How do I prepare my phone for roms?

I need to root, unlock, and install CWM right? How exactly do I do this? I tried to locate a how to without any luck.

The dev section is filled with all the info you need to know.
Also, not trying to be a **** but saying you searched when it is obvious that you didn't will get you nowhere.

OK I've read some more and had a couple more questions...
I noticed that the roms I've looked at don't require an unlocked phone. What's the point of unlocking the phone then? Can I just root and install CWM?
Some roms say "needs the 1.85 base." What does this mean and how do I get it before flashing a rom?

Some of the roms, prior to the unlock discovery, were executable as an RUU. All the updated versions require recovery which you need the bootloader unlocked to get in to. It's a painless process and there's even a 1-Click script method for those who dont want to take chances.

Will I be able to get the phone back to COMPLETELY stock should I decide to sell it in the future?

From what I know it will say relocked or tampered but maybe I'm wrong

After unlocking your phone, there will be no way to get back to 100% stock unless we can get S-OFF (which hopefully may be in the near future due to a few devices already being S-OFF).
However, you can root your device and not unlock it (1.82 and prior as of now) and still be able to revert to 100% stock as if it came right out of the box.
Most of the ROMs currently do not require an unlocked bootloader.
However, this will definitely change as we begin to see custom kernels (hopefully soon with the release of the source by HTC Dev) and more complex ROMs (such as those based on AOSP, such as CM9 and AOKP).
So in short, you can still use most of the ROMs in the dev section. Just be aware however that if you do not unlock then you cannot install CWM (limiting the number of ROM options) and also if you update past 1.82.502.3 then you cannot root (at this time, other root exploits are being explored).

Is unlocking your bootloader the same as carrier unlocking your phone?
Does this mean that say, AT&T phones could be used on Tmobile?

Nope. You are thinking of SIM unlock.
Bootloader unlock lets you load custom ROMs and change recovery, that's all.

[Q] Tmo One S (stock) Bootloader tampered

First i apologize if this is was already posted,
I just got the 1.84 ota update installed. And i just want to check the h boot . And its says Tampered and Locked.
My issue is i never unlocked the bootloader or tried to root this phone. Bought phone new from T-mobile.
Is this normal for stock phone to say tampered?
If it is not then i will want to root since its tampered, but is there a way to root for 1.84 .

Go exchange it if you're plan to use stock. If not go root it

You could exchange it, but if you plan to root instead, there's 2 sticky threads in development specifically devoted to rooting and they work for the 1.84 update as well. However, there's also a "one click" rooting option in the One X (AT&T version) development section that was recently updated and MIGHT work on the 1.84 update without having to unlock the bootloader through HTC. The last one click for the AT&T X worked for the S as well before the 1.84 update.

Some clarification on upgrading to 4.0.4 with supercid would be greatly appreciated.

I have a stock, rooted, bootloader locked One X. I want the new update due to all of the speed and bug improvements. However, I don't want to lose root, or the ability to flash roms if I ever wanted to. I also do not wish to void the warranty due to my bad luck with phones in the past. Now two questions:
Can I supercid and get an unlock token without HTC voiding my warranty? Possibly with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732980 ?
Second, would that token be valid after RUU'ing to the 2.20 update if I ever chose to void my warranty and unlock the bootloader?
I would like to thank anyone who replies for their time, and although I have researched quite a bit, I would like to clarify with everyone before taking the plunge.

You're going to void the warranty if you unlock the bootloader. Their is no way around that, well except for sometimes you can relock the boot loader then they would still service it. Kinda like jail breaking and unjailbreaking iPhone except its harder

This is more about keeping my options open. I'm not planning on unlocking the bootloader unless I have to. I'm just trying to retain the method of doing so if I ever wanted/needed to while enjoying the latest update. Sorry for not stating my intentions clearly.

Ok 1. If you have supercid you already have altered your stock settings. So even if you use a spoof cid method if you ever have to return it guess what... you have to enter your information lol. Unless you change it back to your original super cid before hand HTC could in theory void your warranty. RUUing does not remove supercid it must be changed back manually. In all reality they have to "legally" tell you that they "can" void your warranty. I havent seen them void a warranty just because one had an unlocked bootloader. As long as the phone can be recovered by them you should be ok.
The screen on my first HOX got cracked, I re-locked the bootloader and RUU'd back to stock ROM ( left supercid on it) filed my claim with asurion Got a replacement next day, sent old one back no issues. Remember when you re lock that is displayed you cant change it to say locked as we dont have s-off. However I tracked my old phones return HTC recieved it back roughly 4 days after I mailed it off and asurion did their thing. It has been over a month now and havent heard anything about them not honoring the return. See people dont understand that even if you have insurance, warranty etc HTC can at anytime still according to their legal statements not honor a returned phone or etc. So if HTC doesn't honor it asurion will be adding a hefty fee to the next months bill lol. But like I said before as long as they can recover it I havent heard of anyone having warranty, insurance issues.
2. Yes once you get your unlock token with supercid it is valid no matter what firmware you use. However you must always keep the supercid after unlocking because if you change back to your original CID the unlock token you received wit supercid will fail to flash!
3. My suggestion. Follow threads here to get supercid, Unlock your bootloader, then update, re unlock, flash super user.

U do or do not have superuser permission? U can get your unlockbincode from HTC. They have a disclaimer when doing this. "May void your warranty" it says. However ONLY if u have done this before update, u should be able to unlock after update. So Unlock bootloader from htc before upgrade, then use unlockbincode, root after. NO GUARANTEE ON WARRANTY regardless.

I DO have superuser permission. If I were to use the unlock method that does not involve htcdev, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1732980 , they wouldn't have any idea and if I never unlocked then they would have no way of knowing I had an unlock code. This is just in case I decide to unlock later after the update.

but they would unless you manually went back in and removed supercid. This method will give you supercid which would then tell HTC you altered your phone lol.

So the modified supercid file will stick even after a full RUU? This is why I'm checking with you guys because I've heard otherwise so it's hard to tell what's right.

yes once you have supercid the "current" firmware builds do not overwrite it. They may later release a build that does but 2.20 does not.

So because supercid sticks after the update, and because I would need bootloader unlock to modify it to stock, my whole evil plan has been foiled then. Darn... And you're saying bootloader unlock would probably only cause issues on a software related warranty return?

Not necessarily. You can always relock and RUU back to stock, and as long as they can "recover" the phone they shouldn't have a problem with it. Even if the HOX gets official bootloader unlock support from HTC they still give this warning. Right now there is no official bootloader unlock support. All the exploits to unlock the bootloader are just that an exploit hack lol. We arent suppose to be able to unlock them right now. However thats ATT's fault not HTC's. I guess its a 50/50 deal if you get someone who wants to be a prick that day if you have to return it then probably voided warranty. If you get someone cool probably ok. Its hard to say as I havent seen them void a warranty just for a unlocked bootloader. But now if you have unlocked then screw the phone up so bad they cant even fix it thats a different story lol.

I used to have a captivate before this phone and I'm used to flashing one ROM after another. You telling me to just unlock my One X is like telling a former heroine addict to shoot some up for their birthday. You're not making this easy for me lol.

[Q] Questions about root and Bootloader

Hi guys...
so, i bought a Razr HD XT925 and it still didnt arrive, but till it happens i want to be ready to root the phone, so i can install titanium backup and erase some **** that will come like some google apps.
i've read some threads about rooting the phone and i realized that a lot of people talk about this "bootloader"
i had a galaxy s2 and i've never had to worry about this, but in the root threads of Razr HD i see people arguing about it...
i dont know if the phone will arrive with the last update(4.1.2), probably will cause its a long time this update has been out...so i have the following questions:
1) If the phone comes with whether 4.0.4 ICS or 4.1.2 JB, do i need to do something about Bootloader beore rooting it? if yes, what?
2) what's the best way to root? any link for a good thread?
i just dont want to get the phone and in the first day screw him up...
that's why i need to ask this.

When I bought my phone, it was on JellyBean. I used the Motorola instructions to unlock the bootloader (It seems to work in all Razr HD except the US / Verizon ones where you need to have the DEV edition).
Then I flashed recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973904
And then installed SuperSU http://download.chainfire.eu/298/SuperSU/

so after doing these 3 steps, the device got Rooted and working perfectly?
I wonder why is it necessary to unlock this bootloader. why i didnt have to do it in the SGS II? maybe cause Samsung already let it unlocked?
i realized that when i unlock the bootloader i lose the cover by Motorola, so, is it possible to "lock" the bootloader again?

I don't know, every phone has it issues, I remember having to backup the radio and the EFS partition on my Samsung, I didn't have to do any of that on my motorola and with my LG was as easy as installing a script.

With locked bootloader you can't install custom ROMs and you will lose root if you OTA update your device (have in mind that there is currently there is no way to root KK in this device).

so, basically, it isnt necessary to unlock the bootloader to root the phone?
i really dont want to flash custom roms. not right now. i just want to root the phone so i can use Titanium Backup to uninstall some apps that i don't use, which will just waste my memory and battery!
edit: i just read that there are 2 programs. this motochopper and one called motopocalypse.
the motochopper is to root the phone and the other one is to unlock bootloader. and you can't unlock bootloader if your device isnt rooted.
so i can just use the motochopper, root it, and the device will be rooted and still working fine, without bootloader unlocked and i would still have the cover from Motorola? am i correct?

If you upgrade to Kitkat on a phone with a locked bootloader, then you will lose root. No way to carry it over the ota and there is no way to root it once you are on Kit Kat. This must be the 100th time this has been stated.

here in brazil the official KK 4.4.2 is not released yet

Yes, that is correct, take in mind that probably you will still lose cover from Motorola if you root it, but you can unroot before taking your device to Motorola's service if you have any issue...

Stupid me, I didn't read. You have an XT925 so you can "legally" unlock it, no exploit needed like it was with the XT926, so you should still have the ability to sideload root on Kit Kat, like those of us with unlocked XT926s. So, disregard my incoherent ramblings earlier! :silly:

They can tell if you rooted it or not. When you start to boot up into stock recovery, you'll see a QE code on the Andy screen. A qe code of 0/0 means it's not rooted and it's never been rooted.
1/1 means it's currently rooted and it's been rooted before.
0/1 means it's currently not rooted but it's been rooted before.
At least, that's what has been guessed as to what the values mean, but definitely, if it's 0/0, then the phone has never been rooted before. Any values other than 0 to the left or right of the slash means the phone has been rooted before, which means you're warranty is voided.
So, they can tell when you've rooted it. And there's no known way of clearing those values out.
In any case, if you're going to root, you might as well unlock it as well because they can determine if it's been rooted anyways, which will void your warranty.

Forgive me if im asking something already answered. If you have a locked bootloader and on KitKat, is it possible to flash with sbf to an earlier software version, root, then just dont update? Or if the bootloader is locked does this mean that you cant flash anything at all? I only need root, probably like everyone else on KitKat. LoL. Just curious if theres a way to flash to an earlier version. How do you know if your bootloader is locked? Im not familiar with this version.

Once on KitKat, you are stuck. You cannot revert back to a previous version (you WILL brick your phone).
A little research goes a long way. This has been discussed to death since KitKat came out.

Thanks for the explanation, unfortunately "Reasearching" this is not possible when Tapatalk has a "Noted & Known issue" with its search function. Their support team is working diligently for a resolution. Maybe you didn't see my sig line indicating I was utilizing Tapatalk.

That's been going on since ICS, I believe. So, it's nothing new. I remember when the news came out about it a few years ago. I've seen it on my Droid X2, Droid RAZR MAXX and now on my RAZR HD.
I don't know if it's only on Motorola phones or all android phones. All my Android phones have been Motorola with the exception of my first Android phone, which was an LG Vortex.

I've heard about it on some Samsung phones, and they go even farther and track how many times someone has flashed roms and such...Chainfire has some tools just for them. Look up Triangle Away.

yep, i had a Galaxy S2(which i dont have anymore cause i've been stolen), and in my first day with it, i rooted, flashed a custom rom, and then some months after, the usb connector stopped working properly. and the phone still had smth like 4 months of warranty...
i had to do a lot of things to reset it.
flash stock firmware with odin, then use this triangle away, then unroot, etc etc etc...well at least i could reset it and send to warranty without they knowing it

Buying Verizon Pixel, have some questions

Hello guys.
I'm going to buy used and bootloader unlocked Verizon Pixel tomorrow and I'm interested in couple of things:
1. Can I flash all the ROMs that are available for Pixel on Verizon version too?
2. Can I properly install TWRP, root using Magisk, etc?
3. Can I properly flash (and downgrade if needed) official system images (and are they ever available for Verizon models?)
4. Can I take part in Android Beta program?
5. Is there anything I should be afraid of?

Make sure it is bootloader unlocked, and not just SIM unlocked. There are not many VZ ones around that are bootloader unlocked. You need that to do the items on you list.

As I already stated, bootloader is already unlocked.

No one has an answer?

If it's bootloader u locked then yeah u can do all those things. Just do not ever for any reason ever relock the bootloader. Also I believe there have been a few cases where ppl have had semibricks or other issues which required locked stock to fix or somehow resulted in locked stock

I got a replacement about a month ago on my small Pixel and that one was unlocked. However, the one I got from Verizon in store did not have an unlocked bootloader. I'm not sure what the deal is, but maybe getting a replacement from an "accidental" break might do the trick. just to clarify, my first Pixels' usb port got completely fried and started to smell bad whenever it charged, and the phone would get really hot. I am now on 8.1 with an unlocked bootloader but have yet to actually root the phone
