This fall with one older JB ROM ([Rom]Sky-JellyBean GS3-Touchwiz). I realized that my apps move to internal instead to external SD, with regular function "move to SD",
I don't like Apple stile SD limitation, and it is very important for low cost phones, with small internal memory. The answer for "16 GB is not enough ?", is not right answer and it doesn't help, it is subjective point of view.
Does anyone knew which ROM/kernel had this capability, or solution for this problem. Or maybe I'm wrong ...?
Thanks

Aren't they already on the internal sdcard? Are they moving to the internal storage location? I'm on volcom's Super lite rom and do not have that problem..

Sorry it is your case, and I would be fine too, with few apps and almost no app's data, on internal mem. But this i not my case and my question is: options with custom ROM/kernel/solution for moving installed apps to external SD memory in JB ....

My apologies.. My apps were only moving to internal storage, and I had no idea... Didn't know the problem existed to find a fix..
This is the only thing I can find thus far, but it sucks because u apparently have to process one app at a time.. Which would take me weeks..

Thank you for the answer, this is "workaround" for apps data, we need some temporary solution for apps, to be able to move to external SD. I found some solution for other devices with /etc/vold.fstab, but not sure they works with ATT Skyrocket and JB
I agree today 16 GB or more is enough for average user. But for example, it was huge memory, at the time when DOS was first OS for computers, in the past, to work with 64 Kb RAM memory and 50 MB HDD. What we can say toady about it ???
Lucky with old fashion computer, we can always add/change RAM or HDD, but what about phones and tablets, SD card is only available memory to add or upgrade, otherwise we need new more expensive phone/tablet ... We should thing about it ...
Sloved
This problem could be consider closed, because the new new 4.1.2 *unofficial* JellyBean leak for the Skyrocket, really move apps (apk) on external SD Card.
Apps data can be move to external SD Card with this solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8PyqCOpERA (I hope for better solution.

Is there a way similar to how the g1 had the MTD partitions to make the g2x have the full 6gb+ used as the internal storage(compared to the 1.5gb we get normally) Theres got to be a tool or a dev that knows how to hex edit or run some kind of script that can bind the internal/inbuiltsdcard space into just one partition.

uh.... who doesn't like more internal storage for their phones? I already have an external 16gb sdcard so the 5gb is wasted space for me and many others!
So you're saying you want a 100+ apps on your phone so you can come onto XDA and complain how your phone is slow?

Bunch of idiots i swear, don't think either of you are devs for the g2x so GTFO!
It would be cool having that. So much space...
Well it's not as much as i'd prefer in my smartphone(16gb should be the norm in all smartphones by now for internal storage) but 6gb>1.5gb anyday.
Just hoping someone knows how to do this for the people that actually could use more space. I don't care if you think 1gb of storage is enough for you(thats nice now go away) this is a request!

Yes it is, mounted as an internal type sdcard but it's not the same as having just the 6 or 7gb of INTERNAL storage for apps and games. As of right now 1.5 is available and that 5gb you speak of being used as a internal sdcard doesn't matter when that 1.5gb runs out of space
So what happens when the app space is full?

LOL common sense man....
Running out of space means you can't install any more apps/games whatever else to your phone. Sure you can install SOME apps/games to external or internal sdcard but that main 1.5gb of storage is sill gonna run out faster then the 6gb sdcard that is partitioned on our phones.
Why can't people understand what i'm saying? This mod, if possible would only make our phones better by improving internal storage space from 1.5gb to around 7gb or more for any app or game you want to install. Most people prefer using their name brand sdcard for storing music/movies/porn/whatever else and prefer installing all apps to internal partition so everything runs smoother/faster.
Can you partition the internal memory (the 5 gigs to ext3-4)?? There is an app on marker called s2e that uses the partitioned space in a sdcard as app storage, maybe it can see the internal space as a partitioned sd card and move apps there.. just a thought.

Ya i'm aware of that program S2E but it's only available for CM7 and i don't think it's possibl to partition the internal 5gb sdcard builtin the g2x...
Link2sd is the solution until a dev can figure the way to bind 1.5gb internal storage to the internal 5.5 sdcard. Link2sd is incredibly stable and allows moving all user apps to ext partition on external sdcard including dalvik cache and market links.
Also unlike s2e it will work for any rom and not just cm7!
I am running faux nexus aosp 1.3.1 rom with his DS .42 kernel and getting great battery life performance.

Heres proof how great link2sd works, already installed 350+ apps/games to my ext partition on sdcard and the phone is still running buttery smooth and have over 1gb+ left on internal. This would not be possible with just the in built apps2sd feature since that won't allow dalvik cache or some apps or games to install to sdcard.
As you can all see 35 apps on each page for the app drawer times 11 pages so far = 385 & i still go tplenty more to install with no worries of running out of space for a long while. Problem solved , for now lol

Naw it's really simple to use, you just need to partition your sdcard thru cwm. You should def make a nand backup and full wipe(it's not something you can do without being prepared first as partitioning your sdcard wipes all data off of it)
Other then that once you link any apps you want to sd-ext it will ask you to quick reboot so it can mount the partition you made on sdxard for those apps to be seen and used.

Any progress on this yet? I was thinking the same. Wish it was easy to expand the 1.5gb. Since I have 32gb external sd, it's best to have most of internal 8gb for app storage. I hate the constant message of low internal storage when install new app or even just app update. app2sd is ok but not very good.

Hi
I am coming from the Vibrant. There, I never used my own SD CARD. I always used the phone's storage. It was always fine.
But now I just flashed to CM and when I wanted to take a pic, it said "please insert SD card before ...."
huh? does the G2x doesn't have enough space - even for ONE picture?
I am sure I am missing something here
Thank you!!!

Internal memory is 8gb but free space is roughly 5.2 gbs.
You need to have an external SD card with the way cm7 is formatted the internal SD card is mounted as mnt/emmc.
Not sure if you can change your download folder to mnt/emmc as I never have tried.
There is I believe if I recall correctly a flash that changes the internal memory card from emmc to reg browse the threads in dev you'll surely find it there

cyanogenmod settings -> application -> use internal storage
check this, reboot, and the internal storage should be mounted on /sdcard and /mnt/sdcard, while external sd card (if exists) will be mounted on /mnt/emmc
There is a 2GB for apps if I am not mistaken.

roughly 1.5gb for apps, with link2sd that 1.5gb is very generous since only some cache files are stored on internal and everything else being linked to the ext partition on sdcard. I have over 450+ apps/games on my phone atm using link2sd and reccomend it to anyone else who also likes installing tons of apps.

CyanogenMod 7 sdcard Switcharoo tweak/mod/fix!
When i first got CM7 on my Infuse I immediately came across an annoying problem (at least for me). Like all AT&T customers, my phone came with an external SD card with 2gb of storage and the phone itself has 16gb of internal storage. So i noticed that by default, my 2gb external sdcard was the mnt/sdcard directory that all my apps use and mnt\emmc was my internal 16gb. For me that sucked because all my Titanium Backups were in my internal sdcard and I coudnt move it to my external because of memory insufficiency. So i decided i would mod the ROM to switch these sdcard directories and have 16gb instead of 2gb in my mnt\sdcard directory.
So, to make this simpler for me and you, suppose:
----------------------------
Internal sdcard (16gb) = A
External sdcard (2gb) = B
----------------------------
A is by default in mnt\emmc
B is by default in mnt\sdcard
----------------------------
The problem with the above statements is that 2gb is not enough to make it my default sdcard. Apps like Titanium Backup, Dropbox, Camera and tons of others (like games) always store things in mnt\sdcard and they can rarely be configured to store elsewhere (at least to my knowledge).
So to solve the problem i edited the mnt\system\etc\vold.fstab file. This file just contains some random gibberish about where the sdcards mount to. So i switched the mounting directories of the two sdcards A and B. So far all i had to do is copy over the apps stored in my external to the new external mount (mnt\emmc).
So in short the only thing this changes is: (the before and after pic)
Before:
mnt\emmc is internal 16gb
mnt\sdcard is external 2gb
After:
mnt\emmc is external 2gb
mnt\sdcard is internal 16gb
Now, if lets say you had your apps stored in A and used my tweak. You would have to copy your apps over to B because thats the new A. Confusing i know...im trying. lol
So here is the procedure:
0. Download the attachment below and unzip it in your phone somewhere
1. Make sure you have root explorer or similar app
2. Using your explorer app mount mnt\system\ R/W
3. Navigate to vold.fstab file in mnt\system\etc
4. Rename the file to vold.fstab.bak (to keep it backed up)
5. Now find the directory where you downloaded and put my new vold.fstab file
6. Copy my new vold.fstab file to mnt\system\etc and paste
7. Reboot phone.
If you encounter difficulties, then undo the process by first deleting my modded vold.fstab and then renaming your old vold.fstab.bak to vold.fstab and then rebooting.
Also, Keep in mind that this is for CM7 users. Don't use it if you don't know what CM7 is or don't use CM7 port. Cheers, hope this helps someone.
A much easier solution:
Go to Settings -> CyanogenMod settings -> Application
Uncheck "Use internal storage"
Reboot.

I understand exactly what you are after. Unchecking "Use internal storage" mounts the internal storage as mnt\sdcard. There is no reason to do it any other way.
My /mnt/sdcard is the internal memory and my 4GB microsd is my external storage been like that from stock and I have all of my important stuff on the external for obvious reasons. Don't know why you would need this am I missing something?

This is exactly right - unchecking internal storage does exactly what your tweak does.
I have a 16 gig SD internal and external and I prefer using external which is default, when my phone had to be redone due to bad flash, I loss everything on my internal. Even if I checked something wrong it still feels safer using external last I checked 16gig cards are like 25 bux. I want 32gig next. Sounds to me like a poor attempt to get status here. Try on a group less educated then xda. I feel offended by this trick.

Also Titanium allows you to change the backup folder location.
Cool. thanks for telling me. but that never worked for me. so this did and i dont care how u guys do it as long as the results are the same.

Hi,
I have a g2x and i recently rooted it using superoneclick and i tried to back up using nvflash
however when i boot into recovery and try to install a zip or do anything with an sdcard, it says cant mount sdcard.
i ended up installing cyanogenmod 7 using rom manager.
but at the moment i cant do anything that involves using the sdcard because it cant mount.
any ideas on how to fix this?
thanks in advance
When you're in recovery, have you simply tried taking out the memory card then putting it back in?
Sometimes the simplest solutions work. It used to not mount my sd card too and just popping it out and back in made it read it.

It's the way they memory is partitioned. ~3 GB for the System and Apps, 5GB for other stuff. There's a workaround/fix for CM7 in the development forum (atleast I think there was) but I don't know if it works anymore.

Right now if I go to storage in settings I have my SD card then I have internal storage with 1.48 gigs and then I have additional storage /mnt/emmc which has 5.21 gigs. At the moment apps installed from the android market go to the internal storage and apps online go to the SD card but I can move them to the internal memory. It seems that at the moment the one place with the most memory can't be used so I'm guessing thats the partition your talking about

And can you give me the link to that? Thanks

You're right, I don't believe it can be used (natively for apps atleast, you can always move media and files there). Unless you mount that internal partition to be the external SD card and do a Move to SD on the apps (both are settings in Android/CM7 somewhere) there's not much else you can do. The problem is that some apps don't work on the SD, of course you could keep those on the system partition.
Sorry if my replies are starting to get confusing, it's late here.
I use link2sd which creates a mount point script that uses the extra partition on external sdcard. I used minitool partitioned to create a 10gb ext4 on my 32gb class 10( I'm an app junkie lol). Most if not all apps/games moved with link2sd work flawlessly, I'm happy with it

Just a comment:
1GB of internal storage is usually enough even if you have a lot of apps. I, for example, have ~55 apps installed and I still have 600mb of free space.
Partitioning your card and using an ext partition as internal memory is not that good because: it will damage the card in time (continuous read-write on SD) and it's recommended you have at least a good class 6 card because the read/write speeds of your stock 8gb SD are way slower than the speeds of the internal flash memory.
Did you really run out of internal momeory on your Sensation?

hi
I've got a problem almost in the same category
my phone is sensation xe with beats audio runnicing ICS with sense 3.6
Problem in short : I can't move any app to my sd card !!!
I've tried the offecial built in feature of moving apps to sd card but every time I do i get the message " can't move app "
I've also tried a third party app like "Apps2sd" but the same problem exists.
any ideas what could be the probem and what solutions can be applied
yes,are you rooted?? If not their are LIMITATIONS on which apps can be moved and which can't. Unless your rooted you have to obide to these limits. Now if your rooted its a different story, you SHOULD be able to move just about ANY app you want! Of course you want to be careful what you move because it can interfere with things like moving widjets to SD will sometimes cause them not to work. But you can easily move them back when you want to use them. Hope this helped!

If you have root, run
Code:
su
pm setInstallLocation 2
And more apps will magically have the ability to move to your SD card.
