It is and it isn't. Do I agree 100% they should track every last thing I say, text and browse? Absolutely not. Do I think they should be allowed to see how many calls I make, how many texts, what kind of apps I use, how often I use the browser. Yeah, I'm ok with that.
Sprint has CarrierIQ for what has been basically narrowed down to 2 theories. Troubleshooting, and possible tracking for Marketing and future device planning.
Does it bother me that a company like Sprint would collect metrics to find out what features I use on my current phones so they can offer better choices in the future? Nope, I'm ok with that. Does it worry me they could in theory track everything I say and do? No, but it probably should as it violates my privacy.
I'm still not 100% on what all google can track, but I know its just about everything, as well if I remember correctly they also have a kill switch for it. That just doesn't seem kosher. I still love my phone, and don't let petty **** bother me. To me being followed by the powers that be is petty.

Exclusive: Someone Is Getting All Your Data And We Know How To Stop Them!

Well well well we just found out all your data is going to an Amazon server if you updated to the new 2.3.4 EVO and Sensation users. How long you use an app, What app you are using, The fact that you are rooted, the location you are using it from etc etc (without QIC) is being uploaded to an Amazon server un-encrypted. How's that for security? However thanks to Synergy team developer TrevE users of Synergy and the upcoming Eternity ROM from Virus will be secure against this obvious infringement of your privacy. What is HTC up to? And furthermore what other manufacturers are using similar methods? One thing Trev pointed out was your warranty can be voided immediately. They know you are rooted! The repercussions of this are astounding and frankly I am proud to be breaking this story with all of the work I have done here recently speaking out when I find are data being wrongly horded and used in nefarious ways. Kudos to TrevE and Virus for showing me this and helping the community find a way to put a stop to it. This is an ongoing game people and it is the aftermarket guys like Team Synergy and even journalist like myself who are a pretty good line of defense when crap like this comes up. They have your IMEI they know your location from the cell towers in hex and they know you are rooted. The best way to defend yourself is by rooting and flashing these guys ROMS period and that's a win win. Top of the line performance and defense against heinous invasion of your privacy.
for technical details including the nefarious code you can go HERE. The user behavior logs and other info are right in the thread of our sister site InfectedROM.com
The Synergy team and Revolution for the win... oh and when your using Synergy ROM and Eternity ROM this is what HTC will see..... Beat By Team Synergy. Jokes on them. I'm certainly laughing.

I dont think so...I am curious to know also....What are they doing with this data that they have NOT asked us to collect.
I think the op is going way overboard assuming these STATISTICS are being used " nefariously " sure, point it out, bit don't start throwing out accusations without evidence that harmful acts are being perpetrated and scaring the community into a state of paranoia.
I think the OP just copied and pasted the article, so no need to blame him.
And yea, the way the article is written just makes it seem like a rant and not very credible...
dear Op,
please tell us about the services activated under account and sync. then disabled them all and see, how like magic that traffic then is gone...
LOL. This is really written in such a sensational way that it's pretty funny that I really am fifty fifty believing this post. It's like the posts on the web that mention gain six pack ABS in six weeks no exercise. Ah well. Good thing I'm rooted and failed the update.

OK, I'm calling BS, or at the very least calling it inaccurate. If you look up those IPs, they belong to amazonaws.com. If you look this up, you get Amazon Web Services. It's basically a bunch of cloud/database services they offer, for people and other companies to utilize. So while it may go to an Amazon server, it is most likely not actually going to Amazon. It is still just HTC, nothing different, just a different server. Also, WHO THE HELL CARES? It's not like it is constantly sending this data all the time. In fact, I'd be willing to bet this only gets sent when you actually submit one of those 'Tell HTC' forms that show up sometimes.
Well, one more spying us is not a problem
What an interesting post. Is there any kind of independent watchdog group who goes over all the code in these roms to see what is actually going on? I assume it's all open source, so they can't really hide what they're doing. How it works in the real world, however, I don't know.

I don't necessarily believe it either but I wonder if you guys even clicked on the link because there's actually a bunch of source there, and explanations of what happens when you delete certain files that are harvesting info, and the source code that was used to "defeat" the info harvesting behaviors. I think this is interesting at the very least, if not true even if it was definitely presented in a sensational way.
I don't particularly care WHERE the data is going, I want to know WHY it's being collected in the first place, especially if it is not vital to the functioning of our mobile devices, which it seems pretty clear to all of us, it isn't. Even if YOU don't care about your info and data being harvested by google, some of us do and many of us find it very disconcerting.
Also, a guy with 14 posts trolling and asking where "XDA is heading" am I the only one that appreciates how ridiculous that is?

No because if any spying was done it would be done after the data left your phone and therefore undetectable.
The usa and uk do have an agreement whereby each can monitor the others private citizens (yes it is real and has been discussed in the uk houses of parliament. Its called echelon and is a matter of public record in uk) but its highly doubtful you would be spyed on for no reason and not really something you could know if it did happen so not worth worrying over.

I didn't read the full thing but google has been doing this forever and then some. they even increased how detailed/how much data they collect with the new TOS they put out recently. I'm betting the only reason Verizon is drawing more fire is because of the phone aspect of it.
Also, big brother can and does whatever they want. The government monitors all sorts of stuff that you would think would be illegal to do. Welcome to the new socialist regime under Obama..

Yeah, if you don't think that Bush handed him the keys right before firmly pointing the economy at the iceberg and tying steering wheel in place before doing so, than your mistaken.. And being prior military and working in intelligence, I can tell you that every electronic ANYTHING is being archived and saved and scanned for keywords since way before Obama. Not that I want to get into a political conversation here, but I will, who made it a felony to protest, even peacefully, in front of the Secret Service? Who's had 4 years to fix said economy but has only steered it deeper into the hole. Obama has increased the national debt more in 4 years than Bush did in 8.
Now I'm not a Bush fan, I'm just saying Obama is bad news. Oh, as far as the Patriot Act, who renewed it once the majority of the terrorist alarm settled down years after 9/11??
I do agree the monitoring has been going on for a long time, but it has either taken steps that no one would before or at least taken steps publicly that every other regime did in secret. If it is just the same sh*t diff pile then doing it publicly is just a slap in the face to everyone. I'd rather they try to hide it then do it and blatantly step on our rights.
Oh, one more thing, who's given illegal immigrants more rights/help than the average American who is in need of help too?
I'm pretty sure most companies track your online habbits. They claim the use it for "market research". On my phone I'm not really that bothered by it, I don't do anything on it that I want to keep private, because I don't trust how private they are.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless you are embarassed you look at porn on your phone. Just keep things you would like to be personal and not tracked heavily on a properly secured connection at home, and possibly use TOR if you are that paranoid and want a little extra security.
Actually, I believe there is Tor available for android. It may help cut down on what they know your doing.
yawn, who cares???

Look at the letter I got regarding Google Wallet

Not sure if this is something that has been posted in this forum before, but I got a letter from Verizon regarding my FCC complaint about Google Wallet.
Thought it was worth sharing...
This is just utter bs.. Makes me sick to be a Verizon customer. So according to them they don't block Google Wallet, but then they go on to explain that any app that integrates with the secure element will be blocked.. So why diddnt they just say that in the first place? I'm sure this is just an excuse for them to force us to use their ****ty take on wallet, and you can be damn sure their app integrates with the secure element, hypocrits. How is it that every other carrier has it available and we don't? So it sounds like if we want official Google Wallet for our devices without editing the build prop, Google will have to release a device under Verizon with it preinstalled. Wow, just wow.

I believe Verizon has stated that they won't provide ISIS access to Nexus devices either as they are not certified for their BLAH BLAH security reasons BLAH. I do believe Google is tinkering on a work around for this stuff. At least they didn't go to the effort of disabling NFC entirely like other carriers have.

Wow, this is kinda messed up. Hopefully google can find a way around this, the carriers definitely have too much control over android to be able to have limitations like this in place.
Would be nice if google had full control over the android ecosystem, especially for things like updates, but thankfully we can root and use custom roms to get around the updates issue (especially us VZ users since they're always last to push updates).

I'd be ecstatic if Tmobile went into a partnership with Google. Insta drop Big Red. My magenta coverage is great in Baltimore.

FYI, I dropped the story to Droid-Life thanks to you guys (ItsASamsung is my alternate usertag). I like the way phonearena put it best.
So, the official reason why Verizon isn't allowing Google Wallet is because it requires interaction with a "secure element" (aka NFC-chip), and that secure element isn't available on all Verizon handsets. Following this logic, Verizon will have to be careful when Isis is launched on the network (currently it is only testing on T-Mobile), and not allow users who haven't purchased NFC-enabled SIM cards to download and install Isis, or else the company would look quite hypocritical.

This is what I was thinking when I saw this on the verge. So ISIS does not use a secure element?

Any way to block FBI microphone hack?

Anyone know how this works or how to block it?

How the hell could google decline to comment?!?! This story needs to blow up big time and make google have to respond!

I wonder if my mic has been switched on?
As long as NSA does not also have this capability I'm ok. FBI still has to get a warrant to spy on someone like this similar to getting a phone tap.

And elves live in my garden too.
The government does what ever it wants. The Constitution has become no more than a speedbump to government employees.
anyone?
Any developers have actual thoughts on this question? If the FBI can do it, it stands to reason that anyone can do it. It would be good to know if this exploit can be blocked by root users.
Surprised that XDAers don't want to figure this one out.
Pretty conformist for a site for custom software.

How do you know someone is not already working on it? You have to understand that this type of coding would be system wide and hidden very well. It may very well take an entire re-write of the whole OS to remove. Also this is not a custom software site. It is a site to help people learn to do things on their own.

I wouldn't know any more then you as I am not working on it. This is something that would be kept close to the chest as the min it was released it would be patched. Mainly now that they are using free lance hackers to look for exploits.

It has to be switched on somewhere. Even if it is system wide...
Htm.... I wonder how much Apple paid for this article....

Pretty sure Apple has the same thing built into iOS.
edit:
@jcase might be able to give some insight as to how hard this would be to circumvent,
I would think you'd need a kernel level manual override of drivers where x driver cannot be activated under any circumstance unless you manually allow it, kind of like asking for SU permissions, then you use a third party dialer that you personally coded or something of the sort.
I mean you'd basically have to go through the AOSP code line by line I would think to actually locate this.

They do say that it's being done by hackers. Usually by an exploit, spyware, etc. There may not be any bugs in AOSP, and it very well could be in carrier/manufacturer programming.

I wouldn't call it a "bug" if it's being purposely put into the code.
What I am getting is it's being done by the FBI, not "hackers."
http://propakistani.pk/2013/08/02/f...r-android-phone-mic-or-laptop-cameras-report/
"Hacker" seems to just be any word the media uses for anyone who does something questionable on a computer or phone.
I use a Nexus 4 (pure AOSP code) and I would think they could do this to my phone just as easily as say an SGS4 or what have you..
This article seems to indicate that it's not a deliberate backdoor, but an actual exploit that's giving them the mic access. They also mention laptops (obviously not running Android) so I think it's more likely they're just hacking these platforms and using their new privileges to turn the mic on.
Also if you think about it, the mic isn't a restricted device on Linux or Windows. You can touch it without any special permission, so they wouldn't have to completely own your device to listen in on you.

I call BS on any FBI microphone backdoor without hard evidence. Possibility of state sponsored malware that does it? Certainly exists. Don't install random apps you dont trust, stay away from malware and use an international carrier unbranded phone that gets updates frequently (S4 (GT-i9500) and unbranded HTC One likely fit this description, so do GPE devices). Also, most custom roms are horribly outdated as far as security patches go.

This wouldnt surprise me after reading that they are using free lance hackers to find exploits in different OS.
