[Q] Soft brick/ Can't mount SD/ Unrecognizable device - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So apparently my phone decided to soft brick while I was sleeping the the other night. I can only get into the bootloader and recovery. I tried to relock my bootloader so I could run the RUU but my computer doesnt want to recognize the phone anymore. It just shows up as an Unknown Device. And in recovery, I can view some files but all my stuff was wiped. And when I try to wipe anything, it says unable to mount. Any help with this would be nice.

Suggest talking to Xs magical about this..he can shed some light

When in TWRP go to mount it while connected and windows should prompt you to format the drive.
Once formatted you can place a rom on it and flash it.

Soft bricked as well
I am having the same loop issue. Able to go into bootloader and get into twrp. I have formated internal sd card; tried to load several roms and flash boot img both externally and internally using an aroma loader. It's the Boot Img file that gets stuck. Anyways. it just turns on to htc splash screen and then off and then back to spalsh screen. Seems rom loads fine, but i notice it hangs on boot img 98%. When trying to flash the image itself it gives message of:

Flashing boot.img

It was still under the one year warranty. As long it doesn't have physical damage or liquid damage.

[Q] What are the signs of a Bricked phone?

My MT4GS is boot looping. I can get into the bootloader, but can't get into recovery and flashing a stock image doesn't do anything. I've unlocked the phone and achieved S-OFF using the j-bear wire trick. I've ran the phone for a few weeks after getting the s-off, so I don't think it's that. When I flash a stock image from the bootloader, the software/radio versions don't change and it still boot loops. I also have a faint red light in the notification and trackpad. I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?
well first thing id attempt is to grab an image of a recovery and try and flash it through fastboot, image HERE
fastboot command
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
if you need any further instruction on how to use fastboot you can get some info HERE
or if this dosent work or have more questions feel free to ask
its not a brick if you can get into hboot, you may have a tough time getting your phone working again but usually its doable.
good luck!
Thanks for the quick reply. I did a recovery flash through fastboot (CWM 5.0.2.7), but still couldn't get to recovery. I was able to update hboot to the jb_hboot. That allowed me to perform some more fastboot commands, such as: erase boot, recovery, system, userdata. I then tried to flashed a signed stock image, but still got stuck at boot loop and couldn't get into recovery. I might try TWRP recovery to see if it changes anything.
what all does it say on your bootloader screen now?
It says:

Well it let you write to the emmc so that's a good sign. Did it give you an error in fastboot? Or did it say completed in .9 sec or something like that?
What happens when you choose recovery from the bootloader screen? Also have you tried adb reboot-recovery?
Sent from my Desire Z using Tapatalk 2
when you say you cant get to recovery what's basically happening when you boot to recovery? Red triangle on screen? reboot loop? black screen? or what else.

I didn't get a fastboot error when I wrote to boot, it said completed and a time. When I choose recovery, I get a boot loop. I can't connect via adb. I don't think I have the right drivers setup for adb because when I type "adb remount" it says no device found.
Drivers taken from weekendsr2shorts mirror thread
it is strange that you can get fastboot working but not adb, but maybe more digging needs to be done to solve that. but it could just be from hboot screen there is no access to adb... come to think of it that sounds normal
try erasing recovery partition and flashing again, maybe there is some corruption there that stuck around even after the last flash
Code:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
see if any of that works
Erasing and flashing recovery still resulted in a boot loop. How can I find out if there is a corruption in flash?
Not too sure a great way of telling, maybe try reformatting recovery? On a side note what exactly were the stock image you were trying to flash? I believe there is an issue when flashing certain stock setups after the radio s-off, being the way bootloader varifies the radio, recovery, Rom, etc. Sometimes things can go awry when doing this. I don't have a ds yet (still waiting on stupid parts from China) so I haven't done a whole lot of research on this phone. Maybe someone will chime in who knows more specifically what to be looking for

You think I should try a custom ROM instead? Is there one available to flash through the bootloader or fastboot? I tried to flash the signed stock image zips with fastboot, but it complained about not finding expected signature. Sorry to hear about your DS. Hope you get your parts soon.

Here's a copy of my "platform-tools" files. They've always been flawless for me. You can also take the PG59IMG file and rename it to JUST PG59IMG.zip, put it in the root directory of your SD card and reboot and see if your bootloader will load it for you.
**you'll need to get a recovery operational before you can move on to custom ROMs. Edit: UNLESS you want to use Update.zip (See demkantor's post below.....)
This IS assuming that the main files you're running thru ADB have no corruption issues though.
Well you can flash roms through fastboot,
fastboot update.zip
Just change the name of the Rom to what's needed
Maybe try to format as many partitions as you can through fastboot first?

I flashed this recovery image via the bootloader and fastboot. Still no luck. Is erase and format the same thing? I've erased boot, recovery and system. I checked that they were erased by doing a Image CRC, which resulted in a 0 value. Then flashed the signed DS ROMs. It still resulted in the same, boot loop.
erasing will wipe out whats in the partition, formatting will get rid of the partition and replace it with a new one. so think of it as a super eraser sorta
fastboot format recovery
but you can also see if any of this helps but im not too sure it would
fastboot format system
fastboot fromat boot
fastboot format userdata
fastboot format cache
also you can do a fastboot oem format, never done this but my understanding is it will reformat most partitions for you, and something is nagging me about this one and i just cant remember, ill do some googleing and get back on that, although im not sure if any of this will help too much in your situation

[Q] No OS, can't get to bootloader or recovery

Hey everyone, I just went through the process of rooting my phone using the Hasoon200 tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952426). Everything worked fine; I unlocked the bootloader, flashed the TWRP recovery, and installed CM10. However I couldn't get past the CM10 loading screen so I went back to recovery and wiped everything I could (cache, dalvik, system, factory restore) then rebooted. After that I can't get past the white HTC "Quietly Brilliant" splash screen. No bootloader or recovery. Hasoon2000's tool can't reach the phone to do anything. Holding Down Volume and Power buttons just reboots to the splash screen. When I plug the USB into my computer it must be recognized somehow because it connection notification sound plays but I don't see the drive. What can I do now?
Turn on, hold power 10-15 seconds, until screen goes black, let off, press n hold volume down, press power just 2-3 seconds, let off power button but continue holding vol. Down
Than select recovery
And once in bootloader check if you have hboot 1.14

New to this phone and was a little overeager. I unlocked bootloader, rooted, installed TWRP and flashed CM but didn't flash the boot img before flashing CM so it boots forever, of course (I'm so dumb...)
I can get back to the bootloader where I try to flash my CM boot img but adb won't detect the device (presumably because usb debugging isn't selected since I can't boot into the rom). How can I either 1) get adb to detect so that I can flash the boot img with adb or 2) flash the boot img without adb?
Stumped. Thanks in advance for any/all that can help with this.

Hey! Thanks for replying. I'm stuck here. Fastboot flash of the boot img requires the phone to be usb detected, yes? I go to fastboot but when I type 'adb devices' I gets nothing back.
I don't think I was clear in my earlier post. I have CM and gapps flashed but it won't boot into the OS because I didn't flash the boot img first but now I can't get the phone to be detected by adb so I don't know how else to flash the boot img. Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I realize you didn't have to.

Stuck in bootloader loop
Folks, I was stuck in similar situation as well; I had missed copying the boot.img step initially and after i did a factory reset on the boot loader i got stuck in HTC logo screen with red lines warning.
I followed the directions provided on this thread and am now able to get into TWRP recovery screen. What would be the steps for me now to flash a rom onto the device again. I had flashed the ViperXL rom prior to me stupidly doing the factory reset.
Per directions on another thread, I was trying to first have the rom and boot.img loaded using the mount from TWRP. However when i do the the step of 'Mount USB storage', I get the warning that on my computer that i need to 'Format Disk drive'. Not sure why would i need to do it.
Please help!
Thanks

"Download (restores to official Froyo 2.2.2) (315MB)" and also "Download (restores to official Gingerbread 2.3.3) (309MB)". Was just wondering which one you tried if any at all.

4.Reboot to HBOOT: Shutdown completely (disconnect USB if connected and pull battery if necessary) then while holding down the VOL-DOWN key, press the POWER key for about half a second. The phone should boot into HBOOT, check the PD98IMG.zip for consistency, then prompt you to install. Select VOL-UP to install.
5.Once installed, HBOOT will prompt you to reboot by pressing the POWER button. Do this
I can get to step 4 and instead of flashing the PD98IMG.zip is says parsing and just goes back to hboot. I can't flash anything.
I have been making some MAJOR progress on my phone.. after messing around with a lot of fastboot commands, I found this with helped .. fastboot -c "lge.kcal=0|0|0|x" boot customrecovery.img if forces some images to boot.
Also the link I posted above only will work if my phone is relocked. I can't even make post in the Inspire 4G Android Development , because i'm "too new " to ask a question. But I managed to get his program to run again and I've noticed something. on step 7
7.Once successfully completed, the phone will automatically reboot to HBOOT and begin the process of installing the RUU. The only thing you have to do at this point is acknowledge the prompt to install by pressing VOL-UP. (Note: the RUU install may skip a couple of images during the install but this is normal.
IT FAILS to copy the RUU to the sdcard. and that's what has left my phone without an OS. I've also got the stock RUU htc_inspire4g_att_RUU_3.20.502.52_US.exe to run and complete But my phone hangs after the HTC logo..
So i'm headed in the right direction. Any ideas ???? ~ T

Also, you haven't told us what error message you get when you try to flash the boot.img. And is your bootloader unlocked??

What does forcing the boot.img means? there is no other way to flash a boot.img that in fastboot if you are S-ON. There is no need to be S-OFF to fastboot flash. In fact, having S-OFF is not enough to enable flash commands in fastboot (you actually need ENG S-OFF for that).
I suggest that you give detail information about the errors and what you are doing if you want to get helped.
Hello,
I have htc inspire. My phone was new sept 2011 and worked until july 2012. My phone was set to charge only and usb debug disable and was never rooted. One night I put the phone to charge and the next day it I turned it on but it never made past the white screen. I have tried to put the rom on sd card as PD98IMG. I tried RUU. The phone lists:

When I try using RUU it gets stuck on reloading bootloader
When I try the PD98IMG method using a goldcard, it gets stuck:
parsing...[SD ZIP]
[1] BOOTLOADER -UPDATING
[2] BOOT
[3] RECOVERY
etc
Please help
Not sure but What helped me get past the HTC logo screen is just recovering the old Stock of the phone.
The link provided is to return back to old stock AT&T Roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385016
Boot your phone in Bootloader mode (PWR + VOL DOWN).
Run the RUU Installer.
For S-Off, Advanced Hack Kit (AAHK) was quite a big help to me.
My problem is I have s-on. Phone freezes when I try pd98img on sd goldcard. I can connect with fastboot but I am not sure how to use it. The phone was in charge only & usb debug off when it use to work.

HBOOT 2.14
I currently have CLOCKWORK RECOVERY going on, I have wiped, installed from SD the CM10.2 nightly i want to install, installs with no errors, installed gapps again no errors.
unit bootloops on HTC screen, I tried again same thing only this time fastboot flashed the boot.img file, tried before and after the rom install.
Tried all the same steps from most current version TWRP.....Im lost, what should i try next.
Also i have no file structure if you mount the storage from recovery i was empty and said it need to be formatted to be used, put it in FAT32. Made it usable, copied the CM ROM directly to the root of mounted drive, since there were no folders or anything in it.
Would love some help please.....im pulling my hair out

Have you tried RUUing back to stock and re-rooting?
Mount usb storage in TWRP recovery and format (fat32) the sd in Windows. It looks as though you've done a factory reset in bootloader at some point which corrupts the sd card. Once you've done that I'd suggest trying to flash another ROM, if you still have problems you'll probably need to RUU as Rolltribe suggested.

I tried mounting SD card and formating, using twrp and cwm. To try the RUU is that something that is done through fastboot USB?

And the format didn't work? An RUU is an exe program that's run through Windows while the phone is connected, usually in fastboot mode.

That is an at&t RUU but it's a very old one. Personally I'd use the latest which is the 3.18 RUU.

Having about the same issue on my phone. I have TWRP 2.5 on there. Tried to re-install viperxl and it goes through the install OK and then just boot loops.
Tried to use the RUU listed above and it fails with an error code of "Error 159 image error"
The RUU is going from Image version 2.20.502.7 to image ver 3.18.502.6
I had a different error with another RUU image I downloaded from HTC but didn't take notes on error.
Any idea's?
TWRP 2.5 is your problem, it's full of bugs. Download TWRP 2.6 from here. Put the file in your fastboot folder. Connect phone in fastboot mode, open command prompt from within fastboot folder, issue the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
(the exact filename, minus the talking marks)
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you can enter recovery on your phone and flash again and you should be fine.

[Q] One Mini : Fastboot r Recobery impossible ! Helo me !

Hello aa all, and to the rescue!
I have a HTC One Mini (bought used) which revolved in Android 4.4.2...
By restarting, I touch Volume - and passed it in Bootloader
and impossible to get out!
I have tried Factory reset (in red) and Recovery (in green) but nothing.
The menu displays the following information:
* UNLICKED *.
M4 UL PVT Ship S-OFF RL
CID 1111111
Hboot 2-19 0000
OS 1.33.73.1
sept 03, 2013
Then the navigation FASTBOOT commands... etc...
Can you tell me how to deliver an original HTC 4.2.2 ROM or a stable (MagioR3?) custom Rom... and in french!
I flashed an Htc Diamond under WM 6.5...
I downloaded "Magio_Rom_R3.zip" this will be my 1st Android flash!
I installed HTC Drivers (M4) and ADB/FASTBOOT then TWRP2.6.3.0.img renamed to "recovery.img"
When I type "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" =.
"FAILED (remote: image update error)"
Same message if I type "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
Can you help me?
Excuse the English, the translator...
Many thanks in advance.
You need to be in fastboot mode when you are in the boot loader menu, it must be the one with the red background.
Then type fastboot devices in commandline ( cmd window ) the response should be like a identity number from your device.
If there is no device found your windows drivers are not installed correctly. If your device is found, the fastboot flash..... Command should work.

In your posted details there is the cid 1111111 ( seven times a 1) that's not correct! There need to be 8 times the 1 ....maybe there is the mistake you need to get rid off!

Thanks for your reply.
For the CID is 11 11 11 11 (8 digits)
"fastboot devices" = n ° of the M4 = Ok
"fastboot recovery recovery.img" (TWRP 2.6.3.0 ° =
FAILED ("remote: image update error")
I am desperate...
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and this file must be in same folder where fastboot.exe is located. Hope it works

Ok, you will need 2 things in order to put a Rom back on. An OTG cable and a usb drive. I have pictures of them but it won't let me upload

To anyone having issues getting a Rom back on the mini I was able to fix this issue. My bootloader was unlocked, but still s-on and not rooted. A failed update was my issue..which I should have known better.
So I downloaded adb,, fastboot files and placed them all in a folder directly on my hard drive. I was able to flash a recovery using fastboot commands and once I had twrp recovery I wiped data and all, just to be safe. Then I used an OTG cable and connected it to my usb drive, in which I had a Rom zip on, and was able to flash it with no problem. I wiped cache and dalvik, and restarted back in bootloader and used fatboot once again and flashed the boot.img from the Rom I just flashed. Rebooted and it had a Rom again. That is the process I used after I tried all the other steps everyone had and nothing worked.

Try command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". And make sure that the recovery file is not double named "img." Windows will automatically know it's an image file so just name it recovery.
Sent from my One Mini using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
no access to recovery
I've got the same sort of problem. The unit is fine until I try to go into recovery. It refuses to go there.
The problem started when I flashed CWMRecovery. Fastboot and adb recognise my phone, and accept commands, but when I try to flash recovery it sends an error message.
I get fastboot and bootloader menus fine.
I tried " fastboot boot recovery.img" but that just froze the machine .
When I try to get into recovery from rom manager or ROM toolbox pro, it takes me to the fastboot menu, not into recovery, and we're back to square one.
Running android 4.3 Sense 5.5 software 2.12.401.1 Supercid 11111111
rooted and unlocked
To get the phone to work again, I have to hold power down for about 10 secs direct from fastboot/bootloader. If i turn power off from bootloader, it returns to bootloader when I power up again.
Ho hum.
As I say , it works like a dream until I want to go into recovery.
Any ideas, please?
Thanks
