I went and a tf700 instead of the a700 and just wanted to know how are he'd games working for you on this tab. Games from tegrazone like dead trigger, sonic, max Payne, shadow gun, gta3, riptide, cod boz... Just to name a few. Some people with the tf700 including myself are having issues running some of these games and I was just wondering what your experiences were? We were thinking it might have something to do with the fhd screen.

Everything I tested from the Tegra Zone works great here.
I've just tested Dead Trigger and it runs really smooth.
Did u play the second level with the stack of money on the map

You mean the daily reward level? Runs perfect!
I'm in Hong Kong.
When I play dead trigger in HK Rom... It only get around 10FPS at Ultra High Setting.
After I flashed to FR Rom(ver. AV043_A700_1.060.00) It get around 20~22 FPS at Ultra High Setting.
So it still lag. No matter in Ultra High, High and medium it also less than 30FPS. only can get smooth in Low.
My Motorola RAZR can get smooth on High, medium and Low setting...
I feel disappointed on the Acer official rom performance...
How can you display the frame rate? I didn't find any option in Dead Trigger. But it is running fine on my tab.
I just use my GPS gaming experience to guest the about frame rate.
If A700 play dead trigger at ultra high, it can't as smooth as tf700 and HTC one x.
It's out!

Good-bye Real Racing 3, maybe? We'll see
It's downloading to my Xperia Play as we speak, check this place for updates.
UPDATE: So, the game is XPO and shows in the launcher.
I have a mixed feeling about the performance though. You can pick one of the three settings : BEST VISUALS/BEST PERFORMANCE/OPTIMAL. The game defaulted to OPTIMAL but I was shocked how bad the frame rate was, so I changed to BEST PERFORMANCE but it's still not very good. But I am on stock ROM with no overclock so... They are trying to force this horrible free to play model down you throat, always bugging you to spend that precious green currency to upgrade you car and stuff like that .
As for visuals and the 'driving feel', Real Racing 3 is still the king, even without support for XP controls.
This game is not bad, but doesn't seem so addictive that I'd be investing countless hours into it like I've been with RR3.
Also, music is horrible but that's something I've got used to with Gameloft.
I'd recommend this game only if your device can play it fluently, as mine can't.
It looks so nice
Im actually playing Real Racing 3 so i'll try that alternative
It also have low framerate on ICS rom, even on perfomance settings (on stock speed, i didn't test it with overclock).
But it's XPO, touchpads also work. Not so memory-hungry as real racing 3, so it should work on heavy ics/jb roms.

Where is the settings for graphics? I'm on GB (Gin2Kittkat) and there is nothing to set, so the framerate is terrible even with OC to 1,4GHz (my XP can't get higher cause freezing). I downloaded this game yesterday, must set controls to wheel+pedals (XP controller didn't show up) otherwise there was damn auto accel. It looks funny but unplayable on Xperia Play.
Using RAM Manager Pro at Hard Gaming somehow helps with the framerates. Running debloated Gin2JB v2.5.2, stock kernel.
Frame rate is atrocious on this game when other cars are on the screen, even on best performance.
I'll try it at 2.3ghz later when I reinstall extreme kernel! It runs smooth on max settings on my jxd so it cant be massively demanding!

Indeed. When on the lead, meaning no other cars on the screen, it runs fine. Also, lags are noticeable in areas where there are many buildings.
Dang, what's the point in making it XP controls-optimized but not ancient-chip-optimized? Oh, GL...

You can choose Best perfomance or Best graphics.. just that
I set the game on Best Perfomance on Gin2KitKat (1.2Ghz OC) and its unplayable!
Anyone notice that some graphic intensive games stutter? I'm not talking about framerate. This also happens on my Z2 tablet.
Running the games side by side my LG G2, The G2 is noticeably smoother. Running benchmarks side by side, The G2 is smoother again, but The Z3 scores higher.
Current games I'm playing are:
Riptide GP 2
Dead trigger 2
Slingshot Braves
Update 07/09/2016: I'm now using a Z5 and experiencing the same. My old LG G2 is smoother.

I havnt had any prolems so far. Ive play asphault 8, modern combat and GTA pretty flawlessly. Are you using heavy launchers? I also use a taskmanager to close everything prior to gaming. (ive done this with all my devices not just my z3)
I'm using the default launcher.
I'll Try Asphalt 8 later today.
Thanks.

Must say I have not noticed stuttering like you mention, I will also try Asphalt 8 and see how it fairs.
My bench marks 3d is smooth, and my device on Antutu tops the 3d default scores.
I have though made a couple of tweaks.
Here they are and see if it helps;
Go to settings, click about phone 10 times (or until you become a developer)
Go into developer options
Go down to Hardware-Accelerated rendering
Tick force GPU rendering
And Disable HW overlays.
See how you go after that.

Force GPU rendering and Disabling HW overlays did not make a difference.
I just tried Asphalt 8 on my Z3, Z2 tablet, and my fiance's Z3 compact, and it stutters like crazy. Much more than Riptide GP 2. Don't get me wrong, the games are playable, but much more enjoyable on my older LG G2.

It could be heat or game related, My LG G2 never stuttered either and the Z3 for me has stuttered only in PlayStore of all places but a restart fixed that.
Hey mate i have been scouring the net for an answer to exactly the same problem you are having. Virtually every game has some intermittent stuttering which is pretty consistently occuring every few seconds so as you say games are very playable but dont feel smooth.
I have tried asphalt 8, zen pinball, Pinball Arcade , real racing 3 and none feel completely smooth. I thought maybe that real racing 3 may have been too graphically intense for the z3 but after reading so many reports from other z3 users on how good the game played on their phones it made me start looking for a solution. Pinball arcade and zen really sealed the deal for me about maybe something wasnt quite right though as these 2 games should pose absolutely no problem for any modern device (my vita vetsion side by side looks much smoother) but the ball will stutter every so often too.
If you find a solution i would really like to know what you did as i am new to android and everything ive read to try hasnt helped.

Possibly it's related to the resolution. The Z3 has 1080 x 1920, whereas the ps vita is only 960 × 544; around a quarter of the size. I do think it's a weakness of modern phones; I'd be a lot happier with a lower resolution. It's not as if the S3 had any problems with its 720 x 1280. I think it's a bit like the megapixel race on DSLRs; bigger is better, and damn the other problems (noise, image size on cameras; speed, battery, asset storage space on phones).
Doesn't seem to be related to resolution, as the same happens on my fiancé's Z3 compact. Also, the same games runs smooth on my LG G2.
I'm pretty sure it has to do With Sony's ROM since it's happening on my Z3, Z2 tablet, and Z3 compact. The people that report no stuttering is probably not as sensitive to it as some of us are.

I think the Sony ROM is running a more conservative setting or something because everything seems to be a little slow on the Z3. Battery saving method on Sony's part I assume.
Probably the kernel tuning. I've noticed it too.
Maybe Sony is more aggressive than LG with the thermal protection in the kernel. Even on the LG G2 if you disabled thermal protection it got rid of any stutters that were there, though not safe in the long run.
Guys do you think they will solve it by android L relase?
It will probably improve a bit because the new OS will be more efficient, and also better battery life.

Feel free to chuck up a video of the problem; I'm writing a game, so perhaps I could reproduce it if I had some idea what's causing it.
I remember having this problem with my Droid DNA when the Moto X rocking the same processor was smooth, regardless of framerate. Definitely firmware/video driver/kernel related. It can be most easily witnessed in games with a lot of scrolling or fluid motion, looking like a hitch or frame drop.

Ahh yes, i play asphalt 8 quite a bit, and while it doesn't lag, it definitely stutters a ton. I'm coming from an ascend mate 2 and even that runs it a bit better! i'm sure it all comes down to the heat/kernel settings. what's odd is when im playing need for speed, it's extremely smooth, but the phone definitely gets way hotter than it does when i play asphalt 8.
Sorry for the delay. My Canon camera crapped out on me. I ended up having to use my GoPro Hero3. Sorry for the image quality, GoPro sucks bad on everything except outdoor activities.
Top is LG G2 and bottom is Z3.
Edit: Youtube is horrible. I suggest downloading via Dropbox link.

In the LG G2 you could disable the Thermal throttling and manually set clock speed for thermal states in Trickster Kernel settings app. I suppose you could do the same here.
So I have been playing around with my new 4.7 and immediately noticed that, in comparison to my Samsung S3, slow scrolling with the
thumb on the display causes jerky movement, like a couple of pixels at the time. This looks horrible in comparison to the S3 where every
motion seems perfectly fluid. Has anyone else noticed this and why isn't it implemented the right way? Seems to be an easy fix.
Does the 5.5 suffer from this issue as well?
Note: It's not lag. It's like there aren't enough frames for it to look smooth. This happens during scrolling in webpages and settings etc.
It seems they totally turned off this little project from back in the day:
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/G/google_project_butter.html
"Google Project Butter accomplished its “buttery smooth” responsiveness and “speed infusion” improvements via three main additions: triple buffering, which improves coordination and animation synchronization between the CPU, GPU and display; VSync, which improves graphical performance and increases frame rates to 60fps (frames per second); and touch responsiveness, which predicts a user’s upcoming actions of the screen in order to improve load times for those actions.:
No one willing to test?
Okay :good:
Mine does the same (4.7). But is not something that bother me. It is a cheap device after all.

Thanks for your input. Whether or not the device is relatively 'cheap' shouldn't really matter, as it's a matter of frame rate and could
be easily tweaked through a software change.
Any input from 5.5 owners?
Hello everybody
I recently picked up new shield tablet k1 and played with it a bit until i noticed something strange i didnt experience with my other tablets - banding. Everything looks OK if you browse photos, websites etc, but any 3D game shows horrible banding in place of gradients. Im running stock kernel with OTA 1.2, no idea if it happened with 1.1 because i updated right away after first booting my tablet. Also checked every possible colour settings, force gpu rendering, wipe erase data and reinstalling it all also makes no difference.
It doesnt look like screen issue because gradients on lcd test websites look great. I'll pick some screenshots later when im back home to show my issue, just wondering if anybody else had the same problem and any tips are very welcome.
Could you give us some examples of games that show this problem? I personally haven't ever noticed this, but I'll try some new games (to me anyway) and let you know if I have the same thing.

It happens for example in Simcity Buildit, where its most noticeable on loading screens, but with closer look also on gui elements. Also in games like Rayman Adventures, Marvel Contest of Champions or Modern Combat
Here's screenshot from Simcity loading screen
Code:

Same here but I only notice it when using full brightness.
I think the developers use only 16 bit graphics. That in combination with the large full hd screen makes that more noticable than on larger screens.

This makes no sense as those games are supposed to be optimized for shield, developers would have to forcre 16 bit rendering for Tegra exclusively. Those games look better on much weaker devices.
Hi, I have also this problem playing Minecraft, Geometry Dash and the same Rayman Adventures. I thought it could resolve with a wipe but nothing. Strangest thing I noted is that is a software problem, since you can see those bands also in a screenshot or in a screen cast.
Probably we have to report to nvidia as an issue of the last ota
Did you contacted them?
I didn't contact them yet because im trying to gather more information, at first i thought its issue with my device but it seems this affects more tablets.
I did some tests. Seems like grey scales are more affected, but also other colours have this banding. I tried the same tests on Motorola Moto E and LG G3 and there aren't band. But doing a screenshot i can see the band in other phones too.
I don't know if this happens also on other firmware version or on custom ROMs.
I tested this with stock Android 5.1.1 and there was the same issue, so it's not ROM specific. Also worth noticing is the fact that all gradients look very good on images or websites. I'll try to test this with GLTools faking GPU info, the same trick allows Tegra to run properly XCOM: Enemy Within without graphical glitches.
If your tab is rooted, can you test if this happen in custom ROM too, or with a custom kernel? Maybe is nvidia fault.
However that is the weirdest. If I remember right, photos and web navigation aren't drawn by GPU, differently from games and particular test images, I don't want to say a stupid thing though.
Since I didn't rooted yet, principally for warranty reason, I have to wait any fixing ota, hoping that it isn't hardware fault
I tested it with GLTools faking GPU info with no positive result, so the last possible test is custom kernel and custom rom.
EDIT
Unofficial Kernel changed nothing. Didn't try with custom ROM yet and at this point i think its pointless. All seem that its Tegra driver behavior and unless it gets updated we have to stick with what we've got.
I believe I have the answer : the precision of the hardware (or firmware) texture interpolators is way lower than on other platforms. Maybe something like fixed point 24.2 instead of 24.8. See for details first result on google (I can't post url...) : "iq hardware interpolation"
I had extreme banding on a bloom FX on HP Slate 7 extreme only (tegra, was working fine on Nexus 5 (adreno gpu) and PC (GTX970)), on a dark orange gradient. I switched to manual interpolation in the shader, and the problem was gone. So I doubt the issue can be fixed with an android update, maybe a driver update, or maybe not at all as it could be hardware design, to improve performance (but at what cost !).
