Reducing size of blobs - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey everyone. I have maybe five or six back ups on my external sd and I tried deleting them through cwm, it doesn't delete the unnecessary blobs I have. My backups take over 15-20gigs.

After you deleted the backups, did you select the option in recovery to "Free up space" on the internal or external sd card?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

No I didn't see that. Will that delete just the blobs?

It'll delete the blobs that are not needed

It deletes the excess blob files associated with the backups that you deleted. That's why they are separate options: delete backups and free up space. If you deleted backups saved on the internal, free up space on the internal via CWM. Same goes for the external sd card. It won't be a night and day difference unless you deleted say 4 backups of the 6 you previously had.

If I'm running out of space on the internal SD card, can I just cut/paste the backup folder to my external SD card or does that mess up the backup/blobs?

Weird. It didn't free up space on my external sd

You would need to take the entire clock work mod folder.

You need to cut/paste the entire CWM folder which contains both the actual backup folder AND blobs folder. CWM backups are a two part deal. You're fine if you do this, I copy/paste one entire backup to my computer.maybe once a month. I only keep one backup on my phone and an older one on a computer.

Five but in total I had ten and deleted just the back ups on my external sd

Hmm, 5 backups at 2 GB apiece should take up about 12-14 gb now. How large is the backup folder and how large is the blobs folder? You may have to delete more to delete more backups and free up space.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

The thing about the blobs are they are the shared data between your backups so if you deleted 5 backups but they were the same ROM just different days. It will only delete the blobs that were that ROM. So if your 5 now a're all different you really still have 5 full backups that still take around 10 gb or so.

Sounds about right then. I have 6 backups and blobs take up about 12gigs.thanks guys!

Nandroid without sd-card

Hey there
Would like to create a backup of my rom. but i don't have a sdcard. In CWM is an option to backup to my internal storage and that's what i also did. Sadly it backed up totally everything. It also backed up my music and even the stock nandroid. after a couple minutes CWM gave me an error because i run out of free storage.
Does anybody has a solution for my problem? Is there a way to backup only certain stuff? Obviously i don't want to backup my old backup. And i also don't care about my music.

My nandroid backup is only 18 mb, no particular option selected, and it's stored in the internal sd.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using xda app-developers app
Only 18 MB? that seems very small to me. Only the room got around 150 MB :/
The backup of my stock rom is around 2.2 Gb
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk 2
Well, I was wrong
In the clockwork folder there are two folders: one is named backup, and every backup is about 18 mb. The other folder is named blobs and it's 3,36 gb

Hmm how many times have you done a backup? If I'm right and CWM always backups your data (like music, old bakups,...) Your next backup gets huge.

I don't know exactly, I always thought that Cwm backups only the system and not the data stored in the internal sd.
I think I'm going to delete the whole folder and backup the system from scratch.
Sent from my GT-P3100 using xda app-developers app
Until now i thought the same. I also had a galaxy nexus without an SD card but i never had any problems. But i think it had two partitions.
On my DHD i don't have any music or backups on my internal storage. That might be the reason why it works properly.
Could you let me know when you did another backup? I'm wondering if you got the same problems. Or if anyone else got the problem.

TWRP backup not appearing

So I'm trying to restore and I'm not seeing anything, the backup is in the twrp folder in the SD card and it's also outside of it in the data folder.
I flashed a 4.2 ROM if that matters since it makes the /0 folder.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yes the 4.2 does matter. Just move the entire twrp folder to the root of your SD card

LOST.DIR size

Here are some screenshots of my lost.Dir. One is showing the size and the other showing the contents. What is this and what is its importance to me?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
" LOST.DIR is created by the fsck utility (fsck = filesystem check)
it contains inconsistent data which was found during the fs check.
This can happen if you not properly reboot or power off the device, or if writing cycles can not be completed."
It can be safely deleted.

It's where files are put if they become corrupt or at least that is the only case I have seen of it. When my ext sd card needed to be reformatted it kept moving my music in it. Have you noticed any files missing? In my case all the files in the lost.dir folder were mp3 so I just changed the file extension but without knowing what those files are suppose to be you might as well just delete them

Yes, I flash to carbon, and I lost a lot of files on the SD, namely my music.

If you haven't deleted them change their file extension to .mp3 and you may be able to recover the ones that are music files

Cwm help

Trying to do a back up on my p3110 8gb, and don't really have enough space to do it,
For some reason it is also saving it before the SD card folder in data/media/something/backup/date
When I try to move it it tells me cannot move files after it attempts and moves a few I'm guessing this is due to file size and running out of space....
Is there a way to get cwm to save the backup to external SD, or at least to SD card directory instead of root? So I can copy the files onto my computer?
Or do I need to go on a deleting spree and potentially lose some gaming data....
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, just pick backup to external. Its like the forth or fifth option down in cwms backup and restore menu

Internal memory full on S3

Hello, I know this question has been asked before but it has been for other phone models and some years ago so the advice given may no longer be the best. Pretty much I have flashed many roms in the past, but I always erase the downloads when I am going to no longer use it. My vzw s3 has 12.05GB of total space available. I have only 1.3GB left to use. I don't know what is causing the space to be used up because my apps only take up 1.2gb, pics 1.2gb, downloads only 1gm and the rest only takes up about another 2 gigs. I only have one backup as well. So I should have atleast 4-5 GB of space free. Is there anyway I can just wipe all the files that are taking up space? Or any suggestions? I don't mind wiping everything off my phone as long as it doesn't ruin my root and brick my phone. Thanks in advanced

Since you don't mind wiping everything format /sdcard in recovery. Just make sure to have a rom on the external sdcard if you plan on just starting everything over.

It deletes everything from /sdcard which is your internal storage. I'm unsure if it wipes the rom as I never use it so I suggest you put one on the external sdcard just in case. You could even pull your external sdcard format sdcard and boot up. If it removes the rom, pop the external sdcard back on and flash that.

Hey so it worked just great. The ROM is untouched although I did an external backup. I got all my 11gb back. The only thing I wasn't expecting was my pictures being deleted. I thought those would be saved

Glad you got the storage space back. Not fun hearing about the photos being gone but formatting /sdcard wipes everything on internal (without discrimination) like I posted.

Yeah, tomorrow I'm going to try reverting back to the backup to see if my pics are back then save them elsewhere and rewipe again.

Pictures won't be in that backup. But you should be using Google's backup options to prevent this sort of thing. Google will backup ask your photos, videos, contacts, apps, etc if you let it. Also set your camera app to save to external sd.
I have the same issue as you with regards to space, I wonder if there's a space sniffer type app for phones that will show you where all your space is being eaten up.

If you've switched between 4.1.2 and 4.2+ ROMs you may have caused some accidental shuffling in how /sdcard is organized.
In Android 4.2 they changed the internal structure to where /sdcard data is actually located. If you use a file browser you may have noticed a mysterious folder at /sdcard/0 which is where 4.2+ stores everything.
It's important to know this so that /sdcard data can be moved back and forth depending on the Android version of the ROM you're using.
I would use es file explorer. It is awesome for browsing the folders on your phone as well as moving files to and from your internal storage. I also always use my external SD for pictures, music and videos I always go into es file explorer before I wipe internal storage to make sure I won't lose something important. Or you can use Google to back up. Google plus will backup photos as well as Drive. Although I've found the auto backup on Google plus to be easier and more convenient.
