I have a really good router, and a really terrible car. In the mornings I generally sit in my car while it idles long enough for it to heat up enough that my breath doesn't freeze on the inside of the windshield, which takes about ten minutes. Since I have nothing else to do, I generally browse the internet on my phone. I also have a good enough router that even all the way across the parking lot in my car, I still get some wifi connectivity. It is enough that the phone recognizes it's connected, but not good enough that it can load pages. Therefore, it always gives me "page failed loading" messages. I generally have to manually turn on WiFi for it to default to 4G instead. Is there any setting I can change to where it will automatically disconnect from a wifi network if it has below a certain connectivity that is higher than default?

Could anyone tell me what's the rationale behind this:
When the device connects to the internet via 3G in order to receive mail or whatever, it will just stay connected until you bother to manually disconnect it. But when using wifi, which unlike 3G doesn't cost by the byte, it will disconnect as soon as the screen goes off?
Why on earth is that? Instead of running the hell away from cellular internet as soon as possible it does so with the free wifi? Is there any way to change this behavior? Or am I the only one who's bothered by this?
Besides that, more often than not, I'm having problems connecting to wifi... sometimes it would attempt to connect to a network and then give up and say it's unavailable (even though the signal is excellent and I'm right by the AP). other times, it appears connected but there's no internet... anyone else has these problems? Is my device defective?

I think the behaviour is to save energy. When the screen goes off, the device "thinks" you don't use it anymore. Wifi drains your battery very fast, so the phone tries to reduce it.
For 3G it's the point, that there isn't much data transfer in order to stay connected. Maybe a few kb for the whole day (I don't know if there is any data transfer anyway, but when it's verly little). That's much cheaper than to pay for the full block (for example 100kb) everytime you disconnect. So staying connected saves money in most cases. That's why.
Connection problems: Do you use any encryption? Maybe that's the problem. So far I use wifi only for data transfers between my Macbook and the device. But I don't have any problems.
If you search hard enough you can find apps that might jus tkeep it on.
One such app is KaiserTweak which will keep that wifi on when screen goes off. problem with kaisertweak is that i have heard it can hard reset some peoples devvices, depending on what options you select.
i might give it a whirl because i hate it when my connection is lost, i end up using my data connection when i dont need to as it tries to take over when device wakes up!

I flashed a 6.1 rom and it seems to have made an improvement. Now it would connect fine to my home router every time and not just occasionally (it uses the most basic wep encryption). Still no luck at work though... just as before it appears connected but I can't reach anything inside or outside the lan. The encryption there is the more secure wpa-psk and there's no mac filtering.
Anyone successfully connected to a wpa wlan?
Even though WiFi is up and running, my phone keeps getting connected via GPRS automatically. Although most programs use the WiFi connection, sometimes they switch over to GPRS. Also, when I reboot the phone, WiFi gets deactivated and GPRS kicks in automatically. Of course, this is a bad thing since my carrier allows only 1MB of downstream on GPRS.
The other problem is that WiFi keeps getting disconnected after a period of inactivity. Now I don't mind this happening as it saves battery, but I don't want this to happen when I'm at a place having access to a power source. Strictly speaking, I could live with the WiFi getting disconnected, but the irritating thing is that sometimes it just doesn't reconnect - instead, a baloon pops up informing me of all other wireless networks available - my network isn't listed! Then after a few more minutes, it automagically connects to my network. Sometimes, to get the wifi to connect, all I have to do is click on the "G" icon (I'm about to open the wireless manager) and the WiFi starts to connect! Just w.t.h is going on here? :S
Now the common "solution" for the GPRS problem that's floating around the net is to use a program that disables the GPRS connection, like Modaco NoData or such, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution (regtweak?) by which:
1) GPRS is never connected and if connected, never used by any program IF there's an active WiFi connection
2) When the phone (re)boots, WiFi should be activated and if any "known" networks are found, should connect to it automatically, else it should be deactivated
3) Perhaps WiFi/GPRS can be enabled/disabled based on the cellid/GPS and/or time schedules? Now I know of programs that can do this, but I'm looking for something extremly light, preferably which doesn't have a GUI and/or runs as a service and can be configured by xml/ini/reg (or maybe have a seperate GUI for settings)
Any ideas people?

Yeah, I changed phones. Didn't face this issue on a Diamond and a Hermes.

Just updated from an Incredible to a Charge on Wed. Still able to take it back and get a Thunderbolt if I don't fix a few problems. The main two are:
1) Bluetooth cutting in and out in car - Understand some others have also experienced problems with this, but so far hasn't been TOO bad and a deal killer.
2) Wireless "seamless roaming". I've got a two story house and a single access point has never given me full coverage. Long ago I wired up a 2nd router to the upstairs and set it to disable DHCP, etc., etc., then set it to use the same SSID as the primary router. One is set to use channel 11 and the other is set to use channel 2. The Incredible at least seemed to go from one access point to the other when it needed to and I maintained adequate throughput throughout the house. The Charge appears to be staying on whichever access point it initially connects to and my throughput will drop to nothing when I'm a long way from the one initially connected to. E.g. Go upstairs, turn on wireless - Speedtest of 25 Mbps. Go downstairs hold phone right next to access point - Speedtest of 0.9 Mbps. Turn off wireless, turn back on and throughput of 25 Mbps.
How do I fix this? Is it a network setting error or is the Droid not smart enough to change to the other point? That may be a "return to Verizon" problem.
Hi, I'm new to android, but tech aware. Not sure if this is android or Sensation (I'm on XE with thanks to Mike1986).
I use WiFi a lot, but also wander. I tend to forget to turn off the WiFi when I leave work/home/pub - not top of my list!
Whilst I'm wandering I often try to look something up, when WiFi's scanning, and wait for ages.
Shouldn't the 'system' failover to phone data access if WiFi is not connected - or at least ask me for an action?

yes, it should fail over to data if it is not connected to WIFI.
Correct. If you have wifi enabled, leave the area like to work that has no wifi, then yes mobile network takes over.
But I go one above and use Llama location profiles. Where depending where are based on the conditions you set, you can trigger actions using this app. The app is free in the market and is an invaluable tool for me when I am leaving work, heading to the car with my bt and gets connected because I set my condition to look for a bt device if I am no longer connected to my wifi at work.

It's auto. Like my n1, whenever I am in range of a known wifi connection, the wifi will auto connect if wifi was left on from the prior location or out of range and back again, if that makes sense lol...
So if you go out and are out of wifi range, and you manually turn off wifi, then no wifi won't auto connect of course.
Yes, that all works fine - when I'm wandering in and out of wifi zones. My gripe/question is :
When I am out of wifi range, and wifi is on (scanning), should the phone fall back to the phone data connection? The behaviour I see is that connecting just hangs until I turn wifi off.

I've noticed that if my watch is connected to my phone via bluetooth, it will try to get location data from the phone rather than the watche's own GPS.
Under normal circumstances that's not a problem, however when I go hiking, I keep my phone in my backpack and it loses the GPS signal. That means the watch also loses location data and no longer properly tracks the hike (or any other activity where the phone might not have a GPS signal).
Is there a way to force the watch to use its own GPS even when bluetooth is on?
Turning off bluetooth on the watch fixes this of course, but then I no longer get notifications of text messages coming in while my phone is not easily accessible, which is kind of the point of the watch in the first place.
Maybe turning Off Location on phone ?
