I looked around the forum and could not find an answer. Basically, I'm looking for the button combo that will force reboot the phone. Sometimes, I get SOD (Screen of Death) and need to reboot the phone. I want an alternative to pulling the battery.....
I did read on a website that was talking about tips and trick, hold the power button down and it will do a soft reboot. Haven't tried it though, could be bs.

It's BS.....didn't work. Anyone else know how to trigger a reboot on our phone? My old Droid Incredible did it by holding the Power, Vol Down, and Menu key (I think)....I feel like this phone should have something similar. Nobody likes pulling the battery!
If the software is truly locked up, nothing is going to force reset it except cutting off the power source (pulling the battery). Be thankful we can do that on our phones, iPhone users have been dealing with this for years and have to wait for the battery to die.

Research those 3-finger salute methods. They truly are fail safes when your phone completely locks up. Devs describe it as the end all (battery pulling replacement). Although it might be considered a hidden feature on most phones, I'm sort of surprised nobody has discovered how to do it on the S3.

Friend's iPhone locked up, power+home for 10-15 seconds restarted it without issue. Also, if it is a 4/4s/5 it is easy to take apart so you could unplug the battery from the board if you were desperate.

I second this and we'll add on my RAZR when it locked up all I had to do was hold both volume and power (I think that was out). Having said that I don't get why you wouldn't just pull the battery in this'd phone.

I could pull the battery...and currently do when my S3 freezes. Sadly, doing this is rather cumbersome for my situation. To remove the battery:
1. Remove case which is tightly bound to phone.....I foresee repeated removal will harm case.
2. Remove battery backing from phone.
3. Remove small metal disc I've placed in between phone backing and battery. This metal disc is part of a Magnetic Car Mount I use (very slick). Placement of this metal disc is specific to avoid NFC issues.
Given all that, battery removal is a total PITA. I don't think I'm alone here.......I imagine the vast majority of people would prefer a button-hold combination to force restart their phone in the event of a freeze. I believe this is the very reason the method was created. Nobody likes removing their battery....especially after knowing other phones have more elegant methods of force restarting. Furthermore, I have a strong feeling the S3 DOES HAS such ability. It is just a matter of discovering what the proper combination is.....maybe its 2-button hold.....maybe 4-button hold....I just don't know. That is why I'm here asking.
I didn't mean anything by saying that, I forget all the stuff people have on their phones because I run mine bare. I'm sure there is a way to do it just seems like no one knows it. I'll say the one or twice mines froze up it rebooted itself after a little bit.

Before I bought the GS3 I had an HTC One S and the battery wasn't able to be removed. If you held the power button for like 10+ seconds it would force reboot the same way power + home on iphone forces reboot. It seems crazy to me that you can't do that on every phone. I mean phone manufactures have to anticipate phones freezing up every once in a great while. How do they expect them to restart? Expecting a customer to remove the case and the phone backing to pull the battery seems like a terrible way to solve this.

I've tried many button combinations with no luck, including the one aforementioned.
Haha, can't that get to work for the life of me. Took screen shots, turned up volume, brought up apps but no reboot.

You have to hold power, vol+- for about 5 to 10 seconds, to power down idk how to force a reboot. But this method is good enough for me. I use it all the time it works on tw and aosp Roms. Sometimes it powers down around the 5 second time and sometimes it takes longer ldk why, guess it depends on how locked up you are.

It's weird that this function would be ROM specific. I specifically remember this function was a constant across ALL ROMS on my Droid Incredible. Pisses me off I can't perform this reset on CM10....then again, its still kinda phasing bugs out..so who knows.

Interesting, I tried all of the combinations given in this thread and they did not work. Of particular importance though, this three finger salute method is still reliant on software working to control it. I don't know how it is controlled in other devices, but if the software that controls it is locked up, nothing is going to reset it except for pulling the battery.
I did it just now by just holding down the power button for about 10 seconds. I'm running slim bean rom.

Didn't work on CleanROM 5.0. I would think if there is truly a software reset on our devices, it must be controlled separately from the ROM and should be the exact same combination regardless of what ROM you are running.

The power button suddenly quit working today. I left it in my grandparents car while we were in church (boring) and after church, I tried to turn it on, but the power button didn't do anything! So when we got home, I plugged it in, then the screen came on as if nothing was wrong. I tried pressing the power button, but nothing happened. Is there any way to reboot it without the power button (and no I am not rooted, I'm keeping my tablet stock, unlike my DInc )? Do you think it's a hardware (button) problem or a software problem? The button clicks when you press it just as it always has, so I don't know what the problem is

Sounds like black screen of death. Nothing serious, just hold power button for 10 seconds, then start it again and it should be fine.
Otherwise root and flash netformer 1.4r2, which may or may not fix the issue.

I had same problem yester day in school. I put my transformer on the desk and nothing else. When I wanted to turn it on nothing happens. In house i put the power cable to it and it worked, but power button isn't working...
You can probably find a widget or three that will allow you to reboot.
DO you have ADB setup? You can ADB reboot.

Mine had the same problem shortly after I purchased during the summer. I ended up having to send it in to be repaired under warrenty. According to the repair sheet they replaced a daughter board.

No one can help you except Asus. Sounds like you need an RMA.
I had a similar problem with my volume button exactly two weeks after getting my Transformer. I promptly returned it to Best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. Luckily I was still within my return/exchange period (by the skin of my teeth).
I now try to avoid using the hardware buttons as much as possible. I use the audio manager app to control the volume and plug the device in to turn it on (I try to use the power button as little as possible). I'm not rooted so I have to use the button to turn of my device.
Those buttons always felt a bit flimsy to me and I see it as the biggest build quality issue with the Transformer.

You don't need Root to have a screen button to turn off your TF.
All you need is the free app 'Screen Off and Lock'
It's an excellent App with a lot of amusing tools for switching the screen off.
I have it installed on my non-rooted Samsung Galaxy SII. The Market says it is compatible with the TF.

I'll eventually root my TF and try out an app that will allow me to shut down my TF without using the hardware button. My TF is a B7O but I think it an early rootable version.

Just letting you know that my power button died while the unit was still quite new. I ended up having to send it back for repairs to the dreaded Texas center (at my cost I may add) but they got it back in about a week and it seems to work, at least for the time being. Between that and having had to have my dock repaired this has been the most problematic tablet/computer I have ever owned. It is actually a pretty nice unit in many ways, but build quality seems to be pretty abysmal. What worries me is that if it has so many problems when it is new, what will it be like when it has a bit of age on it? This has also prevented me from rooting it until the warranty is over, since if something like this goes wrong and you can't restore it to stock they won't fix it.
I had the same problem after I got a new cover. The power button did not do anything while in the cover, when I took it out of the new cover the power button works perfectly. The new cover has magnets for closing it. I belive the magnets were causing interference. Everything is good now.
This has been happening for a few days now, the phone turns off and endlessly vibrates until I pull the battery, and then it does it again and again but it'll work for a few hours before it happens again... I've tried different roms but its still happening and it's getting very frustrating
does it do it on stock? And are you over clocked?

You mean like physically? Seems fine the phone just starts doing it randomly while it's just sitting on the bed. Right now it's not even turning on at all no matter what I try :/

It's in download mode now, I'm going to try downloading stock Rogers ICS and see if the problem persists, if it does I still have 5 months of warranty so hopefully that'll be covered

try this test, when it goes through the bootloop, keep the power button depressed w/out releasing it and see if it displays the same charactersistics as your bootloops, also count the seconds each situation has, if they are the same then the problem is the sticky power button

Try and try and try and sooner or later you'll probably get it. I could care less about the phone as I have a replacement coming, but I wanted to get my data off of it.
Open up you're phone if you're comfortable and mess with the power button directly some, either you're going to fix it long enough to get your data or break it completely...doesn't really matter at this point.
Just put the battery in and right after the phone vibrates hold the power button and see how lucky you are at getting it to last the full 8+ seconds instead of the usual 2 before it reboots and vibrates.
Once you get it working, don't touch that *****. As gently as possible, set it down and get your USB in, turn on Mass USB and debugging and copy your stuff. Put the timeout to the max or download an app so you don't have to touch the power button ever and just touch the screen every once in awhile if you don't have an app. Don't forget to reset your flash counter and reflash stock ODIN if you're rooted or on anything custom (Use ADB to reboot through all this)
Honestly...I let my phone restart on its own for a total of like 8 hours (I didn't care and honestly hoped it burnt up or something and was completely fried) and I watched it for a good chunk of the time and it never booted up on its own. After I took it apart twice and beat the hell out of the power button a good while I finally got it to work.
Repeatedly mashing it after 'attempting' to clean it and then pulling the battery/reinserting and seeing if it worked is how I finally got mine.
Now it's just a paper weight till the new one comes.
Edit: I find it weird that a lot more of these problems are popping up. I noticed a bunch of threads on various sites towards the end of June that had popped up and now some are here too recently. I guess the Skyrocket's cheap-feeling Power Button is indeed...cheap.
It isn't the power button. I posted this problem months ago and took it in to a device center. It was actually a battery issue where it connects into the phone. The charge going into the phone doesn't stick, causing it to flicker power and thus restart constantly. They never ended up getting my old one to turn on and never saw it was rooted and what not. Ended up just giving me a refurbished one.

well if it never turns on, then its not the sticky power button problem, the sticky power button has a reboot symptom at a consistent interval

Alright, I will definitely try and try until the phone turns on before taking it into the store. This has actually been happening for a few days now but I didn't really care too much because I was really busy and I thought since it turns on after a few tries, I'll just take the files off and return it to stock later. Also, yesterday someone gave the suggestion of repeatedly jamming the power button and that actually worked twice but after that it never worked again.
Is it possible to remove the back and fix the power button without voiding the warranty (are there any stickers)?
EDIT: I have it disassembled right now, what exactly should I do to the power button? I tried clicking it a few times and blowing at it nd I put the battery in but still the same thing
EDIT 2: Umm what looks to be the litmus paper on the inside is red.. the phone has never come in contact with water so how is this possible..
EDIT 3: Every housing I've seen online (4-5) has a red square on the housing so I'm guessing it comes in red by default? Either way I'm taking it to Rogers right now, they said I could have a refurbished for 35 or I can just repair this one so I'm just going to repair it and hopefully the files will be preserved.
My only concern.. the phone running Juggernaut 5 right now LOL and the internal SD is full of rom zips and kernels so hopefully they don't look at that, or don't care. Once they repair the phone, what can they really do tho? Break it again nd send it back? haha

I would just fiddle with the power hoping for the best.
As far as your roms go, I doubt it'll be a problem. A) They're not going to get the phone to turn on anyway. They're probably just going to repair the button and reflash before they even check anything. Either way, like you said, the worst case is they find it but you already have your replacement...maybe they'll try charging you the phone, throw a hassle and offer to cancel your service and tell them to send you your "unwarranteed phone" and the button repair bill and they can have theirs back. I don't seem them getting you for it. All they might do is check the flash counter which probably hasn't been tripped if you didn't use a bad ODIN.

Flash counter is at 0, I checked when I managed to get into Download mode before it stopped working altogether. Juggernaut 5 is a rom for the Hercules (T989) and that's not the problem, I've used it before and I only flashed it after the problem started because I thought ICS was the problem, but it stayed even after flashing Juggernaut.

I I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket i727 (with stock firmware and ROM), i dont have a SD card and not too many apps installed either, maybe 10-15 apps at most. Today while the phone was in my pocket it just went into this continous reboot cycle, it reboots, gets to the AT&T splash screen and then reboots again and then this goes on forever.
I googled the hell out of this issue but cant seem to find a solid solution and hence hoping u guys can help.
I cannot get into recovery mode cause it never gets past the splash screen
I cannot seems to perform a hard reset (power button + volume key) , it just reboots again.
I tried plugging the phone and connecting via USB but it doesnt help either, it reboots before the computer can detect the phone.
Hope u guys can help ? life without android is no fun...

anyway to fix it or m i close to a paperweight by now. I do not have warranty on this phone
I explored the stuck power buton option and lightly banged the phoen around in hopes that it would let loose but no luck.

I had this same issue with my LG Phoenix, I tried the needle around the power button, and that popped it back to normal. Apparently I held the button down to a side and it got stuck even though the actual button part was in it's "normal," position.
However it did reboot several more times after I got it unstuck. I did remove the back & battery, & unplugged it. Let it sit for a few minutes, after that I put the USB cable back in, then pressed the power button, put the battery back in and pressed the button again, and it went through the normal reboot process.
Just wanted to give you guys an update that i started cleaning the part around the edges as some folks suggested and that failed. then tried smacking around and blowing air into and that failed. Then took the entire phone apart and cleaned it several times using different techniques and sad to say that it all failed and i m SOL.
Bummer but it is what it is and i was quiet happy with that phone.

Did you offer up Bacon to the phone as a snackrifice?
I'm sorry that none of these options worked out for you.
Its very easy to open I changed a motherboard for a hard bricked i727 very easy to change power button or unstuck it

Where does one find a power button for the skyrocket (the one attached to the motherboard)? The closest thing I could find was this:

It is a repair service though and I live in Canada, I would prefer if I could just order that part. I have been to few repair shops that cant do anything because this power button is hard to find. I opened up the motherboard and the power button clicks fine, so I think it probably has to be replaced.

My friend works in aerospace and had told me about one of the things they need to worry about is temperature causing wire shrinkage due to temperature. For whatever reason, I decided to use that logic and throw my phone in the freezer wrapped in a dry rag. 30min later and the phone finally worked after 8 hours of the boot loop/no boot. That was around November and I haven't had an issue with it since (until today, but it is a different issue).

can any one else confirm this? my phone keeps shutting off. when the screen is black, itll vibrate every second. im assuming its another stuck power button.

I have just fixed mine!!!!
There is a little battery on the circuit board when you take apart the phone. It looks like a small watch battery. Top side is and bottom side are opposite polarities.
I had the exact same symptom. Sometimes just pressing the power button momentarily would bring up the power down menu, then I knew to press it a bunch of times because it was stick. If I didn't eventually it would turn off and vibrate constantly. It kept getting worse.
I measured with an ohm meter and the button itself seems fine so I figured maybe the digital logic relating to the button itself is faulty. So I shorted the little battery on the board (do this only for a brief period, no more than 1s) and put it back together.
Its behaving perfectly normally. I was also getting weird artifacts during video playback before, kind of like what failing solder would do on a bga gpu. It fixed that too.
So I think its similar to that problem some laptops have, where it wont turn on until you remove the battery, hold the power button down a couple times, and then plug it in. It seems a complete circuit discharge fixed this problem at least for me.

In that picture its the silver shiny metal circle. To short it you connect the bottom soldered part to the metal plate on top of the battery. This comlpetely drains all circuits.
So I think a lot of these problems are caused by a phantom charge. In any sense, Im very very happy
Also this could explain why the fridge method worked. Cooling the battery can significantly drop its charge, however I would advise against the cooling method if possible.

You'd need to find a friend or local electronics repair shop, but I ordered some here:

The buttons are $0.99 USD if you buy 2 or more ($1.05 CAD), but 5-7 day business shipping is like $16.99. Still cheaper than a replacement phone, and it's an easy fix for an electronics person or electronics/tv/computer repair shop... At the rate these power buttons have had reported failures, and for the price, I'd get a couple of them in case the replacement fails in the future...
If my wife keeps squeezing the power button on her phone when some crappy app she has wigs out, I'll be needing my second button sooner rather than later...
why when one person says it something everyone band wagons on that idea. i actually had the same issue my skyrocket couldn't go pass the "samsung" screen. all i did was flash a new rom or i just restored an old backup

Then it was user error or a bad flash. And that's software, not hardware.
Skyrocket power buttons are known to fail. I believe Samsung has even acknowledged this.
When your phone randomly goes into a 1-second vibration cycle, sometimes showing the reboot menu beforehand without pressing the button, more than likely it's the power button that has either failed or is sticking.
With my wife's phone, the button was not sticking, and usually lightly tapping the phone at the right angle on your lap or the counter would break the vibration cycle and let it boot up, until the next random power button press and vib cycle would happen.
Button replaced, same exact ROM, and problem gone. :thumbup:

I have a repair shop and i fix these issues with no problem. the only issue im located in Puerto Rico. when the power button gets stuck is because of heavy use, a fall or something that makes a lot of pressure to it and the copper contacts inside the button stay making contact. this is know to happen to i727-i717-i997-i897 and some other galaxy s1 s2 models.
i attached the picture of the power button.
Just got my white 32gb and out of the box it has a very sticky power button. Sticks all the way down almost every time I push it so the power menu comes up. Anybody else have something like this happen?

I'm having this happen actually. Did you find a way to pop the back off and fix it, or did you send it back?

Actually after about a week of usage, it worked itself out and was fine. Haven't had a problem since, so I'd say just give it time and see if the problem resolves itself like mine.
Not sure if you've made the choice to unlock/root yet, but if you have, I'd highly suggest installing a kernel w/ sweep or tap to wake features. Additionally, it's (in my opinion, of course) a good habit to utilize a widget or toggle that will turn your screen off w/ a tap as well.
Obviously, if you determine you've got a manufacturer defect w/ the power button, by all means replace it. But the less dependent you are on the hard buttons, the less wear & tear on them. More often than not, these buttons are the first to go the longer you have your phone.

Mine seems to have sorted itself out too. The button doesn't seem to have that satisfying click my Nexus 4 did.
Glad your power button got sorted out. Being a new phone, I would probably send it back, rather than crack it open, but that's me.
On another note... Personally, I haven't touched my power button in a long time. I use "Gravity Screen," which shuts my phone off when I put my N5 in my pocket and turns it on when I pull it out, It also senses the micro-movements of my hands when I'm using it, and prevents the screen from timing out, If I set it down on a table, and it shuts off (due to timeout), I only have to wave my hand over it to turn it back on.
This app literally changed the way I use my phone, which is why I sprung for the $2 (ish) pro version, rather than the free one I linked. I highly recommend checking it out.
I RMA'd my 32GB White because of this as well as a vibration issue.

After 3 RMAs (= 4 different N5s) I stuck with the last phone and fixed the (loose) power button myself because I was fed up with the quality.
It is really no problem opening a phone, especially if you have done it with a PC before.

So I've tried factory wiping and installing a few different roms and no matter which one I go to I keep getting these random reboots. This is particularly troubling when I restore an older rom that I know I was not having this particular issue on.
It is making my phone pretty close to unusable since it will often go into an "Optimizing apps!" speil draining battery and taking an obnoxiously long time to reboot. Not sure what is up. Any suggestions?

Try with a clean flash (or the factory images) without user data/modifications and see if your RRs are still there.
Is the power button stuck by any chance?

I've factory reset a few times and wiped everything except internal storage pretty much. Even tried wiping user data just to see if it would help

I don't think it's getting stuck it still seems to go in and out properly. I even took it out the case just to make sure there wasn't something I couldnt' seee putting pressure on it

The button will NOT seem to be stuck, even if it is, as the contact is made internally. My bro´s Nexus had this problem, and by the end it kept rebooting constantly because the button was making contact on its own. I fixed it by tapping vigorously at the area between the power button and the camera and that made it work.
A way to know if it is stuck could be to press the volume down key as soon as it restarts, if it goes into recovery, then there is no doubt the power button is stuck.
Don´t dismiss hardware problems, as many Nexus are affected by the power button issue and you already tried software solutions which didn´t work.
Hope you sort it out. Remember to use an app to avoid pressing the button so much, such as when waking the device. I recommend Gravity Screen, but there are many other options.

Holding down volume after one reset actually put me into recovery. Plus it's restarting at times in recovery now :/
I doubt it's under warranty since I got it in feb 2014 x.x

If you got it directly from Google, I'd try calling them up and asking for a replacement even if you are a few months off the warranty period, I have read some stories of them honoring warranties in order to get rid of stock. That'd be true even now that the new Nexus is supposedly releasing this year. Nothing wrong with trying, you might get a new, shiny phone.
That being said, don't worry, it's perfectly fixable. The part that gets stuck is not the button itself, but the part that goes into the motherboard, so don't bother fiddling with the black button. I managed to fix my brother's button by doing the following:
- Clean the area between the button and phone of debris or any dirt that could be causing it to be stuck. This is just to be on the safe side, as it is unlikely that it is the cause of the malfunction.
- Take the case off the phone if you haven't, and then put it upside down and tap vigorously with your fingers in the area between the camera and the power button. It might not work the first few times, but it eventually will release the part that is stuck.
- As soon as you can get it to turn on without rebooting itself, install Gravity Screen, or any other app that replaces the power button to wake up or turn the screen off. You are looking to use the button as few times as possible.
After doing that, his Nexus went for being unusable due to constant reboots to working fine. It's been almost 6 months since it happened so it is bound to work, just don't lose heart and patiently work at it. Tap a bit harder if it's not working. Let us know whether you managed to fix it.

I'm going to get in contact with google. I tried pushing down on the area between the camera and it didn't help much. It has started working again properly after a really peculiar work around. I just don't want to have to be super cautious of a button for the rest of the time i own my device :/

Well someone mentioned maybe trying to clean it out somehow. I tried canned air and that didn't do anything so I formed a seal over the button using my mouth and then proceeded to exhale. It has yet to give me any trouble since then.
Had exactly the same issue, reboots over and over again, couldn't boot to bootloader without reboot...
What helped for me was something I read somewhere else, don't remember where, was knocking on the back cover between camera lense and the power switch, did it 4 days ago and it works since than..

Sounds sexual
You can take the back cover off, and if you are careful there is no sticker or seal that would tell google you have opened the device. It is difficult to pull all the way off, the vibration motor is attached to the case back and comes off with it so it would seem stuck. You just have to keep pulling.

Pressing on the area between the camera and the on switch seems to help a lot of people it didn't seems ot have much of an effect for me. While my phone hasn't given me issues since shortly after I posted this thread I'm kinda worried I'm one drop away from the issue coming back

Would this allow me to repair it?
Yeah but you'd need to unscrew a plastic cover that is inside the phone. Phillips head screws, jewelers screwdriver size. Depends on if its dirt or a broken switch though.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but this is a widespread problem that google is aware of fro some time now. It's not the power button but it's burried deep in the software and appreas to have popped up right after the Lollipop 5.1 up date. Check out all the posts on Google

While it apprears to be confined to the Nexus 5 I have had it happen with my nexus 4 just running stock L 5.1

Weirdly enough, my power button works flawlessly on 5 and 5.1. Red 32gb from the google play store. I've opened the case multiple times and put Arctic silver knockoff heat compound in sloppily and without regard, no issues other than sprint screwing up their spark LTE rollout.

Sorry, I disagree. While some instances might be related to software, it has been proven that there is in fact a problem with the physical button getting stuck on Nexus 5 phones. You can check it online and will find lots of hits and even YouTube videos, most of them around the time before lollipop.
Best way to check whether it is software or hardware is to press the volume down key when your phone reboots by itself. If it takes you to the recovery, you can bet your cat that it is not lollipop's fault

It's usually when I've doing something with the phone (today was flicking through my GPM library). I'll power it back on and it will boot cleanly and then (more often than not) power down again. Other times it will bootloop, but that's rare. It seems to me that if I let it boot up and then don't touch it for a while, it will stay up but I'm not sure that's consistent.
Anyone else seen or heard of the power button causing a powerdown instead of bootloop?

You will need to troubleshoot this the old-fashioned way. Have you installed any updates, apps, mods or anything recently?
Best case scenario would be that you flash a stock image without restoring apps, kernel or any mods. Run the phone for some time, couple of days or so, and be on the lookout for power downs or reboots. After that, you can try adding a few apps at a time and keep checking. If the phone reboots even with a clean factory image, then I'd have to say the hardware is faulty. Could be the power button, could be something else.
