[Q] Tmo One S (stock) Bootloader tampered - HTC One S

First i apologize if this is was already posted,
I just got the 1.84 ota update installed. And i just want to check the h boot . And its says Tampered and Locked.
My issue is i never unlocked the bootloader or tried to root this phone. Bought phone new from T-mobile.
Is this normal for stock phone to say tampered?
If it is not then i will want to root since its tampered, but is there a way to root for 1.84 .

Go exchange it if you're plan to use stock. If not go root it
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2

You could exchange it, but if you plan to root instead, there's 2 sticky threads in development specifically devoted to rooting and they work for the 1.84 update as well. However, there's also a "one click" rooting option in the One X (AT&T version) development section that was recently updated and MIGHT work on the 1.84 update without having to unlock the bootloader through HTC. The last one click for the AT&T X worked for the S as well before the 1.84 update.

Thanks ,
Last thing is it normal to see tampered on a completely stock device thats never been rooted

Absolutely not.

Mine was listed as "tampered". I didn't think much of it as I was planning on unlocking/rooting anyway.

[Q] will I be able to get OTA updates if phone is unlocked ?

If I unlock my sensation and use it on a non t Mobile network, will I be able to get the OTA update htc is pushing out in august to unlock the bootloader?
Yes you will still be able to. If your phone is branded to t-mobile it the update might take a bit longer as T-Mobile need to approve the update.

If you flashed cwm recovery, you are unable to update by ota.And i think,if you have unlocked your phone, why not use custom roms, they are much better than official roms.If you use custom roms, ota is not necessary at all.
I thought you can't flash custom roms with a locked bootloader?
i think he is talking about sim unlocking?

Yes, sorry should have clarified , I meant sim unlock.
My SIM unlocked Bell unit (on Rogers) received the OTA update last week no problem!

[Q] Updation of Unlocked AT&T HOX...is it possible to update. If so, How??

I have a unlocked At&T HOX ...i think it is network unlocked...I did it by entering a code and the phone is working fine here in India with other networks..
My Android version is 4.0.3 and software is 1.85
I came to know that there is a update for HOX with 4.0.4 and i think 2.22...
My question is..as i unlocked it...If I update my mobile to this new version..does it get blocked\bricked....what are the safety measures to be taken..please explain...
I am scared to do as I don't have good enough knowledge...
Also, if the update is succesful am i supposed to unlock it again...if so, will the existing unlock code work??
Please someone guide me...
many thanks in advance...
You should unlock your bootloader first. It sounds like you are just sim unlocked. You also won't get an OTA if you are using a different carrier so you would need to run the RUU. I have never sim unlocked a phone before, but I would guess you might have to reenter your sim unlock code again.
I mainly took the 2.20 RUU for running on AT&T network, which I think was an improvement over 1.85. Since you are not on AT&T I would recommend unlocking your bootloader, and flashing a radio that's best suited for your carrier. If you take the 2.20 RUU you won't be able to flash radios anymore.

Are you currently rooted? I would unlock your bootloader and do SuperCID before doing any updates. That way you can always root your phone.

I wouldn't recommend 2.20. Once you run the 2.20 you have to flash the boot.img for any ROM manually (so you can't use restore a backup on the go without a computer) and you can't flash radios at all. Being that he is using this phone internationally, being able to flash radios may be pretty important.

what i said.
not being able to flash boot.img in recovery is the most annoying aspect of flashing the 2.20 ruu when you are already bootloader unlocked.

No I didn't root it...I got the phone and unlock code (Seller sent both to me)...once i got it just inserted other carrier sim and unlocked the phone...apart from this I didn't do anything...it is as it is...As another friend mentioned, I think I did SIM\Network Unlock...

I don't really know what to tell you. You should do some more research first. We told you already what you "should" do.
root, unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash custom rom, if you have trouble with network try different radios. do not take an ota or ruu, i am sure you will regret it.

Update + Root without unlocking bootloader.

I have a rogers one x, running 4.0.3 / 1.94.631.3.
I'd like to update to the newer software version so I can have the official version of the 3 dot mod (using the tast button as a menu/task button).
I'd also like to be rooted again.
I really dont want to unlock my bootloader yet though, is there a way to update my phone without having to unlock my bootloader>?

You can't root these phones without unlocking the bootloader. If you're already rooted, you're already unlocked. Just flash a 4.0.4 rooted stock rom.
Edit: This applies to 2.20 only. If for some reason you're still on a 1.xx firmware, you may not need to unlock.
Technically not true...
Earlier versions of the firmware 1.7 - 1.85 you could root without unlocking keeping the phone true to stock but with root. In the bootloader you get just the tampered flag but still locked.
You might able to keep root with root ota keeper from play store or if you have the pro version of supersu there's an option for it try keep root but I don't think these are 100% guaranteed to work.

You're right; it's been so long I forgot about that. We actually got root on 1.73 first, then unlock about two weeks later.

I'm worried that unlocking my bootloader will instantly void my warranty.
But i would love to play with custom roms and have up to date software.
I'm assuming there will most likely never be a way to restore the bootloader flags, so it looks like it has never been unlocked.

Root/boot loader unlock doesn't necessarily mean you warranty is void. If you have a hardware issue the carrier will usually give you a replacement
The only way we could restore the flags is by getting s-off and that doesn't look to promising at this point

I'm on Rogers and my phone has been rooted and the bootloader unlocked since the day I got it.
I did have to send my phone in for a warranty repair for the volume buttons. I left the custom rom I was running at the time on the phone.
Rogers replaced my phone as they could not repair my first one. So I don't think you have to worry to much about it if it is a hardware issue.

Good to know. That was my biggest concern.
I'll most likely be doing a 'one-time-swap' through rogers since my phone has the worst bluetooth ever, then ill start the root/unlock after.
Thanks for the help. :good:

Also, do not take for granted that the process for rooting/S-off/modding your old HTC is similar in any way to the One X. HTC is constantly upgrading its security lockdowns, and folks are constantly coming on here and complaining "this is so much harder than my old phone, etc." You are simply better off resolving that this is a brand new phone, with new rules. So treat it as such, and read and research as much as you can about the One X before you begin to mod it.
As far as Subsidy unlock (SIM unlock), it is not related to SuperCID, and has not been achieved yet by hack/mod methods. But it might come soon, since S-off was just achieved.
Until that happens, you will need to use the more "official" method of getting the SIM unlock code that corresponds to your IMEI. AT&T will typically not supply the SIM unlock code, is you are not a current post-paid account holder. So you might be forced to use a 3rd party vendor to get a paid unlock code (of can your friend get it for you?). Keep in mind that as of Jan. 26, 2013, that is no longer legal in the US for any phones purchased after that date to be unlocked by anyone but your carrier. But since you purchased the phone from a friend, you may be exempt from the law, if the phone was originally purchased from AT&T before Jan. 26.
I purchased my unlock code here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unlock-Code...585?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3380245811 before it was illegal.
Worked perfectly.
Thanks for all the info, yeah he bought it last year so i think im exempt from the new law"hopefully" thanks for the links also!!!

I have a question (might be stupid). I bought my HOX factory unlocked, or so it said the person I bought it from, but it came with the at&t brand, is there a chance that the phone would lock itself if I root it, do an s-off, etc?
By the way, the phone was actually unlocked, though I don't know if he purchased a code or bought it factory unlocked.

The only way it will lock it self is if you or him reports it as stolen or lost

[Q] silly question, but if my bootloader says tampered and locked...

Before anyone sets the hounds on me, I ask this question with a massive grain of salt. I had to send my original HOXL back to ATT (warranty) and my new one is on JB. I'm assuming that they reset the CID and relocked the BL when they installed JB on this unit and then packaged it to be sent out as a refurb.
Since it is tampered and locked, would the only way to unlock this be to go on a wild goose hunt and find the person that owned this device last and get the unlock code bin file from them?
I would try to go onto HTCdev and type in my token identifier but I have the feeling that ATT would have reset the CID when they reflashed their official JB.
Thoughts? Should I give up hope? lol

If you can somehow get the unlock code bin then you should be OK. However, I doubt you will get that. It is weird that they sent you a phone that was void by warranty though.
Any who, good luck.

well if he had that unlock_code.bin, could he possibly still unlock the bootloader? it was tampered with, so SOMETHING happened
Ya he originally was rooted and unlocked so the tampered will stay there even if you ruu unless you change it with being s off. I'm thinking that if they would of pushed newest update to your phn it would have bricked it. Just check your version and as long as its not the lastest go about unlocking /rooting as you would normally. If its the newest version its write protected so it just won't work, it wouldn't brick phone
