What is the right price for an S-OFF phone? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I searched everywhere and was just curious what the current value range would be?
Sent from my HTC One XL

Um... Why are you looking for s-off there's only a couple that own this phone that have s-off

I have one and was curious if they have any premium over the S-ON version if I decided to switch.
Sent from my HTC One XL

I wouldn't pay much more for a s-off phone. At some point we may get s-off and it will lose value
The advantage of s-off for regular users is being able to flash kernels in recovery. You can downgrade your hboot and be able to do this

I agree.

Changed my mind I don't care what they are worth since I like it and I'm not selling it.

I'll take it off your hands for $20, assuming you throw in shipping.

I like the phone. I have it dialed in for my needs. If I had the new firmware and hboot it would be the exact same answer too

I think having the htc logo rather than the at&t logo is worth $20 all by itself!

Hi,
The phone that I bought off eBay a couple of months ago, shows S-Off in the bootloader (on Hboot 1.09). I never thought that it was a rare piece.
EDIT: It seems I misunderstood. It has to be S-Off before you unlock it, right?

No.

Not sure about your phone but I didn't have to sim unlock or unlock the boatloader on mine. Just rooted it and loaded twrp and started flashing roms the first night I got it.
Sent from my HTC One XL

I got it SIM unlocked from eBay (India) and then I followed the All-In_One Kit by hasoon2000 to root and install a custom ROM. So I did an HTC-Dev unlock.
Anyhow, I get S-Off in the bootloader now. So all I know is that I dont need to flash any .img for installing custom ROMs.

I don't work for HTC so I can't tell you. Are you paying for service? Or using your warranty? If you're trying to use warranty, it was voided the second the BL was unlocked. You may luck out and they might not check or see it. What's the worst that could happen? They send it back and say they can't service it?
If you bought it from AT&T, return it to AT&T. There have been a bunch of reports by folks on here that have had warranty honored by AT&T even though the bootloader is RELOCKED. And haven't seen any reports of AT&T doing otherwise.

It will always only say RELOCKED. Only way for it to say LOCKED is if the bootloader was never unlocked. Some think the flag can be changed to LOCKED if we get S-Off. RUU will only remove the TAMPERED tag. It will not make it back to LOCKED.

Well I got up today proud of myself for having made the decision to go ahead and root my AT&T HOX.
I have a 32 gig 10 inch Toshiba Thrive that is rooted running ICS. Then I discover there are several HOX models....and several firmwares. With sweaty palms I swiped one finger down and shaking almost too much to hit ABOUT scrolled on to the bitter truth of 2.20.502.7...
This phone cannot be rooted.
Now I must try to gather myself and use the technique I am lacking the most in.... Patience.
So Fredfly, I'm sure someone here can tell you better than I but as far as I can judge if your bro's firmware is like or higher than mine just take a number and have a seat.

I'm in the same boat Jonathan... just got mine this week and it's 2.2. Does anyone know if there is anyone working on rooting 2.2?

What version of the HOX do you have? The AT&T version? If the firmware is below 2.20, then you have a plethora of methods you can use if you simply look in the dev section. If you're so inclined, you can use the guide that I wrote for the Telus version in my signature. The attached software should work for the AT&T as well as the Telus and Rogers versions as well.
If you got your one X from Rogers then you're fine. First go to htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader. Then flash TWRP recovery (evita version) . Then put the zip file for a custom rom into the sdcard, boot into TWRP recovery, and install it. Then do a factory reset from TWRP and reboot. As a first rom to try, I recommend CleanROM or VIPER XL.
Hey guys thanks for the advice. I looked at HTC dev and its exactly the same as the one s. I checked my brother's firmware this weekend and its 1.8... I will attempt to root and unlock this weekend. Also thanks for the Rom recommendations. I will probably put viper on his phone as I am familiar with the venom team and know they do great work.

Its not firmware 2.20 and above. Its only firmware 2.20 that is unrootable (at this time). Its all about AT&T. Every other carrier is allowing the bootloader to be unlocked via HTCDev.com.
There have been a few version numbers higher than 2.20 (2.23, 2.29, 2.33). AFAIK, they can all be bootloader unlocked.

I really need some help with HTC One XL

I bought this phone outright, and I don't like the Telstra network so I put an Optus SIM in. Which works just fine, however I now have an issue which may or may not be related. I have unlocked my bootloader, and have obtained root. I cannot get s-off however, tried all the methods in this forum. And when I try to install a new Rom, such as cm10 and all nightly versions, venom viper, and all other Roms I have tried I cannot get passed the start up logo (or I just get a pure black screen). Yes I have waited and waited for extended periods of time but it won't load. No I'm not new to rooted phones, and have followed all insructions properly. Pls help me, I really hate all the Telstra bloatware on my phone.

you have to fastboot flash the boot.img when you are s-on
Only problem is I used that stupid one xl one click toolbox for my root. Which has completely stuffed me up.I should have done it the hard way like I did with my incredible s. I just got lazy. Don't suppose you know how to get s-off, without the one click fixes. Unfortunately they arnt working on this phone to acheive s-off

Not necessarily. It depends on your hboot version I believe.
I've never had to flash the boot image and I haven't done s-off.
@OP - did you need to s-off for any specific reason? You don't need to do this to flash a custom ROM. It's not required unless you want to reove the tampered text from the boot loader.
It makes life easier to have s-off. Besides I have issues with not having full access to something I have bought outright....lol

I s-off'd my HOXL because it makes it much safer from my own boneheaded mistakes. If I had done something silly like flashing the OTA RUU then I wouldn't be completely screwed.

Sending phone in for repair

Im s-off running viper xl with a custom boot splash and radio and super cid.

Hey bro. Are u sending it to htc for repair? Or verizon? I would assume htc, since it is a "repair". If so, then u really dont need to return it to stock. They dont care unless its something software related, but since its hardware, u should b good. After u run the ruu, u should b stock anyways, no?

You would think incorrectly. HTC reserves to right, and has, voided warranties for flashing custom ROMs.
Its been discussed on the "international" One X forum, that some folks have had warranty claims denied due to having ever flashed a custom ROM, despite returning to stock. Apparently, they still have some way to tell, even if you RUU to stock. Although they will honor the warranty if the bootloader is unlocked, but a custom ROM never installed. Inconsistent and a bit strange.
But HTC warranty service probably varies a bit by region. So its at least worth a try.

Most folks on here in the US seem to send their phones to AT&T (which seem to be pretty lenient). So its good to hear a report regarding HTC US.
Everywhere else I've read, HTC can be pretty brutal.

Ya bro, ive had all positive experiances with HTC. Im on my third replacement DNA from them. All free replacements. One cracked screen, one bricked, wouldnt take a charge, or boot, and this 3rd, which im waiting on right now as a matter of fact. fed ex should b here any moment. It had a blue blotch, or "smudge, within the screen. But all of them i had absolutely no problems getting them warranted out.
If they get a phone which is s-off, for all they know, they sent out a dev phone on accident. Ive seen it numerous times.

Flashing a custom rom can cause some hardware issues, so I can understand why HTC wouldn't warrant it.
If I was returning to HTC, I would change the CID back and RUU but leave bootloader unlocked and S-OFF, this way, if they decide to update the software to the latest, you can still flash and whatnot.

If you're S-OFF you don't need to relock to run an RUU and since S-OFF doesn't actually give full access on the oneXL without an unlocked bootloader, best to just leave them both.

Ok, that's jb 4.1, not jb 4.2.
If you had SuperCID (which you most likely did) and s-on you've bricked your phone. There's nothing you can do now except get it repaired. You have two options: either jtag repair (about $60) or get HTC to replace the motherboard (about $200).
This just goes to show that a lack of education about what you're doing to your phone leads to disastrous consequences. Once you've had your phone repaired, do yourself a favour and either leave it stock, or do a lot of reading so you have a proper understanding of modifying your phone and the potential consequences.
