Not sure if this is something that has been posted in this forum before, but I got a letter from Verizon regarding my FCC complaint about Google Wallet.
Thought it was worth sharing...
This is just utter bs.. Makes me sick to be a Verizon customer. So according to them they don't block Google Wallet, but then they go on to explain that any app that integrates with the secure element will be blocked.. So why diddnt they just say that in the first place? I'm sure this is just an excuse for them to force us to use their ****ty take on wallet, and you can be damn sure their app integrates with the secure element, hypocrits. How is it that every other carrier has it available and we don't? So it sounds like if we want official Google Wallet for our devices without editing the build prop, Google will have to release a device under Verizon with it preinstalled. Wow, just wow.

Exactly. Also, if it's such a limitation, then why does it work on Sprint? Doesn't the Sprint S3 have the same internals as the Verizon S3?

Wow I must be out of the loop but please tell me besides sprint what carriers officially support Google Wallet?
I believe Verizon has stated that they won't provide ISIS access to Nexus devices either as they are not certified for their BLAH BLAH security reasons BLAH. I do believe Google is tinkering on a work around for this stuff. At least they didn't go to the effort of disabling NFC entirely like other carriers have.

Wow, this is kinda messed up. Hopefully google can find a way around this, the carriers definitely have too much control over android to be able to have limitations like this in place.
Would be nice if google had full control over the android ecosystem, especially for things like updates, but thankfully we can root and use custom roms to get around the updates issue (especially us VZ users since they're always last to push updates).

this person who responded must have read my letter because I explicity destroyed them on the fact that other mcommerce apps can be used but not wallet so their argument is bunk. Google updated walled to be used not in the secure element in late July I believe. I'll find my letter when i go home. Eff Verizon.

FYI, I dropped the story to Droid-Life thanks to you guys (ItsASamsung is my alternate usertag). I like the way phonearena put it best.
So, the official reason why Verizon isn't allowing Google Wallet is because it requires interaction with a "secure element" (aka NFC-chip), and that secure element isn't available on all Verizon handsets. Following this logic, Verizon will have to be careful when Isis is launched on the network (currently it is only testing on T-Mobile), and not allow users who haven't purchased NFC-enabled SIM cards to download and install Isis, or else the company would look quite hypocritical.

Cnet just put up a review of the Motorola Atrix, one of the most anticipated smart-phones. AT&T has blocked the ability to download 3rd party apps . "You can't install third-party apps" and goes on to say "No change of heart on third-party applications, as that feature is disabled on the Atrix."
Google's(andy rubin) response is to say let me market decide. I truly agree with this statement but when the carriers are in power (two year contracts) it doesn't let the market work. General consumers dont know know the difference between android phones. Consumer assume since they are getting an android phone, all android phones are the same. This blocking of 3rd party apps creates a bad user experience and users will blame android and not the carriers.

unbelievable how can they come with such a thing

This is pretty horrible when you buy a phone and expect it to function like every other phone that has the same OS.
With maybe Telecom's actually trying to invent their own App stores, this may be ATT's push into that direction.

RIP Motorola indeed. I bought the original Droid day it came out...Now I have the X and it's not the same experience (Of course until I changed Roms and multiple other things). But I was perfectly contented with the original, but in order to get that I HAD to change it. Verizon force fed me apps that I simply did not want. So it's also not just ATT.

We can get past this.
What's with all the " RIP Motorola " Hackers, modders, overclockers etc probably account for less then 4% of the market. They are going to make money regardless with the Atrix being the first Dual Core phone released...it will do plenty well, no need to worry guys, lol.
As for the 3rd party apps being locked, honestly, how many people here who will (most likely won’t) admit that you bricked your phone doing something silly and then used the “ manufacture’s warranty “ to replace it? Good for them for locking it down if noob’s jump in head first without knowing what they are doing. It might even bring the cost of phone’s down and bring down that ETF! I don’t care to pay for anyone else’s mistakes. Download the app to your computer and transfer it to your phone if you want it that bad.
Motorola is not going anywhere and they have top quality devices. In my opinion, best on the market! Don’t be mad because you can’t afford one
Carriers are taking over Market billing and earn their cut, hence why they're blocking non-market apps. That said, it won't be long before Atrix is rooted and sideloading enabled.
Have little patience and faith in xda community, will ya?
I simply can't believe how US carriers get away with 2 year contracts. It's simply retarded how they take advantage of their customers.

It is and it isn't. Do I agree 100% they should track every last thing I say, text and browse? Absolutely not. Do I think they should be allowed to see how many calls I make, how many texts, what kind of apps I use, how often I use the browser. Yeah, I'm ok with that.
Sprint has CarrierIQ for what has been basically narrowed down to 2 theories. Troubleshooting, and possible tracking for Marketing and future device planning.
Does it bother me that a company like Sprint would collect metrics to find out what features I use on my current phones so they can offer better choices in the future? Nope, I'm ok with that. Does it worry me they could in theory track everything I say and do? No, but it probably should as it violates my privacy.
I'm still not 100% on what all google can track, but I know its just about everything, as well if I remember correctly they also have a kill switch for it. That just doesn't seem kosher. I still love my phone, and don't let petty **** bother me. To me being followed by the powers that be is petty.

you could at least take it in to the Verizon store and tell them you are positive that it can be put on their network and you can even flash a verizon radio and stock rom if that would be needed. Depending on the tech you have you might be able to get it working. the obstacle is not the phone nor the network, it's the people that don't know what they're doing running the stores.

Ah ok. Gotcha...
I believe there are minor differences between the two devices on the software side. I know that when you go to update the OS, you have to choose the version specifically for your carrier. Obstacle one would be flashing the Mesmerize with Fascinate ROM (not a huge obstacle at all).
Obstacle two would be getting the ESN/MEID registered by Verizon reps. Since the phone doesn't have a SIM, Verizon (and other CDMA carriers) use the ESN to register the phone with their network. If you go into a carrier store, they might look at the US Cellular branding and turn you away. You might be able to call in to Verizon and get it activated over the phone. I believe most ESNs are pre-registered by the carrier when they receive the phone, so it might not show up in their database. Usually when that happens, they send you to a local store to verify the device. If you're lucky, they will add it to the database over the phone, but that might be a long shot.

To the link to the android police website that is supposedly contradicting the article I posted,
It does NOT contradict for two reasons:
1)The arguments made in favor of what is "reasonable" for Verizon do not include the actions themselves, only the standards they use. The actions they take according to those standards,(e.g. locking bootloaders)are notr easonable by the same definition. That is, 4 out of 4 carriers use the same standards as Verizon. But not all four carriers lock bootloaders.
2)The issue of Verizon's double-standard concerning bootloaders is entirely ignored. Verizon says they lock bootloaders because it's a threat to network securityand management. However, they do not require the bootloaders locked on all their devices. Samsung's bootloaders are unlocked, including on phones like the Galaxy Nexus. (Remember? The Galaxy Nexus on Verizon was the whole reason we asked about the Droid RAZR's bootloaders in the first place.) So why the double-standard for HTC, Motorola, LG, etc.?
Until THOSE questions are satisfied, there is no error.
Good luck with your complaint then. I'm sure it will go as far as the circular filing cabinet.
But
But we do have a security breach on a locked bootloader. They can duplicate the phone. And still no solutions just denial from Verizon
all I know is, with all the red tape, Verizon is going to continue and get away with their double-standard until they are taken to court and lose.
Wish I would have found this thread before I filed my complaint lol. Oh well here's hoping it leads to something.

I don't think there's a definite answer as to why the Thunderbolt was the only one locked. but I could guess.
Considering that the Thunderbolt was Verizon's flagship LTE phone, they assumed it would sell well and probably had the same mentality they do now with the RAZR.
well, i think its the only phone that can be on the phone and surf the web on 3g.... any phone with a 4g connection can do that. also, without more people taking this seriously, this wont go far. for those thinking this is a joke, there are always 2 sides of the story. pros and cons can make a difference in the balance. obviously, the rules state they can do what they want within the boundaries...double standards for phones can create an issue with a defense for phone security...also, for those thinking we can have unlimited data....it doesnt state that, if u read the second article that was linked in the first article, they can charge what they want for any amount of data....they just arent suppose to throttle u, deny or limit. u can go over ur data usage, but u just get charged for it...so theres no limit there.... thats my understanding of it though....feel free to correct me

So you don't the see the Bionic as locked?
Interesting.
Verizon is smart lock the boot loaders on the most popular phones load some bloatware on them which they sell space as a nice cost which keep 98% of users from deleted since they won't root. As long as the developer of the phone like HTC leaves a backdoor open we the 2% should always been quite happy. Moto just goes that extra step to completely lock it down.

What you guys don't understand is that the modding community is a very small portion of their customer base. Quite frankly, they don't care about us. They care about the majority of their customer's phone security and the expense of dealing with nimrods who mess up their phones. Google itself is getting into the act with making phones harder to root.

Sorry for the caps...but really. The IMEI/MEID range for the 996 is completely wrong, the phone will not even activate as it isn't whitelisted and good luck getting Sprint to add it. And then there's the problem of the radio support not being correct.
Just because a phone is carrier unlocked in no way means it will just work. Doubly so when the phone in question has rainbow SKUs per region and carrier.

You're going to get 10 total signatures. Lol jk with you. I hardly ever see Sprint users. It's kind of rare. 10 years ago was a different story.
- typed from my freshly rooted V20 on America's most awesome Network , T-Mobile , enjoying my CAT12 download speeds at 600MBPS. O what? It's Tuesday? Free movie rental and ice cream? Don't mind if I do.
Totally just messing around. My phone is still stock. The option to tinker is always welcomed. Come join #TeamMagenta.

Only "most awesome network"...depending on where you live. LOL. There's zero TMo coverage in my entire state.

Sprint does not care about you or what you want.
If they did, you wouldn't need a petition to begin with.

No ISP or telecom does in the USA. They all treat you like cattle to be herded and milked for all you're worth.

THIS WILL NOT WORK!!!
Sorry for the caps...but really. The IMEI/MEID range for the 996 is completely wrong, the phone will not even activate as it isn't whitelisted and good luck getting Sprint to add it. And then there's the problem of the radio support not being correct.

Doubly so if it's CDMA or one of China's carriers. You might run into a problem there unless you have some lte bands capable. Afaik, all lte bands fall under the gsm umbrella so at worst it might be possible lte works, but I'm pretty sure sprint as mentioned is an exception and one of the reasons they're bleeding customers but I seriously doubt this is one of the worst reasons.
I will be leaving Sprint Once my contract expires. I am sick of this non-sense with Sprint.

They all pull nonsense...those like TMo that don;t, well good luck finding towers..
I can tell you that this did not work with Samsung and t-mobile. I doubt it will work with Sprint and LG. No harm in trying though.

What you guys don't understand is that the modding community is a very small portion of their customer base.

This is very true. However....
Quite frankly, they don't care about us.

This isn't the whole story. Reviewers are often enthusiasts and look to XDA. Individual purchasers often look to their techie friends, who are often xda members. So they'd like to make us happy - we're opinion leaders for many purchasers. However....
They care about the majority of their customer's phone security and the expense of dealing with nimrods who mess up their phones. Google itself is getting into the act with making phones harder to root.

They do a cost/benefit. If the phones aren't secure they can't do things like run secure pay services or sell to corporate users. Dealing with users who brick the phone and then return it is also expensive. We're lucky that some services, like T-Mo are willing to open the door a tiny bit. Changing corporate policy for Verizon or Sprint will be hard I suspect.
So give us developer edition phones. Some of us don't care about security. And we definitely cam have our cake and eat it too. The mod community fuels a lot of innovation. And fixes for lazy programmers. Plus we are a big force to contend with sometimes when friends look at the what phone the nerd has. Oh look. Free tech support. But aside from financial things like payment services and wireless pay services, developer phones support the need for speed. I mean tweakers. Lol. I'd gladly give up Knox, encryptiom, enterprise security for an unlockable bootloader. We can still have a secure phone. Just if it falls into the wrong hands they can have free reign over your phone. Surprisingly my phone is always in earshot of me. Nd when it's not, it's even closer. In my pocket or hand. Plenty of security there. And xda finds a lot of exploits that get plugged making phones more secure. I'd gladly pay a small premium for developers edition. And xda. Unintentionally makimg phones more secure for almost 10 years.
