Twrp Failed and Phone's Possibly Bricked - HTC Inspire 4G

So I wanted to flash a new ROM on my HTC Inspire 4g using TWRP. Well, I cleared the system, cache, etc. Then when I tried to flash the ROM it failed. When I tried to turn on the device it was stuck on the HTC logo. I tried many other ROMs however they have also failed. I tried updating TWRP using adb and fastboot but it also failed. Is my device bricked?? How can I fix it.
(This is my 1st post, sorry if I did anything incorrectly I desperately need help.)
Thanks

S-off, Thanks for replying.

Click on my signature, go to the second post, search for the pd98img of 4ext. I'm assuming that recovery is giving you problems. Not sure since I have never used it. Instructions should be in that post.

Sorry but I can't find the instructions, can you point me to the right direction.

My bad, they are not there.
Place the file in the root of the sd card (outside of any folder).
Reboot/boot into hboot, follow the on screen instructions. Once you are done, either move the file from the root of the sd card or delete the file.
Once done, check to see if you have a recovery.
In that same thread in post#7 you'll find a guide with a different method for getting a recovery, I would suggest to read the guide first, see if you a different solution to your issue or which of the two methods you prefer.

Sorry for the late reply, but I fixed thanks to you. I am so thankful of you. I was just minutes away from buying a new phone. Thanks for all the help. Again, sorry for the late reply.

I'm glad you got it sorted out. All you need to do is return the favor when someone needs some help. Take it easy.

CWM blackscreen? Look here before posting!

So you are looking at this because you have recently rooted your phone. You are probably trying to flash your first rom and either, you booted into recovery and it was a black screen, or your tried flashing a rom from rom manager and it goes to a black screen.
Now most dev's have a faq posted to eliminate new posts popping up every day, but here I will attempt to tell you how to fix this.
FIRST MAKE A BACKUP the screen will go black when it is backing up, but wait 10-15 minutes and your phone will reboot.
Currently there are three options. There are other options, but these are more user friendly.
Option 1
1. Place This(thanks to nsnc) file on the root of your sd card, boot into hboot by turning off fast boot, restart, hold power+vol down.
Click to collapse
Option 2 (longer then option 3):
1. You can return your phone completely to stock removing root and s-off. You can find a very helpful link to do that here.
2. Once your phone has been completely returned to stock, download the Hack Kit(thanks to attn1). Make sure you follow the instructions completely, and to a tee.
Click to collapse
Option 3:
1. You are going to need to eng s-off the phone using the one click eng s-off Here(thanks to jkoljo).
2. Once you eng s-off and have a working cwm it is highly recommended you turn eng s-off, on. So that you only have radio s-off. You can do that by using this PD98IMG. Download and place on the root of your sd card. You will need to boot into hboot using power+volume down. When it asks you to update select yes with the volume buttons. (note this is just like flashing a new rom so it will do a full wipe)
Once you have radio s-off you may have to flash an older CWM recovery, but you can now restore your backup if you wish to.

Currently these are the known ways to fix this problem. If more ways should arise they will be added to this post.
Please be sure to READ the dev's FAQ section as well.

I considered using that, but I wanted to make the process more user friendly.
did you see the update at the bottom of the first post? I put that PD98IMG.zip on the root of my sd and then went to hboot and let it find the file. Worked great.

The only thing I ask is that you post the post where you found it/ and or the person who made it.
Am I to understand all we have to do is put this PD98img.zip file on the SD Card (after renaming it) and it will clear up the CWM problem we are having without doing Eng-S-off? This seems pretty easy, but I am curious about what ROM it is when we reflash, is it the Stock AT&T?

This is not a ROM file, just a repaired bootloader that installs using hboot. AFAIK, it leaves whatever ROM you are using intact. In fact, on my phone, it didn't change a thing, other than clockwork now works...
See my post above. NSNC posted this fix a while back. The PD98IMG is in the update of the OP

Worked great for me too. At last, let the ROM flashing begin! Thanks for finding this.

Sure: My phone has been rooted, I entered CWM, downloaded Cyanogenmod and attempted to flash it. I followed the prompts, backed everything up, and when installation (I guess you call it that?) began it went to a black screen.
It is still in that screen, I just tried holding down the power but nothing occurred.

It might of failed to flash, I would pull the battery, place the PD98IMG from the first post from option number one place it on your sd card (not in a file and do not unpack) boot into hboot using power and volume down, It will flash the file from hboot, once it has flashed remove the PD98IMG from your sd card, boot into hboot again go to recovery from hboot. See if that works.

There was no reason for you to root without first reading everything. Also there was no reason to root if your not good with phones or computers....just sayin. Please search.
I got your 10 char right here
Wow man best advice is the one given above. I searched for weeks for all issues before I tempted to root. Then days for the issues on custom ROMs. As well as radios. I dont bother with anything else but those. I would say get the rooted ATT ROM (PD98IMG) file, pull battery out of phone then put back, then boot into bootloader by holding volume down and power button at same time. If phone goes to bootloader it will recognize the PD98IMG zip and load it. it will ask if you want to install, just hit volume up for yes and it will do its thing. I couldn't find the page for the ROM so I loaded mine to megaupload it includes the radio -26.10.04.03_M. If you find it in Development Section dont forget to THANK the developer, I TAKE NO CREDIT FO IT. Just place zip file in root of phone micro sd card (not in a folder). (I always use the gold card I made to root the phone). You may have to take card out of phone and use adapter to place zip in itthen put back into phone. AS ALWAYS ON HERE FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK.
AGAIN AS ADVICED ABOVE " RESEARCH" before anything.

No problem

May have just bricked my phone

So I've been using the stock rom but I'm unlocked and rooted. I was thinking of waiting it out for the official jelly bean release but I know how slow HTC is so I decided to try out CM10 today.
I downloaded the newest CM10 mod (nightlies) and flashed it. Upon rebooting I ended up in an endless loop at the boot image. I thought, 'hmm, perhaps not so bad. Maybe I need to look up trying out a new kernel'. I never got around to this and upon doing some other idiotic things (clearing all data, reformatting the SD card), I am realizing I'm stuck. I can't reinstall anything because there's nothing on the SD card. I also can't mount because there seems to be a problem with Team Win's Recovery (2.1.7) in that I get this error: unable to mount /sdcard
Then it says "unable to open ums lunfile..."
So, I'm stuck with an empty SD and seemingly no way to mount. I am able to boot into recovery but I don't know what to do from that point.
Can anyone think of a way to get this phone back on its feet?
And once that is done, is there a clear cut tutorial on how to correctly install CM10?
I had the same problem. You have to extract the boot image from the CM10 zip, and flash that through the SDK.

But didn't I ruin that possibility by formatting the SD? I can't seem to find anything on the SD
I know I don't need to say this, but you need to read a lot through the forum before doing anything to your phone. Also, read the OP pages and first/last 20 pages of any thread. The OP or many posts would have mentioned you need to flash boot.img separate if your hboot is .13 or higher. Or, you can get Flash Image GUI from Market. I would also get a newer TWRP. Recommend 2.2.2.0. There are threads on TWRP/Flash Image GUI.
Some things to look into and read up on before trying:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630459
If that works, maybe push "adb" a rom zip to card
And maybe run an ruu if you get sdcard fixed
As soon as possible get and keep rom and sdcard backups on pc as well as rom bu's on phone.
There may also be a stock sdcard card back up floating around or maybe someone has one to post. There was a thread with one but link is dead. Had the basic stuff the phone came with.
There are some programs that can retrieve data from formatted/wiped drives. May be of some help.
Not sure what else to suggest--you are not lost and someone smarter than me will get you working--good luck--
I have had my sd card corrupt before. There is a thread that talks about how you can re flash the original HTC recovery through fast boot. Then do a factory reset through the bootloader and it will reformat your sd card through a proprietary HTC process. There is a thread about this somewhere. I think you can find the original recovery on MoDaCo (Google it) and somewhere in his posts on rooting. Let me know if you can't find the threads on this.

I did! Thanked your post.
I now have a working version of CM10 with a few bugs which I will have to look into.
They are: Device doesn't recognize the SD card. Apps like Dropbox, the Camera, etc. aren't working because they need to save to the SD. I'm guessing that the file structure is just a little off on the device but I'm having trouble with this because I also can't seem to mount my device properly (I can still push things via ADB)

I'm new to this whole thing so I'm not exactly sure what that means
I am not really up on them, you can google/search. RUU=Rom Upgrade Utility. But, they are like the latest OS from your carrier with radio and everything. You need to relock bootloader and "maybe" flash stock recovery prior to running them. They do not flash thru recovery, you just run the ruu while phone is connected to pc and phone is booted into OS. There is a thread in Dev Section on different ruu downloads. Need to make sure you get correct one. Not sure that will repopulate your sdcard. Assume it is still empty? I was trying to pair down a stock sdcard backup I made before/right after rooting and remove my personal stuff. If you are still having issues, maybe I can upload to dropbox and post. May take a few days--very busy. Plenty of posts on ruu's throughout forum also--

[Q] Sensation no rom

Hi All, I have been a long way down trying different roms having rooted, SOFF, loading CWM recovery..... all with the help of great articles on this site, which I'm grateful for. However I slightly messed up and cant figure out how to get back to where i was. I deleted the rom software I was running in preparation for loading a different rom but I accidently pulled the battery before the replacement rom was installed. On booting the phone hung on the HTC screen. I can boot into the fastboot but when I try to load recovery the screen goes dark, I presume reboot, and hangs on the HTC screen. Is there a zip file I can load onto the micro sd that will load a rom automatically to get me back?
Many thanks

Hi,
Everything looks good in your hboot area.
Look HERE
Step 1. Flashing 4EXT recovery touch
Get 4 EXT flashed onto your phone.
One of the 3 methods will work.
Place a ROM on your sd card
Then, format all partitions (except sd card).
And flash away.

I'm in a very similar position where I can't get a booting rom.
I've tried a number of ways to achieve S-OFF to no success.
HBOOT is 1.18.000.
CID is HTC__038 (India).
Firmware is 1.52.720.3 (I think).
It's currently unlocked using the HTC dev method, and I've got the EXT4 recovery.
I've tried adding the CID to Europe RRU updates, but that always errors in a 12: Signature failed.
I've tried reloading the stock recovery and relocking the phone.
From what I can tell, to S-OFF for 1.18 requires a bootable rom, which I just can't achieve right now.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
You can always flash a matching RUU.

Unfortunately a matching RUU doesn't seem to exist. Google only finds about 4 search results, of which is most useful points back here where someone else is asking for it to no avail.
I've tried shipped-roms.com and a filefactory.com archive, but none suit this particular version.

Hi,
Thank you,kindly.

Did I brick my Inspire 4G?

I'm sure I haven't bricked this phone, because in the process of rooting it, it will eventually say it's S-OFF. But after getting to that point, I can choose Recovery in CWM and when it gets to the white screen with the green HTC logo, after about 4 seconds, it will fade to black. This has happened to 2 phones I've rooted. Luckily mine worked like a charm, but after the last 2...I'm afraid to root another one. Does this sound like a bad memory card, or maybe it's not a gold card? I've searched around and couldn't find an answer, so maybe someone here at XDA has experienced this problem and has an answer.
TIA

I quite don't get that....you can choose recovery in CWM?? what does that is supposed to mean? CWM is a custom recovery. I guess that you are probably refering to hboot. Anyway, if you are S-OFF, then you might not have a recovery installed, so flash a new one (use the guide in my signature or look for post # 7 in the Ace Think Tank in the general section of the Desire HD forum)
Make sure first that you are S-OFF for certain, if you are not, then you won't be able to flash anything at all. Then, try re running the Hack Kit again from the white splash screen as the manual tells you to.

Yes, I guess I did mean hboot. In the process of Recovery is when it will fail and there is a ROM loaded for it to recover from on the SD card. Is it possibly because it is looking for the clockworkmod/backup folder and there is not one? I just realized that maybe I can copy a backup from my phone (we have the same exact phone) and place in there if it's possible. I don't have access to the phone now, as it is a friends. Also, if it fades out at the white HTC logo and just gets hung up, there is no way to re-run the Hack Kit is there?
Thanks for the help glevitan, as you've helped me before and I HAVE downloaded your Ultimate Hack Guide and keep it on my phone for reference.

Just a question, are you sure that the phone is S-OFF? or has an unlocked bootlaoder? In either way you can flash recovery again from fastboot and then a custom rom again.
If you need help, I can lend you a hand via teamviewer..just let me know. :good:

I'm going by after work to pick up the phone and will work on it this weekend. Thanks for the offer of help too. I'll post back with how this turns out.

ok. Good luck!
Ok glevitan, I believe the problem might be in the PD98IMG.zip that's on the root of my SD card. I noticed when the phone booted into hboot, it would display that the image file was wrong, or something to that effect and then would force an update, which would load the HTC spashscreen and then ultimately fade out. I figured it had a bad PD98IMG.zip file, so I found the original aahk-13012012.zip and extracted the PD98IMG.zip from there and overwrote the one in the root. It didn't work. A different story...I noticed on my Inspire 4G (working correctly, but hboot had same error, even though I could load recovery from there) that it wasn't finding the correct image either. I copied over the PD98IMG.zip onto my phone and now both phones are now fading out on the HTC splashscreen after about 4 seconds. This tells me that it's in the SD card, right? If so, any suggestions? Both phones were rooted using this version of aahk.
Edit: Also, with this new PD98IMG.zip image, hboot will go into the process of parsing for
[1] boot
[2] recovery
[3] radio_v2
Once this is done, I push Power to reboot and that's when I get the failure in the HTC splashscreen.
Edit: I noticed in the PD98IMG.zip there was no md5 file, so I stuck one in there and got my phone working (which is not the one with the original issue started in this thread) and was able to restore a nandroid backup. I put this same SD card in the original damaged phone and it didn't restore like mine did. I still think it's an SD card issue causing the HTC splashscreen fadeout, but don't know where to go know.
Also, my PD98IMG.zip only has a recovery.img and a recovery.md5 file in it. I noticed that the original aahk PD98IMG.zip has those along with a boot.img and a radio.img. Should those be in the PD98IMG.zip? I know this post was edited twice and is very jumbled, so if you can make sense of it and offer solutions, much obliged.

Ok, I quite don't get much...sorry, but that version of the Hack Kit is old, so use the lastest one: http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=74
But again, I don't still get if the phone is S-OFF or not. If you are S-OFF there is no need to do all that process. Even, you can flash a RUU without using the PD98IMG way if you suspect that the sdcard is messed.
You can flash it over fastboot.... Anyway, you will have to flash this RUU (which is the gingerbread update 2.3.3 version of ATT. the lastest one, if you are not S-OFF will make things a bit harder for you to run the hack kit later): http://https://dl.dropbox.com/u/30674730/RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_Cingular_US_2.47.502.7_Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_200368_signed.exe
Put the phone in fastboot usb (when in hboot, plug the phone and it should read fastboot usb in red, if not, just press power button to toggle to fastboot). Then, just run that .exe file and it should flash...

Sorry, I thought I had said I was S-OFF. I can get my phone to be fastboot usb when hooked up with a usb in hboot, but can't reflash aahk or anything computer related. It just doesn't seem to recognize anything on the PC.
Edit: And I apologize glevitan, I've searched and found a couple of threads related to the black screen after the HTC logo, so I know you guys have helped and explained this numerous times before. I just couldn't get any of the suggestions from those threads to work out. Thanks for any help you may input.

I was having a similar problem, I'm not too sure if it relates to what your experiencing. But I was trying to gain s-off my hboot was in fact unlocked but was still s-on. I was reading around and flashed a few boot.img with fast boot. I had that problem where htc screen would show then fade to black, and then stay black.
What I did was (I had installed recovery pretty early on) I did a factory reset in recovery then went to restore. Prior to this thank god I had transfered my nandroids to the pc b4 flashing new boot.img(s) then flashed the boot.img from the nandroid I just restored. All was well back into stock. I then found the insecure boot.img to use for aahk, flashed that in fastboot and relocked hboot. Reran aahk in linux. Got me to S-OFF with unlock.
If you need a fairly stock nandroid I can provide one.

Ok, you need to reflash the RUU I posted above....you just need to flash that from fastboot usb. If you can't do it, Then you need to flash it manually. Just let me know and I can lend you a hand over teamviewer. When you get the phone back, then you run the hack kit.

glevitan, you're awesome. I restored the phone by running the RUU executable and reran the aahk and am now fully rooted. Both times I got the black screen on this phone previously was on the same PC, but this time I ran aahk on my PC and it ran correctly. I sincerely appreciate your help in helping me to achieve root for this phone. Hopefully this thread helps someone in the future.

What have you tried? AAHK is the only real option. There is a very clear guide over at the Ace Think Tank post #7, linked in my signature.

Besides what bananagranola said, you need to know that video tutorials suck. They skip important details and that, will probably get you stuck. Read the guide adviced, and the hack kit site (got the link in the Ace Think Tank Thread)...that is all you need to know.
I have tryed the Aahk. My problem is when it ask me to downgrade ruu an all that. All my phone dose when I run the aahk I push 1 an then it ask too downgrade so i put y then something about the ruu an I put y then it says pushing the 9 something file. ( sorry I'm not home on my computer ) so I'm not 100% on what it is saying. But then my phone boots to Hboot dose its thank. Then says bad image. I have done this a lot of times with the aahk. I even tock the s-on off an on. Is there a way that someone can jump into my computer an do this?

Try using a different sdcard. If the RUU image is not being read, that is probably due to a bad sdcard. It is corrupted to work as a goldcard but fine for usual day use.
I have. I have had 4 of them now. Two 2 gigs one 36gig an one 8 gig. New I paid for them an a new USB cored fast data cable for the phone.

2gb is enough...don't use another cable but the oem one that came with the phone. Anyway, that seems to be a sdcard issue. Try with another one and then report back.
I will go buy one more. But I Dont thank its that. An why not use a fast data cored for my phone?
