...I thought odin would erase everything including internal memory? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Edit
Odin didn't trip the flash counter either. I found that out when I was going to flash cwm.

do a reset from within ics should do the trick, funny thing is people complain that they lost all their apps and settings .

did u follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398
ur the guy that had probs w/kies not the guy on a mac, sorry
did u go through the odin issues on that guide, specifically
•if the phone boots into any rom, make sure windows can transfer from and to internal and external sdcards to rule out driver issues
•does kies recognize your phone, even if you are on a custom rom kies will recognize your phone, this rules out driver issues
edit: check what version u have in settings/about phone, post screenshot if u can
No need to Wonder remember this is your official update so every Things stays intact when is done with odin, the ONLY Thing you lose is your root. Just have to Root again and get rid of the bloatware with tb

i remember losing everything when doing, but i have a bad memory, im going to do it again to confirm, im going to go str8 from skyics to rogers ics, then ics to rogers gb and see what happens, i know but im bored and perplexed
edit:confirmed..i have a bad memory, went str8 from skyics, to rogers stock ics the odin way and it does keep your old apps, settings(wifi,bt, sms messages, call logs, etc)
now im going to go to rogers stock gb from rogers ics
edit: going from stock ics to stock gb is a no go, it seems that it did wipe the apps/settings because it booted w/the setup wizard, but i could not past the setup wizard, too many fc, rebooted back to stock recovery and performed a reset, rebooted and it worked like a charm, but of course after performing a reset no previous stuff was there

rom manager app g2x

hello all, im very new at this. I currently have G2X rooted stock rom GB, I saw oon googple play about the rom manager and i saw the video example on how they can change the rom. I want to know if anyone has use this app what are the specific steps to use this app with the g2x. I know the phone is special and it may or may not work like the example on google play, also is this app worth it and can it be use safely without damaging the phone.
thank you for the time
You need to flash CWM using NVFlash on the G2x; ROM Manager won't do the trick.
Look in the forum fire a thread titled "Getting Started with your G2x" or something like that.

Just make sure you use NVFlash and your good. First time I tried to get cm7 on my phone it got stuck in a boot loop easy to get out of but just use nvflash saves u the hassle I'm pretty sure somewhere on the cyanogenmod forums they got a guide on exactly how to use it with pictures worst comes to worst Google it

thank you all very much...my phone already has the CWM... im just very nervous of chaingin the rom again. When i got this phone it originally had froyo and i didnt wait for the OVA update so i use lg then i had a few problems so i rooted to fix the battery with some apps and now I want to change the rom to the cm7 rom but im very nervous about it and i need to know how to do that and how to download that rom
As long as you used NVFlash for CWM, it's super easy. Just download the ROM you want and save it to your SD card. Then go in CWM, wipe data, cache, and system, then choose "install from zip file"and select the ROM you downloaded. Voila
Oh, and don't forget gapps, too. It installs the same way

You could easily find this but
1.download cm7 and appropriate gapps
2.go into recovery recommended you make a backup
3.wipe data and factory reset, wipe cache partition, go to advanced>wipe dalvik cache
4.go back install zip from SD>pick cyanogenmod
5.install zip from SD>gapps
The names of what to click may be off by a bit and You probably already found this or know how but just in case xD

The good thing about this phone is it's practically impossible to brick it. Worst case scenario you can always use NVFlash to recover it

Not sure odin to stock worked

I had some issues when trying to odin to stock to update to ics yesterday. Not sure everything was wiped. My wallpaper was still the same after wiping cache and doing a factory reset.my phone did update to ics tho. How can I reset to factory with the new ics update? I don't want to lose that. I want to make sure I get everything wiped correctly before I root ics.

I think Google backup your wallpaper too, I changed my phone and when I signed in with my google account the wallpaper I was using in my last phone appeared...weird
I just connected it to my computer to root, and everything is still on the internal sd. Binary shows custom also. Is there anything I should do? Im also noticing bad battery life.
Could someone update the odin to stock forum with the new file and procedure? Might help to have that in one place do ppl arnt hunting for it.

TWRP from CWM???

Was gonna give TWRP recovery a try... I am currently using CWM and didn't know if it would be safe to just use the goo app and flash TWRP that way. I have always used CWM and wanted to try something new and just want to be safe when going about it.

Yes you can install TWRP any way you like. One recovery will simply overwrite the other. Nothing to worry about.
My only brick
The one time i ever truly bricked a phone after close to 30 times rooting and unlocking boot loaders was with TWRP and this phone. I am talkin complete brick, like qualcom drivers request show up on windows brick, the kind brick that you just throw at a window, because you got no charging light, no vibration, no light what so ever.
Btw i was only flashing a rom
I never touched TWRP after .
Thanks for the input guys..... Gonna stick with CWM for now. Seen a fair amount of negative stuff towards TWRP in the forums and don't want to risk anything.

Seconded.
Used the gooapp to flash twrp and haven't had any problems. In fact I switched over from cwm because while installing liquidsmooth cwm kept giving me error 7. Everything I googled told me it was a problem with my recovery, so switched to twrp and presto
Although watch which version of twrp because I was reading the Cleanrom lite thread and ppl were having issues with the latest twrp at the time of their postings. It was around end of September that they were saying this, I believe.

I used to use cwm and now have been using twrp and have never had a problem. This guy above you can't blame twrp for your brick you don't know if that's what it was. Twrp I like better cause I can move my backup folder and copy it even to another computer. Cwm has the blob folder which you can't see which files belong to which backup so you can't just move one backup you have do do them all

Don't know what you were looking out but CWM is the one where the wipes/format are on different pages. All wipe options in TWRP are on the wipe page right next to each other. Newest version now released.
