[Q] Alternative to AOSP/CM10 Camera? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

The biggest reason for me to keep using the stock ROM on the GS3 is the fact that the camera found on CM10 (The ROM I'm currently running) blows hard.
Is there a decent alternative? I hope there's something, I'm really beginning to miss Sense

I agree. The AOSP camera blows. I wish the stock camera was available for AOSP. I don't have a link but you can search development for the 4.2 camera. It has some cool features and quality is as good as stock for me. Photosphere is neat. Make sure you get the gallery for 4.2 also. Should come as a package. Hope this helps.

Best application for your camera

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask you experts what the best application for an alternative camera that records video in 1080p
I use ARHD 4.1.3 with the Amaze camera. It's awesome, but keep in mind that it only works with Sense 3.5 and the stock Android 2.3.5 kernel. Others use the camera mod by ErosizeD or the MIUI camera. Try them all out and see which one you like best.
Yep, Amaze camera is the way to go!
The problem is that I do not think so CyanogenMod is compatible

Correct. As I said in my post above, the Amaze camera only works with Sense 3.5 ROMs and you have to use the stock Android 2.3.5 kernel. Most of the 3.5 ROMs come with a different kernel than stock, so download and flash the proper one after flashing the ROM. There are quite a few Sense 3.5 ROMs out there, so flash away and see what you like. Just remember to ALWAYS DO A BACKUP BEFORE YOU FLASH ANYTHING.

Keep throwing suggestions out there guys. This guy wants something workable that will work on CM7. Let's stop talking about how great the Amaze camera is and how he should stick to Sense because of it, and give him a real suggestion.
Just tried out a bunch of the cameras off the market. Seems like I'm gonna be stuck on Sense for a while lol. Viginette, Camera 360 left an impression, the others were horrible.

First things first. Never once did I say anything even close to "he should stick to Sense because of the Amaze camera." Don't put words in my mouth. He seemed a bit confused about the fact that it only works with Sense, hence why I clarified further.
Second, I mentioned that both ErosizeD and MIUI have cameras if you would have read more carefully. MIUI camera works on CM7, and there is a version of ErosizeD's mod in the works for AOSP ROMs.
Last I checked, those are both "real suggestions."
Just because you don't use Sense, it doesn't mean that nobody does. While you may run CM7 exclusively, other people may be willing to try out different ROMs, including Sense ROMs. Personally, I'm a CyanogenMod guy. I have been since my G1. I'm simply trying out different ROMs and stuff until a stable build is released. The Amaze camera is fantastic. I would even say it's worth flashing a Sense 3.5 ROM to see for yourself.
To the OP: These 3 options are pretty much the only ones out there right now that I know of. If you want more information, search the forums and see what you can come up with.

AOSP Questions - Had enough of this Sense Joke

All,
I've always had google (nexus devices) and decided to give the HTC One S a go. Honestly, this sense is a bad joke/torture device. Between the linkifyapp, multi-tasking, sense specific apps(calendar, dialer, sms etc) which are just abominations, i've had ENOUGH. These mods are done with absolutely no thought to usability or seamlessness.
Time to try AOSP build, or then return this phone and unfortunately get a plasticy SGSIII with easily available AOSP.
/rant
A few questions:
1) Which AOSP rom would you recommend I run (which one is closest to nexus builds)
a) CM9
b)evervolv
c)AOKP
d)other
2) What are major issues to consider when going to an AOSP rom on this phone?
a) Is there a way to get wifi calling on these roms
b) Does the crap VOIP pop go away on these roms?
3) Are there any issues in getting back to stock incase I need to return?
4) How is the camera compared to the stock cam app (only awesome appon this phone)?
Let me know, i'm going to do this today
Best,
I have a lot of the same questions for this phone. I really think the only option worth using will be CM9 if and when there is an official build for the HOS. Totally agree with the camera app. The thing that makes me nervous with CM9 is losing the excellent camera functionality. Its for that reason that I'm still stock and waiting. The VOIP popping sound is annoying, although I'm glad I'm not the only one with the issue. I just want to go back to a clean AOSP based ROM, but from what I've seen there really isnt a good option unless you want to try an Alpha of CM9.
i love the stock HTC one S its brill.

1) I would not recommend any of them until there are stable releases available. If I were going to install any of them, I'd choose CM9.
2) List of non-working features are listed in the OP of the CM9 thread. Not sure if the popping sound has been fixed in AOSP.
3) Pretty sure you would use the same method as any other ROM... RUU, relock bottloader, etc.
4) No idea, but would I would be surprised if the stock camera app could not be loaded onto AOSP.

I've read so many times that extracting the stock Sense camera app is going to be a nightmare since it's so deeply rooted into the whole of Sense. So most likely, it's going to be a trade-off situation.
The Ville has official AOKP so that would be your best bet.
I agree with you. I have always disliked Sense since HTC first released it.
1) All are pretty close to stock ICS. CM9 is probably the closest. I prefer AOKP as it has more tweaks, IMO.
2) Wifi calling as of right now is a no-go. I don't know if someone is working on it, and I don't care as I do not use it. One gripe of switching to AOSP is the camera, more info below.
3) In a custom recovery, make a backup of your stock ROM (sense). If you **** anything up you can always go back to exactly what you had when you made the backup.
4) AOSP camera is **** compared to Sense. No burst shot, shutter has lag, video barely works, and no panorama. There is no HDR mode as well, which I really like on the stock. The camera is the BIGGEST turn down when switching to Sense. It is why I am still on Sense.
CSP, what Aokp rom are you talking about? Pm me a link or something. Want to look into it.

Please stop with the bull****!
CM9 is very stable on the One S. Great battery life and smooth. Camera and camcorder working great and even takes pics while filming.(idk wtf guy above is saying about camera)
AOKP is basically CM9 but with more tweaks and at the moment not as stable as CM due to a few bugs but overall good enough for daily driver.
Every AOSP custom rom is basically CM9 so if you want stock like the OP says about his Nexus S...CM9 only way to go!

+1. Im on T-Mobile, loved the specs on the HOS even over the SGSIII. Disliked Sense but disliked touchwiz even more. Decided to go with the best house in a bad neighborhood in terms of bloated android overlays. I honestly do not see why manufacturers feel the need to "improve" upon Android. Its perfect in its unadulterated state. One man's opinion of course. The HOS would absolutely fly on 4.1 with no extra BS on top of it.
My Experience
I have owned Htc devices since the G1 I got the 1S for my girl when the upgrade was available I had to send the 1S back for replacement due to data issues (T-mobile) They sent me another one with an older baseband hell I rooted it put a stock sense Rom on it and told the girl here you go it works great and is fast camera is awesome I replaced my Sensation with the play store Gnex all I can say is HOLY **** what a piece this is IMHO it blows away any of the devices I have previosly owned including the 1S my girl has now plus I don't need to wait on HTC or T-mobile to provide an outdated update for the device I currently am running JB V.1 pre release and its badd azz I run aokp aosp both and they just fly I think the camera is fine and getting updates from google is much better than going thru the carriers at 349.95 right now thats a deal ----so long sense/Htc I had all the fun I could stand

[Q] Camera pictures quality in AOSP ROMs

I have flashed some AOSP ROMs like CM and Kang and the although the camera works the quality of pictures especially in low light is terrible.
I have tested a couple of times taking pictures with CM and then the same picture with stock Sense. The ASOP pictures come out with a greenish hue.
This leads to my question, is this something the Devs can improve with time or is this a trade-off of not using a ROM based on the Sense framework?

It can be improved, but there are much more important things to do/fix as of now. And it may require a lot of work. It is at the bottom of a lot of developer's lists.
yeah I totally respect the Devs work and for the most part just wondered if it was technically possible.
thanks for the answer.
Will wait patiently..lol
Same I am very thankful to the Dev's.
Curiously though, so it seems that my best bet is to root my phone but to keep the stock ICS android on it becuase otherwise I lose sense4 and the supposedly better camera software htc preinstalled on it?
Thanks so much! cheers.

If you like sense, then stick with the Sense-based ROMs. As for the camera, the hardware is still fully capable of taking the same quality pictures whether you are using AOSP or Sense ROMs.
The camera software is different in AOSP and may not have all of the features included in Sense (yet) and the picture quality might be a little worse off in AOSP, but the AOSP ROMs are still in alpha. The developers are working hard to create a stable, fully functional AOSP ROM... it's just going to take a little time. It doesn't hurt to try the AOSP roms out and see for yourself, just don't expect everything to be working flawlessly.

Compare Sense to AOSP Camera Performance

For those who have recently switched from Sense to AOSP (CM10 esp)
can you answer these questions and or post examples
How is the photo quality itself between them?
How is the speed of launching the camera?
How is the speed of the photo taking itself?
How is the close-up photo performance?
Thanks!
I am strict AOSP kinda guy but bought this phone because i loved the hardware. I am now on trickdroid but dreaming of AOSP. I take lots of photos and really leverage the amazing camera on this phone. I can only really switch to AOSP if the camera performance is at least comparable.
Looking forward to the responses, thanks!
All of the items you mentioned are worse in CM. If you ran CM on a previous phone, the camera performance is roughly similar. It is the one and only trade off to dumping Sense, but I feel it's worth it.
I was wondering this..

I'd personally stick with Sense if the camera is an issue for you. The AOSP camera application is no comparison to the Sense camera app. That, and no WiFi Calling are the only reasons I'm on Trickdroid and not CM10.

I agree, this is the main reason I stuck with sense for so long, but I finally switched over to CM.
Max camera resolution is only 5mp, not 8. Camera speed is fast, but not as fast as sense. You can still take pictures during a video, which is nice. But I HATE the AOSP camera. It is ugly, and 1/4 the screen is taken up by a grey box for (apparently) no reason other than to house the shutter button and options. Sense had a great approach by making the camera full screen and only having the buttons without any unnecessary space taken up.
One option would be to try out the MIUI Sense base. Personally I'm not big on MIUI, but it has the sense camera so maybe you'd be interested.
AOSP camera resolution is standard size, so smaller than phone screen, so it couldn't be displayed full screen anyways.

Will never happen.
This is really depressing. I was offered a great deal on these phones and read a little about them and how great the dual core and camera and things were and seen a boatload of development going on here so I jumped on the deal. Now as I am waiting for my One S phones to arrive I am doing a lot of research and all I am reading is major disappointments lol. I thought for sure I would be able to flash AOKP and get rid of sense and all would be fine but then that takes away the best part of this phone. I should have learned my lesson after the Motorola Milestone XT720. What I have learned about phones with locked bootloaders is that the dev's work extra hard and there is always hope on a complete fantastic ROM but the truth of it is it never happens, out of the few years at the XT720 forum there is still not one fully functional, complete ROM, and people are still left hoping. It is really depressing lol. I have a Galaxy Nexus now so I assume my HTC One S with AOKP will be just like the GNex camera and all huh? I suppose after having my GNex I will not like anything to do with Sense and I would hate to flash an AOSP ROM and ruin the camera.

The camera has nothing to do with the locked bootloader. This phone is as good as any top of the line phone available right now and there are many 100% functional ROMs and kernels to choose from. You can flash the Venom ROM and remove nearly all appearance of Sense while keeping the camera. The AOSP camera is perfectly adequate for most needs, it's just not as fast as the stock.

[Q] sense camera app in 4.2 roms?

I really want to switch to a 4.2.2 rom for the HOX, but two things have been holding me back:
* CM 10.1 (The one I am considering the most) is still unstable and seems to be at a standstill (though it's looking bright).
* The Sense Camera is not included in any 4.2 ROM (as far as I know)
The main feature I would miss is the slow motion recording. As far as I know there are no other (good) apps that can do this. The best I've seen was 'pseudo-slow-motion" where it looked like more frames were interpolated.
Other great features include fast continuous shooting, and taking pictures during videos (I have not looked into other apps for these features).
My questions are:
Is there any way to get the Sense Camera into a 4.2 Rom?
If not, are there any alternatives for the features I'm looking for (apps, different roms, etc)?
And any other advice you wish to give me!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
My info if it helps: ATT HTC One X, Rooted, S-Off, Boot-loader Unlocked, CleanROM R2
And a side question (not a high priority): CleanROM is great, but I seem to be missing any HDMI out features, does that happen for anyone else?

This is absolutely wonderful! Thanks for the link!
Ease of use and (from what I can tell) picture quality is superior to the HOX camera app
However, it's missing the key features I want, slow motion video, and fast continuous shooting. Maybe I couldn't find these features, but they aren't in this app. I couldn't find any continuous shooting feature in fact, but I could be wrong. That's a big issue right there. I got used to being able to take up to 20 high speed shots just by holding down the shutter button. I wouldn't mind having a to change a setting every time though, but I can't find that setting if it exists.
Follow up questions:
Are there any modifications I could do to this app?
Am I just being plain dumb and can't find the continuous shooting?
Is there any way to extract the HOX camera app like this team did for the JB 4.2 camera?
Well I use viperxl Rom which is soo good and has that feature you looking for. With viperxl it is sense based but customiZation options are huge and dev is active daily. I think its up to 12 k posts . They are the best

No, there is no practical way to get the Sense camera on an AOSP ROM. The Sense camera app leverages usage of various Sense frameworks and some proprietary drivers for ImageChip, all of which are not present on any AOSP ROM.
If you really want the camera, you'll need to switch to a Sense ROM. I recommend ViperXL JB for now. I'm personally waiting for a Sense 5 ROM to come out before I switch back from LiquidSmooth.
