[Q] GS3 booting in Android System Recovery and NOT CWM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I am currently on stock ICS with unlocked bootloader and rooted. I have flashed CWM 6 onto my Galaxy S3 (535) multiple times followed many tutorials and videos but every time my device boots back into Android System Recovery 3e - I have even disabled Auto-Reboot while in ODIN and have pulled battery after PASS! (as suggested in other tutorials) but it will only boot into CWM Recovery on the 1st reboot. The next time the device restarts it goes back into Android Recovery. I am able to boot into CWM if using Rom Manager and select reboot in recovery. In searching while trying to get a resolution, this seems to fairly common problem. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to get my device to CWM Recovery vs. Android System Recovery. It is driving me nuts and I have spent hours trying to figure it out - any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - I've tried deleting both the files, when I delete it says are you sure - I delete and the files do not remove....how should I delete?

Just add .bak to the end of the file name

Reporting in good news - I was able to successfully get the device to boot into CWM Recovery every time. I tried every method 6 ways to Sunday and I'm not a 100% sure which one actually allowed it. I ended up OTA'ing the new VZW update and used OTA Root Keeper to keep root. I appreciate the help! Happy Holidays!!!

[Q] Problem* flashing ICS

After much consideration I decided to root and install ICS from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354263 following this guide.
I rooted successfully and used ROM Manager to make a backup. When I came to installing the mod, my phone is just stuck on this screen -> http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7960393/IMG_20111125_125549.jpg
It has been like that for about 15 minutes. Can anybody help me?
Thanks
EDIT: Apparently clockworkmod recovery got wiped :s
Flash a new cmw with fastboot and you'll be set.

Have you tried do go through the steps of the one click root process again? (assuming that is how to you rooted your phone the first time)
If you can boot into the OS, flash cwm twice in a row using Rom Manager. It takes two flashes to get the recovery to stick.
If no OS, push the cwm file using adb.

[Q] Rooted my verizon s3 with instructions on this forum and now I'm am stuck

Everything was fine with the root however I used a font app installer that got the phone stuck in a boot loop (on the rainbow screen). How do I get back to rooted JB?
Did you do a back up of your original rom? You need to get back into recovery...
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No I didn't. I didn't see that in the instructions or I missed it. Any thoughts on how to get back to rooted JB?
Well if the font app got you into the boot loop then I don't think you lost root, I would get back into recovery wipe cache and hit reboot... See if that works... Good luck
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Unfortunately, I tried that. I think I did an accidental factory reset too but nothing has brought it back from the boot rainbow screen.
Did you unlock using EZ Unlock v1.2? You only mentioned that you rooted.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
No, I didn't use that. I followed the instructions to root found here (worked no problem until I met that $&#^%#& app) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 I think I can reset using Odin I just don't know what to use
Aight, well did you unlock the bootloader? Your response dictates the suggested route to resolve this.

I did follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader
If that's the case then you just need to boot into recovery and flash a rom. If you were running just stock rooted & unlocked VRBLK3, it's easier to just flash a rooted stock rom like the official VRBLK3 leak here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2034118
Try just flashing that, without wiping, then boot into the rom.
or
If you were on a custom rom, just reflash that rom via recovery and you'll be fine. Unfortunately you lose all your settings of you wipe data in recovery so try reflashing either option without wiping if you absolutely need to try recovering whatever data already exists in your current rom. If this doesn't work, format data, wipe cache then flash the rom.

I will give it a shot and let you know. Thanks so much! I was on stock ROM btw.

Yes it does need to be there. If you have an sdcard just drag and drop onto it directly then flash in your custom recovery. Conversely, you should be able to boot into recovery and try connecting your phone to the laptop then dragging the zip over.
The longer method will be to Odin flash VRBLK3 and start all over from there.

Aight well since that failed, you have to do this the long way: Odin flash the VRBLK3 rooted image from your laptop onto your phone. Choose one of the two images for VRBLK3 and follow the directions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
Edit: I realize I didn't ask but do you have an sd card?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
That worked! Thanks so much. Now, what is the best practice for backing things up so that I don't have this problem again? Should I root first then backup? Do I still have to unlock bootloader? Just wanting to handle this properly from this point forward.
It should be rooted already if you installed the Odin files from MrRobinson thread. It should come with either SuperSU or SuperUser correct? You also should still be unlocked but you can re-unlock using EZ Unlock v.1.2 from the following thread and you're undeniably unlocked. You'll hear a brief audio message if it worked.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-app-920-ez-unlock-14-easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader/
Also, please perform a nandroid back in CWM so you have something stable to return to if something goes awry in the future. That backup would have cut all this down to one simple step. You don't need to be unlocked to perform a nandroid however you do need to be rooted with a custom recovery.
Lastly, perform an IMEI backup using the "Comprehensive IMEI Backup" thread in the dev section. Do this and save the resulting Synergy zip from backup methods A and B in more than one place not on your phone. This is more so a precaution because flashing things in recovery can and may result in a complete loss of connection with Verizon.

If you achieved root then why not just download ROM manager (play store) and flash CWM through the app or if you want TWRP instead which I recommend the get the goo app from the play store and flash TWRP through that app in the same manner.

A small rooting dilema

Hello everyone, I'm completely new to androids and I recently rooted my phone with CF's Auto Root.
I've been scouring the forum for information on how to resolve my problem but none that really help me with my specific problem
I want to re root with clockwork but can't find anything on it
Can someone help me out here? Sorry for sounding really dumb, I just switched over from apple this stuff is a completely different world to me
Completly factory reset your phone n try rooting again . If it fails, you need to root using the same software as you did earlier

So with my original method I've rerooted my phone. How do I install clockwork mod on a rooted phone if it wasn't installed in the rooting process?
Take a look at the "goo manager " app and TWRP instead of CWM.
But CWM also has an easy install app if your phone is supported. Just see if it is or not and go from there either way.

Thanks for answering Pennycake.
I'm on Rogers Carrier OEM firmware right now and I'd like to flash the international firmware as to rid bloatware to my Note 2.
Which app would you recommend me to backup my rom with?
I've successfully rerooted, I found the problem with my phone. After it had been unrooted it needed to be rebooted in order for some effects to take change. So through the original method of CF-Auto Root, I rerooted my phone. I've installed the standalone ClockWorkMod app but it doesn't seem to make back ups properly. Through the app I hit back up and it shows the time stamp I hit 'ok' and my phone shuts off and starts up in recovery mode only not in ClockWorkMod but Android system recovery <e3> or something along those lines with only options to: reboot, install updates from adb, wipe data, etc.
What am I doing wrong?
Try installing the recovert img using clockworkmod before backups, because its not an app error, it is a user error. Using chainfires root method means no cwm. Using odin or lemme guess, you have a gs3, unified tool kit you get cwm.

What recovery do you have right now? If it's twrp (team win) do that go with clockwork mod. Twrp (goo manager) is by far (in my opinion) the best and user friendly. But it's your call. And you don't have to un root and re root to do it. You just have to flash the new recovery via bootloader and it will work. For rom choices I personally like jedi xpx and jellybam. With jedi xpx you can overclock the sh*t out of your note 2 to 1920 and it's still stable.
I've used many recoveries and twrp is my choice hands down. And yiu make back ups easier. So dont unroot again and re root. Just download the latest twrp and flash through bootloader. but to each their own

I'm on the Galaxy Note 2 i317m in Canada. Clockworkmod isn't letting me back up, everytime I get the box with the timestamp to create a back up I hit 'ok', my phone reboots into recovery mode and its the stock recovery, so no option to restore. Also when my phone's model isn't listed in the clockworkmod flashing menu within the app. Is my phone not supported? The N7100 is the one listed when it asks you do confirm a phone model.

[Q] VZW GS3 ODIN and Recovery issues

Hello All - I am a long time viewer of the forum, Recently I noticed an update available for the GS# to 4.2.2. I downloaded the Rom and began my normal process of using ROM Manager to boot into recovery mode to install the latest file. When the update finished applying I was presented with a brief view of the Samsung boot screen and then remained stuck on the Google Boot Screen.
I downloaded a stock firmware to apply with Odin 3.07 but it fails halfway through the write process.
Can someone please give me a hand or point me in a direction if you experienced the same problem.
Also when I try to load into recovery mode the phone screen remains black.
Thanks for any help!
Nick
What rom did you try to upgrade? Link please? And just to verify, do you have a Verizon GSIII?

I tried to download the 4.2.2 file from the following location, rootzwiki - "aokp-d2vzw-jb-mr1-build-4", went through rom manager and now is timing out on the google screen.
I do still have the phone with me currently. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I never use Rom Manager so that's not surprising to me. When you pull the battery then hold power, home, and Up until it vibrates does it boot to recovery? I would suggest flashing through CWM.

Thanks SlimSnoop I have tried roughly 15 times and am still not having any luck, are there any other tools you or anyone can suggest??
Yea, as long as you can boot into download mode then I suggest you utilize Odin and flash a stock image. There are two routes that you can go:
1) Odin flash the Verizon OTA VRBLK3 stock tar from DroidStyle's guide in the dev section. With this method, you would be returned to out of the box VRBLK3 and would need to root/unlock then flash roms again. The Odin tars included here are labeled as wiping /sdcard so be mindful of this.
2) Odin flash a rooted VRBLK3 image from mrRobinson thread. His thread contains Odin flashable rooted tars that are exactly the same as the OTA equivalent except they are rooted already. With this method, you would just need to unlock your bootloader using EZ Unlock v1.2 before flashing any custom roms. There's two versions of each rooted image here, one that wipes /sdcard and one that does not. So if you download the one labeled as wiping /sdcard all of your contents will be completely erased.
