I have attempted to root my phone using the method described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11321163&postcount=1
I followed the steps in the effen-manual.html
I must be doing something wrong. I have tried it 3 times now. The phone appears to be rooted, as I can tether via wifi with it, but I have no audio period.
I followed a rooting method that was posted here (I think) a few months ago that worked...I can't seem to find it anymore It involved keying in commands on the phone. It worked for me fine...don't ask why I need to root again
Is there an easy fix to get the audio back?
Thanks,
B2
Flash a ROM, any ROM with the audio fix. Try Inspired Ace, I think it's a good starter.
stonewallmike is correct. All you need to do is install a rom and you'll get sound back. Personally I love [ROM][May 31]RCMix3D KINGDOM v1.2 Evolutionary Sense! THE ORIGINAL SENSE 3.0 DHD. Here's a link to it if you like sense you'll love this rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984805
Its in the android dev section usually on the first page.
Where do I get the "Inspired ACE ROM"?

From the inspired ace thread in the dev section.
Sent from the computer I carry in my pocket.
Ill include a link. But all roms are in the android dev section under the inspire section.

I'd still recommend checking out the one i posted early very nice very stable. But to each his own.

I know I'm too nice lol. I admitted to being an enabler. I also said that roms were in the dev section on both of my post. So we know he didn't look. Personally I'm trying to get my post count up so that's why I'm being nice. Also in the effen manual it says no sound unless you use the sound patch. And also recommends flashing a new rom.

I'm a bit confused. I've been reading online for a while, and don't fully understand the ROMs available and what not. (I am a computer programmer, so I'm fairly tech savvy).
Basically, my evo shift has 2.3.3. I did a factory reset hoping it would back down to 2.2, but it did not. Now, I'd like to install 2.2 so I can root my phone. Is there a way I can do this? I've also seen a few roms (ie: evervolv) that are rooted. How can I install these (i'm using a mac).
Also, what do you guys recommend? Should I install a ROM, downgrade to 2.2 (how?) and root, etc?
Thanks!
You cannot downgrade to Froyo.. Sorry. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218580
Sent from Gingerbread Speedy 4G
You can only temp root right now with 2.3 on the Shift. A factory reset just wipes everything and basically gives you a clean OS...it's like getting a new phone. The good folks at HTC should be releasing the the source code and kernel between now and EOL of the phone.

When ppl aren't sure what they are reading they have to ask. It may seem stupid to ppl who aren't new but to someone new, I can see it happening, especially if they don't want to brick their phone!
just my 1.5 cents worth
Yeah, I've read lots. I posted because it's good to have clarification.
I've read that you cannot "downgrade" to 2.2 from 2.3, but that doesn't necessarily answer my question if I can flash a 2.2 ROM..
I know 2.3.3 isn't rooted yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean I can't flash a ROM with an older, rooted version (very common in modchips for gaming systems.. If the company releases an update, you can usually re-flash the chip to the old update and be good to go).
So, it seems that if my phone is 2.3, my *ONLY* option is to temp root, is that correct (impossible to reflash, reprogram, etc)?

You need root and recovery (or the old hboot) in order to flash anything. So yes, until a new root method is found your only option is to temp root.

I thought this was already the case.
Questions like this should be asked in the Q&A forum. Period.
Also, one should spend time reading the first 1-2 pages of each forum, ESPECIALLY sticky threads before posting. It is obviously clear that the original poster did not spend ANY time reading.
I was a noob once too - but I took the time to do my research and spent an evening or two browsing threads and learning when I first flashed my HTC Tilt. Same for when I bought my Tilt2. Same for when I bought my Huawei S7, and same for when I bought my Infuse and Tab 10.1.
The "teach a man to fish" proverb applies here. If you just handhold a user, they will never learn anything. If you force them to spend some time reading threads, they'll start learning how to educate themselves and learn a new device without asking questions about stuff that is widely documented.

That's no excuse! I've been in this game for years and have learned almost everything I know simply by reading. If I can do it so can the noobs. Period. This guy deserves everything and anything he gets. I'm with Entropy. They must be forced to learn!
I'd say "ok guys back to topic" but instead I'll say "crap, here comes Neo again!"
Agreed.
A bit of reading would help everyone. Generally speaking, most questions have probably been asked before and even if they haven't; it is best to search anyway because you might stumble across the answer.
I'm all about being helpful, but constantly coddling people while they do the wrong thing isn't helping anyone. I want us to have a large user base so that our development continues to expand, but not just so that we have a lot of ignorant people running around posting the same thing over and over without doing a bit of searching.
It isn't as if this post was some desperate call for help because their phone stopped working after installing a ROM. It was just someone being lazy.

Randomblame's kernel source code is freely available for you to download and build. There's nothing more 'open source' than that. Extracting a compiled kernel from someone's ROM without permission and put it into your own ROM is clearly not.

I did ask him in the first place but he totally disagree with it. What's wrong with using a ROM in the first place when it is meant to be shared among other peoples? Why are people getting selfish nowadays? Even if he spent 100 over hours with that ROM, whats wrong sharing a kernel? Not like he bought the whole CM10 down, so it should be shared among people.

It is being shared. You can get the source. If you don't know how to compile it, you should learn. Not steal. Instead you're getting upset at him not doing the work for you. kind of not cool. If you really want to push out your own ROMs so bad, learn how to do the legwork in the first place.

If you think it is very easy to do compiling of stuffs when you have a computer which has only 512mb of ram, not even reaching 1ghz single core, show me that you can do it. And if you think it is very easy everything from the basics, go try it yourself. If you can't even produce a ROM, don't come teach me what to do. I was rushing my work to show to everybody that the v1.9.2a update would work perfectly but indeed I had broken the rules by taking RandomBlame's kernel without permission. Till then if you can't produce a ROM, do not teach me what to do. I managed to get this phone , which was already like 2 years old from my family, and my whole family is not that rich. We can't even afford a 'normal' PC like most people had nowadays, and had to live our lives with mostly second hand stuffs. When I got this phone, I was totally shocked how the HTC Sense made the phone laggy for me, hence I went into modding my phone, trying to build Chinese Custom ROMs into this development forum, and seeing people able to appreciate my work makes me happy. Now my family is even having difficulties saving money up for my school fees that I have to pay.
So if your life is not like mine DO NOT TALK LIKE YOU ARE THE BOSS OF THE FORUM. -End Of Speech-
This post is for anyone newly rooted and looking to flash a custom rom.
There is a popular AOKP rom out there named Ice Cold Jelly. From what I have heard, it is a well designed, full-featured rom, but you should be aware that it was created for the quad-core Tegra 3 version of the One X. There is no version of ICJ for the dual-core S4 One X/XL. [Edit: There is now--see below]
What's worse, however, is that attempting to flash ICJ on an S4 One X/XL may permanently brick your phone. This is because the two processors use different partition layouts. What happens when you try to flash ICJ?
absolutelygrim said:
The biggest problem with ICJ is it writes a kernel for a completely different processor to p4, 5, 6 and part of p7.
P4 is one of the most crucial partitions for these phones. It overwrites p4 with what is basically crap. Killing the phone.
Click to collapse
P4 is the extended partition table. When you overwrite that, the CPU has no way to find the OS. So it simply stops and goes into what is known as QHUSB_DLOAD mode.
If you are on 1.85 or earlier firmware, there is a fix for this problem though it's a bit tricky [EDIT: Maybe not--we've got at least one report of a 1.85 phone perma-bricked by ICJ]. If you are on 2.20. however, there is currently no known way to unbrick your phone [Edit: Other than paying for a jtag fix], and there may never be one. You will have created the proverbial paperweight. I have seen at least 10 people do this since root for 2.20 came out. Please don't add to the list.
Most people who run into these problems get them because they rush things and don't research enough beforehand. Still, if this post saves even one person from bricking, it will have served its purpose.
If you're coming to this post too late, here's the WIP thread for the potential fix.
[Update 12/7/12] The dev for ICJ has added asserts to the rom, meaning it will fail to flash on the S4 One X and nothing will happen (unless you've wiped /system first, in which case the asserts won't do anything). However, as there are plenty of older versions floating around on unofficial sites, it should still be avoided like the plague!
[Update 02/11/13] We've now got a dual core version here. So there's now really no excuse if you bricked.

I'll just post the link to that page then.

that thread doesn't need random posts
i've been submitting alot of links to the resource page lately. might get a few more added. i want to make a nice op layout for it, with maybe drop down menus so people can see where they want to go before being overwelmed by so many links.

I see where you're coming from but, at the same time people are looking around for what to do. I figure that if a link to that page is the second post, or even in the OP, it would help a lot of people out from going to the international forum. Like we see quite a bit actually.
I found the index page and was immediately bombarded by links, If that had a drop down menu and what not to make it more organized....:victory:

That's what i said in my last post.
Can you please add to the OP something along the lines of
1.85 USERS, YOU MAY BE IN THE SAME BOAT AS 2.20 USERS IF YOU FLASHED ICJ
I just worked with someone who said he was on the 1.85 firmware and flashed ICJ.. No dice, device looks deader than a door nail, besides the fact that I see it going in and out of QDL mode..
No partitions show up, no writable state, nada.

That was mine haha DONT FLASH ICJ WHATEVER YOU DO!
I wonder if adding the processor for each phone to the forum titles would prevent people from flashing the wrong stuff.

There are warnings all over both forums. The problem is people don't read before they do this, and many of them pick up these roms from random websites and never even come here until they're bricked.

That explains things then.
If people want this ROM so damn bad why don't we just port it over?? Is that doable?

nope
Even if a port were do-able, people would still screw it up. It's human nature!

We had a port of a Tegra 3 Rom in this section for a little bit when Sense 4.1 came out. Worked perfectly fine and had no problems with installation.

You can port it. But just changing the updater script would still cause a brick

Honestly just let them brick, they should be more careful.
